I'm 31 and I remembered desperately wishing there was a Wicked movie when I was a teenager. If this movie is bad I'm gonna be so upset. I'm already miffed that they made it a two parter. And I really don't like Ariana Grande but at least she has the vocals for the role.
The biggest reason I’m so happy there’s 2 movies, is just how much story feels rushed or just never fully addressed in the musical. I’m so excited to see how they fill in all the gaps, even if there’s a possibility it doesn’t all work, but who knows! 🙏💚
Me too! I know some people are worried that the second act won’t hold up, but I really don’t mind (in all honesty the first act is stronger anyways). I have adored everything related to the Wizard of Oz since before I can even remember. I have been waiting for this movie for YEARS!
I worked the theater and for most songs they mark ,lights up , escorting for intermission. The feeling involuntarily comes when I hear these songs. Good times ,good times.
I'm actually very happy that none of the songs are being cut, including something bad, which I know is not a crowd favorite. However, it is an important song to the plot. And we're even getting two new songs, which makes me nervous but excited to see how they fit into the narrative. I'm excited there incorporating certain aspects of the book into the films. And we're going to see some of Elphaba's childhood. I want to see her relationship with Madame Morrible explored more. Maybe Elphaba could look at Madame Morrible As a motherly figures about way when she betrays her Is it hits harder emotionally. I don't know if there's going to be a post credit scene but if there is I would like to see the Aftermath of defying grafty Is where glenda's taken to the wizard and is given a choice to stand with Elphaba or be exiled or even have her family threatened. I feel like it would make her more sympathetic by the time we get to part two.
How so? Her portrayal of The Wicked Witch was so iconic that for decades afterwards children were terrified of her. She made such an impression that she had to go on the Muppets a good 30-40 years after the Wizard of Oz was released in costume to get children to understand she wasn't actually a wicked witch....please tell me how anyone could possibly underrate a performance like THAT?
It's such a minor thing, but one thing that always stuck with me in the book is that it logically explains why Elphaba doesn't like getting wet! It does actually hurt her and she needs to use oils and the likes to clean herself. I would love to atleast see this touched on so it makes the ending more poignant to Glinda when she hears about what happened to Elphaba when Dorothy got her. Like I said, minor thing, but I missed that in the musical.
I would say this is definitely NOT a minor thing! I also found that to be one of the most fascinating aspects of the book and was extremely disappointed when it was not addressed nor used in the stage musical. I hope that it resurfaces in the film version. The ending in the stage musical (as she "recovers" from the "melting") was kind of ridiculous. The book's ending was much more thought-provoking and cathartic. Here's hoping!
They can’t capture the same magic of Defying Gravity on stage, the act of actually seeing someone “fly” right there before your eyes will never be the same as seeing it on a screen
While most will get chills when they hear the opening keys to Wicked, which is to me very iconic, everyone and their mother will be waiting for the end song Defying Gravity. Given Mr. Chu's, the director, awesome directing of Dance and Musical numbers (Step it up 2/3-D and In the Heights) it will defiantly be a show stopper.
Thankfully, Chu and Schwartz have confirmed that no songs will be cut or trimmed. They will either be kept in its official entirety or even extended at some points. Schwartz said that he's also adding at least two new songs for Part Two to help with extending the plot and adding depth for specific characters.

I was blessed enough to see the show in NYC with the original cast. 12 times later, I still fall in love with this show every time I see it. Im looking forward to the movie. But nothing can replace seeing the show in person.
I saw it in San Francisco with 99% of the Broadway cast when it had its world premiere and have been a huge fan ever since. (The main cast change was the Wizard. Robert Morse played the role in San Francisco, and let’s just say recasting it with Joel Grey was a very wise choice). I also saw it several times when it came back on tour
I absolutely agree that Elphaba should learn that the Wizard is her biological father. It seems like good fodder for a song. The other thing I really want the film to clarify is the timeline. The stage show is very fuzzy about how much time passes between acts and I would like to know. Is it days or months or years? Oh my! Which also kind of leads to...how old are these characters? I want to know.
