Dangerous Chinese Power Extension (+ wire maths & circuit breakers explained)

  • So I managed to make a 22 minute video about a piece of wire :). Actually, I made a thorough analysis of a cheap and dangerous power extension from China for LED strings or anything else. I explain some calculations of a voltage drop on its resistance and the power dissipation. I also talk about calculating the conductivity (inverse of resistivity) of a wire. The tripping curves of circuit breakers are also explained. And of course, the video contains some stupid and dangerous experiments with a short circuit and lots of smoke :).

    As an American viewer, that 0.0062 mm^2 wire bundle you were blowing up converts to 39 AWG, which has a chassis wiring ampacity of only 110 mA and a power transmission ampacity of only 17.5 mA. You were pegging that poor wire right to its safe limit with that incandescent light bulb.

    • @user-tz3fd8hm4q
      @user-tz3fd8hm4q 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It's not 0.0062mm², it's 0.062mm². Still only 29AWG so way too thin. Proper extensions like this have 18AWG or 20AWG cable, so if a short occures, the breaker will trip first.

      @@mattdude I mean extensions with no earth wire, which are only rated for 2,5A at 230V mains. For that current 18AWG or 20AWG would be enough. But the extensions with earth need 16AWG cable for 16A at 230V. Of course, I mean the european ones.

    Ok that is disturbing... The green flame colour could be Zinc, which would match up well with the conductivity measurement and the low melting point.
    But seriously, not even the chinese would resort to sending people cables made of ZINC would they!?

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      I didn't notice any green flame. Did you? But maybe they just came accross a lot of scrap zinc... It could also be some alloy of 2 or 3 metals like Copper + Aluminium + Iron. Some alloys of iron may not be magnetic...

    • @mortlet5180
      @mortlet5180 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      DiodeGoneWild; You might be right about the iron alloy. The blueish-green colour is just there for a moment, left of the main lighter flame, which makes me suspicious that it could be a galvanized alloy.
      It could also have come from copper, but if so, then why does the colour only happen for a moment once you heat a piece of wire up? The coppery colour was underneath of the silver, so should theoretically be present in the bulk material. Also, I really don't think they would use copper in the bulk of the wire, since brass, bronze or some copper-iron alloy would be more expensive than simple aluminium or even copper coated aluminium.

    • @mortlet5180
      @mortlet5180 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      DiodeGoneWild; Could you perhaps find a piece of the wire which is still unburnt, and put it into some vinegar? Seeing which part of the wire (if any) reacts, should help narrow it down quite a bit. (Sorry if I'm being overly neurotic about this... I just really dislike unsolved mysteries XD)

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I've just put it into vinegar. No immediate reaction. Let's wait what happens.

    • @mortlet5180
      @mortlet5180 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      DiodeGoneWild; Awh, it probably isn't Zinc then. I think you're right on about it being iron based.
      Sorry for the wild goose chase, and thank you very much for accommodating my curiosity. :)
      This next part is purely speculation for interest's sake. I'm obviously not suggesting that you spend even more time on this than you already have.:
      (The simplest confirmatory test that I can think of, would be to precipitate the Fe as its hydroxide. However, that would require dissolving the wire in a strong acid, like swimming pool HCl or H2SO4 (or perhaps just electrolyzing some acidified salt water to corrode the anode?), and then basifying the solution with drain cleaner NaOH, also known as caustic soda, to look for a brown precipitate.
      Unfortunately, I'm an electrical engineer, so my chemistry knowledge is somewhat lacking...)

      If that were the case, then it would, at minimum, need to have a fuse for its rated current to even begin to meet any sort of standards. However, it's poorly constructed and the plugs themselves are non-compliant. In other words, it's not even supposed to be used to power Christmas lights.

  • @felixcat4346
    @felixcat4346 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    It does seem strange to make an extension cord this flimsy. On the other hand it does make a good fuse. I use speaker wire to power up a few low power led light bulbs it works great.

  • @danielmantione
    @danielmantione 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I get the impression this extension cord was weight optimized. Obsiously thinner wires are cheaper, but the costs savings are small and wether the cable costs €2 or €2,10 won't hurt sales that much. However, weight is a big factor: In order to be able to get it delivered for free to your door, it is necessary that it is matches the international postal rules for letters. International treaties require postal services to deliver letters for relatively low prices and this is the mechanism that allows for the free delivery. But in order to be accepted as a letter, the cable has to fit in a max weight. The free delivery does make a big difference in sales and therefore perfectly explains the chocie for an extremly thin cable.
    There is a quite perverted mechanism at work here: Producers adjust to the rules of the market. The market demands weight optimization and producers are willing to sacrifice safety in order to reduce weight.

      I have the 16A circuit breaker :). If someone in the UK plugs a EU appliance using a cheap adapter, it's only fused by the 32A breaker. The same applies to dodgy appliances with UK plug, but no fuse in it. In any country, people have to be a bit wary what they plug in.
      Is brass really used for conductors? It's more expensive yet less conductive than aluminium. To me it doesn't make much sense. And also using just pure copper, you make a wire of the same resistance, but thinner and cheaper.

      @Vinyl Hendrickx A 50m reel (1.5mm2 copper) has a total resistance of 1Ohm. A short circuit on the end of that cable will give you a peak current of over 200A which is more than enough to trip your 20A breaker (might even trip the main breaker).
      Most of those reels have a builtin breaker (the little red button that pops and can be reset).
      There are also some smaller reels (10m) using only 0.75mm2 copper and even those should be safe to use as long as you don't chain a bunch of those or overload them (check the rating on the reel).

    I occasionally buy some clip leads from China. I have received some CCA ones (copper clad aluminium) but also tinned or copper plated iron ones. You can recognize the last ones easily - the wire is attracted by magnets.
    When they inevitably break (either by running more than 2 amps through it, or because the connection between wire and clip breaks) i just replace it with some salvaged proper coper wire.
    Proper clip leads are hard to find - the local electronics shop also sells the chinese ones that quickly break - although they do use copper wire.

      But at least that's in the same magnitude. So to say, it will not ignite with a little overcurrent, just run somewhat hotter than designed, but will trip the breaker on short circuit.

    I'm sure people have said this but, as an American, your Czech accent is quite intoxicating, Danyk. P.S. wish we used 240v for everything instead of our split phase 120-0-120 system. It just requires thicker wires, and having two phases in the house can be confusing sometimes.

    My guess would have been that the wire is pot metal, but normally that’s mostly zinc. I’m quite puzzled now.

    As far as i know this type of cable is forbidden in the EU because it's easy to misalign the plug and have one pin exposed and the other pin connected to mains.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, and it aslo allows you to plug in appliances that have to be grounded. There are some 2-wire extensions in the EU, but those have the socket in a deep recess to prevent those situations.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      because x/(y*z) is the same as x/y/z. It's faster to type the latter into the calculator.

    That is probably not an electrical grade cable, but likely a Special Effects prop cable made for action movies and such, accidentaly manufactured into an extension cord. haha

  • @anthonyvolkman2338

    I believe those are for "decorative use only" such as only Christmas lights and such. It also appears to have that recessed plug so that the male plug seats into it and maybe even fit moisture blocking maybe. Surely that wasn't sold as an actual extension cord, that would be crazy!

      Since when do people read the instructions on Christmas lights?
      They will see the niiice shiny metal and think it is strong.
      In January it gets cold they will use it to plug in a space heater.
      Turn it on and then go to the apartment building lobby to check the mail.

  • @pojcharapoltosukowong

    For me, I'd probably wanted a extension cord to also have an earth connection. And wow, that thing is so dangerous. I wonder why do they even allowed it to be on sale.
