“Nick and Charlie” killed me just as much as “Vol 4”!! Any bump in the road for them as a couple feels like the end of the world! But it’s so nice to see a relationship survive such trials to give us all hope for our own lives.
Omg when I was listening to the Nick and Charlie audio book was losing it! I knew it would be a happy ending but it was just so... shocking to see them fight so angrily.
I found Nick and Charlie even harder than Volume 4. I think because you get all the internal monologue too.

Yeah, I'm listening to this on audio at the moment - I actually first read it last year before I read Heartstopper and the night that Tori goes to Becky's party... It's so sad.
It just makes me so happy that nick stuck with charlie throughout everything he went through. He never gave up on him, and there's this specific scene in the novella This Winter that always breaks my heart but really shows it. When charlie is in the hospital after his suicide attempt, he says to nick, why havent you broken up with me yet? And nick tells him, I can't just stop being in love with you.
That. That scene. Jesus. It got me bad. We stan Nick.

Volume 4 is a total gut punch. I need to re-read it. I started reading volume 5, but it's currently on a hiatus as Alice said she needs a much deserved break. There's a lot of mini comics on Tumblr that I think you'd like. Some are continuations to the main history but others are in completely different universes which was so fun. It kind of created this idea that Nick and Charlie would find each other in any universe. It's so wholesome 😅
Vol 4 just killed me. But you know, I’m glad we’re gonna start a conversation about a disease in a responsible way. A lot o people, when it comes to mental health issues, blame it on religion or lack of faith or something like that to look for an explanation, but we forget that its a disease! Like diabetis, it needs medication, therapy, it needs a proper care! And I’m so glad Alice wrote Nick’s mom saying: Love can’t cure a disease. I think it’s the most powerful line for me.
Volume 4 really shows us all, regardless of sexual orientation, the importance of emotional intelligence and the need to be in peace with our emotions, the positive and the negative ones. It was so moving to see Charlie relying on Nick’s emotional support to heal his mental illness and Nick learning to navigate with his own emotions in order to be the support Charlie needed him to be. By now, after seeing Joe and Kit’s exceptional performances in Season 1, I think we all know that both of them will be mastering these emotions brilliantly on screen.
My most anticipated scene has to be the ‘I love you scene’. I also think it will be ICONIC!!!

Definitely read the webcomic!!! I find myself going back to reread everything from time to time and I don’t get tired of it! It’s so fluffy on the feels 😊
It breaks me up every time that Nick makes sure, on his own birthday, that Charlie will communicate with his parents to get him the help he needs. I then I just keep crying until the end of the book. Or at least until the end of Charlie's diary entry. Even just seeing the chapter title "Journey" brings tears to my eyes

Chronically, ‘Nick and Charlie’ novella is the last one on the timeline, and for me it’s kind of like an ending without a real ending. I hope there will be more stories of them.
But, on Alice’s Tumblr, she updated some ‘mini comic’ through the past 5 years. Like some spin-off episodes in the Heartstopper universe. And I remember there is one part about ‘10 years later’, that Nick and Charlie are still together and adopted a dog.
I know if their story is too perfect, it would turn into a fairy tale, but I really wish all of them would happen.
And I hope, I really hope, in Netflix adaption, they can insert some of the mini comics in the major timeline, like the flower shop one, the 10 years later one, the haircut one…. They are just so cute!!!

I laughed so much when Nick tumbled out of the bathtub after Charlie's "I love you" confession. And yes, Tori is queen in this vol! And...yeah, you should probably wait for vol 5 to come out. The comic is currently on hiatus.

Volumes 3 and 4 are tied as my favourites. Volume 3 obvs because the Paris trip (that balcony illustration was just chef's kiss) but jeez volume 4 put me through the wringer as someone who has struggled with mental health (not ED but generally depression and anxiety). The fact that Nick actually does so much research so he can better support Charlie, and encourages him to tell his family in a letter, spoke untold volumes. Absolutely love Sarah Nelson too, she's a star!
Would love to see more of Mr. Ajayi and Mr. Farouk because they're *so effing cute* but also I'd love to see more of Mrs. Singh and her wife. Alice has done such a good job of creating a world where queer characters are virtually the majority and I live for it!
Tori confronting David is one of my favourite scenes from volume 4. She is such a fierce protector, and I just love how refreshingly unafraid she is of conflict. Also love Oliver so much! He's so adorable and I can't wait to see him in the series.
Unfortunately I think Alice has said Oliver won't appear in the series, his role wasn't critical enough to the storyline to justify the difficulties with hiring a young child actor was her explanation I believe

