    Dropping into the slot is turning your lessons from unique and relatively easy to understand to the same old same old difficult way we’ve been watching for years, Tom you’re spoiling the thing that attracted me to you in the first place. Please keep it simple as possible. I’ve been enjoying it up to now from Dave in Perth Australia.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey David, I think you're confusing the old way of "dropping the club into the slot" which requires the golfer to physically lower the arms and hands by moving them downward - thay requires a lot of timing.
      In this swing system, the "dropping" motion happens automatically if you begin the downswing with the hips moving toward the target.
      Also, the more inward you take the club, the less you have to drop it in the downswing. Rahm has his arms a little bit above his shoulders, so he has to drop the club more than a golfer with the lead arm on or slightly under the shoulder line.
      So, it's still the same simple information, the club always has to move down first and to the ball - it's just a matter of HOW you do that. I prefer the simplest way, which is built into the hips moving laterally first in the downswing.

  • @josephwalker138
    @josephwalker138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This was a great reinforcement episode. I was struggling with starting the downswing, experiencing inconsistency, and crazy hooks. Presenting the Rahm option of dropping in to the slot, or your side bend with hip extension, was great.
    Thank you for taking the time today...

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Joseph! I think the more we can break these motions down to bite-sized chunks, the simpler the golf swing motion will become. The swing is as simple as letting the big muscles control it.

    HI Tom, Thanks so much for your lessons on the golf swing. You have a great and fun way of simplifying the technique. I have been playing with lower back and hip pain when playing golf for 15 years and since I have changed to your swing I have had no pain what so ever. It is truly life changing for me. While making a change is not easy after I have developed bad technique over the years I have instantly had better results with my ball striking. I have only been doing this for about 2 months so I look forward to continuing with the change. Thanks again buddy. Clint from Canada

    Tom,
    Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! This was a fantastic video, especially w/the analysis of Ram's swing. I believe 2 parts of this video truly stuck with me. The sticking of the (R) arm to the side and the follow through or quiet hands.
    I played Sunday and one of my drives started out already hooking to the left (I am R. Handed) and a out 100 yes. out, took a left turn to Albuquerque. I believe I rushed the swing, threw my hips out early and then rotated the hands over (My analysis of course). I've discovered on drives that I at times get lazy and start using too much wrist action, which leads to poorer drives.
    Again, thank you!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you enjoyed Rahmbo the video, Steven! Those are definitely two key takeaways from his swing that we can all benefit from.

    Gracias! I have been experimenting with the Rahm (DJ, Trevino etc...) wrist hinge recently (as seen in other Rahm videos), but you're the first to point out the hands/club beginning the down-swing by briefly dropping straight down. Maybe properly rejoining the shaft plain isn't rocket science after all? I do not have a hip bump though, I turn my hips -- as it seems that he does too, so I will give it a shot! Thanks again!

    This is great Tom. No 2, your hands dropping is so underrated and we need to talk more about it😊. Headed to the Trackman range later today to work on all three tips. I’ve noticed you always have your feet pointing in each direction. Can you talk more about that please.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoyed it, Henrik!
      Weight forward 55/45 (up to 60/40 with the longer clubs), both feet flared out approximately 20 degrees, and the knees similarly angled outward are prescribed setup features of the Stack & Tilt swing system I teach. This orientation provides for an unrestricted 45 degrees of tilted hip turn, at which point we only need to add another 45 degrees of shoulder turn for a full 90 degrees. The result is a centered, stress-free, flowing motion back and through, and a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing.
      Also, no matter which club you are swinging, in the backswing the lead knee always works down in the direction established at address - in other words, slightly flared outward towards the target. This keeps the weight forward and the swing center intact. Any inward movement of the lead knee will shift the center and low point backwards. This can lead to inconsistency and may also cause some discomfort to the knee.
      Have fun out there!

    These videos have been a great help, I have quit watching all of the other tutorials on TH-cam. Yesterday, I accidentally got my first birdie using Tom's advice and I'm a $%@tty player .

