I salute you Dalton for freeing this world of not one but two port-injection Chevrolet intakes in a single year, a task few others would ever undertake.
I'm a former GM driveability tech, and I worked on a bunch of these 5.7L tuned port engines. GM stuck them in the Vette, firebird, Camaro, and the Chevy Caprice that had the police package. I approve you switching to carburetor and hei ignition, parts for this engine was ridiculous. Injectors would short internally due to no regulation on ethanol concentration, and had Bosch injectors that were $200+ a piece. The mass airflow sensor was Bosch and a common fail item as it used a heated wire in the airflow that was cooled and varied resistance to figure airflow, those were $600+. Not a cheap engine for the time. The next generation of these were even worse, using the optispark ignition with the distributor behind the water pump and driven by the camshaft. Made replacing the cap and rotor a real fun time. We always recommended replacing the water pump as we had to remove it anyway to service the distributor.
Your gentle, caressing touch on your projects is a joy to watch. How you are so careful and concise with the things you need to remove is a lesson to us all. I'm not finished watching yet, but my PC is having a fit, and I am writing this while I have the chance. Not unlike the suspected bad solenoid on your transmission, things are currently working in a fashion, but I do not know how long it will last. Finished watching, and boy did I laugh at the antics and panic while out on your adventure. I would love to be able to get up to the things that you guys do. Living the dream! I'm looking forward to seeing what you get up to next. All the best, Neil :-)

You can switch the distributor gear from the computer one to the old one. Roll pin should be in the same place. Also turn the bolts on the rear control arms. That adjusts the rear camber, gives the traction back you lost by removing that 200 lb rear window

It's pretty sad isn't it? I've been doing this shit my whole life, I'd buy these 3 cars for $500 a piece whether I was doing TH-cam or not, just to screw around with them. Having fun is what the hobby is about, not spending millions of dollars!
Your comment on cars being user friendly is so true. I had recently replaced my cabin filter on my 21 Jeep renegade had to remove the entire glove box and lower portion of dash 30 minutes. My old lancer was two clips easy 5 minutes.
I also had a natural water feature in the roof on my old project, man I miss that ranger, though it nearly killed me twice. Great video as always Mr. Dalton Sir
Personally love the C4. I have taken my 84 from stock to 7 second 1/4 mile car over the years. Make great race cars - And they are cheap. They look good. They handle excellently if you're into turning corners, are pretty lightweight and can be made super lightweight easily..... If you're into drag racing they are a great platform to build from as well..... TPI is indeed garbage today, performance wise and working on it wise but was cool back in the 80s... not to worry as old SBC retrofits easily and so does LSX engines. There's alot of room under the hood once you strip away the BS.....
For me personally this is the BEST video I've ever seen. The family owned shop I work at with my brother he has an obsession with Corvettes. He is like the rain man of corvettes. I think I'm going to go in this weekend and do exactly the same thing to one of his beautiful pos sitting in the yard. Just to see what his reaction is Monday morning...... What an inspiration you've been today Thanks man.
@@PoleBarnGarage lol oh I wouldn't they are our cars. My brother is a Vette fan boy lol. He has 3 at home about 4 or more at the shop putting them together actually 2 sitting out in the yard a 86 and a 88 that are in about as Nice as yours there fr lol. I'm sick of looking at them.😁
Obviously you know of the Roadkill Vette Kart, but did you watch the Motor Trend Vette Hack video where it came from? If not, I’d recommend it. They reached a point where they had to add weight back to it because the power simply went up in tire smoke, and that was on a hot dry day at a prepped race track.
I have that exact same koozie with the polar bear, using it right now in fact. It's got blue ice in it, so you put it in the freezer and it will keep your can cold for hours. Best invention ever.
I'm pretty sure that I bought an old car that you worked on a few years back... I could tell because instead of just taking the time to remove the power window motors the right way on both front doors, there were access holes hacked through the sheet metal-- with no attempt made to replace the missing metal! On a lighter note, J.D. is a perfect partner-in-crime.
I dont know why, but "Store brand! Mmmmm!" Is what broke me. Somehow that was the funniest part of it for me. Second funniest was you realizing almost too late that throwing your body into the hood wouldn't end well if it broke free. I think I'd have kept the doors on but gutted them so they're just skins, put the headlights back on, and 5 speed swap it. Perfection. Maybe some header mufflers too..