I love that Wicked is really one of the only musicals that you CANNOT take out a single song (even the ones that nobody likes, sorry) without losing something. The purpose of this movie is solely to expand on the story (hopefully meaningfully) and show us its world. I pray that everyone making it understands that.
I really hope it’s good, It’s my favourite musical ever! I really thought that I was going to die before it came out because it was taking so long haha
I would LOVE if they kinda did an overlap of introducing Elphaba's son Liir Thropp in the end of Part II. Maybe like, to show that her legacy is still carried on after her as it was in "Son of a Witch".
I went to a book signing/discussion with Gregory Maguire when the third book in the series was released. Someone asked him how he felt about the musical making so many changes from his book. His answer: he made huge changes from the original book and the 1939 movie, so he would be a hypocrite if he was upset with changes from his book. And he said he was a fan of the musical.
@@manuelorozco7760when they released one of the anniversary cd’s (can’t remember if it was the 5 or 10 year anniversary) they added several of the cut songs, or alternate versions of existing songs, that was one of them
I admit movie musicals have been hit and miss in recent years. But as someone whose passion for musicals began with Wicked, they can’t mess up. I already love the new sets and costumes. I was in musical heaven when Jon M Chu was announced to direct. And Defying Gravity is the first in a long line of amazing Act One finales I had the absolute pleasure to see live and in person. I have faith in Cynthia Erivo to make us all proud! From a retrospective though, I’m a bigger fan of the songs in Act One than Act Two!
if they bring in stuff from the book, I desperately hope they find a way to include Liir in part 2. He’s my favourite character from the books and deserves wider recognition.
The issue with expanding the movie to include more elements from the book, is that the show is campy for the most part and the songs are written to fit that world. Whilst the underlying themes in the show are serious, the show was specifically created to be a musical comedy that would appeal to a large demographic. Tourists can watch that show, have a nice time and leave without even grasping the message. That's a smart choice in terms of making a show commercial, yes. But to now try to lean into the heavier underbelly of the original source material, will be an interesting challenge to make work. Some of the lyrics alone are hardly high art and whilst they work beautifully in a theatrical setting, the darker elements of the novel will potentially make for odd bedfellows. The trailers look absolutely stunning. So here's hoping
That first time seeing Defying Gravity live (with Shoshana Bean in the role of Elphaba I’ll have you know) was something special. I’ll never forget that as long as I live. That was a MASTERPIECE of Broadway and of theater. I am looking forward to seeing how they add to it for the movie(s).
I actually think the Wicked Witch of the East narrative should be in the "could be in the improved upon" column. I could have done with more insight into Nessa's character that shows the tendencies that lead to her becoming the tyrant we see at the end and I would also love "Wicked Witch of the East" to be its own number rather than just a sung line in an otherwise dialogue heavy scene. I would like some more exposition about the connotations of "witch" as a term in Oz , given Nessa is only seen to perform magic once and is dubbed a Witch because of her regime, and because Glinda's role as the Good Witch is largely a figure head prop whose prowess with magic isn't emphasized as as it is with Elphaba, a wicked witch, (though I wonder if they will revert to the book's version where Glinda enchants Nessa's shoes rather than Elphaba). It seems the term "witch" carries a lot of political weight and yet is morally neutral because Good and Wicked witches exist. Linked to this I would be interested in whether Madame Morrible identifies as a witch. She is clearly a sorceress and hugely influential politically and yet I don't recall her ever being called a witch.
I’m happy to confirm that: 1. None of the songs from the stage musical are going to be cut. Stephen Schwartz confirmed that and also went on to say that he will be adding new & additional lyrics to the existing songs 2. The two new songs written for the film adaptation will be featured in Wicked: Part Two (2025) 3. Both Jon Chu AND Gregory Maguire, the author of “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, has confirmed that elements, storylines and characters that didn’t make the cut for the musical will be incorporated into the films I’m very very excited for this two-part movie and I will be seeing it opening day!
