Which I personally think is dumb and doesn’t make much sense but whatever.

I had a lot of fun playing a halfling rogue. Once, I stole a drunk guys gold and just ducked under him. He couldn't find me. I made 200 gold that night, talked my way out of being arrested, and made the local leader of a huge city super angry at some traveling barbarian group. The next day I stole that barbarian groups most prized possessions and blamed it on the previously mentioned city leader. And that was BEFORE I got an invisibility cape (like from harry potter) and boots of speed that let me move 50 ft, 100 on a double action. I ran on water once. It was fun.
I've also been thrown at a dragon, a giant worm, and a magic wall before because I'm the lightest and smallest in the party. And we have a dragonborn. He's the one that throws me a lot. But I can backstab him, so it's fine

I'm in a Pathinder campaign right now with a Halfling Life Oracle. I'm essentially a healbot, with some nifty role-play stuff going on. I have 18 Dex and Charisma... and only 6 Strength. He has a Light Crossbow... and that's it. If I'm in melee range, I just have to run away.
Everyone else is a new player. We have 2 fighters, a monk, and a ranger- all humans. I guess a player with a rogue is gonna join our party sooner or later.
My halfling's big theme is that he's paranoid of everybody (he has the reclusive Oracle curse). Along with spellcraft and stuff, he has ranks in sense motive, stealth, bluff, and disguise, because he's really furtive and untrusting.
In short, I'm a random midget conspiracy theorist with divine powers and no strength in a party of hardened warriors.

Halfling: I would like to rage and lift the boulder.
    DM: OK roll for it
Halfling: aha! Nat 20, making it 25.
DM: *sigh* you lift with your back with the shear strength you lift the boulder and hold long enough for the rest of the party to crawl underneath with just enough space for your Goliath friend. After they are safely through you let this rock fall behind you as your rage fades.

Hands down my favorite Halfling that i played is Sesto Diablo (assumed name). The Swav AF Halfling swashbuckler rogue who worked hard to achieve his goals. Once a pirate off the sword coast, he came to the main lands because his ship and crew were destroyed by a Kraken. He eventually found his way to Irabor (where his adventure started), he fought hard for what he believed in, eventually having a hand in taking down Vecna the arch-lich himself.
Through the whole campaign the party was trying to solve a string of murders, they all had one thing in common. They were found dead in their hotel room, ran through with some sort of blade (it was later found out to be a scimitar) and a single blackened rose left on the corpse. No signs of a struggle, no forced entry, nothing. This mystery spread through-out Faerun, as these murders seemed to show up in places as far south as Bauldr's gate, and as far north as Neverwinter. This mystery went totally unsolved until the fight with Vecna, as the party assumed that these murders had something to do with his revival. (and in a way it did as all the death created enough necrotic energy for Vecna to re-materialize on the prime material plane.
The party wasn't expected what happened next, as when Vecna died, Sesto went over to his body and pulled from his pack Vecna's phylactery, aswell and used the sword of kas (which we had to get because it was the only weapon that could hurt vecna). Sesto Destroyed the phylactery like the party planned, but instead of releasing the essence. Sesto stole Vecna's divine spark.
Before getting teleported away Sesto revealed that all the murders throughout faerun were by Sestos hand, and that he had been playing the party so he could steal the divine spark from vecna and bring it to his mistress the Demon Lord Glasya.
TLDR; a year long campaign ended when my chaotic/neutral halfling swashbuckler stole venca's divine spark and brought corruption upon the world.

"if anybody would actually play them" Oof, that line hit me in some kind of way.
Way way way back when I started playing 3.5, I thought Halflings were the dumbest race ever. If I wanted to play a shitty tiny character, why not be a quirky gnome rather than a boring dumb halfling who's just like a human but tiny and can't have big swords?
But as I've grown and as my taste in characters have shifted, and as 5e has been streamlining gameplay and making races less about give and take and more about letting everyone succeed in their own unique ways, I've found that I've designed more potential halfling characters than I have of any other race, and their friendly, gregarious, down home aesthetic has touched me in such a way that I think these roly-poly little girls and boys have actually become one of my favorite races (next to dwarves). Literally any time I draft up a character that needs any boost to Dexterity in any way and even when I don't, I will often find myself designing them as a halfling before anything else and I'm raring to get a chance to bust out some of these little friends in my next DnD game.

Another type of Halfling is the Kender in the Dragonlance series. They are a constantly nomadic race who travel everywhere and have a tendency to some how end up with something that doesn't belong to them ending up in their vest pocket or backpack. In most cities Kender are housed in jail cells for their own safety cause they could anger someone if say a ring falls into their vest pocket.
Kender are excellent thieves, they are so good at stealing even they don't realize that they stole something until they dig around in their pockets later. When they are accused of stealing something or are caught red handed holding it they normally say that they either found it and were going to return it to its owner or that it magically teleported into their pocket.

I have made only two halfling characters with any semblance of background. One grew up in a decent sized village and one day went with his music buddies to play at a nearby Lord's request, and when they returned home something (probably a red dragon) destroyed their village and they went their separate ways. The other grew up in a large city of predominantly humans who were extremely racist to all non-humans, including halfling, so he left with a caravan of elves passing through on their way to a temple and along the found a tome belonging to a recently deceased lich and went mad with necromantic power.

Being able to move through occupied spaces and hide behind bigger people seems like something you should be able to do if the person in question is a size-category larger. Perhaps give Halfling automatic successes where everyone else in the same situation would need to roll?
