Yes he's a Te Aute School Boy their an Anglican Maori School 🏫 Sir Apirana Ngata attended there as well they have a history of excellence for education & rugby.
I remember seeing the first Kapa o Pango lead by Tana when I was 15years old and it blew my mind. It was all anyone was talking about school for the next week. In my opinion the best Kapa o Ponga ever.
Rico Gear is the absolute goat at haka in rugby, no one comes close to him, he knows the Reo, knows how to lead a proper haka, can pronounce the words and has that extra mana
The most chills I ever got was when Tana lead it against the Boks. I was in varsity, early morning for us. We knew it was on by the end of it. Silence from everyone, others woke up at that moment. The game was amazing as well.
I’m American and I’ve always admired the Haka dance. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen and it’s amazing how this old tradition continues to survive. And how all the people take it so so so so seriously. I mean they seem to have so much respect for it and it’s amazing. I have so many questions! 1. What does the sticking out the tongue mean? I’ve seen in so many times, it’s gotta mean something. 2. What language is that? It sounds so cool. 3. This was an ancient war cry right? So what happened then? Like does this happen to prepare for war or right before the war like to scare enemies or something? 4. Does each movement mean something? I mean they all look amazing together!
2) Maōri. The Indigenous Language Of Aotearoa (New Zealand) 3) The Haka Is Usually Done For All Sorts Of Events. Eg Weddings,Funerals, Birthdays Etc. In Terms Of The All Blacks Its To Lay Down A Challenge To The Opposition While Displaying Their Culture. 4) I Don't Know All Of Them But I Know A Few. The Ground Motion Represents Returning To The Earth. "Be One With The Land". The Lifting Of The Hands Means Lifting To The Heavens. "Our Dominance, Our Superiority Will Reing And It Will Be Lifted To The Heavens." The Slashing Motion At The End Means A Transfer Of Energy.
I may be able to answer the tongue question! I’ve seen other comments saying it is a display of dominance and meant to instill fear. Another comment I saw said it essentially says “we will defeat you and then we will eat you” (although I’m 99.9% positive the maori didn’t eat anyone lol)
Because our ancestors where Cannibals they would stick there tongues out at other tribes as if to say “we’re hungry” it’s pretty mad but that’s the history of the pukana 💪🏼
You should have seen some of the Hakas for first 15 rugby back in the day. Team doing the Haka and 500 guys from the school standing on the sidelines doing it with them. Epic.
I'm Welsh and my very first international game was Wales Vs the all blacks in 2004 and to see the haka live was always a dream of mine so spine tingling
American here. Love the Haka. I noticed that each one was slightly different. Does that represent different Tribes? Or is that something the team decides on? I find it fascinating how an ancient ritual like this has survived for so long, and is now used in sporting events in the modern times.
There are two main ones - Ka Mate and Kapa o Pango. Ka Mate is a Haka of the Ngāti Toa tribe which was used by the all blacks for 100 years. Its origins are from Ngāti Toa and not the whole of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and how commercial it has become has been seen as too far, particularly as Ngāti Toa represent only a section of Māori people. Kapa o Pango was written specifically for the All Blacks and was first used in the 2000’s. It means “team in black” and is seen by some (including myself) as a Haka more representative of New Zealand as a whole. I believe there are tribal differences to how the Haka is presented based on history and tradition though, not too sure what those are. Note: I am not tangata whenua Māori (Māori person). I am a first gen immigrant with South African New Zealand ancestry but have called New Zealand home for 21 years now (I’m 26). So what I say is based of my most likely flawed knowledge of Te Ao Māori. It’s a very special culture which I am continuously learning more about. You should come visit and experience it for yourself.
Liam, Piri, Umanga. ☝🏽 ngā tino toa kaihaka 🙌🏾🙌🏾 My favorites to watch lead the AB haka. Always exhilarating. But some of my very favs to watch perform the haka are Ali Williams and in these later years, Ardie Savea & Rico Ioane. Te ihi me te mana (The power & authority) that these men demand when they haka is fire!!! 🖤🤍
Piri for me. By no means qualified here but we were taught at high school to keep it slow with strong actions. Piri nailed that in 2011 and it struck that spirituality, fear and motivation into my heart. Think the crowd being Kiwi helped with the overall atmosphere. Honourable mention goes to Messam. Got those Tuakana vibes about him - amazing leader for AB’s, Sevens and Chiefs over the years
Before Buck Shelford you had a bunch of guys doing some weird dance flapping about before a test match , even many kiwis didn't understand it and its meaning and mana at the time....After Buck you had Men presenting a Haka for their nation. Buck you are the GOAT AB captain. we will always owe you. a debt of gratitude and love.
Piri, best on this list. Personally the Black Ferns do it best ,more passionate from everyone of the Squad, spirit animal level. Loved the boomerang respect too.🇳🇿
My 2 favourite teams on field at beginning of this video THE HAKA MAGNIFICENT 👏👏 Love the look on the Springboks faces facing these mighty rugby warriors with great respect 🙏 🫡 👏
I lived in NZ for a little while in my younger days, and while I was there a little 5yr old maori kid performed The Haka... He put everything into it, I could see the veins in his neck all popping up etc, and imho THAT was the best Haka I've ever seen
Love how the old school ones they all looking at each other seeing if they doing it right and in time 😂but love how it's evolved and now it's rehearsed and they know it inside and out I love the haka got lucky enough to see it live when they played wales which we lost lol

