    I like how you mention the “sweet smell” because it’s true. I work in a funeral home and I remember this man was in refrigeration for about 7 months before he could be properly cremated. It was a coroner case too so the body was autopsied and decomposed faster. The family did a witness cremation and the man looked like rotten pulled beef and while it smelled gross, there was a sweet scent to it. Let’s just say I no longer eat barbecue ribs- or blueberry muffins for that matter.

      When I was younger there was a family tomb from the early 1800s and it was out in the middle of nowhere, just abandoned farm land on the NH/Maine border. I didn't take anything or disrespect the vault in any way regardless everything was pretty well decomposed all the caskets and remains because it was open to the elements. It actually smelled really good like wood and rich earth with an underlying sweetness that could only be human decomposition.

    It's amazing how quickly a deceased person is forgotten, as though they never existed at all. You would be shocked to learn how many people die and have NO ONE show up at their memorial. You mentioned the record keeping for defunct cemeteries, but I want to let you know, that where I live in North Carolina, there’s a large cemetery my dad was buried in, and about 30-40yrs prior, my grandma had purchased four plots there. Well, the plans showing the plots were old and hard to read. Go figure. They put my dad in the ground, and had to take him back out to move him again, because they read the plans upside down and buried him in the wrong spot the first time. This is a very well up-kept cemetery, with lots of people buried there, it was traumatic to me. I had just turned 18 the month before and I went through literal hell. Probably didn’t help that he died because he took his own life and I found him. But that’s been 20yrs ago now, the pain and heartache has never gone away, I’ve just learned how to live my life with the pain. 😢

    Yes, bodies leak when they’re decomposing, right through the caskets. In a mausoleum, under each casket, there is a trough that tilts to the back where all of the chambers are connected to a drain pipe that empties into a septic tank; there is also a small stack pipe that draws fresh air in to keep things flowing and lessens decomposition odors. If the stack pipe isn’t maintained by pulling out leaves and debris, it plugs up and the drains won’t work at all, causing fluid to build up, which is a combo of rehydrated body liquids and condensation(there’s a LOT of condensation) and will drip out and down the front.

    • @bridgetbright6258
      @bridgetbright6258 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    • @happymack6605
      @happymack6605 2 ปีที่แล้ว +98

      @@bridgetbright6258 Hi there. Embalming only slows down decomposition for a little while; just enough so they don’t smell during time before burial. The embalming fluid also is tinted so the body looks more natural after the blood is drained. Placing the body in the refrigeration unit after it’s prepared(embalming, clothing, makeup and hair) does most of the work at slowing decomposition before the wake and burial 💕

    Thank you so much for covering this story, Lamont. It's yet another good example of why mausoleums are not a good idea for burial. There are more and more mausoleums all over the US falling into disrepair and abandonment.. because sooner or later the money for perpetual care runs out or is embezzled. Besides, buildings don't last forever. Aquamation for me! And I've told my family I will come back and haunt them if they don't respect my wishes. I will too!

      Technically all buildings will some day be abandoned buildings. I agree though once the mausoleum has been condemned the owner should be forced to move the bodies at their expense. If someone really did get tricked into buying a graveyard and they thought it was a house I can see them not wanting to front the bill. But once all that gets worked out whoever owns the graveyard you have to pay to have the bodies either exhumed and a new mausoleum built or just move somewhere else.

    From what I understand about the leaky stuff on the floor and out of the wall IS actually body fluid from the caskets. Embalming fluid and blood, and just the body breaking down. All mausoleums leak, but newer ones have drainage pipes when the coffin "burps" the fluid. That's what they call it. I have a friend in the funeral home business. It's really gross and not to mention how it makes the people visiting their loved ones feel. Thank you for reporting. It is interesting seeing these! Oh yeah, I'd definitely change my shoes.

    • @metaldiscipline3955
      @metaldiscipline3955 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're correct about the embalming fluid leaking on the floor and walls, however morticians clear blood, and bag organs from the deceased to slow decomposition and mottling of skin tissue for viewings. However this does not stop moisture from affecting the gases from causing the remains to liquify so to speak. If the "burp" chambers aren't properly cared for, this is the result! It is an absolute shame and disgrace when cemeteries and mausoleums are outright abandoned like this!

Unless you are cremated with fire or alkaline hydrolysis there will be decay and smell. A crypt burial is very similar to a ground burial as far as the breakdown of the body. A good, maintained crypt will have drains, vents, and fans behind the scenes to reduce the smell. However, depending how the corpse drains in a crypt the body may somewhat mummify, preserving bone and skin a little longer than a ground burial. What's leaking out is rain water.
    The roof has an issue with keeping the rain water out and water gets into. In 90% of the cases these what happens.
    It is unlikelly that decomposing body material would escape. Since it would also have to go through the coffin.
    With coffins being still intact it would not be likelly that body material would be washed out with rain water. However the water will get painted by contacting rust, dust or other materials.

    Those fun liquids are what’s called human soup. Putrefaction occurs as part of the decomposition process, and when a body is left in a sealed casket the lack of oxygen combined with a dozen other factors causes the soft tissue to liquify. As the body decomposes, gasses build up and eventually the expanding gas will cause the tissue to rupture and explode, and eventually the gas will fill the casket and the pressure will cause the gasket to pop and the casket will leak. You don’t notice it in a ground burial and a properly maintained mausoleum with a properly maintained drainage system won’t ever show these signs either.
    The real problem here with moving remaining bodies is going to be the numerous biohazards the bodies present. Don’t forget that not only are we talking about human soup in ruptured caskets but whoever does the cleanup is contending with untold gallons of formalin which is heavily carcinogenic. The bodies at this point will also probably need to be cremated unless they haven’t liquified yet, though I wouldn’t put a lot of money on that being much of a possibility. At this point it’s probably better to seal the whole thing up so the formalin doesn’t seep into the ground or present an undue hazard to the living.

      Most of the time if you get embalmed youve got about 2 weeks max before decomp takes place (not including things like caskets etc.)
      Also in mosoleums if the pressure changes due to not being sealed, heat etc and you bloat like stated above, when you pop you can actually blow the faceplate off the wall and now youre running down on to the floor in one big puddle.

    That brown stuff on the carpet is moss which is formed in damp places. Since the mausoleum had so much dampness from the leaks and poor conditions, that's why it formed. The markings running down the stones of the mausoleum is simple age-related wear and tear due to being in the elements. All that being said, it is a true shame what was allowed to happen to this place. Caring about cemeteries seems to be a lost art. I can't tell you how many times I visit my loved ones graves only to see people allowing their dogs to use it as a toilet.
