I was VERY happy to pay for all the work Ysolda put into the pattern. The spreadsheet (or charts) that allows me to choose the yarn and gauge that I want to use and also calculates how long to make the hat based on the brim turn-up desired and weight of the skein (all without needing to swatch) is revolutionary to me. That she includes a low vision version is incredibly thoughtful.
I am knitting my very first Musselburgh while watching this! I loved learning the cast on - I started as a crocheter and this is even neater than a crochet magic loop because the stitches in the loop are less bulky. I used to think hand knitting should be complicated: why spend all that time knitting something that looks like it came from a shop? But plain stockinette can be so relaxing and meditative, "plain" patterns are the best to show off beautiful yarn, and there's always value in spending time creating the stuff we wear instead of treating it like consumables. So I'm completely sold.
Very late to the Musselburgh hat party, but so glad I came to it. 😊. Just finished my first, I’m sure it won’t be my last, hat with leftover sock yarn and I am so pleased with it. We have snow here in the UK today, which is quite rare, so I’m going to wear it out to walk the dog. Fantastic pattern so worth the money ❤
Ysolda is brilliant. I was a beta tester for Ravelry so I’ve seen countless “it” patterns come and go and this one is worth the praise. I can tell this hat is going to be the only subzero friendly hat I will have knit in the 20 years I’ve been knitting and it’s showing off the luster of the yarn I’m using so beautifully. And as someone that’s been on Ravelry since the start- there’s no one more annoying to me than the “ugh I hate trendy patterns” people. Find real problems lol
I'm right there with you. As long as trendy patterns are fun to me and are something I'll use, I'll happily knit it. If it's trendy but not my style, I'll say: "good for them but I'll pass". There are so many patterns online, why hate on other people's hard work.
I just finished my first Muselbourgh hat. We were flying from the west coast of the US to Europe. I wanted mindless knitting for planes, trains and relaxing after site seeing. I knit the crown increase prior to the trip. This was a dream to knit. I was con that 18.5 inches of stockinet would be mind numbingly boring. It was not. I almost made the mistake of making the crown too large. I looked at the photo and trusted the pattern. Thanks for the clear review.
YES!! I felt the same way. Was wondering what was so special about this hat. Didn't look all that exciting to me (I only knit super plain stuff to start with because my style is very minimalistic). Started it to get rid of a very soft fingering yarn and to see what the fuss was. Took forever to finish as it was my "wait for the kids" car knit. I got excited towards the end and absolutely loved it the second I put it on. Out of my approximately 25 hats (yes, I have a hat problem) this is my absolute favourite! Partly it is the fabric and colour I got from the soft (with 10% cashmere) fingering yarn but it all comes together with the pattern. The double and quadruple layers are just so good! I am about half way with my next fingering 100% cashmere version and will make many more!
I’ve knit 7 of them and love it. I started doing a purl row at the junction between the two sides to help it turn evenly. I also do a k2p2 pattern for 2-4” so each side has a cuff.
I'm a newbie knitter and I chose this pattern because of its construction and method. We have VERY large head circumferences in our family and I've struggled making hats that will fit comfortably for my Dad. Also, that it's a flexible method that you can use with any yarn. As a newbie knitter that struggles with most patterns, I really recommend this pattern. It, working with less tears and struggle than other patterns. 🎉
I am from Finland and we have been knitting similar tube hats for decades, this is really the best kind of construction for the really cold winters we northerners experience :). So I will not be knitting this exact patter, but I am making 8 very similar ones for Christmas, people love them and the feedback is always "best beanie ever"! The yarn I use is 70% wool 30% alpaca.
It is my absolutely favorite hat. I have never found a hat pattern that I liked the way it fit until I found this pattern. I have made 1 and plan to make more.
I didn’t understand the hype until I knit one for myself. It is the best fitting hat that I have ever knit and it is nice and warm for the damp cold Atlantic Canadian winters. I’m casting in a striped one as my Christmas Eve cast on.
you sold me as SOON as you said "you never have to purl" 😆thank you for this video, i found this super interesting and will definitely add this to my queue!!
I did knit this pattern! It's one of the only viral patterns I've made - I've never made a Ranunculus :o I tend to be hype averse, but I think the fact that it does the math for all the gauges for you really sold it for me. Yours is so creative, I love it! I just did a monotone hot pink.
I knitted 8 of these hats and just started my 9th. They are for friends and grandchildren. They are all different yarns and customised to the person colour wise and lengths, I’ve even added tiny glass beads to a couple of them. I love this pattern!
Never made it. Never heard of it till you. I’m intrigued. It sounds like this lady didn’t just give a pattern but the knowledge to each knitter to go beyond the pattern. To spread their knitters wings I don’t purchase many patterns (money is tight) but on the occasion that I can I do see it as a way to support the designer. A fellow knitter. I would much rather buy from someone independent ❤ Thank you
I'm currently knitting my fifth one, with yarn on deck for a sixth one. It's a wonderfully simple design that can easily customized based on your imagination. I knit one with stripes, and one with colourwork on one half of the hat. I like having the option of using the yarn I have/want instead of trying to source the recommended yarn or trying to find a substitute that might work.
