  • Today, let's investigate another 3 good looking, but still relatively cheap 3.7V 18650 Li-Ion rechargeable batteries from Ebay. They are rated 2500mAh, 3000mAh and 3400mAh. What's the actual capacity?

    Highest capacity batteries right now are LG INR18650-M36 and Panasonic NCR18650G which are usually quoted as 3600 nominal, but really under realistic discharge currents they're indistinguishable from 3500. I think both are specified to weigh 47.5g
    The first two of "mysterious numbers" on brown are LG, which (if it's not a fake sleeve - which it stands to reason that it likely is) would indicate where it came from, that would be an INR18650HG2 with a 3000 nominal capacity.
    "Do not modify" seems like they're challenging you :D IDK, sleeve replacement, top piece replacement, poking inside the top with a needle to reset the pressure fuse if blown?
    INR18650-25R is specified as weighing 44-46g, the INR18650HG2 doesn't have nominal weight but max is specified as 48, and the NCR18650B is specified as 45-47. Unless your scale reads consistently low by a couple grams, it would make all of them likely fake - unless they lost some electrolyte. Does that happen, do rechargeable batteries lose weight with time to a tune of a couple grams? I wonder. Besides, i don't think the top of the NCR battery looks like it would on the original unit, you expect super sharp stamping with very little roundness, fairly shallow, and the white washer having such a narrow opening that you can barely see the slits at all. Probably worth looking up what the tops of other batteries, if they were original, should look like.

    Back when I was vaping I used these 3 particular types of batteries, which I bought as new and they costed between 10 to 18$.
    The one made in Japan, 3400 mAh is from Panasonic, older generation, high capacity, moderate discharge current, it wasn't very good for currents above 5A.
    The brown one is indeed LG (particularly HG2), really powerful for vaping, very high discharge current, it lasted for quite long.
    The Samsung one is the general purpose battery which came with my vaper. It was OK initially , but indeed it did not last many cycles.
    I tried to test their capacity as new by discharging them with a 10 Ohm resistor and by measuring the voltage and current every 15 minutes until they reached 3.2 V and back then I came with these numbers: ~2600 mAh for Panasonic, ~2500 mAh for LG and ~2000 mAh for Samsung.
    I guess the ones from the video are not fake but used quite well.

    Genuine Samsung 25R and LG HG2 are popular mid range batteries used for vaping these days. The 3400 mah Panasonic is popular for flashlights but usually prefer real button top and protection pcb for those applications.

    Hi Danik,
    At 14:00 when you show the bottom of the three batteries, I thought I saw, when the point of view was more grazing on the metal surfaces, that the bottom was slightly deformed in some areas, as if it had been filed and then brushed , to remove the welding points, perhaps the battery falsifiers have gone to a higher level of sophistication than the double bottom with a metal disk, unless they were visual artifacts due to the compression of the video ...
    Hi and the next videos
    P.S. LITOKALA is a brand sold by Banggood: in their advertisement they say that their batteries are 100% original, but when they arrive, under the brand (a sticker on the green plastic) they are branded SAMSUNG !! I have not done endurance tests so they could also be good ... but can i say: what ?!

  • @oddjobbob8742
    @oddjobbob8742 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    For product liability reasons I imagine the battery you’re showing would be said to have been modified if it has a nickel tab spot welded to it. In a way, that warming is a good sign because it indicates the manufacturer has a product liability insurance policy that requires that warning. It might also indicate the manufacturer is using processes approved by the insurance company. Therefore, modification is possibly safer.

    thanks for testing! Little bit long the part on the "Cinglish" - we all know how funny the translations are and most often very disleading or confusing! To be sure about the specs one should always look at the datasheet of the manufacturer of the battery :-) The batteries look very promising and could be real - but its good to know they are still fake or used ones or old shelfware with lots of capacity loss! Many old cells from old laptop batteries are still better and much more safe to use i would say! In me experience you can find good cell even with very low voltage above 0, like 0.5V can be still good. But when they have reached 0.0 or even negative they will be really dead or leaking a lot. This holds esp. for high-current cells.

    For the LG the manufacture states: “Charge (CC/CV): 4A charge to 4.2V, 100mA cut-off”

    These are probably lower cpacity cells re-wrapped as high capacity/current cells.
    The INR18650-25R should weigh more, due to the higher rated current.
    So should the Panasonic, due to the sheer amount of capacity.

