Hi Katherine -- I'm 76 and have been a "folky" since the 1950's. Fro me these songs speak not only of time and place but of the condition of being young and hopeful and open. Many of them are poetry with the added attraction of music. Each idiom can stand on its own. Together they are magic.
Barry, I was an English prof, and I believe Paul Simon is the greatest "unrecognized" POET of the last 60 years. Just one example: "... he wore his passion for his woman like a thorny crown." Simon makes me say, "I wish I'd written that! " more than any other poet I've ever read.
I met Paul Simon in London, august 1966, in a famous club, Marquee Club in Wardour street. I remember this moment as if it was today. His music is in my life forever.
You are one of the very, VERY best, Paul Simon. And in England, you are never forgotten; what an extraordinary life's work in music. I'm grateful for the day you were born.
Paul Simon is the biggest poet composer of our times. All along his life career he combines 4 creation ingredients like no one else: (1) Brillant lyrics with unique imagery and wording describing emotions connected to time and space, the simple things of human condition and the world around us; (2) Genious melodies and harmony that flow through the measures like cristaline water. (3) Esquisite combinination of corals, instruments and percussion in a constant search of sound perfection (4) Perfect intros that mark the songs with a special and immediately recognisable touch. And as a performer he is the best guitar picking player ever, in an unique mastering of left and right hands. His voice is soft and well tuned but it is the harmony singing in double tune with Garfunkel that projected their singing to divine beauty. Art at its best and we are here to confirm it.
"I stand alone without beliefs, the only truth I know is you.....and as I watch the drops of rain, weave their weary paths and die. I know that I am like the rain, there but for the grace of you go I" If that isn't a love song I don't know what is! JUST STUNNING!
+Alan Grindley No Alan . They did not marry. Kathy did not want to leave England. They still keep in touch though. Paul said a couple of years ago she is now a grandmother.
Simon and Garfunkel are the best...they have had a tremendous effect on my life and I shall always feel gratitude towards them for what they have brought to me...thank you for sharing this song...
Kathy's song is my favorite Paul Simon song from back in the day. The purity, sincerity and innocence of his artistry is evident to all who have the pleasure, as i did, to watch Paul Simon perform live in concert, or listen to his hundreds of iconic recordings. His fruitful collaboration with his friend Art Garfunkel produced not just iconic songs still enjoyed today, but song which descried the Vietnam era generation's life experience., His was, is and continues to be a musical life well lived. Thanks for every note of it, Paul.
She was certainly his first true love . They have been in contact again since 1991 and Kathy and her partner and family meet up with Paul and attended his concerts in the UK.
I still hear the drizzle of the rain thinking of all those I've loved and lost especially my wonderful dad and a love I lost many years ago memories and songs are all l have thankyou Simon and art for your beautiful songs
This song was dedicated to Kathy, Paul Simon's greatest love while he was in England. The relationship did not last, so he wrote this song. THE ONLY TRUTH I KNOW IS YOU. This says it all about how he felt for her.
The best way to listen to this song is looking at a puddle with rain dripping in at random. The guitar imitates it perfectly. This and "For Emily..." come closest to where it hurts.
Imagine having the talent to write a song like that. Then imagine being able to sing and play it so beautifully that the audience listens in complete silence. It takes some imagery, doesn't it.
Dan Fogelberg has the same kind of magic & inherent talent. Listen to his 'Live at Carnegie Hall' (1979) album; it's spellbinding & poignantly beautiful. Just Dan, his guitar & piano. No band, no backups.
I attended The Lawrenceville School, NJ from 1973 to 1976. This song & video thus affirms for me the fun & wonder associated with those precious years. The mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.A. may have some harsh industry & congested metro living -- but it also has a special beauty unlike any other place. It has amazing architecture, terrific institutions, & plenty of family/friends. Simon & Garfunkel are included in this list of friends. Love, Robert Cavalier ~ Tigard, OR; 7/21/16.
For my beautiful daughter Mollie, who passed 13 years ago a week before her 2nd birthday. So you see i have come to doubt, all that once held was true,I stand alone without beliefs. The only truth I know is you
So, peaceful and beautiful. Thank you for all you have done with your music, acting, & other projects. I am so happy to have enjoyed your life's work. You make the world a much better place.
Brenda19ish: Pail Simon met Kathy when he played the Railway Tavern in Brentwood Essex in the 60s. There is also an apocryphal story that he composed “Homeward Bound” on Brentwood train station. Regards, Chaz in Brentwood
I’ve know and loved this song for a long time (30 years) but I just found out about the real love story behind it. I’ve just listened to it again with fresh ears...even more poignant and emotion-filled. A voice and guitar is enough 😢
Yes a beautiful love for Kathy. So lovely Paul and Kathy keep in touch and she and her family go to dinner and attend his shows when he tours in the UK. with Paul . She is a grandma now !
So glad he was in my generation... I have no idea how I ever afforded Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme album back in the 60’s..., not sure where I got a record player.., poor as hell..., but I did and played it until I wore the needle out.. Great songwriter and guitar player...❤️❤️

