2005 W203 here: Nice videos, great insight and troubleshooting. I have the same problem intermittent dashboard gear indicator sometimes showing white bar, sometimes perfectly fine. after a few drives it comes back and I have to unplug the connector a few times, insert the toothpick and all is good again , crazy huh? I used the same method placed a toothpick on the bigger pin connector on the front end of the assembly. Did you ever find out if it's the wiring connector or the pins on the gear assembly? if it was the soldering as you mentioned in the video, how did your tech soder it ? do you think replacing the gear assembly itself would fix it or its more likely the 2 wired connectors? thanks in advance
Thanks for the video. I have the same problem with a 2005 c180k. Can that terminal with the loose wire be accessed without removing the whole centre console?
Hi, I've been watching your videos. I have the same car and my car also does not shift into gears. On my cluster I can only get the c and not the s. Please help. I've been stuck with this problem for a year now.
The quick way is to get the second hand one from the car stripers. About the letter c you just need to press at the bottom of the gear shifter where there's c and s while the key is on first position and look at the cluster if it is changing. C means Comfortable shifting and S means standard shifting.

Hi James, thanks for this video. My car is a C200 2005. I was buying fuel at a filling station and the car refused to move from there because the gear is not engaging even though it shows on the dashboard that it's working. So when I switch it off for a few minutes, it will come back but when I drive it won't move past the first gear. If I should apply breaks maybe at a robot, I need to switch it off again for a few minutes before the gear can engage. What do you think?
It has letters on the dashboard showing PRNDs. or it ends with c If letter D and small s or c does not appear when switching on the car that’s when you can know it won’t shift up. If you say it’s showing everything is in order on the dashboard after turning ignition, then you should get a diagnosis tool to scan the problem, it might be another issue. Limp mode is caused by many things.
@@jamesmadalitsomchenga5308 Thanks James. All those letters are appearing and when I move the gear, the dash board shows the appropriate gear that I have moved it to. The letter 'S' also show but it's usually in capital.
Hi Mr. Sikhweni. I’m not sure where to buy in Jhb. I’m based in Cape Town. Try to check on Facebook ( market place) and on gumtree. They are plenty second hand spare shops in Jhb and Pretoria.
I played with that connection and got a plastic toothpick jammed in the same as you. It drives ok for a little bit and then the issue happens again, then it is ok on the next drive. I was hoping this could fix it. I hate the thoughts of spending money on a 2005 car ha
same with me intermittent, drives fine and then it acts up again dashboard shows a white bar on D, play with the key a little remove and insert and good again. Did you end up replacing the gear shifter assembly or was it the connector/wires? Don't know how to repair a wire issue or/and pin connector problem. THanks in advance
Hey Andile. Your car has a different problem. If it is just swinging it might be clogged fuel pump which fails to pump the fuel to the engine. Check with the mechanic in your area.
My car is exactly like your, that's if yours is a C180, it has the exact same problem, I went to go buy all the tools to fix it tomorrow to take everything apart, I hope it's a loose contact aswell...the only thing I didn't see is how you removed the black inner plastic where the cup sits...I can't figure it out..but tomorrow morning I must get it fixed...I even have the same engine light on and the SRS airbags light on....eish...does your car eat petrol like mine?..
My car is C200 kompressor. C class models has that problem of gear shifter especially when the mileage is bit high. Search from other videos how to remove the cup and its holder. When the car is in Limp mode it uses more fuel. Mine was also taking more fuel b4 fixing it. . You should also check air filter if its clean. I found that the motor to right hand next to the module the insulation or the coating of the tiny two wires that goes to the module from that motor disintegrated in some areas. The wires were exposed and were toughing each other at the bottom of the motor, so check that and insulate them. Then after, I heated the module (BOARD) at the temperature of 200 degrees for 8 minutes. If you have the SRS and check engine, the first thing to check is the alternator brushes or (diode). It is not producing enough voltage to the system. Just let someone to test your car voltage first. Mine I have to buy that diode. I have been driving like that for 3 years because does not affect the engine. Hope it will help.
@@jamesmadalitsomchenga5308 thank you very much I will certainly do that...I also plan on doing service B myself too... back in the day this car use to move very smoothly..

I want to ask what kind of technician can help me or i should be looking for? i have been telling my mechanic that its that cable, thats losing power and not speaking to the compter o turn on the gears. please assist. are you on whatsapp
Hi Lindiwe. I thought of giving it to a technician to fix the module because I don’t have that intelligence for softwares in the car. But later I took a try to learn more of its trouble shooting. And I found the wires that were having bad coating. I just re-coated the wires. Get auto electrician to do it. If not buy a secondhand module and replace it. I’m far with you so it’s complicated to help you physically.
Hi James. I have two more of the gear selector things. And when you put all of them on, the LCD screen to switch on the gears goes blank. I suspect that it's the actual terminal that is faulty or short circuiting. I use a peg like you did in the part 2 video
@@lindiwemathonsi5751 if so it means there is short circuit somewhere along the wires. Find out someone who fixes electrical appliances to do a troubleshooting test and figure out which wires or boards has loose connections and he can fix them.
