I'm glad you did this video. Without Red Heart Super Saver and other budget friendly yarns, some of us wouldn't be able to crochet at all.

I think it's the one I learnt to knit, crochet and plastic canvas with. It's spectacular for plastic canvas. Very forgiving of mistakes without showing wear and tear?

I am 63 years old. My aunt taught me how to crochet (when I was about 9 yrs old) using RHSS. I still use it today. It is a bit stiff but will soften up after washing. I have 6 children, and all of them still have their baby blankets. The oldest child will be 45 years old !!. So RHSS will hold up for a lifetime if taken care of properly. I like it😊

Yes! When I was 7 yo trying to make a sweater for a doll. Took me most of the summer, lots of ripping out of the arms to get them to fit but it never frayed. It’s also better for plastic canvas than the special “yarn for plastic canvas” - it covers better.

Thank you, Crystal. RHSS allows a lot of us to create beautiful things we otherwise wouldn’t be able to. Everybody has their own opinions, yes, but it’s never okay to use those opinions to hurt or make fun of others. Everybody should be able to create and express themselves as they see fit, without being shamed! Thanks again.

I always say “all yarn is good yarn” and I mean it. Let’s not shame people for using red heart OR cashmere. So many of us learned on red heart. It’s a nostalgia yarn for me and will always have a special place in my heart. ❤

Oh, I forgot to tell y'all a cool tip. If you think RHSS is too stiff to work with, or it bothers your skin. Before you start with a new skein: remove the wrapper(save it), stuff down into a leg from panty hose, tie closed, toss in the washer with soap & softner-on gentle, toss in the dryer. You might want to let it sit out for 24 hours to make sure it's thoroughly dry. Then crochet away! Hope this helps someone 😊

I started learning to crochet in January this year. I'm homeless and poor. Folks donated yarn to me so I could learn and 99% of it was RHSS. I made and sold my first couple of pieces so I could buy more yarn and nearly always default to RHSS because it's what I can afford and carries the variety so I can continue to learn without being bored with what's running through my fingers. I am also a renaissance festival worker, my community works rain or shine, usually in the dirt so they appreciate wash & wear items.

I love using Red Heart and the variety of the type of yarn doesn’t matter. I also love using Big Twist from Joann. I have never used the Premier Basix which I am interested in doing since it is also a great value yarn just like the other two yarn types I listed. In my opinion if it wasn’t for these value yarns I never would’ve learned to crochet and/or knit. I love them all hopefully someday I’ll be able to purchase and use more expensive high end yarns.

My Granny used only RHSS for everything. I have a Afghan she made for me when I was 10 that I wanted more than anything. Now, 35 years later, that blanket looks just the same. It's been washed 100 times so it's soft and literal comfort all these years later. My Granny passed long ago (when I was 20 years old) and it will always be one of my most cherished items.

I hope the one I made my granddaughter holds up as well! I used RHSS on the recommendation of a crochet group I'm in, and I fear I may have overdried it already. It felt a little crisp out of the dryer, not as soft and snuggly as I'd hoped. I'll see when I visit. It may have just been not all the stiffener washed out. I hope.

Thank you Crystal Soo much for making this video. I am a single mother with a 9 year old lil girl who is my world. I am on a very tight budget (thanks world) and give everything I can to my daughter for her future, health and well being and everything in between. My fav thing to do at the end of a day is to sit and crochet and watch BOD videos. Without the inexpensive price of red heart I wouldn’t be able to do that. I wouldn’t of been able to make us blankets for winter ( I live in 🇨🇦) or cute amigurumi stuffys for my daughter. Things we need. As much as I would love to buy top dollar yarns it’s not in my budget to do so atm. It does soften up after a wash and the color pallet is endless. Soo thank you Crystal for not making me feel like an outcast. I will keep entering your giveaway in hope that one day I can make something beautiful but until then…I’ll use Red Heart ♥️. Take care Crystal. U made my day. 😊

Red Heart Yarn is durable as I have a lapghan my grandmother crocheted for me almost 50 years ago. I use Red Heart because their color is consistent (except for black) -- no dye lot, and I know that If I need more yarn for a project I can normally just go purchase another skein with no worry about the shade of the color being off.

Red Heart is what my grandmother used, my mother used, I've used, and it's what I've taught my daughters with. Super Saver is our go to when we're looking to try something new. I’ve use RHSS for over 65 years … I learned in a church class as a kid. At the time I only saw Red Heart in stores, so I bought that. Since then I’ve used a wider variety. RHSS was there for me when I had to save up to buy a skein and when I was doing a lot better financially. It’s still my #1 choice . It’s been gifts, home decor, wearables for me and my kids, etc. This very minute I’ve paused a project to write this - my other hand is full of a hat I’m making to donate to homeless youth. Yup, RHSS - easy to wash in a lavatory sink, stuff in a pocket or backpack, wear on good hair or bad hair days, and last until it’s lost and someone else starts it all over again. Thanks for reminding us that criticism about someone’s choices or $ worth is just another form of rudeness. You rock kiddo 😅

I’ve been crocheting with RHSS since I learned how to crochet at 12. It’s the benchmark of value yarns, and for every person who doesn’t like RHSS, there’s two others who do, which is why it’s never going to go away. Some dislike the “stiffness” but I agree with you 1000 percent, it helps with stitch definition. my yarn room has many different yarns from other companies…but a good chunk of my inventory is RHSS. Thanks for this video!! Definitely a great topic to talk about!

