Be careful of sayings. Someone might find a quote useful or interesting, but they are not universally applicable. There are also some who copy and past quotes to make themself appear knowledgable or wise; although they may be the farthest from applying it to themself.

When I'm really stressed out, I think of the vastness of the universe and how small and insignificant we really are in the grand scheme of things. Kind of a cosmic version of the serenity prayer.

I too think of the universe and how enormous it is, beyond our understanding. And when I think "oh it's just another boring day" I rethink "well it's a totally different day cause we are constantly moving thru space so we are always moving forward"... Then walking at night for 50 minutes with headphones on and admiring nature really helps me feel happy.

Russell, Loretta LaRoche’s TEDx talk “How to Humor Your Stress” is a great watch. She’s a Sicilian woman from NY who talks about during WW2, and even during a depression, nobody even used the word “stressed.” They laughed a lot, they saw neighbors and friends, and they had coping mechanisms we don’t use anymore. I think there’s wisdom in that. We’re often coping with the wrong things in today’s technological world, feeling more isolated-and feeling like there’s nothing that can be done about it. You mention tribes and it’s true-we once had villages. Our partners/mates/husbands/wives weren’t our “everything,” we had other people to talk with, to be mentored by, to get charity from and give charity to. I think if life becomes too stressful, which it really can, one might need to dismantle and reassemble one’s life, perhaps in stages and as a journey, until it becomes something more joyful. PS I’m really enjoying your new videos a lot… and we met a long time ago at the “Get Him to the Greek” world premiere in LA. You were supremely engaging with people. (So telling of you as an authentic human.) There was another actor (not to be named) who was not having any of it. But, you were genuinely interested in the people there no matter who approached you. Much appreciation for your sage wisdom in your videos. [ insert smiley face emoji here! ]

The best way to reduce stress is to remove the causes of stress from your life. Anything else is a poor substitute, no matter how much Jedi training you think you have. i.e. If you are living with an abuser, you have to break free. Do not go along thinking that you have to learn to accept their behaviour and adapt to it.

I have been a Buddhist for many years and listen to many teachings, along with reading Dhamma based literature. I suffered terribly with anxiety as a result of extreme abuse by my stepfather and bullying at school due to my ethnicity as a child and consequently struggled to cope with life until my mid 20’s. I have now coping strategies in place that have helped me enormously to face life positively and with hope and much happiness. You Russell are a genuinely compassionate, empathetic and giving person and your words voice much of what I think and feel and this video is a confirmation that I am on the right path. I am extremely fortunate to be able to see the goodness in mankind and to be touched by the kindness of others, however small. I judge people on their motivation and intention not the outcome of their actions, even if it is deemed contrary to my best interests. Thank you for making the world a better place.

Materialism makes us stressed out. The more you have, the more you have to maintain. The more you have, the more you want. I get a feeling of elation when I go from discovery, desire, and then acquisition. I've been trying to simplify my life and live more minimal. The more complex a system becomes the more chaotic it gets. I've been trying to acquire experiences other than possessions. I feel like getting drunk when I'm stressed (but I don't!). I try to keep things in perspective and remain calm.

Lisa Kukla, don’t we all like to be winners sometime. It’s apreciated from me that you think that. Moreover I’d appreciate your life more. It’s my ambition to homestead.
To live less in the superficial world of material.
To live of my land to have goats to grow my own to stay in a modest dwelling. The idea to swap our lifestyles isn’t a theoretical one. Truly I’d want it to be practical.

    • @lisakukla459
      @lisakukla459 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ArnoldClarke That's my goal as well, and the reason I'm dealing with all these exploitative and otherwise toxic people. The easy way would be to go back to the city and into government housing. At least then when my propane tanks are empty or my roof is leaking, I wouldn't have to decide between fixing it and eating that week. Maintenance would be a simple phone call away.
Materialism isn't the only cause of stress. Anyone who would make such a statement as above has surely lived quite a privileged and insulated life.

I know that the constant competition at work, school, or just personal unrealistic standards makes it difficult to cope with stress and anxiety. It is also important to understand your limitation. As for me, I am a bit of a perfectionist & tbh, it causes more unnecessary stress. Part of wellness is understanding the emotional component which is the ability to manage stress by recognizing feelings pinpointing the root cause for your stress levels and making changes to reduce it. Obviously, it not an overnight fix, it is something that can be managed with implementing better habits. This really helped me to understand how wellness is not just feeling well but it is as a whole mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, being well. Anyhow, enjoying your videos, keeps me in the right headspace. Thank you soo much for sharing!!