1) I just hope the musical sequences won’t be too short for the sake of timing like the new Color Purple 2) I’m surprised the new songs will only be for Part Two.
Do top 10 times when Broadway musical was overshadowed by a other musical. In 1975, Chicago came out, but so did a Chorus Line. 1984 had Sunday in the Park with George, but also LA Cage Aux Faules. 1988 had Into the Woods but also Phantom. 2003 had Wicked but Avenue Q swept the Tonys.
My understanding is giving room to ALL of the original songs from the show was a major factor in breaking it into two movies, Otherwise, trying to cram that entire show into one would mean some of the songs would have tobe cut, especially if they want to also introduce any new songs (to be eligible fro the Best Song Oscar).
@msmojo and others how do you think the scene for defying gravity will take place? I keep seeing Elphaba and Glinda at the door to the Emerald Palace with guards and others trying to get through the door to catch the 'Wicked Witch'. And as the song progress and Glinda declines to join Elphaba, the city gets darker and darker and as Elphaba performs her Levitation spell, her black dress sprouts and grows (like Chistery's wing grew when she performed the spell on them). As she finishes her spell and starts flying her broom glows with a tint of green and the night sky turns into an Aurora borealis and as she sings her final words directly to Glinda, there is a glimmer of bright light to the West and as she leaves OZ the Glimmer gets bigger and bigger and the screen transition from the night sky to this bright glimmer that takes over the full screen and ENDS! Let Elphaba have the final word and scene!
To be honest, I feel like a great way to stay true to the musical, but also take it to the medium of cinema is that they could maybe show the shadow from Elphabas melting without the curtain like from behind glindas back
"Is one a crusader, or ruthless invader? It's all in which label is able to persist. There are precious few at ease With moral ambiguities, So we act as though they don't exist." The lyrics are as brilliant as the music and often go underappreciated with Stephen Schwartz.
This is the first time I notice l that Dorothy is wearing silver slippers, so that detail is taken from the original book, or the movie’s ruby slippers
Disney deciding to releases Moana 2 on the same day was a mistake... Wicked is a major blockbuster musical and celebrating it's 21st anniversary on Broadway this year. There's also the fact that Moana 2 was a Disney+ animated series edited together into a movie, I just don't see how it will do well against Wicked... I also don't think Zootopia 2 will do well against Wicked: Part 2 next year.
I’m scared for both of them to compete. Although I’m a bigger fan of Moana than Zootopia. I just hope they all are good movies and make money. This is a pretty interesting situation.
@@manuelorozco7760 It definitely is.. Wicked: Part 1 originally moved from December to November so it wouldn't have to go against Avatar 3 but then the strike happened and Avatar 3 got pushed back to next year and now Wicked: Part 1 is going up against Moana 2... I guess we will just have to wait and see how this turns out.
@@lolameyer And since I haven’t been too happy with Disney lately in terms of the film side of things, I sure hope they know what they’re doing. When I thought of a Mouse House animated feature competing with Wicked Part 1, I was picturing more of a Big Hero 6 sequel.
I do disagree with messing around with a stage show. If done with skill, altering the order of songs and ever who's singing them, can work. Spielberg's "West Side Story" is proof of that. That is a movie that completely gutted the dialogue and messed around with the songs but it works and makes the movie not just a filmed version of the stage play (or even a remake of the original movie) but it's own creation and one that can stand toe-to-toe with the Best Picture winner. Likewise, "Little Shop of Horrors" had a COMPLETELY different ending than the stage show (mostly because they original filmed ending did not play well with movie audiences) and brought in a wonderful ending with a song that was justifiably nominated for "Best Original Song". Thu, with 2 movies, they definitely have room to do that. Hopefully, the songs they will add will be on par with the stage version. However it is, expect this to open BIG at Thanksgiving time.
One thing I don't like from the trailer is this moment: Glinda: *Gasps* You're green! Elphaba: ...I am. I want the line Elphaba has in the musical: "What? Oh, do I have something in my teeth? Alright, FINE! Might as well get this over with. NO, I'm not seasick. Yes, I've always been this green. No, I did not eat grass as a child!"