I have made seven so far and I always make them the same way. I use self striping Felici yarn from Knitpicks. I knit half of the hat with several different Felici color ways so that each stripe color only appears once. So it looks like about 25 different colors of stripes. Then the second half is a solid color. I think this is the most special and amazing hat in the world because I make each one unique with different colorways or using them in a different order. People can wear the stripe side out or the solid side. I will definitely continue to make them!
I have knit several of these. I love it for social knitting and also for knitting round and round while watching Netflix or other such programs. I donate most of them. Great way to use up leftover yarn and you can get creative with colour placement.
I bought her pattern and am working on my first one. And I’m already planning my next one(S)! I love how versatile and accommodating the pattern is! Definitely worth it!
I can’t believe that people who ‘won’t’ pay for this pattern feels the need to rag on those of us who will pay. And coming from ‘me’ who does the math really well for my own designs I find this baffles me because I ‘understand’ how much work goes into doing the designing thing. I still have two ufo’s waiting for me to finish formulating. And one of them for six years now. Geez! If you don’t want to pay for the pattern just be kind and keep it to yourself. Some of us just want to knit without having to labour over the arithmetic and geometry for god’s sake! My hat is coming along nicely 😊
Thanks for the explanation ! I thought £6 was expensive for a simple hat pattern, I'm an old lady and have to watch every £ I spend. I have family who spend a lot of time out of doors here in the UK, camping, walking, cycling etc. I have now purchased it.
I am on my first hat and I’m so glad you said the bit about trusting the pattern. I finished my increases and thought that it didn’t look big enough! So glad I saw your video today.
I'm an Iowa girl and completely agree that most hats just aren't warm enough for our winter, and it's too loose to keep the winds out. I brought this pattern awhile ago but haven't made one yet. You have helped me start one 😊
I don’t know how I stumbled upon this video, but I’m glad I did! I’ve made a couple Musselburghs and thought it just wasn’t for me, but now I know it’s because I was making them TOO BIG! Thank you for explaining the part about thinking it’s too small when you’re done with the increases. Now I’m motivated to try again. I love the striping pattern on yours.
Love your podcast; succinct, informative, intelligent. Thank you for celebrating the designer. She deserves to be lauded. Her patterns are always a good investment. As I watched, I mentally reviewed my stash. Hmmm…I could be knitting this same hat over and over in 2024 and busting my stash big time!
I have had the pattern for a while now and have been meaning to get to it. Since I no longer have access to windows and excel I can’t use the calculator she set up for the pattern, but I have very good control in manipulating gauge so I will use the print and mobile versions to achieve my goals. I have started the first one now and using the size Adult Medium with a 3mm needle which gets me 7 stitches to the inch and loosely measures 18.28 inches from an overall stitch count of 128. My husband’s head is 20.25 inches around so I will see how it goes with the negative ease as it progresses
As another commenter said, I am also "hype-averse", but I tried this one and I LOOOOVE it so much. I've made many of them, and love using my sock-yarn scraps, for it. I hate yarn waste and this pattern is BRILLIANT for using up your sock yarn scraps. Too fun. Try it.
Great, helpful review. I was introduced to this design concept years ago in an Elizabeth Zimmerman book. I'm intrigued about Ysole's design with all the gauge calculations. I'll look into it for my next "potato chipey" knit ❤😂
I agree! Montreal winters can be unforgiving (c'est frette! 🥶) and our heads need to be well covered. Thank you for this review, I'm running to Ravelry to purchase it.
I enjoy your videos. I have learned a lot. I have had the Musselburgh hat pattern for 3 years and I have knit 8 hats in different weight yarns. My favorite is fingering weight. I have one on the needles now and one to cast on in yarn my daughter brought me from Scotland.
I just purchased and finished my first Musselburgh the week of Thanksgiving. I really love this pattern. I can make it as easy or complicated as I want it to be. I did a helix stripe on side A and some self striping crazy stuff to happen on side B and it came out gorgeous.
Thanks for your comments about this hat. I just bought the pattern a few days ago and have watched some other videos about it and I love your two-sided idea. It looks really nice. I also love the construction of the top of the hat. It's not bunched up with fabric like some other designs are. I am really excited to make this beanie. I have just to figure out what yarn to buy!
I've made two Musselborough hats. I have really enjoyed them. I made them with different colors on the inside and the outside. They're fun to make and wear.
This is a great vid and Ysolda is an amazing designer!! She is so very good at explaining not only how to adjust her patterns but also why it works!! I love all of her designs that I have knitted, including Musselburgh ❤. I used it most recently to use up of a bunch of fingering weight sock yarn and then I over dyed it and it is wonderful!! It fits perfectly, is super warm, and exceptionally frugal because I used up scraps that were otherwise languishing in my scrap bag!! Voila!!
I knit my first one this year....my grandson asked for a hat in Edmonton Oiler colours. I knit one half with variegated yarn, the other half with a couple of stripes thrown in. I will make more in the future 😊
I just discovered the Musselburgh hat a few weeks ago, and am knitting my first one now. I like that I don’t have to swatch before starting the hat, and it’s a great “social” knitting project. I can chat with people while I’m knitting and not have to worry about counting stitches. Simply love this hat!