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jay - Congrats on that first birdie!! (Although if you're following my advice how could it possibly have been an "accident" LOL?!!!)
      Something tells me that your $%@tty playing days are behind you and that you are now on the path towards becoming really g@@d. Let me offer a couple of very inexpensive suggestions to help accelerate that process for you:
      1) Please consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only learning system for the full swing (including the finer points and feels) and much more. This really simplifies the process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm constantly adding new content. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga.
      2) Consider purchasing a copy of the Stack & Tilt book by Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. It will serve you well as a great reference guide for the swing and will be highly supportive of what you will learn in my online school.
      Thanks for your comment, and I wish you all the best in your golfing pursuits!

    11:50 ish - is a bit confusing, seems contradictory at first... let me 'splain. We can still keep the club face quiet and square longer while unhinging/downcocking/releasing wrist angle, correct? It's the rolling part of the release that creates club face rotation through impact and more reliance on timing? I mean we have to unhinge to get to the ball. Over time we can unhinge more aggressively, without rolling, to increase club head speed (given all other good mechanics remain solid)?? For me, when I try to release more aggressively, other mechanics fall apart (probably right arm straightens out to soon). I'm probably anxious about the timing of that increased late release velocity and so I start doing it to early and then the swing just falls apart.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We simply don't try to roll the club. Period. It's not a power move. Don't allow yourself to be stuck in the teachings and terminology of failed conventional instruction that has left far too many amateurs stuck in the vast abyss of inconsistency and frustration. The forearms do "trade places" from pre- to post-impact, but that occurs naturally and is not a timed rolling of the hands. The unhinging will occur if you let it, but more important is first getting a proper feel for flip-free impact. This lesson and drill can help with that: th-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/w-d-xo.html
      And here's one on the unhinging move when you're ready: th-cam.com/video/zw7Rzstq4gY/w-d-xo.html
      Or just join the online school and learn this swing the proper way, step-by-step.... saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga.

    Was taught by last 2 instructors including 1 which was a "instructor of the year" in N. Cal to roll the hands. "That's how you create a draw" by hitting from the inside and by rolling the hands that imparts draw spin. It works once in a while but 98% of the time I either slice, hook or pull slice. Don't have that quality of hand/ eye control. Gonna work on Tom's method

    • @chadspencer9302
      @chadspencer9302 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom is right!!! Stack and Tilt is easier. If you commit to what Tom is teaching you will definitely improve.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Golf Fan - What you refer to as "Tom's method" is really just my way of conveying in layman's terms the physics and geometry of the swing as explained in The Golfing Machine by Homer Kelley and further refined in The Stack and Tilt Swing by Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. Anyway, now that we've clarified that, welcome to the most effective way to consistently achieve crispy clean compressed contact! And you are absolutely correct: timing the rolling of your hands at that split second of impact is definitely not the means to consistency, and it does nothing for your power either!
      If you haven't already done so, please watch my episode from this past Saturday as it gets deeper into the hand action - or actually the lack thereof - through impact: th-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/w-d-xo.html

      Bill - The simple answer is like the old joke: Patient: "Doctor, my arm hurts when I do this." Doctor: "Then don't do that..."
      I know it's not quite that easy, but the best thing to do - especially since it seems like you're doing well with the full shots - is to take that half- and three-quarter wedge to the range and work through it. If you are opening the face on the way back, then make sure you maintain your arm connections and do not allow your hands/wrists/forearms to roll. Begin with some chips and pitches, and then graduate up from there. This impact video may help once you've stopped fanning the face open: th-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/w-d-xo.html (If you do this while still rolling it open on the backswing, the feedback will be instant as the ball will definitely shoot off the the right!)