I’m one of the few people who actually prefer the stiffness of RHSS. I have arthritis associated with crohns and Red Heart helps me be able to “feel” the yarn and hold it better. I have a LOT of yarns including cashmere but waaay prefer RHSS, the softer yarns actually make my hands hurt because I’m constantly having to adjust to be able to feel it. I guess I’m one of the extremely few and thankfully I’m not a yarn snob.

I use RHSS a lot! I do a lot of amigurumi and decor pieces and the color variety is key to getting the look I'm going for. Also, my little town doesn't have a yarn store, or even a hobby store where yarn can be purchased. We do have a Walmart and they stock Red Heart! Another thing I like is the consistency of the product. I rarely get a skein where there are large color variations from the norm, or one with multiple knots or frayed areas. It's good consistent quality, across the board 99% of the time. I'm like you, Crystal, I will use it now and in the future!

I’m crocheting my third scarf with Red Heart Super Saver variegated yarns for gifts. I’m washing and drying them first because I know it softens up from doing just that. The colors are great.

I have an afghan made for me in 1980, crocheted in Red Heart Super Saver. It looks exactly the same as the day she gave it to me. It has been a nap blanket, a baby blanket, and a couch cover, washed many times, still going strong!

Thanks Crystal, ive only been crocheting for 2/3years but i dont think ive used it. I started going to my local yarn shop and bought the cheapest yarn to teach myself how to crochet. I love everything about crochet and i definitely dont care what yarn it is as long as I like it 🥰 Plus nobody should be mean about anything to other people full stop...... i remember the saying point 👉 👈 a finger at someone and you have 3 pointing right back at you 😂❤

Started knitting at 8, and crocheting at 20 (when a left-handed coworker taught me by mirroring her). I taught her to knit the same way. Anyway, I started using Red Heart before they had a super saver and I will be a very young 71 in October and still use it for some projects. Like you, I use what I like for each project and really don’t have a favorite as they just keep producing more and more beautiful yarns and colors! I do tend to buy a lot more fall colors though, and have to crochet several pumpkins every fall.😂😊
Love your ideas, techniques and thoughts about everything. And, especially that you are real! Keep doing you!❤️

Shaming is just a sign of your own insecurities. I have made a ton of stuff using red heart and your videos, and I don't plan on stopping any time soon. Great video as always!

Hi Crystal. Red Heart is one of my main 'go to' yarns. The other is Herrschner's Worsted 8. Depending on the color I'm looking for, sometimes Red Heart has the color that Herrschner's Worsted 8 doesn't so I have no problem with Red Heart AT ALL!
When I finish a project, I usually put it in the dryer with a fabric softener sheet anyway to give it a smell and make it cuddly.
I feel 'to each his own'. Everyone of us has their own preference in crocheting and that preference is neither right nor wrong. It's just what we like. What works for one may not work for another. Crocheting is an individual art. We all create differently and we make our projects our own.
Thank you Crystal for sharing your creations with us and keeping us informed of everything to do with crocheting. Take care.

I’m pretty sure my grandma used red heart exclusively (or mostly at least). I feel like it’s great for learning not just because of the price, but also that stiffness makes it easy to work with and the stitch definition is easy to see. If somebody asked my advice on learning crochet, I’d tell them start with red heart super saver. I’m making a blanket with it right now and I’m excited to finish it and get it washed. I wouldn’t use it for every project, but that’s me.

Red Heart Super Saver is the backbone of the yarn industry. It is a terrific yarn for teaching new yarnies, especially children. And for some people, it is all they can afford, and they get a wide selection to choose from. Yes, there are extravagant, gorgeous yarns available, but I find when I use something that special, I worry that I may snag it, or I don’t want it to get dirty, or stained, or worn out. It becomes something very beautiful, but has a lot of stress included with it. I like something I can freely love without fear- sounds dramatic, but I do worry with fancy yarns. I love knowing I have something that I can drag around, let the kids play on, and the pets lay on, and I can just throw it in the washer and dryer. Right now, my yarn obsession is, Red Heart, Melange series. It has fantastic color combinations, and works up beautifully. And it is quite reasonable in price. I think it gives any project a rich look. I affectionately call it my Boho yarn!

I cant use natural fibers like wool, etc. I’m disabled and cant spend time handwashing stuff. Super saver works up nicely and usually softens in the wash. The Ombre’s and Stripes are my favorites. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I also love the Jumbo skeins since there are fewer ends. I think I saw 132 colors online.