Great breakdown. I've made 5 so far because YES: there are so many possibilities re: yarn choice and pattern (solid, striped, ribbing). And each hat not knit in one yarn can be worn a few ways. It is truly a worthwhile knit and I'll be making a number more.
I have made 4 and cast on 5-7 last week. Take a guess what everybody is getting for christmas ;-) I made more complicated hats before but this one is just so comfortable! Plus i'm a bit stressed out right now and it's pure comfort knitting.
Yep I bought the pattern several months ago and have attempted to make it several times. The stitches keep falling off my needles, I am going to give it another try with my wood needles . I have the pattern and the yarn looking at me every day. After watching your wonderful podcast, today may be the day I accomplish one of my goals. Thanks so much .
I hand spin so having a pattern that I don't have to have to worry about the yarn meeting gauge exactly is a plus. I don't have to Fiddle with different needles, just get a fabric that works the best for the yarn. I made a lace weight yarn hat that wasn't on her chart but I used her chart to figure out the stitch ratio for each size and gauge. It was very helpful. I also knit one long enough that it could be used unfolded as a short scarf for my husband. The other plus is as a hat it could be extra slouchy, doubled up to the crown, doubled and slouchy or folded twice for super extra warmth for the ears.
Thanks for your review. I found this hat and tried about dozen times to cast on then found a great tutorial and snap just like that it clicked. I have knit 5 now and given them away, they are so easy, once you get past the first one.
Maybe I am the only person in the universe who had not heard of this pattern, but I enjoyed your review and I will definitely be adding this pattern to my Ravelry library. Cheers from Nova Scotia/ Nouvelle Ecosse, salut!
Just finished my 3rd Musselburgh hat! About to cast one #4. I was glad to pay for the pattern to support the designer. It is great for waiting room knitting, and any other place I go !
I love everything about this hat. I’ve made 3. It’s also makes a really good chemo hat. Perfect for sailing. Our ears are always warm. We live in Scotland. I’ll be making some for my grand children too. Thank you for this fabulous review
I got it, made one already for hubby and am now making mine. I love this pattern! Oh and i have people waiting in line for more as well. I'm using Patons Kroy sock yarn with a 2.75/size 2 knitting needle for mine. I plan on using different yarns as well.
Needle designations seem to differ with the continental divides of the Atlantic and Pacific. I am using Addi 3mm designated US 2 🤔 And since Addi works by mm they have incentive to keep it on point. I did an actual swatch with both 2.75mm and 3mm and found that the stretch I get with the 3mm is better for my tension. I knit neither tight nor loose so it always has to do with the drape and stretch for me
TY! I’m searching for the correct thread for my f I r s t Musslebrough! You helped me already, by stating we should not judge the finished size too early…just from the initial increases. “Trust the pattern”..was great advice!
I too have seen Everyone talking about / making this hat. When I first started knitting, Elizabeth Zimmermann books were fabulous! E. Z. Has a pattern, start at brim, work to crown, pick up & repeat. Then I purchased quite a few Carol A. Anderson (Cottage Creations) patterns, hat start at crown, knit a long tube, decrease. I’ve made several of these, different yarn weights, needles, etc. Fast forward, Ysolda !!! She truly is a gem, love her “why & how” explanations! I’ve been debating whether to get this hat pattern, as I’ve “mathed” all my previous iterations, BUT… I will probably get this pattern anyway, show of support! I prefer 9 - 12 inc/dec points on my hats, but I LOVE that Ysolda has the math “built in”. The last 3 hats I made, Helically knit using scraps! Check out Ysolda’s Garter St fingerless mitts pattern (Ravelry), very FUN !! Glad you like this style hat! Agree DPs / beginning can be fiddly, but … the end result is worth it!! Thanks for this, reminding me to cast on another hat, easy & nice to pick up whenever (as are socks!!), Happy knitting!!
@@BeeBee123ist Yes to Barbara Walker: Knitting from the Top (sweaters)… I reference this book all. the. time. I don’t design/publish, but I have a lot of fun playing around w ideas, E. Z. and B. W. gave me the basics, tips. Imagination takes me everywhere else. Currently in a top-down cardigan (v-neck) phase using up stash (if that’s possible…I have a monthly box = more yarn. Go figure 😅) Happy Knitting!
@@LottaSocks I don’t publish because it takes technical grading for sizes and I can’t be bothered at this point. I would need a MacBook and software for it and all of it is a hassle. I do love the creative energy of designing to fit myself though so I get an outlet for that need. And all of that thanks to EZ and B G W. I was designing my first pair of socks on Magic Loop two at a time right out of the gate. And I knit socks to fill in the spaces in my knitting like when I get bored with projects and need to make a functional item like socks. I pull out one of my lace conversions and apply it to some yarn and I am of to the races. This hat will fill the same function and it has the added benefit of being gift-able to worthy friends 👍🏼
I'm glad that I found your channel. I've started one and wasn't sure if it was going to be too small for my husband. After watching your review, I'll keep on knitting. And you have a new subscriber.