Soo glad I got introduced to your channel via Junkyard Digs. Love teh ethos & fun you folks have. Also not gonna lie I kinda like those wheels on this Can't wait to see more what you do with this one, my vote is manual swap xXx
JD, I hope you know what a gem your pop is. My step dad had ZERO interest in cars….and I got my first car (1970 Dodge Charger R/T in 1979 for $800), he would scold me every time I opened the hood. “If it ain’t broke…” was his motto. Ya got lucky kid.🍺😎👍🏼
Tuned port injection is awesome, what are you talking about? The thing that sucks about it is the antique electronics that control it. Fitech makes a new control system for TPI that makes it work the way it's supposed to.😎👍
@@PoleBarnGarage No, about 500 bucks somewhere around there. It's just the confuser and some sensors, no throttle body or injectors or intake, just what it needs to control it. A mid grade carbon maker cost that much. Probably not worth spending on that car but in something nicer like your square body you painted up nice would be worth it. Those factory TPI setups should of been installed in trucks because of how good those long runners produce torque.😎👍
So good to see you just rip out all that EFI crap. Now we can all appreciate the beauty beneath. Dalton, you've done it again. JD, your commentary is fabulous. Always a highlight of my YT viewing.
I graduated from automotive school in 1985 and went right to work at a Chevy Dealer. I hated working on the C4 but I did enjoy the test drives. Guess what a common issue under warranty was, the lower intake vacuum leaks at the gasket. It paid right around 5 hours. I could beat most flat rates jobs, I do not think I ever beat that one. Even on the camaro I could not beat it.
I worked with a guy that had a brand new Corvette of about that era. Brand new, under warranty they spent more time in the shop than on the road. Someone once told me the reason for that was that they put all their new experimental "improvements" on them. Looking at your improvements, I'm prone to think that what they did was turn their new hire fresh out of college engineers on designing these...
Can’t wait to see that Cutlass revival!!! Next spring I’m buying a 1970 cutlass of my own… being 17, it’s gonna be interesting to see how that turns out😂
The only time I ever went to Keystone Raceway to watch trophy class drag races (back in the late 80s I think), there were 2 entrants who beat everyone else. The first was a square body short bed with a built 454 and the other monster was a C4 Corvette that looked stock but I'm thinking had something interesting under the hood.
As always awesome vid! Glad you swapped to a carb! For me, you should continue to strip off the entire body, add a roll cage, then add giant off road wheels and tires and then lift her. Turn her into a crazy corvette Baja style monster 😀😀😀😀😀

It's so refreshing to see someone say lets jest tear all this junk off and roll down some gravel roads and see what happens. Thanks Dalton (and JD) for breathing life into this kinda content again
Dalton Sir
You're killing me Dalton! This is at least the second video this year in which you dispose of a complete TPI manifold. I've been looking for one!
You can have it, come get it. Free!!
I think they looked ahead of their time. That injection system was crud
Don't catch a charge!
I'm sick of looking at them.😁
Thank you for the entertainment. One just never knows what you will do. Great video.
I love the way these look, shame it doesn't have a title or I'd be all for fixing it up.
“I’ve got an appetite now” JD you’re a twinkle of hope in the skyline of lazy young men who won’t fix their own skateboards.
Yep I remember that!
Dude, you’re killing me. Great content, I’m impressed. Keep it up.
I'm actually impressed that the transmission shifted, considering its all ECU commanded
700r4 is mechanical, no ecu required
I think that electric rachet from dewalt is more valuable than the entire C4.
I have a separated tendon in my wrist from assembly line work, that ratchet has been a lifesaver!
I have that exact same koozie with the polar bear, using it right now in fact. It's got blue ice in it, so you put it in the freezer and it will keep your can cold for hours. Best invention ever.
Roadkill got death threats when they hacked their c4 for the cart. You gotta do it.
I love this video, resurrecting this pile of crap was fun to watch.
I'm pretty sure that I bought an old car that you worked on a few years back... I could tell because instead of just taking the time to remove the power window motors the right way on both front doors, there were access holes hacked through the sheet metal-- with no attempt made to replace the missing metal! On a lighter note, J.D. is a perfect partner-in-crime.
nice to see the vette got the tender care it deserves
My favorite show on TH-cam, Dalton really is the Wile E. Coyote of the auto world, and we need more of this content.
