Flammable gas & CO detector - test and teardown

  • Today, let's take a look at SAFE-808 COM, a 2 in 1 combined detector of combustible gasses (like methane, propane, butane, natural gas, CNG, LPG, ...) and toxic carbon monoxide (CO). It has an alarm to warn you in case of a gas leak or CO leak. It can help to prevent an explosion or gas poisoning (suffocation). Let's "properly" test this detector and also see what's inside and how does it work.

    P.s. the heated sensor probably had limited life (about 5 year)
    Due to heating, the reaction with the gases went poor and bad so the sensor becomes insensitive.

I noticed sometimes the flame goes out after initial ignition - I never understood why I had to hold the igniter a bit longer. In Romania it is mandatory to have it as safety device. It is connected to an electrovalve outside the building and that electrovalve stops the gas. You must reset manualy the electrovalve after an alarm.

    It might be worth stressing that CO is produced by incomplete combustion of *any* fuel - wood, coke, charcoal, paraffin (kerosene), coal… Not just gas. The candles experiment highlighted this. It's worth installing a CO detector wherever a heater is installed unless it's an electric heater - it's a legal requirement to do so in some places.

  • @AlexKiraly
    @AlexKiraly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had no idea what those safety things from the stove do, up until now. And I also realized my stove has holes for them, but it doesn't have them! Moreover, I should get myself a CO detector, now that you mention it.

    If you have natural gas connection, you should install a gas detector that can also shutoff your gas supply upon alarm. Install it near the ceiling.
    Install the detector you showed us at ~1.5m from the floor for CO detection. (CO is about as dense as air, so the detector needs to be located at your breathing level.)

    The single-insulated wires (what voltage are they rated for?) to the display, running over the top of the primary capacitor, may be a loophole in the isolation; the individual mains wires also get close to the battery positive terminal. Some sleeving in those positions would have been prudent.

    Great! The natural gas flame detector at your kitchen oven has one more functionality. The are 2 materials /metals connected together. If the sensor is hot, it produces a current which holds open the gas valve. The unknown (forgotten) functionality is : if, for example water is out and the Thing over the flame becomes more and more hot, the other side of the sensor, where it is screwed with the oven, becomes hot, too. So the temperature difference delta becomes lower. Because the current exists because a temperature difference, the current becomes low with less delta of temp. difference. So overheating the sensors bottom will a clo the gas valve. I hope, it is understandable, what I want to say 🙄 After terrorism against me at Infineon Regensburg and 2 brain bleeding my English has become bad.

      But this reaction is metastable, it mostly create CO2, because the bond has lower energy and that's what nature wants, the CO bond is double, so ii needs more energy to create and to keep.

    I had this in the past in the kitchen over the gas stove, but it detects hair spray used in hall by my wife. We have kitchen next to the hall without door. So I had to stop using it (detector, not hair spray 🙂).