Enjoyed your discussion very much, I love my Musselburgh, it is the best hat I have ever made, I tell everybody they need must knit one. I look forward to seeing what you do next, I am planning one now and will use some silk mohair or alpaca lace with a fingering weight... Thanks for the chat!
I have made one - you're right, it's easy to make it a little too big because you're second-guessing yourself/the pattern, but I made it for my sister and she has a big head, so hopefully it works! It really is a magic pattern, and you helped me put my finger on exactly why!
Thank you for this video! I was definitely wondering what all the fuss was about, and I'd heard that it would work for any gauge but was quite sceptical about that bc I just didn't understand how it would work!! So thank you for explaining that, and also I love that you've basically knit 4 hats in 1, that's such a fun idea! I didn't previously think I'd want to knit this hat, given how basic it is, I didn't think buying the pattern would be worth it, but I would now consider giving it a go!
I’m a Ravelry member and I have never seen this hat. Plus I was just looking for a hat pattern that is super warm, because we live in Minnesota! Now I must get this hat! Thanks so much for sharing this!
I loved this video - thank you! I don't make hats. I don't wear hats. But I now feel like getting this pattern and making it! I have seen a lot of TH-camrs saying they've made it, so it was really good to hear you talk about it. I don't have any patterns I specifically want to hear about, but I'm interested in any you talk about . . . now who can I make a hat for . . 🤔
Merci !! J’hésitais entre le bonnet Oslo et le Musselburgh et je suis maintenant convaincue ! You are my favorite knitting teacher, I’ve learned so much with you ! En français ou in english, I don’t mind, but please continue ! Thank you ! 😄
I am actually knitting my 4th Musselburgh Hat. One for me and three gifts. A benediction for watching Netflix series. 😉 The spreadsheet is awsome. I really love the stripes you made, I might copy you. Thank you for adding your touch.
Thanks for the encouragement to cast on. I'd tried before but managed to confuse myself - not the pattern's fault, just me not believing how simple it is 😍
I'm so glad I watched your video. I've known about the hat for a long time but was never drawn to it. Too simple, boring knitting, nothing special... Now I'm a convert! With so much fingering weight leftovers around I might just cast one on today! 😂 Thank you for the thorough explanation! ❤🧶
I didn’t know about this hat and am a Ravelry user. It looks perfect for the hat I want to make for my brother! I enjoyed listening to you while casting on for the Frohlocke hat!
Have had the pattern for awhile now but was intimidated to start it. Upon hearing your review, I am going to cast on confidently. Thank you for the inspiring video. Love your style. 😃💕🎄
Even though I've been knitting for quite some time, I truly still consider myself a true beginner. I can't really read patterns. I rely mostly on TH-cam video tutorials to make something. I purchased the Felix Pullover/Sweater by Amy Christoffers because everyone I have spoken to said that I should be able to do it. To my dismay, I could not understand the pattern. It is way too complicated for me. I have tried reading the pattern over and over again... but I am just not getting it. So, I guess I will not be knitting this hat. I love how yours came out. It is beautiful on you. I can only admire from the distance. Haha! Thank you for sharing.
Interesting. Do you find that you get stuck at a certain point in the pattern or is it not obvious for you were to start? I'd love to make a video about reading patterns for beginners because once you unlock the ability to read them, you truly have so many more options than if you follow video tutorials only.
@@cloknits - First, thank you for responding. I appreciate it. Anyway, if you have the pattern, I got stuck right after the designer talked about placing the markers. I have tried so hard to understand how the Wrap & Turn method is but, to this day, I still cannot comprehend it. I even watched different videos on it. I spoke with someone who said that I don't have to do the Wrap & Turn method but from reading the pattern, I don't know how to follow it. My $7 went down the drain. There is this one designer named Ashley Lillis. She has a TH-cam Channel. She made a video of making a raglan sweater. It's called Winter Bluff Sweater. She walks you through the entire process. I downloaded the pattern and watched the step-by-step video and to my surprise, I actually understood the pattern. Through this method, I was able to knit the sweater and I LOVE IT. Not all designers write their patterns the same way as others. I think that's the problem. At least for me, it is. Sorry for all the rambling here. Anyway, while I love your idea of making a video about reading patterns for beginners, but reading and seeing how the process is done are two different things for a visual person like me. I'll give you an example of what I mean. In dancing for example. If I was to read an instruction on how to dance a certain dance move, I probably wouldn't be able to follow it. But, if I'm able to watch someone do the steps, I most likely would be able to follow it. I hope this made sense. BUT, if you decide to make a video about reading patterns, I would watch it... but know that someone like me will probably still not get it. I hope you understand.
This is a great review! I came across this on Ravelry and I do plan to make it. I did wonder if the price refected something complicated in the knitting, but I did see that it is multi-sized, multi gauge. I'm glad to know it is an easy knit! I'm making the 1898 Hat which is a little complicated in ways. This pattern will be great because I have lots of kids and grandkids through my boyfriend and this pattern will be great for them, all living in Montana.
I love watching about knitting great patterns while I have my morning coffee. Thank you, I learned so much! I need an easy hat pattern. I laughed out loud about you saying "you don't have to worry about short german rows . because I am just now casting on my first sweater with short rows right off the neck in the back and really have to pay attention.
