How To Replace Your Motorcycle Oil & Oil Filter | DL650 Vstrom L0

A 5th episode of my Dr Vstrom video series about the Oil & Oil filter change on a DL650 Vstrom L0. Although a simple task, it is yet a most vital one that in my opinion has to be performed whenever the engine asks for it. Thus depending on the bike, the environment & the way you ride, the replacement interval might vary.
Be sure to study the temperature & oil viscosity chart of the manual & depending on the temperature range in your area pick the appropriate oil. The colder the area the thinner the oil has to be and the opposite.
The tutorial demonstrates on my DL 650 Vstrom L0 model but the steps are applicable to the entire Vstrom family and any other bike out there, so enjoy.

You should check the diagram in your vstrom manual and the temperature ranges in the area where you drive. Then, after knowing the temperatures you can select the oil (eg 10W40, 20W50, etc). My brand is Belray but its only my choice

I always replace the crush washer on the drain plug and I mark the outside of the filter wrench rather than the filter since I need to use the oil filter wrench to turn the filter two complete turns. Thank you for the excellent videos on a superb bike.

I give the new filter some new oil internally before fitting.
Obviously can't fill it but just a little saves a few seconds of the engine running 'dry' before the oil pressure builds.

That really depends more on the following factors:
1. How you ride. If you are more of a conservative rider (low revs) or really push the engine.
2. The type of oil you use, ie SAE 20 W is good for high temperatures but not for cold ones
3. The quality of the oil you use
4.The oil color, if it looks black maybe its time
In General I change them every 4000 Km with an oil filter but you can leave them on the bike up to 6000Km like Suzuki says as long as their color looks ok.

Hello Mike,
I have been asked before about that. I do not do anything special really. The only thing I can think of is that when that place gets dirty I clean it with a water wet wipe. I also wear the engine guard and my bike is always parked in the basement garage which is a completely closed room. Hope that helps :) .
I know that people clean the pipes with Harpic cleaning products for the bathroom, www.rb.com/brands/harpic/
but there was no need for me to do so until now.

You can find this online in many motorcycle shops including amazon. Make sure to buy the one with the long leg so it can get more accurate readings

Hey man,I'm about to replace the oil on my V strom. I used motul semi-synthetic the last time, but i found cheaper oil from Ipone. I'm thinking: oil is oil, if it's the right one it should be fine. The molul says something about esther, ipone doesn't. They are both 10W40 motorcycle oils. Should I go for the ipone?

Gerald Magdaong only If the oil filter codes are the same. For Vstrom and other suzuki bikes the code is 16510-07J00.

Hi Chris, I think its Gasket (12.1x16.2x3.7) but you can do 2 things. Either search for a store that sells vstrom parts and they will have them there also mentioning the size or if you are planing to replace the one you have, take the bolt and go to a store to buy one that fits the bolt.

Thanks. It all depends on many things such as the age of your bike, how well the engine breaking period was, the temperatures of your location, your driving style and the type/quality of the oil but if you dont mind the cost you can change it around there. It also wont hurt if you keep them a bit longer.

Γενικά η εμπειρία έχει δείξει ότι ποτέ φιλτρο της εταιρείας δεν εμφάνισε πρόβλημα ροής.
Αντίθετα, προϊόντα από άλλες εταιρείες είχαν θέματα. Το racing μην το πιστεύεις, είναι
Καθαρά θέμα marketing.
Το γνήσιο φιλτρο κάνει τέλεια την δουλειά του και μπορείς να το βρεις γύρω στα 10 ευρώ.
Εγώ βάζω μόνο γνήσιο φιλτρο χωρίς να υποστηρίζω την suzuki. Λαδια και φιλτρο αέρα
Βάζω αλλά. Σύντομα θα ανεβάσω βίντεο με ένα πολυ καλό φιλτρο αέρα που δεν θέλει αλλαγή
Ποτέ και ούτε θέλει καθαριστικά. Το αγοράζεις μια φορά και το έχεις για μια ζωή.