Omgggg! I loved your comments on Book 4. It really touches me how Nick's been by Charlie's side the whole time throught these dark times and not once he treats Charlie like he's less valuable or less of a person. Instead, it makes me stronger and through this we see how deep is Nick's love for Charlie. In the times we live now it's so 'easy' to see ppl just giving up on someone when they're going through a dark period, that it touched my soul to see Nick's behavior. And like you said, he's made it the top tier on the best person ever.
As for the pages on Book 5, as a very impatient and curious person, I'd say pleeeeease go for them. Nick and Charlie are my power couple now, so when I feel a little bit hopeless, I always read the books so I can get that sense of love and smile. So yeah. I'm reeeeeeeally excited to see your reactions to each episode. Pleeease!! 🥰😍💜

I would say to read solitaire so you can see where it all began though it can be a pretty rough book to read. Timeline it takes place during volume four.

Love watching your observations and the portrayal of MH and optimism blows me away. I also love Perks, but Catcher was my favourite book. I think you should definitely delve more into Nick and Charlie novella. I just love how their relationship changes and develops. Keep up the great work 🤗
I have spent much of my social work career working with teenagers and what i love about this show/ graphic novel is how it captures the huge intensity and sometimes overwhelmingly earnest emotions and bursts of astonishing loyalty that young people often show to their friends and partners who are going through hard times ( and yes of course sometimes they fall out a week later but thats not the point!). As and adult you get so used to people being fixated on their own problems and being quite guarded in friendships, its quite astonishing to see, and so well replicated in the show and graphic novel. I
I’ve read through everything that’s on the web comic version and I’m not sorry I have delved into what will be volume five. I now see that I need to get “Nick and Charlie” and “This Winter” (and if you put out reactions to them before I get to them I’ll probably want to wait until I’ve read them to watch those reactions). I’m also curious about “Solitaire,” although I understand there are things about it she wishes she had done differently now. But I agree that there is all sorts of wonderful material in the third and fourth volumes that I very much look forward to in the second and third seasons of the TV show.
It's good to see them dealing with these topics. Especially for young people it would be so easy to say this is too hard I'm leaving you but Nick does everything he needs to do to earn that top tier boyfriend material title. But also a 3 week holiday isn't long at all. My last holiday abroad was 6 and a bit weeks. To be fair, enough time away from someone you love will make you wish you were with them.

Me once again! One of the things I’ve seen on a couple of cast interviews is that Alice was open to suggestions about changes to some scenes, but they soon recognised that it was best to just go with her vision… another thing that came out was the hint that she’s got what seems to be a library of plot lines, character developments etc. of stuff she hasn’t used yet and that’s apart from her coming up with new stuff as the screenplay moved along. I hope she doesn’t burn out because of all the pressure that’s coming the whole teams’ way… I’m sure she’ll be fine. Back to your reaction! Lighter stuff first; Paris Squad: love them! Beach scenes; really well-crafted and entertaining, Love bite panic, very, very funny, “we’ll do it one day” virgin panic! I think the vast majority of us relate to that (although if anyone has ever talked to me about that, my “stock phrase” is “The thing about your first time is that you NEVER have to do it the first time ever again!” it seems to work…!) The “ILY”, so funny! Good job Charlie is a Hoody thief! I really hope they make that scene as farcical as possible, not quite “Carry On…” but close. It would be nice to see Kit and Joe push the comedy envelope much more! In fact the other characters too…