"Meditate, Meditate, Meditate." Deepak Chopra to Wayne Dyer. This is the best thing I have ever done to alleviate my own stress. The more I do it, the more I love it. It took me a few weeks to get into it several times a day (sometimes just once or twice). But man, it takes away buckets of stress, leaves you feeling good all over all day. And if you find a panicky feeling coming on, just do a quick, ten minute meditation (or longer...the more you do it the longer you will be able to stay with and enjoy it.) There are so many great free meditations here on TH-cam...what a blessing! I do some regularly over and over again, and hop around now and then when I have a particular issue a meditation offers to address.

I used to experience a lot of stress for years. I learned to work on myself and got rid of all of it. I taught myself, with time, to have faith that things will work out, because I learned self trust and self respect,- traits that make me feel safe about juggling whatever situation or person approaching me with a problem. So I feel safe in myself because I know I have the power to be in control of how I feel. Also, when it comes to feeling unsafe and not grounded in the world, I learned that starting to feel gratitude for what I do have has helped a lot. Also, learning to let go of anything that I can't control. And having faith that what's meant to be is meant to be and it's all for the better :)

Thank you for saying this. Chronic stress is such a problem. I don’t remember feeling this stressed prior to smart phones when I could leave my work at work, facebook was still fairly innocent, and I wasn’t being bombarded by fear and expectation in the media. I personally left the job I didn’t believe in and am fairly successful but even so there is still the rat race and awareness of problems in our world that seem too big for any of us to change individually. There used to be a time where we could just focus on our immediate community and making efforts to better that community, but now we are so interconnected by media, it feels that our efforts locally are no match to the global media paradigm.

You were right the first time, they’ve all been proven to alleviate stress. Those are all support systems, and it has been proven that people who have the proper support systems in place are more successful at achieving their goals. The feeling of having no control over what happens to you can cause depression and anxiety; the feeling of having or gaining back some amount of control in your life can,and most often does ,relieve stress. Having the proper support systems in place increases your chances of success in areas of your life like finances, parenting , marriage, and other relationships, etc. So now we’re back where we started, having the support systems you mentioned do lead to a less stressful life. And if anyone asks, you can tell them it was proven right here, or they can check out the article on APA.org called Manage Stress: Strengthen your support network.
PS: I also read that TH-cam, FB, etc. don’t count as support networks, people need to socialize face to face.
That’s my 5 cents that’s probably only worth a penny. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Once again, on point like an arrow Russell! Not a pessimist, just a thinker, like you. Can the Dalia Lama achieve zen if he had chaos around him 24/7? It's easier to be zen when your surroundings are zen. It's even easier to then carry that mentality with you while in the middle of a strange distant storm. People who have to live within chaotic atmospheres and still find zen, are golden to me. I treasure people who can speak like you Russell but they are usually poor and have difficult living circumstances. I'm not saying you don't have any stress because if you're breathing, you're probably going through something. However, sadly, most humans are stressed. Although money isn't everything, It's one of the major contributors of stress and anxiety because we know we need it to survive in this materialistic world. This video will help and for that I am grateful. Stay strong poor people! Stay strong the unfortunate! Stay strong those who feel alone, lost and weak! Stay strong those who are in the middle of the storm! If you manage to find happiness, if you manage to smile a real smile. Then you're stronger than you think and I am a fan of you. ✌🏾💪🏾

Good points! Spending money is a worldwide "entertainment" now. I felt kind of nauseated just writing that, lol. Ugh. However, I believe that I actually "cured" myself by doing so. It made me realize that other substances and processes I've been addicted to are in remission because, basically, I was sickened by the idea of doing them and put them down one by one. But I am still too much of a consumer - and that is a mindset as much as an activity. I don't like being "trapped." Long live liberation! Martha Woodworth The Psychic Is In.

    • @yenneferL98

I think some of us feel some things more deeply. So that means that some people in stressful situations don't feel the stress to much and have the ability to focus on things that matter in that moment, while I and so many others get completely overwhelmed with stress and make it worse in our heads to the point we can't focus, we loose control and we start panicing, we develop anxiety which ofter comes with depression. Recently I have been really focusing on the efects of stress on me vs. my friends and some people are definitely stronger and can cope with stress much easier which in the end doesn't make them anxious and sad.