I mark all of my ‘double stitches’ with removable (safety pin) markers and I keep the ds marked even when I have knit it. My markers are colour coded so it makes it easy for me to pinpoint which is the new ds that has to be knitted together etc. The markers make it logistically easier to keep track. I use the Cocoknits markers. Any short row method is fiddly and it is prudent to keep track of all turns
Hi Clo, thank you for your video, I have never heard of this hat. I also live in Québec so I will definitely check it out. I’m a beginner to knitting as I normally like to crochet 🧶 Much appreciated for the information 😊
I have put off buying the pattern because of the finicky cast on but your video made me purchase it. Thank you for a clear, concise review! Happy knitting.🧶
O ya i''ve made a few, 14 so far, and plan on my next being a scrappy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this super simple, tator chip knit. I'm still trying to find a good way to do the ends. It's fiddly but as you see hasn't stopped me yet. Great mindless knit. It's a great canvas too if one wants to play around. I haven't yet but definitely debating it.
I've been hearing about this hat for a while now and listening to this review has piqued my interest to get the pattern. Thank you for doing this review. ❤
I am still working on my first hat. The initial pinhole cast on made me crazy. I used sock weight yarn on size 3 needles and am loving how it looks. I will finish, hopefully this year. I made another with a provisional cast on and it looks the same.
It had been a few years since I used the pinhole and it was making me directionally crazy until my brain came up right and reminded me that it is like knitting toe up socks. I had to remember to use the bottom needle to knit off the top needle 😂
I am in Toronto not as cold as quebec but yes my ears need cover. I made this hat and loved the process. I think I will make another in colors i like. The first was to get rid of scraps.
I have done the crown already and is in the body. Go for it! It is the very best kind of knitting which require very little brainwork because it has already been done. 2.75-3mm needles, markers, a row counter, and you are all set. Don’t forget the measuring tape for gauge
My partner is very fussy about hats, even shop bought ones! He really doesnt like hats that are too tight so when I have tried to knit for him, I've made it too big. I think this pattern could potentially work for him (as long as gauge swatch doesn't lie to me!) and also be a great gift because of the foldable brim. Thanks for the recommendation ☺️
I bought this pattern awhile ago and have not knit it yet. Thank you for dedicating a video to reviewing it :) I think I will knit it next -- and I love your version! You mentioned that you might do some more pattern deep dives and I would love to hear about your Lunenburg. I started one but got stuck and would love some tips
I hope you are getting a sales commission! I had NO INTENTION of buying this pattern or making this kind of hat. I have no use for it. But I do have a lot of extra fingering yarn, and I do appreciate a well-written pattern, so I bought it, and have started making one. You rock.
Thank you for this video, I’m intrigued by this pattern now, I live in a cold place with snow in the winter, and find most pull on hats too drafty. I would enjoy more pattern inspiration videos, your favourite Nordic colourwork jumper, maybe?👍💚
Please get the pattern and knit it. Because I live in New York it can get really wintery in January and February and I was good and tired of draughty hats too. I am finally knitting my first one. I came across the podcasts on the hat because I wanted to see what Ysolda may have posted before I start the hat. Go figure! I found quite a few. The most helpful podcast was Mostly Knitting and CloKnits
Thanks for this video 🎉. I live in Saskatchewan Canada, and it’s -38C today and was trying to debate if I want to purchase the Musselburgh hat. I want a double layered hat, but thought maybe I could find a free pattern for a similar style hat. But your explanation of why ppl purchase this pattern makes sense ! On my way to ravelry to purchase it. 😊 🥰 Thank you again
-38, ouch! It's been pretty mild weather here in Montreal but we did get a ton of snow in the last week. I'm always reaching for my Musselburgh hat even if I own 15 different toques!
I haven't knit one and honestly wasn't sure about the pattern. It doesn't get nearly as cold here as where you live, so I thought it might be too warm. Now you've explained the options, I might think about doing a looser gauge and smaller size and see what happens. After I finish a few other things.
@cloknits That's an interesting idea. I do have some wool/cotton yarn leftover from a top I made. Not sure if it's enough though. I will keep thinking about it and try and remember to let you know if I do make it.
So much though goes into her patterns and you can tell she cares
I am knitting my very first Musselburgh while watching this! I loved learning the cast on - I started as a crocheter and this is even neater than a crochet magic loop because the stitches in the loop are less bulky. I used to think hand knitting should be complicated: why spend all that time knitting something that looks like it came from a shop? But plain stockinette can be so relaxing and meditative, "plain" patterns are the best to show off beautiful yarn, and there's always value in spending time creating the stuff we wear instead of treating it like consumables. So I'm completely sold.
I can relate to all of this. Thank you for your comment!
I love the fact that you pay tribute to the designer. Also, love the sweater you are wearing.
Thank you! She created such a nice pattern, she deserves all the props.
Amazing!
100% Cashmere sounds like heaven on earth!!! The simplicity of this pattern makes it so you can really appreciate the beauty of a special yarn.
I’ve knit 7 of them and love it. I started doing a purl row at the junction between the two sides to help it turn evenly. I also do a k2p2 pattern for 2-4” so each side has a cuff.
