There are, all told, forty canon Oz books (1939 saw the publication of the 33rd), there were stage plays based on other Oz books, there were three radio series based on "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," as well as two movies, one in 1910 and one in 1925, and L. Frank Baum himself produced two movies in 1914: _His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz_ and _The Patchwork Girl of Oz._ After he died, the book series continued under another author with Maud Baum's approval. There were commercial campaigns, toys, and all manner of Oziana before MGM got the film rights in 1938. Also, _Return to Oz_ isn't a sequel. And _The Wiz_ was on Broadway before it was a movie.
I'm basically obsessed with 14 inch dolls and would love it if part of the merchandising for this movie included these size dolls of Elphaba and Glenda.
I wish there was a movie form of the Broadway musical of Wicked with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth . I would think everyone would want to see that.
I remember being a young kid, reading The Wizard of Oz book, and thinking "Wow, that's a funny thing to change from the movie" when I read about Dorothy and the others being required to put on emerald sunglasses. The funny thing is, I can't remember when I learned the book was much older than the movie. I'd even forgotten about reading the book until seeing this video
Yup, it was published in December of 1900, just before the beginning of the 20th century. 🙂Not only that, but it led to a Broadway smash which premiered in Chicago in 1902. There were other stage adaptations, both of "Wizard" and other Oz books, as well as several silent movies, including two produced by L. Frank Baum himself in 1914, and at least three radio series in the 1930's.
There’s only one comparison between Wicked and the Wizard of Oz and that is , Judy Garland and the Wicked Witch of the West said this quote . There’s no place like home .
I was very skeptical of wicked being split into two movies. However I feel like it is a brilliant idea now considering how fast pace the show is it works on stage but as a film you need time to breathe. Also I heard they're adding elements of the book that never made it into the musical. I always loved the book. Although I can understand why people find it less interesting than the play. I know that the book is more political and at times can be a little boring to some readers.
Wicked is my second favorite musical of all time. First being the phantom of the opera. I just turned 14 when I heard ' defying Gravity,' for the first time... It was like this smooth, yet fiery energy pulsing through my body. This was a year or so after when the show came out, and us theater kids at the time where obsessed! I am also on the spectrum which at the time when I was younger, I wasn't properly diagnosed until I was 28. I was made fun of a lot by those who I thought would understand me, such as theater where I thought at first, I would be welcomed with open arms. I and other kids who had a disability were sadly not. Thankfully now I still do theater, and that has changed greatly for me. But the message of wicked still rings ever true now, even more so now than when I was 14. We not only have to start learning to accept those who seem different then us. But to just from my personal opinion, " to walk up to some one of a different background then yours and get to know them. we are all human when we truly take a step back from our fearing egos, and really see that someone who others are afraid of or doesn't like, really want' a friend, or to be understood for who they really are. Which is one of the messages of Wicked.
I finally saw Wicked on stage with a friend a few years back, and I absolutely loved it! Prior to that, I'd only seen bootlegs on TH-cam and listened to the music practically nonstop. I relate heavily to Elphaba because, as a Black, autistic/ADHD person, I have known my share of prejudice, and no matter how hard I tried, someone was determined to deem me wicked (pun absolutely intended); and like, Elphaba, I eventually just owned everything about who I am, realizing that someone is going to hate me no matter what, so I might as well just do me! I like to think that Elphaba, with Fiero, eventually found a community where they are safe and loved, for that is precisely what happened for me. I can't wait to see the movie this year!
My best friend loved the book. I never read it. She tried to explain it to me but I didn't care. Now that she's gone and now that I know what it's about, my heart aches. I am the "ugly one" who my friend only saw as beautiful. I was the "wicked" one who she only saw as amazing. Now that she's gone my heart aches because I want to share the movie with her. I own who I am thanks to her and probably what she saw in that book.
@@MaskedMan66 Doesn't do me much good to be welcome in the "real" version of a fictional world when my reality is closer to that of the "perverted" version.
Avenue Q employed a campaign with Tony voters that lead to its wins over Wicked. The creatives of Avenue Q wrote a new song for their Tony campaign. The song asked voters to “Vote their Heart”. It turned the tide and lead to the wins Avenue Q needed to secure a long run on Broadway. After the Avenue Q campaign, the rules were changed that prohibited campaigns of the nature Avenue Q employed.
@@MaskedMan66 Up until this point, no show actively campaigned at this level to secure a Tony. After this happened, that’s when the Tony committee placed limits on the extent a show can campaign.
Book- L. Frank Baum; to Movie- Wizard of Oz, to Movie (Return to OZ, Disney Channel), to Book- Wicked (gregory McGuire); to Musical (Wicked); to Movie...(and maybe some steps in between)...don't forget that Wicked was a book to read before it became a book to sing (and it has a sequel)
There are forty Oz books, fourteen of them by Baum, and there were many stage productions, silent movies, radio series, and other things long before the 1939 MGM musical, and there have been thousands of productions on screen, stage, and other venues ever since.
I love Idina’s amazing performance and portrayal. I want to see how Cynthia pulls off her performance, but I just don’t have the drive to see Wicked anymore all because of the scandal between Ariana and Ethan. But no one can top Margaret. She was truly iconic and a force to be reckoned with. Just a side note, Margaret was a sweetheart IRL. She understood children and devoted her life to them. She was a kindergarten teacher before she started acting and she was more of a motherly figure to Judy garland when they made Oz together than Judy’s own mother.
People say that about Miss Hamilton's relationship with Judy, but the truth is that Judy and her mum were in a very good place when that movie was being made. It was only after the movie made Judy a bone fide star that Ethel Gumm was blinded by dollar signs.
To the question on if them splitting Wicked into two parts is either a way to make sure the films live up to the original broadway version, or to rake in more cash…I say this: WHY NOT BOTH!?
@@pockylovingranger That happens to a lot of movies. Unusual, though; I think the only B'way-to-screen show that ever had a made-for-the-screen sequel was _Grease._ And that did vanish pretty fast!
I saw Wicked for the first time in London last year and I LOVED it. It was the best musical I have seen. From the production and props to the actors as well. 10/10 amazing

