    Whilst driving around Newcastle recently taking videos of red light speed cameras, I was fortunate enough to see my first portable mobile phone and seatbelt detection camera. What I only saw later when I reviewed the video was the infrared flash. Our eyes don't pick up the infrared flash but the dashcam does.
    The flash gives us more information about how far away from the camera you are when the photo is taken.
    The portable mobile phone and seatbelt detection cameras are quite visible painted in safety yellow so you'd think they'd be easy to see. Unfortunately when we drive we go into partial autonomous mode and our minds only picks up what is necessary. If we don't know what something is we tend to go into confused mode. Knowing what these cameras are and how they work hopefully makes things easier.

    Excellent work mate. Im in Qld. I thought theyre really taking the piss now if they're going to peer into our personal space inside. My work mates have been busted with the phone sitting on their laps, so we're taking high res photos of peoples crotches lol.
    Anyway, I figured theyd have to flood the area with IR light to get clear images, when I checked online at the tickets issues I noticed all white coloured items were really bright and it looked IR enchanted by a hell of a lot. I also noticed the angle theyre getting the photo at has to be pretty precise and seems to see into the vehicle from about 8 - 12 inches worth of the top of the windscreen and down, starting from after the usual black strip most cars have.
    So anyway, because the camera is highly tuned to see IR light, the conditions have to be fairly well setup. Ie, that flasher would have been positioned and sized in relation to the exposure and shutter settings etc. Once setup itd work quite well....... unless there was another source of IR light on the vehicle, and in that case it would cause a blurry bright white flair. IR LEDs are cheap and easy to jig together and find a source of power for. I made a strip of 10x 5mm leds, same ones used in IR floodlights (way over kill but because I was too lazy to test how effective it was at causing lense flairs I just decided to over do it). Theyte mounted on a piece of 10mm wide clear acrylic strip directly below the black strip on the top of my windscreen, once theyre on you dont notice them. They just face out the window and run off a spare usb port of my dash cam.
    Ive noticed speed cameras use the same IR enchantment, plan is to drill 5 or so 5mm holes in my numberplate and add them to that too, although this is less of an issue because I dont really speed, but got done for 6kms over about a year ago, how is that fair? Also painting over the ultra reflective paint on the numberplate would make it more of a challenge for a mobile speed camera to decipher the number plate, just paint the whole thing black, then paint whatever colours match the plates (qld we have white reflective background and red non reflective lettering). Studying speed camera tickets, the software they use heavily relies on the contrast of the IR light reflecting off the plate. Even though we couldnt tell the difference, the cameras are crippled once you shine IR light back at them.
    Now, Im not sure what kind of sensor is used by the mobile speed cameras, and weather or not all photos are effected by IR light, or weather it is just an additional step ontop of visible light photos thats merged into a single image or not. The reason this matters is if its just the one image sensor taking the photos then the IR lensflair will make it impossible for a human operator to adjust it away. But if seperate sensors, then they could just look and the photo without the IR photo merged over it, and then the flairs wouldnt be visible.
    Sorry for the rant, Ive had a couple beers, my leds arrived from china 2 days ago, and this video just confirmed the hunch I had about IR and was awesome to see it for real!
    Whats awesome about your video is I could use a microcontroller to detect the speed camera flash and flash my LEDs at the same time back at them. This would save potential odd attention it might get if for some reason a police officers onboard camera was showing live video of my car or something, and the LEDs could also be insanely over powered safety for a split second, increasing effectiveness with less LEDs. Speed cameras must also emit a detectable IR flash, which is really handy to stay descrete

      Great to hear you got some value from my video. You've certainly put some thought into this and sounds like a few beers were enjoyed. My mind tends to think about similar uses of IR LEDs, although just in theory and for fun. Before using such devices, I'd be checking the laws very carefully.

      @EDI I was thinking I wonder if the infrared flare could be filtered out. If it can it might provide authorities with a clear image to follow up on.

    Do you have any footage of a mobile speed camera using infrared flash?

    • @kelvineldridge
      @kelvineldridge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Never thought about mobile speed cameras using infrared flash. Interesting thought. If they do the infrared flash would be harder to get as you'd need a car to be speeding at the time.

    Doesn't bother me. I always wear my seatbelt and don't play with my phone.
    You mentioned a few seconds to see the camera. From what I've observed , a lot of texters are only looking up every 3 - 7 seconds (yeah, seriously) in motion. 16 metres / second @ 60 KPH means they travel 48 - 116 metres in that time. I've observed this by having windowcam recording it as I'm sitting next to them driving in the other lane.

    Do all speed cameras flash?
    I accidentally did a few kms over at night
    It was pitch black
    But no flash
    I'm from Melbourne
    I believe it was a fairly new camera as well.
    I searched for the location of where I noticed the camera was. It didn't show up on the Victorian fines fixed camera locations list either.
    I'm praying I didn't get fined

    • @kelvineldridge
      @kelvineldridge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most cameras flash but some do have infrared flash so you won't generally see the flash. If you were just a few kilometres per hour over keep in mind speedos are often out by about 4km/h and then there's also a 2/3 allowance for their equipment which may or may not work in your favour. You could be lucky. If you could check my site speedcameralocations.com.au/ to see if the location is there it would help. If not please let me know the location so I can check it out. There's quite a few new cameras recently and some may not yet be operational. The Victoria cameras saves lives site is very slow to be updated.

      I don't believe it does at the moment. I've read the cameras can do a lot more such as speed camera, point-to-point, car registration, so in time they may.

      Good question. There's 15 frames in the video from the flash to roughly the pole, which is half a second travel time. The speed I was travelling was 69 km/h. The distance I'd estimate would be 9.6 metres. Not very far at all.

      If it helps, the way I think this works is the infra-red flash unit emits infrared light. We can't see this light because our eyes can't pick it up. We can see a normal flash. Whilst we can't see infrared light, our cameras/phone cameras can often pick up the infrared light and just like a normal flash lights up the subject, so does the infrared light. The camera then takes an image of the subject lit with the infrared light which we then see as a black and white photo/video.
      The following video shows a TV remote control which uses infrared light to control a TV. If you press a button on the remote control and look at the end of the controller you can't see the infrared light, but using your mobile phone's camera, which can pick up a greater range of the light spectrum, you can see the infrared light as the phone converts the energy into an image that we can see. I think that's pretty cool.
