Magc-o-o-l is the recommended coolant for Magnesium Alloy engines, and it appears pink. On the other hand, Proc-o-o-l is suitable for non-Magnesium Alloy engines and has a blueish-green color. Interestingly, you can use either of these coolants in your V-Strom 2008. However, be cautious: if you mix blue and pink coolant, it will result in an unappealing brown color

This is super helpful and clear, thank you. For newbs, please note that he’s using the OEM prediluted (50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water) coolant. Don’t put in 100% coolant.

Pro tip (coming from an engineer) :
If you happend to not have a crush washer/copper washer or whatever you wanna call it (!!! but it HAS TO BE COPPER... NOT OTHER MATERIAL!!! )... you can just deharden it by geting it red hot - you can even get it red hot over a stove flame or one of those jet lighters, be carefull not to burn your fingers with the lighter- and then dunking it quickly into water so that it cools rapidly.
This works because copper is soft and most importantly it work hardens, that means that it's a good material to be used as gasket wherever possible, because it will take the shape (at a microscopic level) of the metals that it is sandwiched between and in that proccess it becomes hard and does not allow the screw to get loose (just like those ridged lock washers but without biting into the material).
When you get it red hot you allow the atoms in the copper washer to get all loose and maleable again, and then you quench it quickly so they remain locked in that position.
Of course, the best is to replace the copper washers as, after a few of these cycles cracks will begin to appear in the material and it will eventually not do it's job propperly or even fail. But if you're in a pinch and you don't have a fresh new copper washer... eh... I've been doing this while working on container ships... where a new copper washer was a kilometer's walk back and forth but I had my lighter with me :D.

very helpful vides. I followed your instructions to the T to service my 2011 V Strom. Probably the first time the coolant was ever changed; I bought the bike in 2017 and finally found thr courage to tackle this task. Your tutorial made it so much easier. I loved the trick with the funnel and the hose. Smart!

When you go for a ride to see how much the coolant reservoir goes down, Do you have to put the fairings back on??? Can you just ride without the fairings? See how much you have to top off the coolant. And when you're finally done, that's when you put them back on?

Good vid mate thanks 👍 Before I buy one of these bikes.....can I check the reservoir without dismantling all the plastics to lift the tank to see under the tank on a 2017-18 model? 🤔🤷‍♂️ Also how many miles would you do to do another coolant replacement? Many thanks 👍👍🤘

Hi Mike, Thanks for the videos! I've got my first bike, a 2005 V strom 650. I have a coolant leak coming down the left side of the radiator. I am thinking it is probably a hose / hose connection. My question is, do you know of a good video showing how to get the fairings off so i can access this? I hope I don't need to take the gas tank off, etc. I appreciate any input.
    Thanks,
    JP

Well hello JP! NW Adventure Rider has a Fairing Removal Video on a 2005!
      th-cam.com/video/WuLm3fs2nEg/w-d-xo.html
Shouldn't need to take off the tank if its leaking where you suspect it to be. You can reach down from the top and you should be able to feel the hose clamp, maybe it's loose...
Let me know if I can help in any way!