Through all the years, this remains one of the most beautiful songs musically. Between the verses, twice, Paul stops singing and plays a guitar riff that blows me away, more fully on the original LP than here. I learned this riff on keyboard. I heard Neil Young do it also, but I can't remember where. I wish he'd have done it in full here............nevertheless, very true to the awesome song on record except for that.
Paul Simon: musician, poet, legend. He is my hero, and my youth. I'm 67, but when I listen to this song, I am nineteen again. Thank you . . .
Thank you for your comment Katherine. My youth too! A beautiful song. One of Paul's best . Love it!
Funny that when I'll get older this music will probably remind me of my youth too, 'cause I'm 23 now and totally addicted to them. :)
I prefer Garfunkel. But they are both great! :)

kindred souls are moved by this piece. glad to be amongst those souls.
I simply can’t explain how intricate this poem is. This is quite possibly the most beautiful song I have ever heard.
I don’t think any songwriter could/can touch this song. It is just sublime.
The most beautiful love song ever and never mentions the word "love " in the song .
Best version of one of the most beautiful love song ever written...
So agree with you. Just beautiful .
Absolutely 100%
Sorry beautiful.
I love all their songs.
So.
I met Paul Simon in London, august 1966, in a famous club, Marquee Club in Wardour street. I remember this moment as if it was today. His music is in my life forever.
a great memory for you !
With all of the great writers in music and there are many, I’ve got to say Paul Simon may be the best!
Agree with that !
Up there with lennon and McCartney, Elton john and John denver..
Love this and especially Paul’s voice singing it
My favourite too !
One of the most gentle and most beautiful love songs ever written.
So classic!! Best writer of music in the history of music!
Totally agree !

Genius who has helped me survive after losing a good friend, slaughtered in Nam in 1967. Thank you, Paul
This song brings back so many memories it's almost painful.
"I stand alone without beliefs, the only truth I know is you.....and as I watch the drops of rain, weave their weary paths and die. I know that I am like the rain, there but for the grace of you go I" If that isn't a love song I don't know what is! JUST STUNNING!
+Dan Ocala It surely is Dan. Has to be one of Paul's most beautiful songs.
did paul simon not marry kathy?
+Alan Grindley No Alan . They did not marry. Kathy did not want to leave England. They still keep in touch though. Paul said a couple of years ago she is now a grandmother.
+Brenda Pugh Funny enough but Art married a girl named Kathryn. Coincidence???
+Dan Ocala Could well be Dan ! Art has said he really liked Paul's Kathy too ! . I really love this song .
Very Sweet sng❤🎉
One of the best song writers ever, poetry in music. 😎
Both Simon and Garfunkel sing this song so beautifully it's hard to decide who does it better. I'm any case it's a timeless masterpiece.
Simon and Garfunkel are the best...they have had a tremendous effect on my life and I shall always feel gratitude towards them for what they have brought to me...thank you for sharing this song...
not only sings, but the way to play guitar, incredible!
Thank you fo ryour comment. Totally agree !
Absolute song writing genius and one of the great American voices. I love Paul Simon.
Another master work with beautiful melodies and incredible lyrics, is Kathy's Song. To me, it is more than just a love song 💛
One of the most nostalgic songs of the sixties. Reminds me of being a very young soldier in the British army in Germany and Persian Gulf.
Absolute perfection to the ears...what a beautiful song describing that most elusive of feelings..... LOVE.... true love..... does it really exist???

True. They are direct conduits to our past. Well said.
This song stands up there with Yesterday, God only knows, and Blowin in the wind. Just an incredible work of music and literary art.
I love Paul's voice and guitar, but I loved it even more when he was with Art. "I have a photograph. They're all that's left you.".
This song was dedicated to Kathy, Paul Simon's greatest love while he was in England. The relationship did not last, so he wrote this song. THE ONLY TRUTH I KNOW IS YOU. This says it all about how he felt for her.
Perhaps the best line in any Love song

He always looks so sad, yet he is a man of depth as we see through his lyrics and song writing ability.
Paul Simon has often resisted the term of poet, but this song proves it to me! so beautiful, seemingly so simple.
One of the most beautiful love songs ever written in these modern times. Takes your breath away every time I hear it.
+Dan Ocala It is indeed a most beautiful love song and the word "love" never mentioned.
Great song that eases the pain of Paul being a Yankee fan. I was a huge Brooklyn Dodgers fan. 1955 was my favorite year, and probably not his.
His heart breaking, as he sings this. Unfortunately such is life.
This is his best version. It brings tears to my reyes whenever I listen to it.
To be that much in love with someone would be life's greatest blessing. ❤
Yes it certainly would . Paul and Kathy reconnected in the nineties and are friends . He has mentioned a few times that she is a grandma now .
No man with a weak heart should listen to this song if he doesn't want to die soon. It is pure craving for something precious, gone and unreachable.
Genuinely beautiful song, perfectly performed.
Quite possibly the most complete musical songwriter. Quirky and so so clever. A true maestro.
Boy, those were the days when people shut the hell up when someone is singing, those days are gone!
Beautiful song beautifully sung thank you paul great memories ❤
My favourite Paul Simon song it's a classic love song
A beautiful love song created without mentionong the word "love ' .
One of the best songs of a truly phenomenally talented man.
Paul Simon is the greatest poetry song writer ever in the history of music.

Music in poetry, so beautiful words nor music could capture all that was in his heart! ❤ May God Bless You!!!

The melody, mood and timbre of his acoustic guitar may be touched by God....but the lyrics are surely sculpted from humanity.

How are you doing today?
'Kathys song' by Paul and Dylans 'Tomorrow is a long time' have to be two of the most moving love songs ever written.💚
Totally agree john .
And I’d add the Biograph version of “You’re a Big Girl Now”, I can’t believe he didn’t include that version on Blood on The Tracks.
When you hear Paul sing this song you can tell there is more meaning to the singer than when Art sings it!

What a beautiful song.
Amazing art piece!
So simple but great. You two have a wonderful impact on music
I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls
And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies
My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're asleep
And kiss you when you start your day
And as a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme
And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you
And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I
I think this has to be my favourite song of his, but TBH they were so many great ones it's hard to know