That's a great customization.
I'm glad it's been a good pattern for you. I love it so much!
Cold winters of Finland are similar to ones of Montreal so I know what you mean.
What is the pattern you use?
@@judithcarter7898 I just knit it without a written pattern, based on previous experiments I have learned how many stitches is good for me :).
And the north of Scotland has a great amount of Norwegian heritage and bloodlines plus of course it is just as cold so hence the double layered hat ❤️
Love the versatility of the pattern, it’s a great stash buster, and perfect travel knitting. And it actually looks good on me🥰
I don't think a classic beanie can look bad on anyone!
Great idea for the Christmas Eve, instead of socks!
you sold me as SOON as you said "you never have to purl" 😆thank you for this video, i found this super interesting and will definitely add this to my queue!!
I'm glad you liked it!
oh, your going to love it.
I love this pattern and have knit several! Great way to showcase beautiful fingering weight yarns!
I did knit this pattern! It's one of the only viral patterns I've made - I've never made a Ranunculus :o
I tend to be hype averse, but I think the fact that it does the math for all the gauges for you really sold it for me. Yours is so creative, I love it! I just did a monotone hot pink.
Yes, it's not the shape itself but the ease of just casting on and going.
The Ranunculus is the only sweater I ever knit for myself. It was remarkably simple, yet gorgeous. I think that is why it's so popular.
I literally JUST purchased the ranunculus pattern 😄
I knitted 8 of these hats and just started my 9th. They are for friends and grandchildren. They are all different yarns and customised to the person colour wise and lengths, I’ve even added tiny glass beads to a couple of them. I love this pattern!
It's highly customizable! I love it.
Never made it. Never heard of it till you.
I’m intrigued.
It sounds like this lady didn’t just give a pattern but the knowledge to each knitter to go beyond the pattern. To spread their knitters wings
I don’t purchase many patterns (money is tight) but on the occasion that I can I do see it as a way to support the designer. A fellow knitter. I would much rather buy from someone independent ❤
Thank you
I'm currently knitting my fifth one, with yarn on deck for a sixth one. It's a wonderfully simple design that can easily customized based on your imagination. I knit one with stripes, and one with colourwork on one half of the hat. I like having the option of using the yarn I have/want instead of trying to source the recommended yarn or trying to find a substitute that might work.
Absolutely, I have so much yarn that is just waiting for a pattern like this.
I love that!!!! Such a fun way to use small skeins.
Love that idea too....I have a ton of Felici....Great idea!
I have made 6 until now and I am obsessed with the simplicity of the pattern and the great fit of the hat.
Amazing! I could see myself knitting 6.
I have knit several of these. I love it for social knitting and also for knitting round and round while watching Netflix or other such programs. I donate most of them. Great way to use up leftover yarn and you can get creative with colour placement.
Absolutely. It's great potato chippy knitting.
Even if you can do all the math, doesn't mean you want to! 😄
Thanks for the explanation ! I thought £6 was expensive for a simple hat pattern, I'm an old lady and have to watch every £ I spend. I have family who spend a lot of time out of doors here in the UK, camping, walking, cycling etc. I have now purchased it.
Wonderful!
My next one will have a mohair strand through it for sure! That's my ultimate winter-proofing step!
@@cloknits I have gotten into Surry alpaca because it doesn't shed as much as mohair but is still warm and soft
Too fun. Try it.
Sometimes there's a true reason behind the hype. I'm glad you are having fun with this one.
Great video! I was sitting on the the fence with this pattern and your explanation made me realize I want it.
I making myself realize I want more! 😂
This hat is easily memorized as well,so versatile and creative
Yes! You can tweak it to your liking.
I love that I can wear it slouchy but then pull in tight on my head of the brimmed version and be able to wear a hood over it. FA FRETTE STI!
@@cloknits 🤣🤣🤣
I enjoy your videos. I have learned a lot. I have had the Musselburgh hat pattern for 3 years and I have knit 8 hats in different weight yarns. My favorite is fingering weight. I have one on the needles now and one to cast on in yarn my daughter brought me from Scotland.
I just purchased and finished my first Musselburgh the week of Thanksgiving. I really love this pattern. I can make it as easy or complicated as I want it to be. I did a helix stripe on side A and some self striping crazy stuff to happen on side B and it came out gorgeous.
Love it!
I now have 2 and I wear them all the time!
I've made two Musselborough hats. I have really enjoyed them. I made them with different colors on the inside and the outside. They're fun to make and wear.
They are kind of addicting aren't they?
This is a great vid and Ysolda is an amazing designer!! She is so very good at explaining not only how to adjust her patterns but also why it works!! I love all of her designs that I have knitted, including Musselburgh ❤. I used it most recently to use up of a bunch of fingering weight sock yarn and then I over dyed it and it is wonderful!! It fits perfectly, is super warm, and exceptionally frugal because I used up scraps that were otherwise languishing in my scrap bag!! Voila!!
I totally agree!