I can't imagine Dalton being scared of anything 😂
Terrified of heights 😂
I was working on buying that lemans and cutlass 😂😂 I can’t wait to see them on the channel! You saved me some money
You're welcome, they're terrible
@@PoleBarnGarage I noticed. 😂 I wanted to build a gambler 500 rig out of either one
😂 that's hilarious, seems to be a pretty decent engine for something though. Thanks for the video.
Definitely a good engine!
My 11 year old son saw this video, now he wants to make one like that, wants me to sell our 63 galaxie 500 4 door so we can make a similar vette-cart.
Leroy's strangely attractive second cousin, Leanne
I dont know why, but "Store brand! Mmmmm!" Is what broke me. Somehow that was the funniest part of it for me.
Second funniest was you realizing almost too late that throwing your body into the hood wouldn't end well if it broke free.
I think I'd have kept the doors on but gutted them so they're just skins, put the headlights back on, and 5 speed swap it. Perfection. Maybe some header mufflers too..
It needs a stick for sure
Soo glad I got introduced to your channel via Junkyard Digs. Love teh ethos & fun you folks have.
Also not gonna lie I kinda like those wheels on this
Can't wait to see more what you do with this one, my vote is manual swap
xXx
Agreed on the wiggle stick
Properly not giving a fluff! This man could give a class on the subject.
The only thing worse than tune port injection is opti spark.
Optispark, my ptsd is triggered now. Lol
@@TempleofAmon666 no its not, it didn't read the opti unit when it went by lol.
@@danatkinson6698oh…..lol
You and JD are the perfect team! Like my dad and me back in the 80's! You deserve an awesome dad award man🤘🤘🤘
Outstanding Dalton one of your lowest priced builds and it made a great video. Entertainment value is a solid 10 good job guys
Makes me want to get a corvette so I can rip it apart too. I love how the reverse lights are wired to the side markers, that's just genius.
Tuned port injection is awesome, what are you talking about? The thing that sucks about it is the antique electronics that control it. Fitech makes a new control system for TPI that makes it work the way it's supposed to.😎👍
And only what? A grand? Fucccck that lol
@@PoleBarnGarage
No, about 500 bucks somewhere around there.
I thing the thing at 43:35 is a go cart external starter. You would plug it in and stick the end on the crank and use it to spin the motor over.
"I don't want to drive a calculator" best thing I've heard in a while lol
I literally look forward to these videos your like the mad scientist of vehicles and I learn so much from it thank you
Still can't believe this channel only has 156k subscribers. It's just as good as JYD and VGG. Perhaps it hasn't been going as long as those.
I was late to the party, only been doing it a couple of years
As always awesome vid! Glad you swapped to a carb! For me, you should continue to strip off the entire body, add a roll cage, then add giant off road wheels and tires and then lift her. Turn her into a crazy corvette Baja style monster 😀😀😀😀😀
Think you've had more fun with it for your $500 since the first owner picked it up off the lot!
Keep up the shenanigans 😁
Thanks again for keeping it real guys. I've stopped following a lot of other channels, as they have become "youtube stars" or "full time youtubers" (as if that's a real job) and have all these dumb ads and sponsorships and crap. I'm more into the guy out in his yard with his son. Heck, that's what keeps me going. It gets boring without having a side kick around! From one DIY dad to another, thanks for the entertainment Dalton!
Well stick with me here, I have a few ads I have to do coming up, so I can pay for the holey goats engine. I've refused all but 2 of them out of thousands 😂
@@PoleBarnGarageSounds good man. I get it, they do help pay the bills and keep this rolling. I only got a couple cars I spend thousands on, so to have many like you and keep it to a budget, i totally get ya. I think ya know what and who I refer to though
Oh I surely do!
I recently found your channel when it popped up on recommended when I was watching Vice Grip Garage. I've been binging your videos, instantly subbed and ordered some merch. Loving the fresh air and real feel to your videos. Also as someone who loves C4s I'm still ok with this particular video because the car still got to live.
I've got an idea. You guys are nuts and I enjoy being there to watch you have fun. Family fun!! 👍
USa is awesome. holy sheeits. That was pure adreanaline
JD is the best sidekick ever. Dude has mastered improv and is the king of "yes, and".
What a fantastic way to showcase the true potential of a small block chevy engine, get rid of All the carp and throw on a carb. That car was junk when it was new. At least now it's truly fun.
One of my favorite channels on the TH-cams!!! The mayhem you and JD create is pure gold!!! Been watching you guys since the early days!!
