    Please Update The Institute's name to Bhandarkar Indian Research Institute. The word Oriental doesn't reflect the truth of Indian Continents true form.

    As a devout Hindu, student of Acharyya Durgacharan Sankhyatirtha and Dr. Srijib Nayathirthar of University of Kolkata, disciple of Swami Viswapranab Attyaashram, I have an innate respect and deep love towards your Institute and your precious publications. But in Kolkata I seldom have an access to your treasure-trove. My interest is towards Tantra & Yoga. Can you please help me as because presently I am working on "Sadhak Bamakhyapa", the Tara Sadhak and Saint of Tarapith, Birbhum, W.B in English. As I too belong to Tantric Cult, naturally Tantra is of special interest to me. Shall be highly grateful to you for your help.

    Prof Madhav might very well have shared his written lecture rather than reading it out in a seemingly arduous manner

    It is a very good talk. It would have been appropriate if the lecture was delivered in an Indian language either Marathi or hindi. Even Sanskrit would have been excellent considering the topic.

    Thanks to BORI for making this lecture available on TH-cam. Dr Madhav Deshpande’s lecture has provided a lot of historical background of R. G. Bhandarkar’s times when German Indology was growing, British colonial rule was transforming the Indian education system and the response of Indian intellectuals to it - specifically Marathi Brahmins. The impact of the ‘Historical & competitive Critical’ method as applied by Western Indologists to our scriptures and the development of the ‘modern outlook’ of our Intelligentsia needs to be analyzed in today’s context. While the historical context of the post-1818 (after Peshwa to British transition of power) to the times of Justice Ranade, Justice Telang and Lokmanya Tilak has been captured very well in the lecture, the impact of the ‘Historical & competitive Critical’ method has to be questioned. For example, the German Indologists like Hermann Oldenberg - referred to in the lecture - used the ‘Historical & competitive Critical’ method on Mahabharata and Bhagavad Gita. His modern interpretation of BahgavadGita (‘modern’ as Dr Deshpande likes to say generally about the Western Indologists) found that the original Gita was of only 58 shlokas out of 700 shlokas by dropping the majority of the Gita - as we know it for ages - inferring that “folk hero Krishna was divinized” and even questioning if Gita was indeed spoken during Mahabharata war. Such an Indologist cannot be Rishi. ‘Historical & competitive Critical’ method has been used by these ‘English, French and German rishis’ for the last 250+ years, to distort our scriptures under the names of ‘modern outlook’, “research etc.
    The second biggest issue with this ‘Historical & competitive Critical’ method is that it has simply cancelled the Indian traditional commentaries of likes of Adi Shankaracharya, Madhvacharya and the great lineage of Gurus who have provided the interpretation to lead us to Satchidananda through these scriptures (Vedas-Upanishads, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita). The claim by “‘Historical & competitive Critical’ method that - for last four thousand years, Hindus are reading their scriptures wrongly and now the enlightened Western academics are providing correct way’ is the central project of ‘Modernity’. Dr Deshpande is glorifying such a path by arguing that Pandits were not respecting the likes of R G Bhandarkar because of his English education. It is not about covering the side of Pandits despite they opposed the new way of the world but it is to note that the tradition has been negated in the process. Our lineage of Gurus have interpreted scriptures in the light of six-Darshanas and have built a robust system of interpretations. It is misleading to keep propagating that the likes of Adi Shankaracharya missed the textual inconsistencies as against this 'modern' method.

    The Third issue is the relevance of the “Oriental” word now. It is not a question of just the name for the sake of it. During the times when BORI was created, it was the credible response of the Orient to the West, but in today’s time, when we as Indians have been able to experience the benefits and ills of modernity, we need to actively decolonize our thinking and eliminate the word. It’s a symbol of colonialism.

    There is an issue of - Aryans-non Aryans-aboriginals-alien races who degenerated Aryan Sanskrit - but it will be too long to address it here. It must be mentioned that Dr Deshpande has not recognized that the whole Aryans theories (invasion & migration etc.) are getting challenged now and the argument that everyone from outside brought knowledge to India and original habitants only degenerated it is not sustaining the ground anymore.

    It is important to study these German Indologists. After careful study one reaches the conclusion that they have robbed us of our tradition and colonialism has destroyed it to a level that we as today’s Hindus are not connected with the tradition anymore. The tradition of “Samanvay” expounded by Adi Shankaracharya and other traditional gurus has been replaced with contradictions, interpolations and doubts. The learned BORI needs to reconcile the path taken so far and make changes.
    Our scriptures have the capability to deliver ‘Shashvat Sukha’ - SatChidaAnada - which this ‘Historical & competitive Critical’ method is not capable of, so instead of reading our scriptures like history books with focus only on grammar, text and timelines let’s read these to gain true self-knowledge.
