  • New camera technology utilising Artificial Intelligence has been trialled in Victoria detecting offences such as mobile phone use while driving.
Almost 3,000 Victorians have been caught using mobile phones or not wearing seat belts while driving.
The AI has detected the offences over a one-month period.

Interestingly the road accident rate in Australia has been going up in recent years. With the significantly higher population in Japan the number of fatalities is only double that of Australia. This despite hardly any speed cameras or care for people using mobile phones whilst driving, or even seat belt in the back of the car. People here around Osaka routinely drive to the road conditions and other drivers, completely ignoring the speed signs or lights. Somehow it kind of works and feels much better than driving, especially in Victoria, Australia where it feels often there are car wrecks on the side of the major roads and more road rage.

I think we've all had the experience of following a car where the driver is distracted.
So whilst I agree that something needs to be done, such a draconian, hi-tech oriented measure is *inappropriate.*
As a rule, *we need to resist the advancement of any form of hi-tech surveillance over us.*
_It is this piecemeal encroachment that will inevitable lead to a place where we do not want to be._
*Once they begin linking these systems together, which they will, **_it will be too late._*
