  • Thailand's Prime Ministership remains up for grabs after Parliament rejected the lead contender for the job. Pita Limjaroenrat led his Move Forward Party to victory in the May polls, but his promises to reform laws governing the monarchy have placed him at odds with Thailand's conservative polity.
Especially the 250 members of the military appointed Senate, most of whom did not support his candidature. Still, he says he's in the running and Parliament will vote again next week. Here's more on the man that would be Prime Minister.
Joining me for more is Thai political scientist Janjira Sombatpoonsiri.

Parliament did not reject him. He won the vote in the lower (elected) house but the (unelected military) upper house either rejected him or abstained (80%). He is accused of trying to change the democratic system of Thailand but it is clear there is no democratic system for him to change.

The "king" will do all he can to insure he remains at the top and can spend as much money as he wants and not be held liable for any laws. I wonder how much and what concessions he made to the military leaders to ensure this happens during this election. I'm sure there wasn't much convincing since the junta and "king's" fate are basically intertwined at this point in terms of exploiting the Thai economy to their whim and personal gain. The point is a *LOT* of seats and key positions will have to become...vacant for this change to move forward.

Pilipino keep advocating democracy. Is Philippine a democratic country? I am very sure you think it is. But the point is your country citizen generally prosperous and have a good life? Absolutely no, your county is the poorest in ASEAN! Why? Answer is you don’t have a competent leader that take the interest of the people at heart! That’s it, don’t just copy American by watching TH-cam! America are bankrupt! Do you know what’s bankrupt means? It means America got no money anymore, they are now living on borrow time. I am Thai. The Thai monarchy is not ruling or even running the county. The monarchy is just a figure in Thailand's society. It's like in England. The only difference is that we have a specific law that you cannot criticise the monarchy using false allegations and unjust accusations. That is against the law in Thailand. But Pita and his party are so obsessed with changing this law because many of his colleagues had violated these particular laws so he wants to make change and end this specific law that is called 112 under the Thai constitution. The parliament is willing to vote for him to become the next prime minister. All he has to do is to change his stance with regards to the 112 law because it can cause chaos and instability in Thai's society. Pita was not willing to compromise with this term and push ahead for a change that could affect national's security. Even though he has 14 million votes under his belt---that doesn't mean he can do whatever he wants and disregard the opposition's voice. There are 50 million votes or so that did not vote for him. All other 50 million votes are not with Pita when it comes to making change to the 112 law under Thailand's constitution.

If Thailand's democratization is successful this time, I actually hope that their country will completely abolish the monarchy and reform the political system to presidential system.
Because I think Thailand is a country with a particularly strong conservative culture in many regions, if implemented the current constitutional monarchy will only become the current situation: it is difficult for the parliament to reach a consensus on reform.
In short, the country of Thailand needs a strong leader to lead them to modernization, just like South Korea in the past: if a country is to face regional poverty and a serious gap between rich and poor all the year round, then the democratization of this country is real It's hard to push.

People of Thailand should take a gradual transition from quasi-democratic monarchy country going to fully democratic's rules based nation country.
Lesson learnt from Indonesia, do not take itu revolutionary, instead, take it gradually and cooperativey.

There is no such thing as a quasi democratic system. It is either democratic, or it isn't. That would be like being quasi pregnant, or quasi dead, Princess Bride notwithstanding. If the people elect, period, total say, it is democratic. If they can be overridden in any way, it isn't, pure and simple. The US is NOT a democracy, it is a Republic, and I get so damned sick of hearing people call it the former. The winning presidential candidate has not been elected by the majority of the voters, more than once.

@@beerman204Absolutely, bro. As a Thai, I don't give a damn about 112. I am not interested in a potential civil war scenario, I am interested for a prime minister to work for Thai people by fixing the damage that was done to Thailand's economy for the past 10 years. But Pita and his team does not seem to care about fixing the economy, they only seem to care about waging wars against the monarchy institution.

You are repeating yourself, again. What you wrote is bollocks. The Thai monarchy is certainly NOT like the British monarchy. You can criticise the crown and make fun of them (have you see the "Spitting Image" depiction of the late Queen?). And 30% of the UK population have openly expressed their desire to get rid of the crown and turn the UK into a republic. Can this happen in Thailand?

Thailand needs the military in Parliament to ensure that foreign interference in Thai politics is kept at bay. A US-educated and US-groomed Pita is a political risk for Thailand. This fact is recognized, thereby leading to the first selection results.
