This man and this game brought our country together. I was a young Afrikaner girl in matric and a waiter at Ellispark for a catering company that day. How honored was I to have seen this. And to boast...Joost van der Westhuizen was in our school just before my time. Magic Moments.

Never in a month of Sundays did I think a largely Afrikaner crowd at the home of SA rugby would be chanting Nelson, Nelson when Mandela strolled onto the pitch and then sing along with a black choir the united national anthem. Honoured to have been there, RIP Madiba, manager Kitch Christie, Joost vd Westhuizen, Ruben Kruger, Chester Williams, James Small, and from the NZ side, Jonah Lomu!

Yes I watched this like everyone else in South Africa. Mr Mandela brought tears to my eyes when I knew he was watching this game. But everyone what has happened to our Country since this Victory?
I remember our class watched “Cry Freedom” At the end of the film, the original form of this anthem plays and beautifully sung by a choir while the names of prisoners killed in prison were shown with no explanation for their deaths.
Nelson Mandela was such a special man, I just watched the movie invictus brought me too tears, I’m white british and we barely learnt much history about apartheid in school I couldn’t believe it when I realised it ended in 1994 my birth year. I watched a movie called recently Mandela, and skin 2008. It blows my mind, I have half black children who are Jamaican and I feel like I need to be knowledgeable on all these parts of history. That we didn’t learn in school, I’ve watched a few American ones Selma about Martin Luther King. And there was a recent U.K. series about Jamaica called the “long song” I’ve also been educating myself on other black history like the black kings and queens in Africa and the pyramids they built ect so my children don’t just see the negativity about their black African history. I’m trying x

In the 80s most whites were against apartheid already, in 1989 they voted the candidate that promised to end it (Frederik de Klerk) and in 1992 they voted in a referendum asking for apartheid to end too.

Well that section actually only means "we will live, we will strive, for you South Africa" in direct translation. I am a Boer and yes we were a very proud people, we held our ancestors and the nation they built in the highest regard; my people also had a deep belief in the old testament and thought the land we had was given to our ancestors by god. I can't really say that now though, a Boer without pride in his nation is like a turtle without a shell, I am that turtle.
If you're unwilling to risk your life for your country you simply don't deserve it and it's a matter of time before someone who does takes over, it doesn't take to be nationalistic, what it takes is the love of your own family and whole-heartedness to your next door neighbour ;)
Judging by his facial expression and how other commenters here stated about his mental history. I think He was depressed...and suffered anxiety. His future health record and attempted suicide indicates that this man's had an extensive anxiety problems rooted from his teenage years. He may have been energetic but deep down...He fears his future which caused him even greater sorrow. I kinda felt sorry for him, especially after the Rugby years...It does felt like he was abandoned by virtually everyone that even Mandella himself had to comfort him.

I think the current version is way better, this I can't hear what they singing except nkosi sikelela part and die stem which makes part of the current one, and I hear those two parts because I know them, if I didn't then I would know what they're singing, maybe the quality of the sound ain't helping as well. Either the African version of Nkosi Sikelela (pre 1994 struggle prayer/song) or the current national anthem, that's just my opinion.

There was a time that the anthem was simply playing Nkosi sikelel i'Afrika and Die Stem one after another, until in 1997 a new anthem was readapted.