You convinced me that I really need this pattern!! Thanks so much! 😊
Hope you like it! 😍
I purchased it because I felt the need for the extra warm coverage here in New York. It gets very cold sometimes
I knit my first one this year....my grandson asked for a hat in Edmonton Oiler colours. I knit one half with variegated yarn, the other half with a couple of stripes thrown in. I will make more in the future 😊
Love it!
I just discovered the Musselburgh hat a few weeks ago, and am knitting my first one now. I like that I don’t have to swatch before starting the hat, and it’s a great “social” knitting project. I can chat with people while I’m knitting and not have to worry about counting stitches. Simply love this hat!
Yes to all of this!
Great breakdown. I've made 5 so far because YES: there are so many possibilities re: yarn choice and pattern (solid, striped, ribbing). And each hat not knit in one yarn can be worn a few ways. It is truly a worthwhile knit and I'll be making a number more.
I'm already thinking of the next 3!!! haha
I love that you are in Quebec, knitting for the same weather as me. I will definitely be making this hat more than once.
I want one in every color!!!
I have made 4 and cast on 5-7 last week. Take a guess what everybody is getting for christmas ;-) I made more complicated hats before but this one is just so comfortable! Plus i'm a bit stressed out right now and it's pure comfort knitting.
Exactly the Musselburgh hat is the chicken noodle soup of knitting!
Thanks so much
.
Are you using dpns? I used magic loop which might be easier to keep those stiches in place in the first rounds.
Thnx, I'll give magic loop a try
I knit practically everything with Magic Loop. I surmise that you are using double points
I found your video just in time. I am abut tonstart this hat, and appreciate your comments. Also, what a lovely sweater you are wearing. ❤
Thank you! Have fun knitting the BEST hat.
This is how I found her video 😁 I was looking for Ysolda’s postings of her hat before starting
Yes to all of this!!! Thank you for all the ideas.
Thanks for the information! The Musselburgh hat is in the top 5 of "Hot Right Now" probably due to your video :)
Haha, maybe it is due to my video. We might never know!
Thanks for your review. I found this hat and tried about dozen times to cast on then found a great tutorial and snap just like that it clicked. I have knit 5 now and given them away, they are so easy, once you get past the first one.
A hat is always a great gift!
Maybe I am the only person in the universe who had not heard of this pattern, but I enjoyed your review and I will definitely be adding this pattern to my Ravelry library. Cheers from Nova Scotia/ Nouvelle Ecosse, salut!
I'm glad to have introduced you to it!
Just finished my 3rd Musselburgh hat!
About to cast one #4. I was glad to pay for the pattern to support the designer.
It is great for waiting room knitting, and any other place I go !
Thank you ! I bought this pattern and had some questions and you have answered some of those questions . Thank you
You're welcome!
I love everything about this hat. I’ve made 3. It’s also makes a really good chemo hat. Perfect for sailing. Our ears are always warm. We live in Scotland. I’ll be making some for my grand children too. Thank you for this fabulous review
I love it! Hats got the whole family!
I got it, made one already for hubby and am now making mine. I love this pattern! Oh and i have people waiting in line for more as well. I'm using Patons Kroy sock yarn with a 2.75/size 2 knitting needle for mine. I plan on using different yarns as well.
It absolutely a gift worthy pattern, I don't know anyone who doesn't like a folded brim beanie!
Glad I could help!
I have made a total of 3 of these hats and can’t get enough. It is such a great stash busting project
It's less fiddly than socks and takes less time than a blanket.
Thank you. I have been wanting to make a “double hat” for quite a while. This is even better than I wished for.
I'm glad you like it!
You truly just listed all the most amazing teachers there. I'm really glad to see designers like Ysolda get the attention they deserve.
You can never go wrong learning with EZ and Barbara G as they have been my primary teachers when I started knitting
@@BeeBee123ist
Yes to Barbara Walker: Knitting from the Top (sweaters)… I reference this book all. the.
Go figure 😅)
Happy Knitting!
Thank you for watching and commenting! Welcome to my channel.
This was an excellent podcast! You’ve sold it to me. I’m fed up with hats that don’t fit. I shall certainly be doing this one now!
It is frustrating to knit all the way to the top to not like the fit.
I've got ideas for the next ones but I already have too many projects on my needles!
what a great video!! Thanks so much Clo you did a great job explaining the hat that I'm now working on
I have made one - you're right, it's easy to make it a little too big because you're second-guessing yourself/the pattern, but I made it for my sister and she has a big head, so hopefully it works! It really is a magic pattern, and you helped me put my finger on exactly why!
I will no longer second guess the genius Ysolda, I've learned my lesson! ;)
@@cloknits Exactly! All my trust is in Saint Ysolda now!
I'm glad I answered some of your questions.
I’m a Ravelry member and I have never seen this hat. Plus I was just looking for a hat pattern that is super warm, because we live in Minnesota! Now I must get this hat! Thanks so much for sharing this!
I'm glad I made you discover something new to you!
I loved this video - thank you! I don't make hats. I don't wear hats. But I now feel like getting this pattern and making it!
I have seen a lot of TH-camrs saying they've made it, so it was really good to hear you talk about it. I don't have any patterns I specifically want to hear about, but I'm interested in any you talk about . . . now who can I make a hat for . . 🤔
I'm sure you have millennial in your life who would love a beanie! 😂
Such a brilliant pattern and each one I've knit is my favorite hat!