Hey, there is a heart stopper yearbook coming out on October 13th so definitely look out for that and if you are near a Waterstones I think they may have some signed. So I think that may answer your thoughts about the pics and art and apparently there will be an extra mini comic with it.. Its nice with us both being a similar age having the same positive reaction and lols to MSN, hmm I wonder if I can get my iPhone to do msn sound alerts for the retro fun of it.
Me… you know the rest! Finally (I can hear the cheers!) This is out to you JRL… I’m excited for the upcoming series’. The way that the books have crossed to the show is fantastic, but not surprising actually. I think most people know how films and TV stories are physically created; screenplay and storyboards are the foundation and, hopefully, a healthy relationship between writer, producer and director. With the books, they get a huge amount of the screenplay; the illustrations are the icing on that cake! Add to that; Alice’s direct involvement, especially drawing on the library of previously unused stuff and bringing some storylines forward plus holding off on other stuff just makes the quality of this visual storytelling almost a benchmark for future productions, but also a really high bar for others to follow. Casting was spot on, even the boys at the back of Harry’s group, notice them? I’m expecting them to play a bigger part, but as Kit said in an interview, “I trust Alice!” as should we all. Loved your reaction to the books, I’m a bit late to that show… and you are now officially in my top three “reactors” - if that’s a relevant word? - on YT, trust me I have watched dozens and dozens of reaction videos over the last 3 weeks! Looking forward to watching you react to more episodes take care and hope you’ve settled into your new home.
Hi, loving your reaction vids! I'm gonna do my comments in bite-size pieces 'cos once I start writing I can't seem to stop! Cut me some slack, I'm old...! lol. Yeah, new subscriber 2 mins into your reaction to episode 1! Got to admit I avoided the show for a while because I didn't think it would live up to the hype! Got THAT bloody wrong didn't I....???!!! I watch a lot of You Tube and every time I got on the home page this series was all over it so I thought I'd give it a go... I found a 32 minute-er of Nick and Charlie scenes... that was it! Hooked!!! So much so that I opened a Netflix account just to watch it!!! Although there were some spoilers for me 'cos of watching the YT vid, there were so many more surprises and "infill" that NOTHING was spoilt... After I watched it (binge-watched it until my tear ducts were dry!) I went on Webtoon and binged, once again, the entire graphic story... (still go back to it when I need a "Heartstopper" fix!) What a bloody surprise that was too!
I can't wait for the Tori's scene (THAT scene) and Mr. Farouk on the future seasons. Can't wait! I think you should read the comics updates, but the "sad" part is the waiting. "Nick and Charlie" novella is so good, but slap me in the face… remembering me how alone-single I am (kkkkkrying). hahahahah
Yeah i can’t wait for both of those things. Maybe i’ll head to the webcomics once I’m done with solitaire.

Personally, I would wait for Vol 5 - it's tempting to eat up what's out there but now it's on hiatus at the moment and it just leaves you hanging! I'm finding my way through by obsessively rereading what's already out.

Me again! Got to agree with you about the storylines and the graphic ‘toon and books. There’s more “secret” intimacy between the guys than you see in the show. Thinking about it though, if they’d have done that, there wouldn’t have been enough time to develop the other characters…? I did notice the hints at the eating disorder in the show, but obviously it’s more a part of the later storyline. Also the show brings the Elle, Tao, Tara and Darcy storylines forward earlier than in the books, which I’m glad of, for a couple of reasons but mainly because it just makes the show more three dimensional. Isaac is a “still waters run deep” character and I’m more than a bit intrigued about how he’s gonna feature in the later series’…
I’ll be honest, I read the first volume when that was all there was traditionally published. I was like “nope I’ll wait for the next volume to be published”. I didn’t wait, I went straight for the webcomic (I read on tapas and there’s so many other great webcomics on there and webtoon) and I have absolutely no regrets. Waiting for new Nick and Charlie is near impossible.
I know right. I feel like my willpower will only last so long 🤣

I think I might like book 4 more than book 3 but both are great although it's been about a month now since I read them and I sped through them so fast that I need to re-read them now. The "I love you" scene is definitely ICONIC! It's one of my favourite moments in the story. I desperately hope they keep it the same for the show. It's such a humourous and joyful moment that I can totally picture Kit and Joe acting out. I agree with your opinion that Nick handles difficult topics so well. What I love about this story is that yes, there are difficult moments but they are handled in such a loving and caring way, Nick is so loving and is right with Charlie by his side the whole way through. Top tier for sure. So many stories would use the difficult topics as a wedge to drive drama and conflict into the relationship (do they break up, does one leave the other,etc) and I'm so happy this doesn't do that.
There are so many scenes that I can't wait to see the cast act out, and in particular scenes I can't wait to see Kit and Joe portray.
You should definitely read the web comics if you want to know what happens next! Once you're done with Heartstopper you could try a graphic novel called Bloom by Kevin Panetta which takes place around Baltimore in the US, and there's a graphic novel series (2 book volumes, available to read for free on the official website) called Check, Please! that has some similar Heartstopper vibes. I'm working my way through those now.
Reading book 5 is a super difficult decision. I read it, but didn't realize that it wasn't finished. There are less than 100 pages up on Tapas, so you really get left right in the middle of the story before Alice went on hiatus. I didn't have the self restraint to wait, but now I'm crushed. lol