I was expecting them to cut that, it's too theatrical to work on screen. And to be honest, it falls short of the movie version. I'm way more invested in a less explosive and more confident Elphaba.
I figured they were going to have to bring in more of the book if they were expanding it to two shows. It's just ... I don't want to go watch the book, I want to watch the musical. I would rather them keep to the musical, even though it's not cannon so that it's one show. I do plan on going, the sets look beautiful and it's cast so well but I don't see it ever being my favourite. Not like it's going to be "Cats" or "Les Mis" bad but I don't want a musical book.
I really enjoy Movie Musicals and I am excited to see what new music they bring to the movie. Also I do agree that they should leave the score as is and not tinker with the pace of the songs. That is one thing that drives me bonkers, yes I am talking to you MR. ROB MARSHAL, butchering the pace and RYHTHEM of 'All that Jazz' and dropping the 2nd Act opening number, CAN YOU IMAGINE, I MEAN DO YOU BELIEVE IT!
@@manuelorozco7760 I liked his Annie but my major problem was the change of Hannigan instead of Lily posing as Annie's mother. Biggest fail of that version.
Best video about Wicked I have seen thus far: thank you MsMojo! 🧡The original musical is a little under 3 hours; with a 2 part movie (each at least two hours) we should get more story. It would make since the storylines should include the wizard seducing Melena Thropp, the strained relationship of the "father" and sister rivalry between NessaRose and Elphaba and WHY the shoes are so important, and the best part that should remain is the double entendre references to the original Wizard of Oz movie. There is a franchise here and if "they" (the production team) are smart they will enhance the Fieryo storyline so Son of a Witch can be the sequel. Troye Sivan would be perfect but may be too old by the time filming begins. Both Idina and Kristen should have cameos. ❤❤🧡🧡💛💛💚💚💙💙💜💜🖤🖤🤍🤍
I’m going to see the movie in spite of the gross miscasting of Ariana Grande. Everyone else is perfect! I’ve already seen the trailers which confirmed my suspicions that AG’s acting would be all soft baby talk voice and no depth. Hopefully her prior Broadway singing training will triumph over her mouth full of cotton & marbles singing through her nose pop voice.
The only thing i disliked from John M. Chu's in the heights adaptation is the treatment to Abuela, in the stage show she's like the coreo of the community meanwhile in the movie she lost almost all her depth so the Alabanza scene doesn't feel that much as in the sow and also being followed by Carnaval del barrio doesn't help to the feeling
@@manuelorozco7760 i didn't like it. It's like "Guys Abuela died, anyway let's celebrate". I also can't understand Camila being cut, in various interviews Quiara said that she wants to focus just in two matriarchs: Abuela Claudia and Daniela, but Abuela Claudia's song and history where cut, there's no part between Abuela and Usnavi talking about the lotery in Blackout, also "Hundred of stories" was cutted. Daniela's role in the movie was also cut. I think the main problem was time run of the movie
I’ll forever be disappointed by them choosing Ariana grande for Glinda, she just doesn’t suit her at all.. As an actress or singer.. And god.. those bleached eyebrows were an awful choice 💀
I thought the same thing having not liked her acting previously. (She can sing, but Hairspray Live was awful on so many levels.) But she is a true fan of this show. She's been obsessed since she was a child. If there is any role she's going to be able to pull off, it's this one. And the more and more I see of her... well I now think she's going to surprise all the skeptics.
There's nothing behind her eyes. She might have gotten away with it on stage, but oh man, the trailer makes it very clear she's doing a surface level imitation of Chenowith playing Glinda. I hope the voice over asking "Are people born wicked" is not the take they go with because I think she's only listening to her tone and not thinking about what she's saying.
There's actually not a lot of CGI. They built all the sets and planted 9 million tulips. The only CGI is Glinda's bubble, Dr. Dillamond, Brrr (The Cowardly Lion), and the flying monkey's.
