  • It came as a big surprise when "die stem" the Apartheid regime's national Anthem was played before the match and it cause quite a political ruse afterwards.

      Beautiful? It has a specific verse in it for Afrikaners. It represented a 'white only' South Africa which is supposedly a republic. It's a disgusting racialistic song.

    First time the crowd spontaneously started to sing it; because it was not supposed to be played. It was a form of protest against pre-arranged agreement with the ANC. Then on instruction of Louis Luyt it was played to the surprise of every one. The crowd joint in and the ANC went ballistic.

      It's because rugby was hated by the ANC as a symbol of the oppressors along with die stem, but it was actually part of the white identity/culture and not a symbol of power over blacks to them. After this happened the ANC realized they should not get rid of them, and started promoting the "rainbow nation" concept instead. Therefore rugby came to be seen as a symbol of unity and reconciliation, eventually resulting in Mandela attending matches and die stem remaining part of the anthem

    What happened is that the ANC only agreed to the tour going ahead if a minute's silence was observed for the deaths of some people in nationwide violence the previous few weeks, and also for their no 'die stem' to be played because it represented apartheid. So the SA rugby union and govt agreed to that. Yet on the day, the silence was not observed as the crowd sung 'die stem' and then the stadium PA blasted out 'die stem' after the nz anthem. lol ...those were the days eh

    To me, this flag represents South African history and culture. You see the Oranje Blanje Blou, representing the Dutch Cape Colony and the Afrikaners' Dutch ancestors, the Union Jack to show the British Cape Colony and the English speaking South Africans, and finally, the flags of Oranje and Transvaal, showing their struggle for independence and self determination. There is nothing racist about taking pride in your volk, culture and heritage, and it's sad that it has to be seen in this way. And, for a personal touch, the flag to me represents order, when South Africa was stable. And the flag is simple, unlike the Modern Art of the new flag.

      @Alfa&Omega 00000 I doubt that. In all honesty I think that bringing back the pre-1948 voting laws would have been best (only educated allowed to vote, and those who owned property). There were millions of Bantu people who immigrated in the 1970s, and the Apartheid government did not provide for them, meaning they were easily brainwashed by Communists, leading to the current political situation in South Africa. The 5.2 million whites had the power to say no.

      they were all white, black people were not aloud in the stadiums in 1992. Please stop acting like white South Africans were the victims. I am a white South African and i have been blessed with privilege all my life because of the wealth of my family, wealth which was gained from my parents going to university during apartheid, something which black people were not aloud to do. I am guessing from your ignorance that you are an American. pre 1994 might have been scary for white people but they were only scared of losing their white privilege. How about you spare a thought for the 69 unarmed protesters that were shot dead with assault rifles by white South African police officers, many of them were shot in the back as they ran away and 29 children were shot. Why is it that you don't think of the fear black South Africans experienced, being oppressed by a government that only cared about 12% of the population. why don't you spare a thought for the 14 unarmed black people that were shot dead by South African police officers at the Nonzwakazi methodist church in 1985. or how about you think about the 35 people that were shot dead in march of 1985 while peacefully protesting the killing of six black people by the police. or maybe think about the 700 students that were shot dead by police during the Soweto uprising of 1976.

      rich? powerful?
      please... under apartheid, south africa was a wreck. this whole notion that it was this rich, prosperous nation is just that: a myth.
      the reality is that around this time (the rugby match in the video), the majority of the world refused to trade with them due to their apartheid system, nearly shattering its economy. this is their return match, as they had been banned from competing in any sort of world event whatsoever due to apartheid, but were allowed to come back as it looked like apartheid was on the way out. it should be noted they were nearly banned again after the events that took place in the video, with the fans not only singing during the moment of silence, but the person playing the national anthem when they were specifically told not to. the rugby union threatened to ban south africa for life if they tried that shit again, and they finally observed the moment of silence.
      they were an isolated, stagnant economy that had little to no signs of improving, and they had just lost the war in angola, lowering their stability and the faith in the government even more. if apartheid didn't end when it did, there would have been a very bloody civil war, with an almost guaranteed outcome of which that happened in my own country haiti, where the whites were genocided. it was bound to happen eventually... thankfully mandela took control and prevented that.
      south africa has *never* been prosperous.

      because the numbers didn't work in their favour. don't you think they considered all the possibilities? the writing was on the wall, and they knew that if it escalated to all out war, it'd be catastrophic for their population... so they ended apartheid. also should be noted: by this time, a lot of white south africans were *ALSO* heavily anti-apartheid, and this was clearly relevant when they chanted for mandela when he made his first public appearance in the return to rugby match in 1994.
      the whites would've lost... plain and simple. the incompetence of the defense forces was put on full display in angola, where they got absolutely stomped... there's no way they'd be able to contain the very, very sizable population that would've been the enemy.