I've read all the books in the Wicked series...they're very good and well written. I hope they actually put a certain young man in the movie this time instead of ignoring him. (Spoiler: Elphaba's son)
The studio wanted to cut "Over The Rainbow" (!) because they felt it slowed the pace and they didn't like a big star singing in a barnyard. Thankfully. cooler heads prevailed. (Also the film lost money on its initial release because it cost so much to make)
MGM was days away from bankruptcy until another 1939 Favorite was made and the revenue generated was used to complete filming. None other than, Gone with the Wind.

It’ll be a few more years but for the 100th year I wouldn’t mind an updated version but the new one more based off the book. For example silver instead of ruby, have it included parts in the book that was left out in the film, etc
Agreed! I've been wishing for that for 57 years. The tech is there, we just need someone with knowledge of the book and the willingness to bring it to the screen. What a surprise for the "Wicked" fans to see a shriveled old woman with non-green skin and one eye!
I finally got to see wicked a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it. I am curious to see how the film version turns out and to hear the film versions of the songs.

@@Sasugoat Agreed. The worst he ever was in the books was a kidnapper. He gave the rightful heir, Princess Ozma, to the old woman Mombi to raise away from the palace. Mombi turned the baby into a boy and made "him" work for her. Eventually Ozma was restored, both to her true form and to the throne of Oz.
Okay. I don't want to make any pre-screening judgements but there are definitely some things I would've done differently, like I would've made it all one movie with an intermission for theatrical release only. I think Cynthia Erivo is super talented, but I don't know if she's the right one for Elphaba. I think she should've done "The Color Purple" instead of Fantasia, and I know Idina Menzel is 52 but I still would've had her as Elphaba with makeup and visual effects de-aging her like Sigourney Weaver in "Avatar: The Way of Water". I feel the same way about Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey and Michelle Yeoh, I would've done Amanda Seyfried as Glinda, Aaron Tveit as Fiyero and Meryl Streep as Madame Morrible. I also would've included Kristen Chenoweth and Joel Grey in the cast. Everyone can disagree but be respectful to me please, I'm just stating my opinion.
I’m gonna go with the original book by L Frank Baum with all the details that should be put in future Wizard of Oz or Wicked remakes; simply like the Silver Slippers, the Wicked Witch having a magical crystal eyeball hidden underneath an eyepatch, or even more characters like the field mice, gnomes, or Kalidahs
Just so you know those are 2 different books by 2 different authors. Wicked was written many decades later after Baum’s books by Greg Maguire and his book was telling the story from the wicked witch’s perspective. Thus how it’s so different from the original movie.
@@mythicsagefire It's even more different from the original book, in which the Wicked Witches were not related, and the Wicked Witch of the West wasn't green, had just the one eye, carried an umbrella. and traveled by chariot.

@@AshParth560 Because the real Oz books are original creations, not parodies. L. Frank Baum and his successors created their own characters and situations, and didn't crib off anyone else.
@@AshParth560 There aren't any spin-offs. The closest there is would be two books that Ruth Plumly Thompson (the second Oz author) wrote which were published by the International Wizard of Oz Fan Club.
@@johnmarkfrederick8245 The Wicked Witch of the West was no hero; she was a straight-up villain. "Elphaba" is at best an antihero. She's really a coward and a wimp.
I cannot wait until the Wicked movies. The Wizard of Oz is one of my all time favourite movies. It’s a cinematic masterpiece that has aged like fine wine.
