I pulled myself out of a major depression by getting out of my own way. I started decoupaging flower pots. Then I started feeding the birds and the squirrels. I began to be fully present and connecting to everything around me in new ways. Noticing the the beautiful skyscapes. The moon. Which led to spiritual books and videos...which led to meditation. Which saved my life. Love this...and both of you. 🙏❤️

I enjoyed this talk. My granddaughter was into pour painting, and while babysitting, she wanted to paint. So I'm all hung up with how messy this would be, would we have time to do this, would I be able to do it, and so on. So here is my 11 year old quietly guiding her grandma each step of the way. She goes first to show me, and her 1st one isn't her best, and she laughs about it. She does another, and it's much better. And the whole time, she's humming, and talking to herself, and totally in the moment. It occurred to me that I needed to learn a lesson from my granddaughter. So I took a deep breath and decided to chill out, enjoy myself, and see if I could be creative. And by the end of our painting time, I had a painting to hang in my bathroom by me! I also had a painting to hang in our bedroom by her. Every time I look at them, I remember this day. I wish I could go to one of Laura's creative workshops. She seems lovely.

    THIS is the main channel.
You know the saying, “depression is a focus on the past, and anxiety is a focus on the future?,” I began to add, “creation is a focus on the presence.” I think this is exactly what Laura has discovered. Absolutely resonate with this. My daughter decided when she was nine years old that crafting and slow living would be how she would live her life. Now a high school graduate she has a focus on eudaimonia, first and foremost, which she intends to fold into her higher educational pursuits.
Congrats on the book, dear Laura!
Love the two of you as a couple; and when you do videos together.
We did hypnobirthing training too! (Many years ago). My amazing husband was able to use hypnobirthing through an emergency c-section. I felt NOTHING, but pressure.
    Bless you both.
I hope you will be able to feature my book on this channel, as I feel it’s a natural companion to everything you’re speaking about on both this and your other channel. Freedom from within and Freedom from without is how we merge the concepts of your two channels. The book is, “Sage Words, Freedom,Book One” Thanks. See you friday, mates.

I'm a mum of 12. Lots of neurodiversity among us, and three came to us from extreme trauma. We're really keen on self-care. A running joke round here is "Mama does art so that she doesn't go crazy". :) But it is truly one of my most treasured coping tools. Gardening, hiking, and music are others. Often, they intersect. I set my environment with incense and intention. Meditation, I think, would be great to integrate. Brilliant talk. Thanks, Laura!

As someone who suffers from C-PTSD and major recurring depression I can say the creative act, any creative act can help the agony of these conditions. Sometimes you feel things that may only be communicated through artistic expression. Art fecundates the spirit. And whoever uses that spirit creatively is an artist. Writing, painting, sculpture, gardening et cetera all provide us with a means to truly express the essence of our being. Thank you both for this video. Art therapy should be a major part of any recovery program.

Russell, I really enjoyed this, your wife seems a really lovely person, there was so much about humanity I took from this (loved the part where Laura spoke of noticing the colours of the sky) and I also enjoyed your recapping of what Laura was saying. I gave up a 20yr career 18mths ago, to try and start living a happier life out of this matrix world and I'm currently a community-enhanced social prescriber and psychological wellbeing practitioner with a mental health organisation and I like what I do. We create and support grassroots activities across our 4 centres, many of them creative activities to support and lift people to happier places by being a companion on their journey, such a lovely ethos. Thank you Laura and Russell, you all have a blessed day 🙏

All crafts are essentially a wonderful mix of active creativity, and meditation. The ability of a pleasurable creative activity to 'take you out of yourself' is amazing. It's the act that truly matters...a successful creation is subjective anyway, so don't focus on the quality of the result, rather the joy of the process. Xx

Funny how we so enthusiastically bypass the simplest of remedies seeking the more complicated, misguidedly thinking there is more value in the complicated! My light went on, thanks to a Buddhist monk who said to me, after a 15 minute diatribe of my meditation issues, ....'Let Go Let God'. I did and still do 30 years on. p.s. what a truly lovely vid. Hi Russell and Laura…whilst my daughter was hypno-birthing I was making candles and soaps…I think crafts are essential in grounding yourself whatever your craft might be… if you experiment you’ll always find something that you’re good at…craft and art are purely subjective so there’s no need for anyone to compare their art to someone else’s… this is a materialisation of your individuality and so you should be proud of anything you make or do that makes you feel good…just go for it and have fun ! 🙏🏻🕉

Ms. Brand I love painting however because I judge myself harshly then I destroy it. I realized that my hands had to be part of the art and I discovered spray paint. I sprayed 3 pumpkins different shades, one looked like fall, greens and orange and yellow, also do painting with my hands 🙌 and it takes me away from myself! I have tried the breathing technique and I go away for awhile and I love the feeling. I have been doing ice cold showers and baths, water 34 degrees, it does wonders for my body inflammation. Laura's 1000% right! I have sang since birth, practically, and the number one rule of singing is controlling your breath. If you want to hit and sustain a note you HAVE to have breath control. It takes me to what I call The Zone, where nothing matters but the song, you ARE the song. In the moment, the song is the mantra, if you will. I tell people all the time that you shouldn't worry about your voice, focus on the song. It's a great way to release emotions in a constructive way.

