Me and my cat testing a 10 000 mAh powerbank made by "mm"

  • Today, let's test and open another powerbank with the help of my cat. This time it's a 10 000 mAh rated powerbank made by "mm" with two USB ports (1A and 2.1A). Is the capacity and current capability is real or fake? What battery and circuitry does it contain? Let's see. Note: the clamp meter measurement may have been influenced by a transformer or inductor in the nearby charger SMPS.

    10,000mAh capacity is only possibly by using 3300mAh or 3400mAh (think Panasonic NCR18650B or similar) cells in that housing.
    And since NCR18650B costs about £5 or £6 per piece, the total cost of the whole thing will probably be about £20 - basically only going to happen in a good quality product (though a good quality product will probably use flat Li-Po cells in a larger housing, or 2500mAh-ish cells in a better housing). So of course the capacity is to be expected.

  • @johncoops6897
    @johncoops6897 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    An important point when charging, before running capacity tests. The LED display is a "voltmeter", so the LED may stop blinking when it reaches 4.2V, however that might only indiicate that the Constant Current (CC) charging phase is completed.
    After the CC phase, the cells are then charged at Constant Voltage (CV), and they will still draw ~ 1A, then slowly drop down to about 100mA where the charging will terminate. The CV phase can last a few hours, and is where about HALF of the capacity gets added!
    So, don't just trust the LED indicator.... you need to monitor the current drawn and only consider it's "fully charged" when there is no charging current drawn.
    That said, those cells have no markings and are probably second hand laptop pulls, and have been re-wrapped. So they probably are shit anyway.

    • @TheSpotify95
      @TheSpotify95 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only way that battery packwas going to get anywhere near 10Ah was if the cells were 3300 or 3400mAh each - think NCR18650B. Also the 4500mAh rating was at a generous 330mA per cell (1A total); most 18650s are fit for 0.5A or 1A discharge rate, so at higher discharge rates, the capacity of the cells will probably be even lower.
      So the conclusion is - DODGY!

    I suppose that's not bad for 3x 18650 cells. For a cheap Chinese power bank, you really weren't expecting them to use Panasonic NCR18650B cells, which are pretty much the only ones that will get you 10Ah in just three 18650s in parallel.
    Quite a lot of scavenged laptop battery cells perform at about this rate, or slightly worse (though you can sometimes get really nice ones).

    If a cheap Powerbank looks and feels cheap, and has a kinda big but not unreadonable capacity, its probably real. I have a 6€ 4400mah powerbank, but it seems that they put their money into genuine cells. There are two 18650 batteries in it. If someone sells a cheap but good looking powerbank, they wont have much money left for nice electronics and good cells, after the case.
    Also it has a relativley good 1A. They often sell powerbanks that claim 1A, but they just cant. I havent testet the A, but its better than another powerbank i have.

    I think that some Chinese manufacturers just grab used laptop batteries, extract their cells and stick them in these enclosures with some generic circuitry. At least they shouldn't lie, measure the actual capacity and report it on the box, along some notices about the cells not being brand new but rather recycled. "Power banks with recycled power cells". Something that I've been doing for months until now.