Maguire's love story between Elphaba and Fiero (Who in the books is BLUE) is right up there with Rhett & Scarlet, Romeo & Juliet, Tristan & Isolde. The graphic sex scene in the book actually made me cry. Not thrilled with all the casting choices. It's difficult to fit a 3 hour musical into an hour forty five minute movie, so I understand the splitting into two parts; but, a year in-between is a bit long. The wizard of OZ is a completely different story than Wicked. The political references and the true evil of Madam M are staged straight out of DC itself. It's going to be good, but HOW good?
There was a russian book adaption by Alexander Melentjewitsch Wolkow (the first book beeing in big parts practicaly a copy of "The Wizard of Oz", while the following 5 created its own stories) which was very popular in the Soviet Union and especially in Eastern Germany.
That's one I've meant to have a look at, but haven't got round to yet. From what I've read and seen, the tile character seems less to me than Nick Chopper and more like Captain Fyter.
Could the reason for the lack of diversity casting with Elphaba be due to the makeup? I know it took some time to find the right green tone for Gamora in the Guardian’s franchise.
I've been waiting a long time for a Wicked movie, but I'm extremely disappointed that they are making it two parts. Feels like a shameless cash grab to me. I won't watch until part 2 is out.
As far as plot structure, it definitely is. That's because Charlie Smalls, the DJ who created i, didn't just want to do a retread of the MGM movie, as had become the fashion by then,
Yes; the tale is told that the higher-ups at MGM thought it was beneath the dignity of one of their performers to sing in a farmyard. Another is that they thought it slowed the film down. Producer Mervyn LeRoy, the visionary who cast the relatively unknown Judy Garland in the lead, insisted the song stay in, and of course, he was right.
Why is it a tale that can be told live on stage in 3 hours takes two movies, probably close to 3 hours each, to tell the same story, separated by a year long intermission? Part 1 had better be great. Tom Cruise found that his latest Mission Impossible two-parter's part one didn't ring all the bells and whistles, although I enjoyed it and have included it in my permanent collection with the others. Do we even know when we get part 2? Harry Potter's finale was a different story. I saw Wicked when it first opened on Broadway and I'll surely see the movie, I'm just wondering.
What about the Oz the Great and Powerful movie? That has another version of how the wicked witch becomes wicked. I love the musical, I’ve seen it twice. Growing up every year the wizard of oz was on tv and I’d watch with my gram who got to see the original release. It was totally a family bonding movie. I’m excited for the movie though.
I liked OtGaP better than I expected to. A revelation was Joey King as the China Girl. She was only 13 at the time, but delivered a full performance just with her voice.
Well, I do have a soft spot to the wicked witch of the west I felt bad that her sister Nessarose thropp was killed by the hands of Dorothy gale & on top of that, she will always be my wicked witch someone who I could look up to & she helped shape my childhood also she kept me on my toes that is Elphaba Thropp that I do know & love as my mother figure. At least I’m very thankful that she helped me too figure out how to use magic carefully, but it ain’t strong enough to last very long. I’ve only used my sensing ability, but I still need to learn how to control it with my subconsciousness.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy has 3 (count 'em) 3 parts. How long was the wait between each part appearing in theaters? The movie is based on the book as well as the stage production. Having it take place in two parts is a great idea.
I do think it's important to understand diversity without it being an obstacle for people, but can't it be that the only reason there was only one black actress so far to play Elphaba is that when it came down to casting calls the best actresses and singers based purely by skill? Maybe simply they found better actresses and that had nothing to do with them being white, I don't know I'm not trying to protect the team, I don't even know them LOL maybe they're a**holes in real life, but if we look over the diversity thing, maybe it's simply a matter of how good an actress is (?) Idk, of course I think a great actress for Elphie could be of any nationality without any issue at all