As I’ve come to place where a lot of what Russell teaches I’m learning, have learned... I often find myself alone in this new place of awareness/self observance. Now I’m not lonely, and there are people who understand the concepts but there are people who immediately become overwhelmed at the thought of digging down deep into who they are, why they feel the way they feel. I often use metaphors and examples of all of the tasks in life we perform automatically and how those subroutines also play a major role in our thought patterns/habits. However, I remain encouraged to at least discuss and promote deeper personal discovery, acceptance, introspection from a third person perspective as our higher conscious self is the viewer and the listener. Very much how we perceive other people’s actions and interactions with others and in the cases we place judgement or criticism we often seem to already have an answer or the response of I would do this or that differently. Or “why would they do that to themselves?!”
However, as we turn inward; for those of us whose thoughts seem to be louder and in more control, the task of processing the feelings turns into becoming a slave to feelings and emotions. Especially and more notably, negative thought processes and behavioral patterns which I would say predominantly operate out of fear. (As a side note: I believe everything falls under fear or love. In believing that I often reflect or observe in that moment where the feelings are coming from and it’s usually quite easy to tell. )
We know when we have problems in our homes, with our cars, and with our bodies we have to address them otherwise the issues could get worse and lead to even more difficulties. However, that same practice should be applied to the mind.
As you begin to face fear, anxiety, step back and observe yourself and dig deep down as to why and understand that these are thoughts, cognitive processes that require revisiting restructuring. As for the thoughts that are mostly negative, I consider them delusions or over exaggerations of our fears/concerns.
It becomes a challenge to alter and create new behaviors and responses that stem from that steady and clear observation.
We are meant to feel emotions, but our internal thoughts should not cause us to feel ill, down, etc. A shift to facing oneself and challenging those unfruitful and debilitating mental/emotional manifestations with very grounded “present” minded clarity to see that all along, we could have processed all negative thought much like happy experiences. By that I mean accepting all experiences, accepting all that occurs outside of your thoughts and actions, and by working diligently to live a life your spirit desires unhindered by delusions and empowered by engaging in your life with clarity and acceptance.
I view this conflict of the spirit and mind as a great comfort that my body and my spirit are alerting me with warning signs at onset of accepting negative thoughts (specifically ones that lead to anxiety, stress, or depression.)
I’m still in the beginning of this journey, but the moment my thoughts attempt to return with the noise of negativity, I look at them and shut them down like two terrible friends sitting on the couch next to me giving me terrible advice.
As for people who have trouble accepting, understanding, or rejecting the concepts of awareness and observation; deeply saddens me.
As I observe them I can almost see defense mechanisms pop up to protect and validate deeply negative behaviors, and thought patterns. I deeply empathize and I can only hope to incite self discovery and questioning.
Thanks to your videos I feel comforted and relieved that there are people who are deeply passionate about mental health and working to do their part for humanity.
One love! Thank you for this video and all others you’ve posted. Cheers!!

I have gone through a lot of my life with the belief that the "grass is always greener on the other side" , with that competing with others to get to the other side so to speak. Only to find that it was not greener and in a lot of cases a shade lighter. What I am saying that society is structured to have us competing against each other over very little gain at all. This creates the stress and like it or not folks it is a killer. No need to self harm you are doing that when you are stressed. And just sit tight it will kill you. Look around you today how may of us know some middle aged people that have died. This is all so not natural. I personally have given up the stress thing intirely. Everyone should enjoy life as best they can. Do not let stress kill you.

I have felt this way about the need for fundamental change for as long as I can remember. Stress is the root cause of all problems. I feel that at a micro and macro level in our world we are seeing the results of and ideology of division and competition. It's like people got stuck on "survival of the fittest" and want to apply it to every area our lives. Nature doesn't work that way. At its core nature is fundamental unity and oneness. If we start from that perspective maybe our world will begin to reflect it.

  • @EdKendrickDDS

Per cognitive therapy theory, I think, the generalizations ('stress', 'fear', 'upset', 'extreme emotion') tend to overlook EACH INDIVIDUAL's specific internal talk. The internal talk has to do with harmony and discord with presenting circumstances. Access to the 'stress' is access to the specific internal talk that manifests in the sympathetic nervous system as 'stress'. In this profoundly sick society, there is great lack of cognitive skills to process (integrate) the thoughts about harmony ('love', 'compassion', etc.) and discord. Control dramas (shootings, bombings) are designed to keep us off balance--distracted.

The traumas aka wounds aka bad /unwanted experiences that happened to you can exponentially increase how life threatening the stress is. In my experience, the most important traumas, not that all aren't important ...but are the ones that happened 0-3 otherwise known as the ones you can't recall. The body remembers, listen to the internal voices of the individual traumas treat them as parts and oversee from today and practice self love if you can't one of the parts knows why xxxx

I believe that it's the very pursuit of happiness that leads to stress and dissatisfaction. What if instead we pursue a life of meaning, while accepting that life is full of ups and downs interspersed with periods of sheer boredom? There are times when all we can do is endure, and that is a kind of heroism.

