    The main difference I've seen in reviews of people who rate the KTM off-road and those who say its not good is the pace and confidence the rider has with it. The KTM seems most happy with its pushed up in revs and really thrown into corners etc...if you don't it'll stall/slip/feel uncomfortable compared to other bikes in the class which still feels good when you take it easy (like the Himalayan or a Suzuki/Kawi dual sport). It's a tricky thing, as its marketed as a beginner bike, but from what I've seen I think it's best suited to an intermediate+ rider, at least if you're taking it off-road.

      @manash49 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Couldn't agree more. This bike loves revs which kinda feels intimidating for new riders off road. The bike chassis was derived from ktm 450 which says a lot about how it behaves.

      I think you are making an interesting point. I'm a KTM390ADV owner and a low intermediate offroad rider. My initial reaction to owning it was the 390 was more confidence-inspiring than the DRZ400 I had previously, yet I really don't wring it out and have indeed stalled it out at inopportune times. My takeaway from your comment (and after watching the video) is to use this bike a bit more aggressively than I'm used to. The bike can do it; I need to catch up skill-wise to what it can do.

    Your excitement riding the 390 is exactly how I felt when I rode one for the first time yesterday.
    A mix of on/off road sections and that little puppy just blew me away.
    I come from a lot bigger bikes and I was very surprised how good of a package it is.
    Holding this 230lbs 6 footer is no easy task for any suspension.
    Thanks for doing this and comparing it to the Honda 🍻🍻
    Shalom from Israel 🇮🇱

    interesting to see a direct comparison between these two bikes, since they're both marketed as 'lightweigt advs'. In reality though, the bikes' natures are quite different. One's a buzzier single that looks like it can be pushed quite hard on singletrack, the other is a bit more lumbering, but arguably better over longer distances on the road. Both bikes are compromised. I own a 2016 CB 500 x (17 inch rims) and I wouldn't dream of ripping it around these trails at the speeds shown. As a lightweight tourer, though, it's an excellent bike for the outlay, and can tackle fire roads and easy trails when the mood takes you. The Rally Raid mods make the CB a much better prospect off road, but you're talking close to £2K+ for suspension, spoked rims, switchable ABS etc, so the initial buying price starts to look less of a bargain. Add bars, guards, tyres, engine protection etc.and you're in the realms of a good used Tenere 700, which would knock spots of both bikes. This is why making direct comparisons between bikes is fraught. It really does come down to the rider, in terms of expectations, preferred riding style and capability. Honda have 'upgraded' the front suspension for 2022, but I suspect it'll still be a handful off road, at a reasonably spirited pace. Now If they put the X's parallel twin in the KTM frame, you'd have a really nice well rounded lightweight adv :) Maybe the new Tuareg 660 will set the benchmark, although it's significantly more expensive than both the bikes reviewed here...CCM also promised a 650 version of the GP, but got sidetracked with their Spitfire range. This was a pity as the GP450 was an absolute unicorn on paper, that suffered from a poor choice of available engines, IMO At the end of the day, we can't expect a budget all rounder to tour like a Goldwing, carve like an R6, rip trails like a 450 SF X and run all week on a teaspoon of fuel like a Honda Activia (162mpg!)....which is all the more reason to own lots of different bikes :)

    Interesting comparison 🤔speaking as an owner of a 2020 500x with Rally-raid upgrades, including the level 2 suspension system. I agree that out of the box the ktm is a better bike off road, however I don't think it is after the RR upgrades that I have done🤔 being able to turn off the rear ABS is a big advantage for the ktm, but I personally think the traction control on such low CC engines is totally not needed. I nearly went for the 390 when I bought mine but ktm's reliability put me off🤔i still love my cb500x for the great all rounder that it really is😃i love your vids, but please do yourself a favour & get yourself a good engine guard for your bike, I have substantial dents in mine from big rock hits, if I didn't have it my engine casing would be cracked😬 just my observation bud😉

    I probably subscribed to your channel over a year ago ..because I was interested in the cb500 and you have some really great content.. we moved to Georgia 🇺🇲after my retirement in New York.. I had a Yamaha 650 cruiser in New York.. and have never done adventure riding. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on the CB.. but then I started watching videos on the 390.. aside from the good things I've seen on the 390... It's the price point that sells me.. it has the hand guards the crash bars the 12 volt outlet ,Great electronics.. for at least $700 less than the CB with none of that equipment 🤷 but the big problem is because of covid my local dealer has been out of stock on the 390 for over a year and probably won't get them until after January 😢 I know you've had the CB for quite some time and for you to give the 390 a glowing review.. just makes my final decision that much easier.. thanks 🤗

  • @DJKHOTTA
    @DJKHOTTA หลายเดือนก่อน

    I know it's been like 2 years, but one thing to really consider is the 100lb of weight difference between them, besides the obviously better shocks on the 390, that makes a world of difference going off road, the 390 is shorter, narrower and much lighter, it's an overall better machine for off road than the CB500X, the tires make or break the experience though, and you have some bad ass tyres on them.

    will last a 100k .
    the finishing kit on a ktm and 401 is far more direct use for off raod and little b roads and is a solid platform.
    After that it's lost if you had bigger bikes and no power on big roads very lumpy under 4k rpm.
    just a difficult bike .
    they both are lovely in there own way.

Stiff, uncomfortable, sudden rev limiter that kicked in every gear and made wheel standing dangerous, really lurchy in slow riding. Maybe the ADV is a bit better, but same DNA. It really only works 6-10k rpm which is where you rode it, if you'd been a touch more aggressive you'd have hit the limiter in every gear. Given the type of track I'm guessing whatever bike had the smaller displacement is going seem better.