Which PotO? There are quite a number of them.
I’m a huge Wicked fan and I can’t wait for the movie
You would be welcome in the real Oz, as opposed to the perverted version of it that Maguire cooked up.
@@MaskedMan66 Doesn't do me much good to be welcome in the "real" version of a fictional world when my reality is closer to that of the "perverted" version.

Wicked losing Best Musical will always be a huge robbery
While Ave Q has been gone with wind, Wicked is still going strong. Time tells….
You can't be robbed of what was never yours.
@@mariofrias2227 You'd think it would have been illegal to begin with.
Sequels, there are 4 books in a series now called The Wicked Years.
Yes! I came here to say this too. So many people overlook the book Wicked which everything else of the same name is based on.
I think there are a few books in that series now.
@@marniekilbourne608 4, in fact
If Hollywood ever does a biopic on Margaret Hamilton (The Wicked Witch), Mayim Bialik should play her.
@omarcogle1965 Yes. She does resemble Margaret Hamilton a bit in the face.
Are you a child?🤣Not only did several news outlets debunked there statements about Ariana, neither party nor the ex said anything
People say that about Miss Hamilton's relationship with Judy, but the truth is that Judy and her mum were in a very good place when that movie was being made. It was only after the movie made Judy a bone fide star that Ethel Gumm was blinded by dollar signs.

To the question on if them splitting Wicked into two parts is either a way to make sure the films live up to the original broadway version, or to rake in more cash…I say this: WHY NOT BOTH!?

wicked is awesome and I feel like Alan Menken deserves at least a thank you for bringing Stephen Schwartz back to broadway
The studio wanted to cut "Over The Rainbow" (!) because they felt it slowed the pace and they didn't like a big star singing in a barnyard. Thankfully. cooler heads prevailed. (Also the film lost money on its initial release because it cost so much to make)

The 1939 film isn't the original, it's the third. There were movies in 1910 and 1925.
I find it strange when you said shades of grey. To myself, I did a song called The Shades of Grey
I love❤❤❤ Wicked...can't wait to watch on the big screen ❤❤❤❤🎉
I’m gonna go with the original book by L Frank Baum with all the details that should be put in future Wizard of Oz or Wicked remakes; simply like the Silver Slippers, the Wicked Witch having a magical crystal eyeball hidden underneath an eyepatch, or even more characters like the field mice, gnomes, or Kalidahs
Just so you know those are 2 different books by 2 different authors. Wicked was written many decades later after Baum’s books by Greg Maguire and his book was telling the story from the wicked witch’s perspective. Thus how it’s so different from the original movie.
The Wicked Witch had only one eye; there was an empty socket under her eyepatch.
@@mythicsagefire It's even more different from the original book, in which the Wicked Witches were not related, and the Wicked Witch of the West wasn't green, had just the one eye, carried an umbrella. and traveled by chariot.
Wicked was the first show that I saw in person. My grandma put up with the singing to take me

