    One idea I find really interesting is the possibility that the career system started as a form of self-defense in those districts. Train a handful of kids to excel in the games and give them the best chance of winning, while guaranteeing that the young or weak will never get reaped. I could definitely see a very community focused district like 2 coming up with that idea.

    • @germany456

      Same here the career system isn’t to give the capital a better show but to give the kids a better chance at winning

      I like the idea, but I suspect with the level of surveillance and control the capital has they would shut it down immediately

      @@book-hoarder5664that’s the thing. The capital saw that and how they that feeling of needing to be better for safety and started carving it into feeling superior like “sweet you’re doing our job for you” 😂 half the work was already gone to shift their mentality

      @bryces.4204 I can see that. But I can also see Snow looking at it as defiance. At the moment, I’m not sure which way he’d lean: Allowing the “self defense culture” to foster naturally then indoctrinating it with propaganda (easier), or injecting the practice into district 2 himself and having full control over what direction it takes (more secure). I suspect the later with his want for complete mastery of the districts, but I’m not sure.

      You also get more things for your people when your kids specifically trained to kill people in a seemingly battle focused culture win, and the kids get told they did good for the community by bringing them food, motivating them even more

      I have a shortlist of groups nobody wants to acknowledge fit this bill that most would like to keep violently oppressing using any justification, no matter how few statistics back up their opinions. One thing about the career districts that i had never thought of until recently, is that people dont have to worry about their children or they themselves being reaped. They know that even if they are chosen that someone is going to volunteer. So at least the stone cutters can take as much tesserae as they need. It doesnt matter how many times their name is in, they arent going to have to fight in the games.

    I always had this theory about the class system in D2. I mean, you look at a lot of the "richer" and more privileged characters from Career Districts have names like "Cato," "Enobaria," "Cashmere," "Glimmer," and i think these names represent wealth, with connections to the Roman Empire and riches, and then the people in outlying districts have names more reminiscent of nature or their respective exports; "Katniss," "Dill," "Rue," " Lamina." This is why I always saw Cato and Clove as sort of representations of this class divide, with Cato being a powerful roman name. I've always seen people interpret Clove's name as the past-tense of "To Cleave, cut with a sharp object," and while i think this is definitely a good take I always end up seeing it as a representation of the plant clove, an aromatic spice that grows in little clusters. So I always imagined Cato being in the upper Peacekeeper Class, with Clove in the Stonemason class.

    • @astranova1674
      @astranova1674 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I wonder if D2 has a training facility for both classes. If Clove was from it a lower class she would have to be taken care of in the facility considering Katniss mentioning her being a lot heavier than her

    • @zoeynett

      I think Clove is meant to be from the Latin word clavus, meaning nail. But I think its still possible she was from the stonemason class since her name is related to masonry.

    I've always found District 2 such a interesting district along with 11 and 4. They're the so called Capitol loyalists who are brutes yet there are times you could see their humanity. Enobaria saying "give them a taste of their medicine" about the Capitol makes me wonder if not only impoverished citizens of the 2 are rebellious but also the Victors themselves.

    I really feel like if we ever get another book in the series what I want is the story of a hunger games career from district 2 going through the process to get into the games. I’d imagine there’s a lot of propaganda similar to how military recruiting in modern day promising a better future directed at the kids in this district. Probably also a lot of pressure and competition within the district to get the spots in the game with the academies having a rigorous round of training and eliminations.

    • @iprobablydislikeyou2735

    • @sufficiently_damp6227
      @sufficiently_damp6227 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andezong9565 It's propaganda because it gets people to join the military. There are a lot of people who only join the military to pay for college or get subsidised healthcare. If those benefits were available to everyone (regardless of whether they served), then you wouldn't get as many disadvantaged people signing up.

  • @megwarbler
    @megwarbler 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +189

    I think it's interesting the idea that District 2 has no class mobility in their district. Combine that with the fact that D2 has a very prominent Career Tribute program. My instinct is to say that the kids from the wealthier, "military" class in D2 have more access to Tribute training than those of the stone mason class. On top of that, it's said in the first book that D2 tributes are almost always volunteers. It makes for a situation where the upper class would always be the tributes (and therefore the winners) and the lower class may never have that chance if they don't have access to Career training and volunteering. Makes me wonder if there were more citizens of D2 willing to join the rebellion but couldn't because of the militarized upper class.

    • @irixaee
      @irixaee 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      I think so because if I remember correctly in mockingjay there were pockets of people in D2 that joined the rebellion despite it being the last district to join the cause due to the loyalist.

  • @JKnight1316
    @JKnight1316 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    I actually think D2 might of had the most class mobility compared to other districts. Compare their district to more poorer districts like 11 and 12, where even though there are class discrepancies there the differences are so small and seem more set, like caste systems. Katniss's mother choosing to marry a miner and give up her class status was considered unheard of and it seems her mother's family disassociated from her after doing so. We don't hear of any opportunities in 12 to become a part of the (I think they were called the merchant class?) All of the businesses in 12 seem to be generationally run family businesses, Peeta's dad was a baker and Peeta and his brothers were expected to take over with zero mention of any other career opportunities. You either inherit the trade of your parent, were luckily resourceful, or starved.
    The only clear example of upward class mobility we see in the series is Sejanus's family who were able to become capital citizens, a privilege I'm sure other extremely wealthy D2 families were able to ascertain. D2 seems to have to most access into the capitol, intermingling with their citizens and resources. If the class system within 2 is peacekeepers vs stonemasons with career trainees coming out of peacekeeper trainee pools, I could imagine if a stone mason child volunteers or applies to enter a career trainee program some might be allowed to enter the programs on scholarship. I feel like if any kid was actually willing to volunteer and train they'd be seen as a hero to the district. In career districts volunteering for the games is seen as a chance for upward mobility to become rich and famous, a stark contrast to other poorer districts who don't have these established training programs for the chance to be a victor or in a "seemingly" desired career path as a peacekeeper. I think this mirrors our society with how the military markets recruitment as a chance for upward mobility and more opportunity, and heavily recruits in lower income neighborhoods. Although based on the way the rebellion played out, kids from the stone mason class who actively tried to join the peacekeeper class may have been seen as class traitors.

    The kicker with the School Lunch Act is a LOT of American schools try their best to do the literal bare minimum. However, it's chilling and disheartening to realize that without the act, they would do even less, to the point it became noticeable by the military when trying to muster...could probably write a thesis on the social impact that mental impairment had on not just those generations but the generations they raised even after the act was put into place.

Capital keeper may only have like 6 year’s contract with a big sign up bonus and good healthcare welfare and pension and post contract benefits. A furred divide could a poorer Capital citizen( middle class) for upwards mobility and a career officer.
    Where D2 are recruited from Pace keeper families or drafted from the wider district depending on recruiting gaps. D2 pace keeper have a 25 year contract and offer getting extended.
