Some waterproof glue would add a lot of strength to those unbraced joints.
I built a similar bench to this for my Eagle project except I used treated wood that I stained and made it wider with 3 2”x6” and used 4”x4” for the legs.

We have an old wall in our garden that's 2ft tall and formed into a planter (with a hollow in the middle for plants). This would look fantastic. One question though - how would I fix the bench part to the top of the wall?
I would use some L brackets underneath the seat that attaches one part to the bench and the other to the wall. I'd use 4 to keep it snug but maybe with a small gap between the bench and the wall so the water run off doesn't transfer from the wall to the bench.
id love to see you build an L shaped bench to see how you make the turn. im going to build one but not sure if i want it to look like i just screwed 2 benches together or make it 1 seamless bench.

2 redwood 2x6's, 2 redwood 2x4's, and 2 regular 2x4's.
What length of the boards did you start with? I am thinking 12' Thanks

Too many screws and wood pieces put together to make it looks bulky.

You inspired me to do the project my mom wanted to be done. I was planning on using my drill but my father said the nail gun was faster. Then he wanted a back and armrests and something to cross at the base. He and I ended up doing the project. Mom said thanks.

Can I use old pallet timber?
You should be able to as long as it is thick and strong enough. You can also make it out of inexpensive construction grade 2x4's and 2x6's.
awe, i just passed up a bunch bc i couldnt get into my car. but i could have used my battery circular saw and chunked it out, dang
If I were to make a bench with the same legs but my bench would be 6 feet long and 3 feet wide. Can I adjust the leg width bigger to match the 3 feet while maintaining the sturdiness of the bench? I'm also going to have smaller planks on top but 6 of them so would that still work somehow with those legs? I tried the box joint benches but they just don't look right for a Tennis Court.
I don't think that it would scale that wide using only 2x4's. It might work with 4x4's.
IMHO, without glue it will not stand the test of time; all these screws are going to slacken and the bench will get wobbly.
+serban popescu My goal for any outdoor furniture is for it to last 5 years. It is a little over 3 years old now and is still sturdy as can be. I will be sanding and refinishing it this summer and I will be tightening all the screws as a matter of course. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for replying. My own experience with simple redwood outdoor furniture (mostly stools and a low bench) has been that the first two, which were assembled with deck screws, started to have play after a few years and retightening the screws worked only so much, while the other stools and the bench have remained rock solid after 6-7 years.
P.S. I do love wood glue (unless it's for a take-down object)!

We have big people in my family, and the bench we had for a decade only had a 2x4 in each corner, coming down at an angle, crossed to make exes on the ends......never felt any flex.....

I have a deep hatred for store bought pocket hole jigs, but I do like the way this bench looks. Does it still woble, or was it doing that because of how it was sitting on your work bench?

Dirt Road Woodworks Thank you. My work bench isn't quit level for the longer projects like this. Once it sat outside for a week everything settled and it is nice and solid now.

FunWithWoodWorking. Hey man based on my observations while I watched this video over and over again you didn't mention the size of cuts of each piece that you put together you only mentioned the overall dimensions of the bench, however! I did some little bit of Math and some lucky guess...I hope I'm right though!
These are the Cuts that you did:
For the Frame Bench
-Redwood 2x6 5ft length (2pc)
-Redwood 2x4 5ft length (2pc)
-Redwood or Regular Construction 2x4's @ 15inch wide (2pc)
For the bench legs:
-regular 2x4 @ 17-3/4 inch (6pc)
-regular 2x4 @ 6-3/4inch (12pc)
-regular 2x4 @ 11inch (3pc)
Am I right on the cuts that you did? Or am I missing something? Or totally wrong??

@@FunWithWoodworking thanks man, but sorry I can't see it and double check the cut list, I'm probably wrong with the length, I forgotten that the overall length was 5ft and there's a 2 2x4's on the side of the 2x6 that if joined together it will be all 5ft in length.

I like your design. Is the bench very heavy? Do the pocket screws that you use need to be for outdoors?
It's a little heavy, but I can still move it by myself. I used the specially coated blue pocket screws made for outdoor use.

Nice plans! I've selected this as the template to build my benches. One question: is it laterally stable? The last bench I built stood like yours (3 sets of legs) but wasn't nearly stable enough. I put 2 stabilizing 2x4's underneath for lateral support.
p.s. Your drill bit isn't sharp enough. :-) For a corded drill, that bit should be creating those pocket holes like butter, through both the redwood and the SPF.
Anthony D I haven't had any problems but it sits under my patio cover next to a wall so it doesn't get moved much.

Great video. Can I make the same design but without the 'frame' as shown in 2:35?
You should be able to. You'll just have to screw the legs directly into the bottom of the seat slats instead of into the frame.

What is the name of the machine used near the two minute mark? Is there a place I can find a step by step direction guide to building a bench like this one?
Abdelrahman Tageldin It is a Kreg pocket hole jig. The one that I have runs about $99 at Lowes and Home Depot. If you check the about section for my channel there is a link to my website. TH-cam doesn't allow you to add URL's in the comments section. Click on the downloads page and scroll down. There is a free PDF that has all the dimensions for the bench. That and the video should get you through it. If not then let me know and I can write something up for you for $10.

Go to the Lowes website and do a search for "Hitachi laser mitre saw 10" and I have the $169 one. You can see all the specs there.

As of this minute I believe that I am at 8. 2 of them are the old blue ones and nobody wants them without a battery and 1 is a corded drill that I only break out a couple of times a year.

What about wood movement on the ends
It has not been an issue so far. The boards are not that wide and they have room to move towards the middle.

So did you end up using Polyurethane? I notice it darkens my redwood projects a bit more than my liking, the finished pic on your site looks great