A boomerangs given by a pacific islander really
Was great always walk forward no matter what go to fight just like french
Piri Weepu is my favorite. Specially during 2011 World Cup. What a strong voice he had.
I can still hear Kapa O Pango from the final, I'll never forget his commanding voice and deliberate cadence
Couldn’t agree more, he was the very best in my opinion
Piri was definitely the best ive seen! Spine tingling even as a Kiwi.
His energy is unparalleled
Yes he's a Te Aute School Boy their an Anglican Maori School 🏫 Sir Apirana Ngata attended there as well they have a history of excellence for education & rugby.
I have absolutely no Maori heritage but the Haka awakens the beast inside I swear
Are u from New Zealand.
Same here! Every time I see it I get chills
Tana Umaga leading the first kapa o pango makes me feel like I could run through a brick wall. Like I could fight a dragon and win.
You honestly could no lie
I'm a proud Englishman but whenever I see the Haka performed by the NZ All Blacks it sends a shiver down my spine - superb stuff
There's something about Maori that brings out that primal instinct during the haka. Like a team that's ready for war.
completely agree
@@AdderTude It's almost like that was trhe traditional reason behind it...
Proud Englishman - aka "I'm not racist but..."
Please inform me about what there is to be proud about as an 'Englishman'.
I remember seeing the first Kapa o Pango lead by Tana when I was 15years old and it blew my mind. It was all anyone was talking about school for the next week. In my opinion the best Kapa o Ponga ever.
Tana's wasn't my favourite but it certainly was the best
Tana's my favourite, elite team there
UMaga was like a reincarnation of an actual warrior bro 😂
As a 1.94m 108kg Afrikaner, Liam Messam struck absolute fear into my heart. The goat imo
To anyone from NZ, what a privilege it must be to perform this. ❤
Rico Gear is the absolute goat at haka in rugby, no one comes close to him, he knows the Reo, knows how to lead a proper haka, can pronounce the words and has that extra mana
TJ and That Haka was Crazy Energy 🔥🔥🔥
The most chills I ever got was when Tana lead it against the Boks. I was in varsity, early morning for us. We knew it was on by the end of it. Silence from everyone, others woke up at that moment. The game was amazing as well.

@@samanthaleo2590I believe they actually were cannibals
Pukana (facial expressions) are used in Haka & Waiata (song) to emphasize particular words & to demonstrate the performers ferocity & passion.
TJ Perenara and that vicious slap rule supreme
Piri Weepu, Liam Messam and TJ Perenara are my 3 best.
Shout-out from Newcastle, South Africa 🇿🇦👍
As much as I'm not new zealand. I will always have respect for the haka
Umaga y Perenara son los Kaeas que más energía transmitían🙌❤️🤟💪
Something about Messams voice gives me goosebumps. Like a king who leads from the fronline
🙏🖤✨They beat the opposition even before the match starts 🖤✌️✌️✌️💪
A long time ago there was a U19 championship and the Haka leader took of his shirt and jumped in front of the rest of the team.

