  • ok guys so I still see people asking about how to keep MTC off when riding offroad. But if you have a 2022 model or 2022 software you don't need to mess with MTC!

    I remember seeing somewhere before I bought my 390 that turning off MTC only partially disabled it, and there was some other trick to "fully" disabling it, but based on this I must have misunderstood the process. As you said, it seems like offroad mode tames the mtc and turning off mtc disables it completely. That said, I think I'll keep turning mine off for the most part. with it on, it becomes pretty difficult to break the rear loose on dirt if you want to slide it out a bit in corners, and the few times I've ridden with it turned on (because i've turned the bike off and forgot to disable it again) I've had a few close calls with the edge of the trail because the back tire wanted to track rather than slide.

    I went for a group ride with some dual sport bikes and I was on my 390adv with stock tires. Everyone else had knobbies.
    We hit a steep hill that started as hard pack but then transitioned to loose gravel. The dual sport bikes ran up the hill while rooosting/spinning their rear tires. I was in off-road mode and made it up fine without spinning and roosting. Yes it was not as fast but I felt stable the entire time. So I totally agree with this video.
    I had a cb500x with tkc 80s and remember being in a similar situation. The rear end would try to slide out.

    • @donewhiskey
      @donewhiskey 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes but knobbies look cool af. No but, you are a better dirt rider than I am. I see people do just fine on the stock tires, but they were not the ones for me.

    I hear what you’re saying, but I have the 2023 390 adv, and to be honest, the difference between TC on vs off in Offroad mode is massive.
    Yes, TC on in offroad mode let’s you slide a bit, but man does it teach you some TERRIBLE control habits.
    I watched your vid and then took mine out for a spin in the hills with the TC on (offroad mode) and when I switched it back off at the end of the day (to compare), it was radically different.
    With it on, you can pin the throttle and drop the clutch and it will find traction. With TC OFF, it’s all on you as a rider. For me, I find the TC system great for tricky hill climbs and for some fun. But for developing my skills I much prefer to have it off.
    Just personal preference. Thanks for the vid!!

      That's some pretty good feedback! I do still sometimes go back forth with MTC but for the most part on a hard trail ride I really don't want to be fiddling with the menu if I happen to stall.
      So at the end of the day yes there are differences between offroad mode and offroad mode with MTC off. But do you need to turn MTC off to ride offroad? Definitely not.

      @@furadride852 yeah, I completely agree, it’s a pain in the ass to turn off, and is A LOT of fun to have on. Can really just rag it without any worries! :)

    390 already has all the other tricks for easy off road traction baked into the design. not too heavy, not too light. Not too tall but not too short. Not powerful, but by no means underpowered. It was definitely made to be really easy to ride even with no electronic aids. As a dirt rider since childhood I can’t see the tc being something I’d be very into at all but it’s really cool that KTM did give it another mode that actually works on the dirt now👍

      There is a India specific Model called 390 Adventure X. No Quickshifter, NO MTC, no electroncis nannies other than off road ABS. the trail riders prefer that model more. And it's cheaper

    Yeah offroad mode on my 23 is awesome, I can't wait to put motoz tires on it. It feels like the bike almost takes off faster in gravel cuz the motor just shoots way up into the powerband due to wheelspin 😆
    Have you used the offroad tc much in mud and loose sutff? Does it still keep up?

  • @justinpotter4131
    @justinpotter4131 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey man. Good video. I have a 2022. I have noticed on steep sandy climbs, rough washboards, or loose gravely dirt climbs, you still really need MTC off, because otherwise you will eventually bog down and lose power to continue climbing.
    From my understanding, offroad MTC allows for something like 2 full rotations on the rear per single rotation of the front. Allowing you to break free a little bit. But MTC will still kick in and start limiting your power if traction has been broken and the rear is spinning consistently at a higher rate than the front.
    If you could find that same hill, but 4-5 times longer of a climb at a steep enough grade, I think you would be able to experience what I'm describing.
    I think there is a use case for all of the modes. But I also am too annoyed by having to constantly plan ahead and switch modes, and ultimately just find the mode that works best for all conditions and stick to it 90% of the time. MTC is the annoying one, because it automatically activates itself at every start. I am just in the habit of turning it off before any extensive offroad ride, because it's easier to deal with it being off than it is dealing with it being on when you NEED it off.

    • @furadride852
      @furadride852  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So, we actually do plenty of decent hill climbs with MTC on. The bike does like to bog but that's more an issue of it making torque above 7000 rpm. I find that if you feather the clutch to keep the flywheel spinning it allows you to keep climbing when the engine wants to bog. th-cam.com/video/PqJn68zmVlk/w-d-xo.html

    Ride a long section of "washboard" dirt road with Off-road/Off-road ABS/MTC On and you'll be stopping to disable MTC...it's a horrible experience...

      yep we have done that plenty and I actually did stop once to disable MTC but it didn't make much of a difference. What I did find helped on the wash boards is softening up the rear shock. Like all the way down to 5 clicks. Makes it so the rear tire skips around a lot less.

    If you have any sort of TC on you don't even get full power on dry tarmac. You can't even make a wheelie. It falls on it's face if you give it full throttle. Also, Offroad ABS makes the front brake bite a LOT harder! With Offroad ABS you can make stoppies. With ABS fully on.. Not so much.

    • @furadride852
      @furadride852  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I literally wheelie my 390 every time I ride it with MTC on. I specifically go on short little rides in this area just to practice wheelies.

    • @cossiedrifter
      @cossiedrifter 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have to turn MTC off to do a wheelie. Otherwise it will lift the front wheel and then just die and drop the wheel back down. With MTC off I don't even have to try. Super easy to wheelie and ride out both first and second gear on the back wheel.

    • @furadride852
      @furadride852  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cossiedrifterthat makes sense. But for trail riding you don't really need to carry wheelies. Maybe only a few feet to clear obstacles which is no issue with MTC on.

      @@furadride852not sure if it's a regional thing but if you look in the manual it says off-road ride mode disables anti wheelie on page 34.
      Do you usually ride with ride mode set to off-road?
      I'm new to riding this is my first real bike. My last bike was a KTM 50 sx mini so you can imagine it was while ago 😂. Not quite at the level of trying to learn wheelies yet but I tried launching the bike and I'm pretty sure I felt the front wheel pop up a bit before the power cut.