Take confederate flag or nazi flag for example, they are all about hateful ideology. Old flag of ZA however was just a flag which celebrated a union that gave a birth for a new country. And there is no violence in the lyrics of Die Stem, it's a beautiful anthem and I'd hope that people would see these things.

    It didn’t cause a political ruse afterwards because it was the official (and only official) national anthem at the time. Nkosi Sikele Afrika was added in 1994, and in around 95 / 96 the two (Die Stem and Nkosi Sikele Afrika) were merged together, to form the current National Anthem.

    • @johnsMITHhhhhh88

      It was still the official anthem, but it was assumed it would be discarded after apartheid was ended. The ANC saw it as a symbol of oppression and it was agreed that it would not be played at this match and there would be a moment of silence instead, and the RSA flag would not be flown . The crowd brought their own flags and and sang themselves, and they played the anthem anyway even though they were not supposed to. For this reason it did cause a political crisis, and subsequent matches were nearly cancelled

    Rugby in South Africa is mainly an Afrikaner sport; it is central to Afrikanerdom and the Afrikaans culture. Die Stem is part of the culture, and were more so in 1992. Now South Africa is more of a multicultural country and the current anthem in five languages is more representative of the country as a whole, but don't take the Afrikaans verses out.

  • @McLook3

    @cunibert01 It was tricky at the time. The agreement with the ANC was that no Anthem's will be played. The reaction afterwards was immense. So much so that the Aussie test (Aussie and NZ were touring at the same time) at Newlands Cape Town the next Saturday was almost cancelled. It was touch and go or it was cancelled and it took some serious negotiations by both the Aussie team and SARU to make it happen.
    I'll post some video material on it soon which shows the Aussie dilemma at the time.

      Also this was in 1992 , there was a pre agreement with the ANC to not play this song during the match as apartheid was coming to a close, the crowd started singing anyway, and was elated after the anthem actually started playing where they joined in a second time.

    • @YuusukeOnodera
      @YuusukeOnodera 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The NZ anthem being first played in Māori and then in English was first in the 2000 Tri-Nations, during a Bledisloe test played at Westpac Stadium. Before that, the anthem was played only in English (apart from the 1999 RWC match against England, where a singer Hinewehi Mohi performed the anthem in Māori)

    It was sensitive time; they needed to stand firm otherwise they would never be seen/regarded as being in power. They reacted to show that they are not a gutless bunch and that they should be taken serious.
    How difficult is that to understand. It's like a teacher showing who is boss in the class room Use your brain.

    This was the catalyst for the Australian team beating the Springboks a week later-for those of you who know and love your rugby one Nick Farr-Jones was viewing this game alongside Michael Lynagh. He was absolutely appalled at the reaction the minute silence got from the arrogant dutchy yappie contingent. He ran practises that week and reminded the team of that moment-great motivation for them to beat South Africa in front of their home crowd-good one kippernookers!

    • @prodigiii712
      @prodigiii712 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That absolutely has nothing to do with Australia beating South Africa. South Africa was on hiatus for a long time before these matches so they lost both to Australia and New Zealand. Australians couldn’t care less about Black South Africans and Nelson Mandela.

  • @McLook3
    @McLook3  13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @MrSydneyKing. The old anthem was and still is a symbol of Apartheid. The agreement in 1992 during this match was that the old anthem would not be played. Fact that it was played a sign of disrespect. There is a verse or so in the new anthem as a sign of reconciliation. The old flag and the old anthem is a sign of disrespect to the changes and the new goverment almost like the Nazi swastika is something that is seen as perverse and a sign of clinging and promoting something that is seen as evil.

      @@videoboer Don't come here with that kak, I'm well aware of what apartheid was all about, it was not about seperate but equal. If that was the case how do you explain events such as the Sharpvillre massacre and the Soweto uprising huh. Did your 'Boer' grandparents have to carry dompasses and did the police whip them in the streets! So fuck off with that shit. Despite the state of affairs at least racist pieces of shit like yourself don't have any superior status in front of the law. So if you don't like South Africa, then fuck off back to where your forefathers came from

      Long story short boet, I am a white man, proud of it and any badge you stamp on me is your right, Ill take the racist one with pride and honor, I wear it every day of my life, and there is absolutely nothing you can do to remove that badge, its mine. You cry about this and that event, that is your right to cry about 50 years ago, and I will not fuckoff with any shit as this white man is too proud of his history and heritage. Oh, and lastly, I fucked off in 1994 and live in peace and harmony. Good luck my boy.

    They quietened down when the Wallabies said they were going to boycott them if they ever disrespected Nelson Mandela again and the Springboks had to go grovelling to the great man to get him onside. This was an absolute embarrassment and showed the greatness of Mnadela because all he had to go is say the word to the Australians (who were the world champions at the time an they would have been punched back into the wilderness..