No one respects the haka more than we do here in Australia, such an incredible sight to behold but Piri definitely gotta be my favourite
Aaron smith is my favourite, just seeing the absolute ferocity coming out of those men, gave me goosebumps
I travelled around New Zealand for Four Months, it sure stirs up a sense of belonging!
All blacks makes rugby looks Beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Hail from South Africa ,Great respect, Amabokoboko
HAKA is soul howling. I proud of playing
As a south african the haka is oje the most amazing experiences...see you guys at ellis park
with their pre game war dance the abs are probably the most hated opponent to play against. mad respect
Umaga is the best
As a SA supporter,I have the utmost respect for the Kiwis. What they bring to the game is amazing
Wheres Hosea Gear. One of the all time great haka leaders
So many great haka leaders across All Blacks history. Perhaps we need a part two?
@@AllBlacks yes, we need to see Hosea
@@AllBlacksim sure all blacks fans would love a part two, especially featuring some of the less known names who have lead.
@@AllBlacksHosea for sure 👍
Native American (Apache). I must admit, watching this awakens the wild in me...loving it! 🤘🤘🤘
There is no way you can rank these 10 from 1-10... All are greats and had such an impact on the haka
I wonder if Reiko will be leading the next haka.
I reckon Ardie will do it
If I'm gonna die in battle, Tana or Piri would get me ready for it. Either one works for me😂
New Zealand: The Haka
England: Fannying about a maypole with handkerchiefs
Well, you can always have Morris dancing? Would that work? 🏴
Piri Weepu is my favourite Kaea. My favourite haka is the "Ka mate" which means "one will die"!
Tana Umaga has always reminded me of the predator from Predator That's a compliment
Piri, best on this list. Personally the Black Ferns do it best ,more passionate from everyone of the Squad, spirit animal level. Loved the boomerang respect too.🇳🇿
Just like watching General Maximus Decimus Meridius do Haka dance, amazing
Love it... such a powerful❤❤All respect to the Haka.
Ka mate will always be more iconic and epic than Kapa o Pango
TJ PERENARA LEED THE HAKA BRILLIANT
My 2 favourite teams on field at beginning of this video THE HAKA MAGNIFICENT 👏👏 Love the look on the Springboks faces facing these mighty rugby warriors with great respect 🙏 🫡 👏
as an Australian, the Haka sends shivers down my spine, good on such strong NZ ppl
Rieko is very passionate about the haka, you can see in his animation
Liam Messam and Tana umaga sound pretty similar with that raspiness in their voices
I lived in NZ for a little while in my younger days, and while I was there a little 5yr old maori kid performed The Haka... He put everything into it, I could see the veins in his neck all popping up etc, and imho THAT was the best Haka I've ever seen

Piri Weepu hands down! Was awesome to see!
Love how the old school ones they all looking at each other seeing if they doing it right and in time 😂but love how it's evolved and now it's rehearsed and they know it inside and out I love the haka got lucky enough to see it live when they played wales which we lost lol

Props to the Māori!
Aaron Smith what a player.
I think Aaron Smith is my favorite
Don't know about you folks, but I never want to bump into Kieran Read on a dark night!!! Or a light one for that matter! The man's a Unit!!
Umaga has the heart , TJ has the spirit , but Piri has the soul of The Haka
Piri Weepu..and by quite some distance. Honourable mentions for Tana Umaga, Liam Messam and Rico Gear
Doesn't matter who leads the Haka! Its the most awakening sound on the rugby pitch. Common you Blaaaacks.
Des frissons ♥️
I thought the 1973 haka would be in here 😂 they've come a long way
Springboks are patiently waiting 💪🏽🔥🔥🔥

Taine Randall No 1!
Saturday's Haka was dissapointing.
We as Boks respect you always. Even if we dig a bit lol 😅
Piri leads the best haka, his intimidation of haka is super interesting
Liam and Piri for me.
Hey All Blacks! Can you urge broadcasters to capture the sound of the Haka properly! These past examples sound great! Just not nowadays.
The answer is Tana Umaga.
Umaga is the one for me.