I’ve started doing crafts in the last year, mostly making pretty decorative plaques and such. Laura’s book is just what I need - just ordered it. I would do more crafts but am intimidated. I’m keen to try the projects and the techniques in her book.
I have found that what I do already (including cooking & baking, which I think is a craft, too) really adds joy as it is such a thrill to make something. I spent my career in offices & now have the opportunity to really work with my hands, which was so limited in the past.
My goal in what I do is to find my authentic self, since I’m happiest when I am most myself. Sometimes that takes a lot of excavation to get there, getting past the carapaces and detritus that built up over the years. I expect that will be a continuing effort for the foreseeable future. Happy to have a new way to do that (through crafts).

I’m into creative expressive movement, among many other things. I LOVE helping people rediscover their natural impulses to move freely, expressively and with joy!!!!

I can say so many lovely things about this video. From the very first few seconds I was smiling warmly. You see, I am an artist and what Laura is saying echoes firmly within me. When I see my grand children pretty much the first things we do involve some creative activities. Other times we go walking in a nearby forest and exploring nature or going to a beach. Another activity which is great to share is cooking. I can't agree more with your philosophy on living and sharing together in doing and making.

Wow! This content is so synchronistic to my situation and there was no indication of the content in the title. I am an artist and energy healer that holds therapeutic art sessions. Online and in person. The issue that I usually get is exactly what Laura speaks of. Everyone afraid to just release and let it result as it will. This is the entire purpose for my sessions. The healing comes from not necessarily having an expected result and allowing the oneself to be present and engaged in the process. I usually avoid reference photos or paintings because then judgment immediately comes in. I recently wanted to host a pour session (a technique that I am not an expert at). When mentioning it to another formerly trained art teacher, she immediately burst my bubble with a bunch of musts and shoulds that she felt I needed to host the session! It was supposed to be fun and releasing, not to be exhibited at the MET. Needless to say, I still haven’t hosted it due to the fear and judgment she put in me that it may not be “perfect”.
Anyhow, I will try the technique Laura speaks of in regards to my new endeavor of livestreaming on Twitch. Wish me luck 🍀

All you really need to host your pour session (whatever that is!) is your natural enthusiasm! Why not just do it and have fun? Don't let anyone burst your bubble. I bet you're amazing in your sessions. I used to think I had to be an expert in something before teaching it. Someone once said to me, "You teach best what you most need to learn". Turns out they were right! Just teach what you're excited about. Not being an expert and not having perfect results will also help your group members to let go of their anxiety around results and just enjoy the process. 😊💛🌈
P.S. Good luck with your Twitch (whatever that is!) thing

Wow creativity is the self. Yeah that makes sense. What I find most interesting is I believe that to be very profound. Usually something profound is so sweet like a like a breath of fresh lilacs on a chilly morning different because is so true that it's dull like it's obvious the thousandth time a person has painted a wave.

@@corvidmurder66 it helped set me in this whole new chapter in life. Gives you a very good set of tools to apply when that switch turns on that there's much more to life than what our minds are programmed with from birth

So glad I saw this as I am a teacher of fibre arts and sometimes I am not clear why I am doing the work I am doing. This interview has given me a little motivation to look at my work differently. Thank you Russel for your comment about democratizing creativity.

I absolutely believe humans are creative beings and when we don't access that part of ourselves we can get ill and stressed. Being creative in any way, doodling, gardening, making things, knitting, stitching, painting, colouring.....just do it, enjoy it and your brain will get a lovely break and you will become more productive in other areas of your life. When you are in the moment focusing on something, using your hands, harnessing your creativity, you are unable to worry about anything else therefore we can give our minds a rest from our problems 😊 A friend of mine has halved their medication since taking up crocheting as recommended by their counsellor and I thought they are stitching there way to freedom. 🥰

How brilliant to write an activity book for adults. Parents so often facilitate these activities for their kids. It's wonderful to write a book for them where their children can join in.

Great conversation! Love it! Thank you both 😊
I agree that who we are is our own creativity. We know that intuitively as children and we explore creatively without inhibition. As grown-ups we often need practices to help us lose our inhibitions and become free again, like a child. And there's probably nothing more worth doing than that.
    ✌️💛🌈