I love the Wiz and Wicked
I cannot wait until the Wicked movies. The Wizard of Oz is one of my all time favourite movies. It’s a cinematic masterpiece that has aged like fine wine.
This is going to need an update after both parts of Wicked (the movies) come out.
When i saw Wicked on Broadway, the understudy for Elfaba had to step in during the first act, she was a person of color AND two parts is ridiculous
I wonder if that was my friend Q Smith?
The great and powerful oz is always overlooked it’s a really good film
Wicked touches my heart like no other….break a leg ❤
There was a russian book adaption by Alexander Melentjewitsch Wolkow (the first book beeing in big parts practicaly a copy of "The Wizard of Oz", while the following 5 created its own stories) which was very popular in the Soviet Union and especially in Eastern Germany.
Yeah, he was just supposed to translate the first books and ended up rewriting it. lol
I have heard that originally someone didn't want Somewhere Over the Rainbow to be in the movie.
I feel Wicked too
Excellent presentation...
And we just skipped over "The Wiz" (ironic considering the comment about lack of diversity)
There are tons of version s of Oz, of far more worth than "Wicked."
I love Avenue Q!
U forgot Zelena the Wicked Witch!
Syfy had a great wizard of oz reinterpretation: Tin Man. I don’t think it gets enough props because it is a fun mini series
I think Ariana has more than proven you can't trust her with anything!
The Broadway show "The Wiz" is closer in adaptation to Baum's book than MGM'S The Wizard of Oz
As far as plot structure, it definitely is. That's because Charlie Smalls, the DJ who created i, didn't just want to do a retread of the MGM movie, as had become the fashion by then,
Wicked is the huge Win
The Wizard of Oz has no storyline and no Disney Animation
just Wicked has amazing Soundtrack
Honestly I hope they will take some parts from the actual book, Wicked ,a bit.
And Wizard of OZ written in Michigan! 🧙🎼
Idina Menzel have one of the most powerful voices, ever. Just watch Frozen 1 and 2, where she voices Elsa.
The irony of "Let it Go" is incredible. The very moment that Elsa declares her independence, she's really shutting herself up in another prison.
Let’s be honest and admit it, we all prefer Wicked over The Wizard of Oz. Wicked is the superior story.
My favorites are the Wizard of Oz and wicked because the Wizard of Oz is turning 85 this year and wicked because it’s I saw the show
Have you seen the Wicked Christmas tree at St Pancras ? It's wicked!
NOTHING BEATS A CLASSIC especially that crap today.
I remember reading that there was an attempt to delete Somewhere Over the Rainbow from the film.

The hanging munchkin theory from the original movie can anyone confirm that their was A Hanging munchkin on the set?

What about the Oz the Great and Powerful movie? That has another version of how the wicked witch becomes wicked. I love the musical, I’ve seen it twice. Growing up every year the wizard of oz was on tv and I’d watch with my gram who got to see the original release. It was totally a family bonding movie. I’m excited for the movie though.
I liked OtGaP better than I expected to. A revelation was Joey King as the China Girl. She was only 13 at the time, but delivered a full performance just with her voice.
I have a feeling this version of "Wicked" will be as unsuccessful as the movie version of "Cats," and for basically the same reasons.
Kinda disappointed the Wiz wasn’t included in this video or even mentioned maybe I missed it

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy has 3 (count 'em) 3 parts. How long was the wait between each part appearing in theaters? The movie is based on the book as well as the stage production. Having it take place in two parts is a great idea.
It was also one of the first films to popularize the trend but it’s completely unnecessary for some of the films that have followed
No. A book became a film and then a book based on the book became a musical and film