      Hey Brian - Moe Norman's swing - as well as the man himself - was chock full of nuances and idiosyncrasies, but his ball striking was absolutely legendary. I may make mention of him and some of his swing positions from time to time, but I'm not sure that a full analysis of his swing would serve my students and subscribers well as the contrasts are bound to cause some confusion.
      Having said that, just a quick TH-cam search brought up numerous videos of Moe talking about the swing in his own words as well as several other analyses of him.

      I have been doing Moe Norman swing through Todd Graves golf Academy for years w good success but not fully achieving what I want as a low handicapper. I still keep my arms straight level w my mid back line at set up as this makes sense to me because when we all get back to impact our arms are straightening. It’s a simpler swing but I also like what Tom is saying and have found success so I’m hybridizing my swing to c what works best for me. After 22 yrs. I’m tired of trying and need to stay w something. Good luck.

    Thanks for the instruction and I’m doing this with limited success but I’ve always struggled with the hips starting first as I tend to be in a hurry and not sure how to let myself slow down and yet hit without decel. Thoughts??

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Icare - It depends on what your hips are doing in terms of lateral slide vs. rotation and what the sequence is. Too much rotation or not enough lateral shift oftentimes leads to an over the top downswing move. If the opposite is the case, then the path can be too much in to out causing pushes and blocks.
      My best suggestions for you:
      1) If you'd really like to get on the fast track towards owning this swing, please consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only learning system for the full swing (including the finer points and feels) and much more. The school's intuitive course curriculum greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm constantly adding new content. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga.
      2) For a very useful supplement to the online school, consider purchasing a copy of the Stack & Tilt book by Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. It will serve you well as a textbook reference guide for the swing and will be highly supportive of what you will learn in my online school.
      Thanks!

    Is this also true with chipping and pitching not to flip the wrist and keep club face open longer?

      Yes, but the SagutoGolf online school as that is where you're going to find all my short game instruction. I'm pretty certain I've mentioned the school to you in a previous comment so I'll spare you the details and just provide the link in case you wish to check it out: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga.

    Do you think the lowering of the hands in Rahm's downswing is the same as Sam Snead's "pulling down on a rope" analogy?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve - Rahmbo's hands certainly do drop first at the start of the downswing, *BUT* - and this is very important and consistent with the swing I teach - the dropping of his hands is initiated by the lower body shifting back towards the target. In fact, if you look at Sam Snead's swing face on you'll notice that he does the same thing! His "feel" was that of pulling the hands straight down, but his reality was the pushing of his hips to the left that caused his hands to drop!
      Thanks for your question!

    Did you build your own golf net? Can you give us basic instructions. It will save me a fortune on range balls.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul - Yes - It is a DIY job!
      We used this video as a starting point: th-cam.com/video/-p11qs4E2T0/w-d-xo.html. We then redeployed an existing net that we had and made some other minor PVC support structure modifications to suit our needs.
      Hope that helps!

    So after working on your lesson I have improved with my driver and 3 wood but my irons are still trash.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      William - Have you checked your ball position with those "trashy" irons? As a general rule we use two balls inside the front heel as a starting point for mid-irons. Driver and fairways woods are slightly forward of that; shorter irons slightly behind. If you've gotten the swing down well enough to where you have a consistent low point, then your fix could be that simple.
      Having said that, my best suggestion if you'd really like to own this swing through your entire bag is that you consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only learning system for the full swing and much more. @@SagutoGolf I have been playing with ball position but i am blading or topping the ball like crazy with my 3 through 7 irons. With 8 through wedges if I make good contact I am sending them 50 yards into the air. Basically my PW and 9 iron go about 100 yds but high.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      CoolMan - Whoa there! Saying that I've become like all the other instructors is perhaps the ultimate insult to me LOL!!!
      Seriously - please rewatch the video, especially starting around the 8:00 mark. I said earlier in that segment that some players and teachers talk about feeling the hands drop. Conversely, I teach that you initiate the downswing with the lateral hip move towards the target. This naturally brings the hands into the perfect position without having to consciously do anything with the hands!
      Thanks,
      Tom