  • @MrHimer12

    18650's storage voltage should be around 3.5 to 3.55V and that's the voltage all the HB6 LG cells came to me in a big box. There are not many studies about this topic but lithium ion tends to have lesser capacity loss when they are closer to 0% SOC but not in 0% SOC I hope I got that right(non english guy). Also lithium ion are made to degrade less when fully charged in typical application but they will lose capacity anyways. Lipo are whole diffrent story I had aquired some ranging in age from 1-10 years and I also did some experiments with storage. In lipo maintaining temperature and 40% SOC or 3.85V per cell is crucial there to recover almost 100% of capacity, you go in any direction, less or more - they suffer a lot and worse than lithium ion. I had some 25Rs(genuine) stored at 40% SOC for 4 years in 25 celsius and according to data I could find indeed I was able to recover up to 90% of their capacity but I also had seperate control group which were charged up to 3.55V per cell and left in storage. In case of those I was able to recover from 95 to 97% of their original capacity. I also should have mention that both control groups of 10 and 10 cells were fresh and never used. I think my test group of 10x10 is big enough to prove my theory about storing 18650s. I own several M12 brushless milwaukee tools but I don't use them regularily so usually after some big projects I discharge all of the batteries so they stay around 3.55V per cell if they are going to stay in the bag for 1-3 months or sometimes. While some of my coworkers are now complaining about their multitools M12 not accepting batteries which they all the time store in the bag fully charged I don't have problems like this and my batteries are performing really well. But I'm doing that little sacrifice when job is done and while I drink some good czech beer I got my ass up to hook batteries to electronic load and set it right then it does it job while I still enjoy that beer, then I can just put those batteries in the bag knowing they will be good.

    Some time ago I bought 50 laptop batteries for $ 1 each, and there were usually 6 cells inside. 30% of the batteries had over 3.5V, 20% over 2.5V, and the other less than 2V (but even 80% came back to life, thanks to the charger with the low voltage cell rescue function) and they keep the voltage and don't heat up when charging. Half of them still stored around 2000-2200mAh.

    The Li-ion battery 18650 is being tested for capacity with the final voltage of 2.5v and starts at 4.20v and discharges with 500mA, since it was not so tested, it did not show the right capacity at the end. These batteries (all three) in the video certainly have over 2500mAh minimum (not 1700-1800mAh) and this will be seen when they are properly tested next time and are probably original and good only you have to test them properly another time... 😏 !

      You need to have a charge and balance controller. Is your bike electric start? If not, then you really don't need Lithium, you could almost do it with super capacitors.

    I thought they only write down the max discharging ampage. Which would be way too low for my uses

    Try liitokala cells from Aliexpress

      got some ncr18650b from them there where original (capacity was correct, weight also. and top pole had 3 wings not 4..5 like fake ones)

      they're very hit and miss. Some are fake and some are genuine but they all have good capacity usually but the fakes you know because of the high internal resistance. I would love to see some tested

    I'm gonna to guess that the first and third ones are real and the middle one is fake.
    I have 5 of these Samsung 18650 batteries and 2 have failed for no reason.

  • @ab_ab_c
    @ab_ab_c 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My guess is the cells are just old cells that never sold & likely lost capacity due to improper storage charge (too high or left in storage for too long). Then someone bought them in bulk & listed their "rated capacity" as the capacity of the cells--rather than individually testing them to determine what their actual aged capacity is at the time of sale.
    That's why I think it should be legally mandatory for all li-ion cell manufactures to engrave the manufactured date on the bottom of each them--otherwise unscrupulous sellers on ebay can sell unsuspecting people junk inferior cells.

    • @johncoops6897
      @johncoops6897 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a shortage of Lithium batteries. They never ever "sit around never sold" long enough to lose capacity. These will be low quality cells (lots of those out there), or used ones... re-wrapped.

    • @ab_ab_c
      @ab_ab_c 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Panasonic cell in the looks like a real Panasonic cell. I doubt Panasonic would sell low quality cells. There must be another explanation.

      panasonic/sanyo, sony print the date code on both the wrapper and metal casing.