The last hat knit is the favorite hat, right? haha
I love the colors and stripes you chose for this hat ❤️
Thank you. I really love it too.
Love this deep dive.
Thanks for explaining this hat. I’ve been thinking of trying it and now I will.
Yay! I hope you like it as much as i do.
Merci !! J’hésitais entre le bonnet Oslo et le Musselburgh et je suis maintenant convaincue ! You are my favorite knitting teacher, I’ve learned so much with you ! En français ou in english, I don’t mind, but please continue ! Thank you ! 😄
Oh merci beaucoup ! It means a lot!
I am actually knitting my 4th Musselburgh Hat. One for me and three gifts.
A benediction for watching Netflix series. 😉
The spreadsheet is awsome.
I really love the stripes you made, I might copy you.
Thank you for adding your touch.
It's a very versatile pattern, you can have so much fun with it or keep it plain and simple.
Thanks for the encouragement to cast on. I'd tried before but managed to confuse myself - not the pattern's fault, just me not believing how simple it is 😍
You can do it!
I'm so glad I watched your video. I've known about the hat for a long time but was never drawn to it. Too simple, boring knitting, nothing special... Now I'm a convert! With so much fingering weight leftovers around I might just cast one on today! 😂
Thank you for the thorough explanation! ❤🧶
Is it something special? No. But is it great and exactly what need sometimes, YES!
I just finished my first one and have started a second. These make great presents
I don't know anyone who wouldn't like it!
I didn’t know about this hat and am a Ravelry user. It looks perfect for the hat I want to make for my brother! I enjoyed listening to you while casting on for the Frohlocke hat!
Thank you! I'm sure your brother will love it.
Have had the pattern for awhile now but was intimidated to start it. Upon hearing your review, I am going to cast on confidently. Thank you for the inspiring video. Love your style. 😃💕🎄
You're welcome. I hope you like it!
Feel the same about the Felix Pullover too much hype . Spent a lot of money on patterns that people thought was perfect but Felix was not it for me.
Same, I need a video tutorial, that’s why I don’t buy patterns.
Same. I bought the musselborough hat pattern but I can’t get through the cast on and increases. I need a video tutorial and can’t find one.
Yes! The ability to make it for anyone and at the gauge of yarns you have in your stash is amazing.
I'm glad you liked it!
I'm glad you'll try it.
Wonderful!
I've been hearing about this hat for a while now and listening to this review has piqued my interest to get the pattern. Thank you for doing this review. ❤
You're welcome. I hope you like it as much as I do!
I am still working on my first hat. The initial pinhole cast on made me crazy. I used sock weight yarn on size 3 needles and am loving how it looks. I will finish, hopefully this year. I made another with a provisional cast on and it looks the same.
See, i didn't mind the pinhole cast on... I guess I'm weird, everyone else seems to hate it! haha
I feel like it's difficult to knot just one!
Super helpful and informative video! Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the video. I had heard of it but wasn’t sold. Seemed basic to me. I think I will try it.
I feel like it's the kind of basic you need to have at least one of.
I think it would be great for someone that doesn't like the thightness of ribbing.
That's a great one as well!
I've knit 2 of them and plan to make more.
Never too many hats!
I hope you are getting a sales commission! I had NO INTENTION of buying this pattern or making this kind of hat. I have no use for it. But I do have a lot of extra fingering yarn, and I do appreciate a well-written pattern, so I bought it, and have started making one. You rock.
Haha I don't but I'm just really glad to share patterns I enjoy.
Thank you. I wondered about the big deal of this hat. You have made it clear to me that I want to make one or more. I'm off to ravelry.
🙌🏻 Let me know how you like it. I made a second one and I wear both all the time.
I have seen the hat and Knitty Natty's multiple ones. I am considering and even more so after your video about it. THank you.
I love my two versions!
Thank you. You have inspired me to make one of these.
Yay! I'm glad you liked it.
Thank you for this video, I’m intrigued by this pattern now, I live in a cold place with snow in the winter, and find most pull on hats too drafty. I would enjoy more pattern inspiration videos, your favourite Nordic colourwork jumper, maybe?👍💚
Sounds like a great idea!
🥰 Thank you again
-38, ouch! It's been pretty mild weather here in Montreal but we did get a ton of snow in the last week. I'm always reaching for my Musselburgh hat even if I own 15 different toques!
Never heard of this pattern but plan to check it out
Yes, I love this pattern.
I'm glad to hear it!
Ok. I am convinced. Will finally surrender and buy the pattern. 😊
Come to the dark side, we have great hats!
I haven't knit one and honestly wasn't sure about the pattern. It doesn't get nearly as cold here as where you live, so I thought it might be too warm. Now you've explained the options, I might think about doing a looser gauge and smaller size and see what happens. After I finish a few other things.
I could see it knitted in a wool and cotton blend for a lighter hat as well.
@cloknits That's an interesting idea. I do have some wool/cotton yarn leftover from a top I made. Not sure if it's enough though. I will keep thinking about it and try and remember to let you know if I do make it.