So the Webtoon/Tapas releases has dabbled into volume 5. But Alice has announced another hiatus because of absolute burnout between her work on the live action series as well as all the publications online/print. So if you do look stuff up you won't see too much

Me YET again! Dark stuff; so if you think this may trigger you be careful or just skip it, trust me it’s purely understandable and how you feel comes first, last and always!!!
The first hint I got of the eating disorder was when I noticed you never see Charlie eat…???! It’s a tiny detail which can be missed… so I got the hint that it may play a significant part later in the story (remember I hadn’t seen the graphic story at this point). SPOILER ALERT! One bit that did really panic me is first scene, episode 8. Charlie says “Maybe it would be better if I didn’t exist at all!” got to admit my heart n head nearly exploded!!! I’ve had friends and friends of friends say similar stuff to me for years, some in the not too distant past. All age groups and backgrounds. Luckily I did a course relating to the “Buddy system” back in early ‘90s I think. Part of the course was about listening skills. Trust me, if a listening skills course is still around take any and every opportunity to go on one, you’ll never regret it! I’m no expert but it has been immensely helpful when I’ve come across someone who has a SASH (Suicide and Self Harm issue). Also the book deals with how Nick wants to “fix” things, to make everything better and perfect for Charlie, but can’t. Dealing with a serious issue/s like that is a team effort not a one person job…! It’s also a marathon, not a sprint and you need as much patience as you can muster. Not easy!!!
Always remember; the first step in solving a problem is recognising there is one…

I think it’s a difficult position Nick’s mom is in. She has a son she doesn’t see that often because he’s away at University, but I do agree that she should have firmly put him in his place sooner. I do see that it’s a struggle to be there for both, but ultimately, she does have to take a side when it comes to how ugly David picks on Nick. I think that’s how it is when you have multiple siblings that parent can sometimes feel spread thin that they opt out of conflict to keep from thinking they pick one over the other(s). I’m the youngest of five. Most of the attention went to my eldest brother. My older sister was the one who had to come to my rescue growing up. In those aspects, I can see that side of Tori in her. I’m sure she didn’t mean to disparage Nick for wanting to keep the peace. I’m glad she worked up to telling her son off in volume 4. It’s a tough volume that’s about heavier side of themes that were peppered in the previous volumes, but highlighted in 3, and focused on in 4. That beautiful exchange Nick and his mother have at the end was emotional. It’s SOOOO true that we need a community to help, friends, family, therapists, teachers, etc., to help us in our time of need, and that it’s ok that your love for your partner won’t be enough, but that it doesn’t mean that your love is not strong. The support system that stems from their beautiful love for each other out. It’s a wonderfully put sentiment that many don’t realize soon enough. What Charlie is going through is something that Nick can’t take away, but with his support and help from friends, family, therapists, teachers, etc., things can get better, improve. It’s refreshing to see that depicted and expressed that way. Your significant other can’t be your everything, but he/she/they can still be a very important presence that you can count on. It’s great to hear that. I know I could still learn things I might not have even seen from that perspective. It’s also unfair to expect that your partner take on all your issues alone. It’s sweet that he opened up to his mother about it, and that they researched. I can’t wait to see how they adapt these stories into the series. It was quite an emotional read to say the least.

@@JackieRossLavender yah they need it. So much going on currently it must be overwhelming, it’s just too bad that a storyline was introduced and now it will be months before anything new comes out :( up to you, but my recommendation is to stop at the end of book four.
Regarding the picture of Nick in a tank top (minute 5:15): I thing Kit Connor is already working hard on that muscular body to be able to live up to these comic strips. While he was in LA with his friends, he still regularly went to the gym and posted pictures on social media showing already a quite different body compared to season 1 of Heartstopper.
I finally got my copy of "Nick and Charlie" and I can't wait to start reading it. But definitely take part of Alice's Patreon account so you can read her up to date parts of her comics. She's currently on hiatus, but will be back to deliver more goods. Book 5 starts off gut wrenching already, but it's also the start of their sexual journey, so can't wait to see how Alice will bring that about. Also, thanks for the Book 4 review.