My top tips of what’s worked for me:
Remove yourself from this fast paced hectic society and pay more attention to what is around you... influencing you every moment without you realising.
This means, live somewhere which feels inline with your true nature and values. This might mean moving.
Stop watching tv and tailor your media feeds to only feel good influences and resonate with you.
Have less. Get rid of most of your things and just have the bare minimum you need to be happy. (This is HUGE)
Downsize your life and stuff and you WILL realise you don’t need much and hence you don’t need to earn that much money. FREE yourself.
Take yourself away and realise that societies pressures are just one bubble you can step in and out of.
Step out of it, and you will feel free to live your life how YOU want.
When you step out of this stress bubble of society and get rid of all your stuff you will see just how much it was weighing you down.
Pay attention to what’s influencing you, we are ALL SOO much more sensitive than we think!

Nobody's pain should be the sole motivation for another's relationship to wealth. People who do earn an honest living trying to positively impact and improve the quality of life for others should be rewarded.

Very lucidly conveyed Russell. They do say that some stress is beneficial and I think if you are ambitious when you are in your younger years it can be a good thing. However, it can also be very insidious if forced upon people who do not have that mindset - those who are more thoughtful or empathic or sensitive or going through tough times for example which can lead to very negative results from breakdowns to worse. As for those who go into Government - they know it is stressful and they think they are able to handle it at the frontline - how they communicate between governments can result in stress for the people because they can cause many issues that ripple down and have a clear impact on people's lives.

I thought that jiu jitsu and other martial arts helped relieve stress, but it was quite the opposite for me. However, routine exercise, proper nutrition, meditation and positive relationships is very helpful. You also touched upon a career that fits your personality and a less materialistic view of the world. Great video!

A poor wretched man at his ropes end
Without sufficiency of income or pay
The due date for his multitude of debts
Was the morning of the very next day
He knew precisely what was the reality
And had already counted the cost
The collectors will arrive in the morning
And his family's house will be lost
He descended into the quicksand of guilt
    Fear and grief compounding despair
Not a single strand of hope within reach
Left for this man to cling to was there
He looked upon his wife and children
For his failure he's solely responsible
But for him no course of action remained
    Nor any solution seemed possible
Behold, a dreaded knock at the door
Much to this poor wretched mans dismay
"Why, oh why, are the collectors so early?"
"Oh please, oh please, not today!"
He then proceeded to open his door
And there in the rain holding a letter
Stood an innocent little messenger boy
Sent from a friend and not a collector
The messenger boy told the poor wretch
"Your old friend in fact did so inherit"
"An absolute fortune of pure gold"
"And with you he intends to share it"
His friend had penned a letter of promise
"I will meet you at the bank tomorrow"
"Then I will pay each one of your debts"
"I will release you from pain and sorrow"
Having read the letter from his dear friend
    Delivered by that messenger boy
The poor wretched man leaped in the air
With an incredible abundance of joy
His spirit was filled with the joy of hope
And from fear he gained his release
He bore no more grief nor felt any sorrow
Guilt and despair transformed into peace
But what did the poor wretch truly have
And on what did such great joy depend?
He still had no money of which to speak of
Just a promise in letter from a friend
If the poor wretch believed not his friend
What outcome would then have resulted?
He would have remained in his despair
And his friend would feel greatly insulted
But this poor wretched man was faithful
He believed and trusted his friend
Faith in a promise was the very foundation
On which that poor wretch's joy did depend
This is the power of faith and belief
And consequence of distrust and doubt
One leads to joy and the other to grief
But that's not all that his story's about
Those who have ears now let them hear
A layer of meaning beneath his story
Things are not all that they would seem
Within in the words of this allegory
The poor wretched mans friend is Jesus
The debt owed is for sins and depravity
The collection date is impending death
And that poor wretched man is humanity
Trust His promise of life and redemption
Let not doubt and despair to remain
Believe in Him who paid for salvation
The Joy of hope in His grace is to gain

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord...
He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken...
He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed...
All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him...
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him...
having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross...
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit...
and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death...
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

I love your videos. I’m grateful you have chose to give back to others by sharing what you have learnt and studied. It’s obvious you are a very curious person about life. These help so many people that may not have the finances to hire therapist. I’m impressed with your knowledge and how you continue to search for answers. I hope you realize what a great thing you are doing. Plus it’s not just your personal experiences, it’s the knowledge you have researched to back it. You have worked hard on this stuff. Thank you.