Critics mostly rolled their eyes at this musical. I like some of the songs, but the story is *so* cheesy. I get it, though. There’s no way to make a musical out of the novel without major plot changes.
My family and I saw this show in London a good few years back and we were not that impressed with it at all, One good song out of it all really doesn’t make a show does it
I guess it just wasn't for you. Doesn't make it a bad musical. I personally am not a fan of musicals like Grease or Cats, but plenty of other people think they're great.
Everyone has the right to their opinion, but if part of your reasoning is because she’s black, other black actresses have played Elphaba. Plus, it’s not like she was forced into it. Much like Ari, Cythina wanted this role!
@@wolfhunterplays3954 Racist much? Or are you just virtue signaling. In addition I''m not sure anyone at any level thinks anyone is forced into taking a movie role. What an idiotic comment. Equally dumb is the belief that because they wanted the role it's right for them. Are you for real? Maybe instead of jumping to conclusions and showing your own internal bias and racism you should stop jumping to conclusions. The comment said she is a terrible actress. Although an opinion no less valid than any of yours it doesn't point to her race being a factor. Perhaps you should spend less time trying to find an argument to let everyone know how morally superior you are and take some time to actually read the comment and apply some critical thinking skills before responding. You can avoid a great deal of embarrassment by doing so.

I’m so excited for the movie I hope the original Broadway cast make a cameo
I’m happy to confirm that:
1. None of the songs from the stage musical are going to be cut. Stephen Schwartz confirmed that and also went on to say that he will be adding new & additional lyrics to the existing songs
2. The two new songs written for the film adaptation will be featured in Wicked: Part Two (2025)
3. Both Jon Chu AND Gregory Maguire, the author of “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, has confirmed that elements, storylines and characters that didn’t make the cut for the musical will be incorporated into the films
I’m very very excited for this two-part movie and I will be seeing it opening day!
5:28 In the book, Elphaba learns the truth from the Clock of the Dragon Clock after Dorothy arrives in Oz.
I remember seeing wicked on west end and soon as the piano started for defying gravity everyone started clapping and cheering
They need to just give us an HD version of the stage recording like Hamilton
I would have wanted that 2 decades ago
I think it’s safe to say The Philosophy Club scene with the tiger from the original novel most definitely will and should be left out.
Cutting a few songs was why I skipped the Dear Evan Hansen movie
Happy thursday afternoon, Emily. Take care and God bless you. Greetings from Colombia to you as well.
I'm a fan of the book. I hope they film 2 endings: the broadway version and the book version. -Frank
To be honest, I feel like a great way to stay true to the musical, but also take it to the medium of cinema is that they could maybe show the shadow from Elphabas melting without the curtain like from behind glindas back
Like I understand why they use the curtain in the stage show, but I feel like it wouldn’t make sense as a movie
"Is one a crusader, or ruthless invader?
It's all in which label is able to persist.
There are precious few at ease
With moral ambiguities,
So we act as though they don't exist."
The lyrics are as brilliant as the music and often go underappreciated with Stephen Schwartz.
How much of the book was left out is what bothered me most about the show. Adding some of it back will only help.
One thing I don't like from the trailer is this moment:
Glinda: *Gasps* You're green!
Elphaba: ...I am.
I want the line Elphaba has in the musical:
"What? Oh, do I have something in my teeth? Alright, FINE! Might as well get this over with. NO, I'm not seasick. Yes, I've always been this green. No, I did not eat grass as a child!"
I was expecting them to cut that, it's too theatrical to work on screen. And to be honest, it falls short of the movie version. I'm way more invested in a less explosive and more confident Elphaba.
Or the line is in the movie, just not in the trailer
I read the book, then saw the touring play. I didn't like the changes at the end especially. I will see the movie, but I don't expect much.
If they're putting this movie out in two parts, they cannot afford to screw things up
Especially with the soundtrack. Thst needs to be left alone
Agree!
I would like to see how Glenda will vanish him in the movie because you know, madme moble can protect him
I figured they were going to have to bring in more of the book if they were expanding it to two shows.
If Jon M Chu wasn’t chosen to direct I would have wanted Rob Marshall. I was a fan of Annie and Mary Poppins Returns.
@@manuelorozco7760
I liked his Annie but my major problem was the change of Hannigan instead of Lily posing as Annie's mother. Biggest fail of that version.
@@Torrey33327 I’m glad I’m not the only one who was not crazy about that plot change!
Right? Annie is just not that stupid.🤭@@manuelorozco7760
@@manuelorozco7760Right? Annie is not that stupid!
The ending of Act 1 and that note - are EPIC! It looks like they ruined it in the movie trailer. The new actress's riff on that song is horrible :(
I’m reserving my judgement until Part One comes out
I will always be a Cats Stan. I loved the movie.
I really want to hear more about Nessarose and maybe even a new song for her before she dies…
i would have preferred a book adaptation over the musical adaptation boo i say booooo
Uh... You "hope he brings the same 'In The Heights' magic to Wicked"? You DO know In The Heights BOMBED, right?
Which actor is shown playing Fiyero at 0:10 in this video?
I think that was Norbert Leo Butz.
Ashley Parker Angel
I'll watch the movie because of the steampunk
When it comes out digitally, of course
They are idiots if they change the soundtrack

ive always disliked the wizard being elphabas father. there can be some other way to make elphabas powers out of this world.

When I saw Ariana Grande, I said nope. I hate using pop stars as actors.
I wont watch it til it’s complete period this two movie bs is not right
Wicked the book, 15 paragraphs about a dang sunrise. The musical is better.
everything
I like Alabanza better after Carnival Del Barrio as well. I also didn’t like Camilla being cut out and lack of tension between Nina and Benny
@@anteseraunpato Point taken. But it still turned out to be a good movie
@@manuelorozco7760 yeah it was a good movie. At least it wasn't like Cats
@@anteseraunpato I’m glad I didn’t see Cats or Dear Evan Hansen. Chu’s hard work he put into In The Heights is why I believe Wicked is in good hands
Great but, the wrong people are very wrong
I don't think they are keeping Elphaba being a hermaphrodite from the book.
They should fix the ableism.
This didn't need it in a 2 part money grab movie, what it did need was a Prohot Stage project like Hamilton was filmed.
Cut anything with The Wizard.
His songs are terrible and makes me want to leave the show each time I’ve seen it (over 100 times).
I’ll forever be disappointed by them choosing Ariana grande for Glinda, she just doesn’t suit her at all.. As an actress or singer..
And god.. those bleached eyebrows were an awful choice 💀
I thought the same thing when I heard about the casting.
HOWEVER, I am trying to keep an open mind.
Be bothered
@@ei5287
I am going to withhold judgement until after I see the movie.
Early!
Not interested
There aren't any memory songs in Wicked.
They are putting the movie in 2 parts?! Seriously? Ok, not seeing it.
i am so not happy with that trailer!!!!! look bad too much CGI the rift are awfull;;; and Arianna!!!!
Super disappointed that Ariana is in it. Otherwise it looks like a messy CGI nightmare
ironically it’s all practical sets minus the parts they need to extend
My family and I saw this show in London a good few years back and we were not that impressed with it at all, One good song out of it all really doesn’t make a show does it
Musicals are not for everybody
I guess it just wasn't for you. Doesn't make it a bad musical. I personally am not a fan of musicals like Grease or Cats, but plenty of other people think they're great.
“It’s been beloved by millions for years but I didn’t like it so that must mean it’s bad” 💀
Maybe you're just tasteless?
Well getting rid off Cynthia Erivo would be number 1. Terrible actress. She doesn't suit the role at all.
Respectfully disagree, but I guess we have to wait and see how it turns out
Everyone has the right to their opinion, but if part of your reasoning is because she’s black, other black actresses have played Elphaba. Plus, it’s not like she was forced into it. Much like Ari, Cythina wanted this role!
how does she not suit the role? Please explain
You misspelled Ariana
