  • Is the ANET ET4 3D Printer a solid competitor for the classic Creality 3 Pro? In this video, I review the ANET ET4 and compare it to other Ender 3 class printers. Included in this review is a feature by feature comparison and a custom Cura Slicer profile for the relatively new ANET ET4.
If you are looking for a new 3d printer for less than $250 this is a must-see review.
**** Please note this is a review of the ET4, the ET4 Pro is a significant upgrade with a dedicated auto bed leveling system and an upgraded print bed attachments.
The ANET ET4 was provided by ANET at no charge. The unit I used for the review had been opened and returned to Amazon.

5:23 - Glass beds can most definitely be uneven. CR10 glass beds are notorious for being uneven due to the clamping pressure from the clips on a potentially uneven aluminium bed.

thanks Irv fantastic fair review, full of helpful info from start to the very end not a minute wasted, hope that you can do something like this with the fusion 360 slicing capabillities (or how they call it additive manufacturing), who better than you could generates an easy "how to" and a fair valoration ? personally where i see potencial advantages in this is in "direct print" no need to export and other software.

@Popoi Pugito I just reread your comment and noticed that I did not properly address your comment. I DO NOT user auto leveling on the ANET A4. First I think auto leveling that requires a manual step and cannot be done automatically at the beginning of each print is ineffective. Second, it did not work when I tried.
I do not see this as a significant issue. Other printers in this price range, including the Creality printers do not have auto leveling. I found manually leveling the A4 very straightforward and I have not had issues with the print going out of leveling between prints. In general for my printer with manual leveling I check the leveling about every 8-10 prints.

I own one myself and can tell you that the autobedlevel with the sensor does work. When you go in to the menu you hit the autolevel button twice, once to select, once to confirm. The nozzle with sensor attached will then probe the bed on 16 different points. It will then show in the display how much your bed is off or on the 0.00 positions. You can use the wheels to adjust the corners and run autolevel again until everything is at 0.00 in the display or really close to that.. Then you don't have to tune it anymore and it will turn out great prints, print after print.

Great initial quality review! I got an Anet ET4+ as a Christmas gift. I've upgraded the bed to a magnetic one, as I was having adhesion problems with the glass bed, despite repeated releveling. I am still having a variety of problems like elephant's foot, warping, and just plain losing adhesion even after the print is 75% or more done. I've done some testing with a non-contact thermometer and have found uneven bed temperatures, even after preheating for over 10 minutes. Setting the bed for 60C will yield temps close to 60C on the left and front edges to 25C along the back edge of the bed, with a hodgepodge of temperature ranges at random spots. I can only imagine that's what's causing my adhesion/print issues. I was also disappointed to learn that Anet uses 3.8mm OD Bowden tube so unless I want to replace the hotend, I can't use Capricorn.

I changed the z axis homing on a friend s ender3 to home to the top/z max. It wears out the leadscrew and the pom wheels more evenly. You wont be surprised with artifacts on higher prints, when you don't often print tall. Although it might be simpler to ask it to go to zmax when a print is finished, if you don't want to mess your firmware

I am looking to buy my first 3D printer. Your review of the ET4 was impressive, but when I look online for prices/sources (Amazon, etc), I see that there are several variants - "X", "Pro", etc, not to mention wild variations in price for what looks like the same model. I suspect there are upgrades buried in there.
How do I tell which is the latest/best/updated model? Anet's own site is useless - it barely works. Please, Dr VAX, can you include this kind of information in you excellent videos, or can your channel do a model+variants comparison chart?
    Keep up the great work!

Hello sir, I'd like to know does the printer affects the tolerance in a model. I tried to print several fidget cubes on my Anet et4 and the joints never came out clean, they literally broke out into different pieces. But, with the ender 3 they came out perfectly fine with smooth angular movements. What could be the potential solution here?

Everything was good. Since three days ago the 3d printer is printing just an one speed to slow, I mean even though I set up in Cura slicer speed 60mm/s the printer is running at 10mm/s. I noticed that the extruder was fast in the motion LCD command and now is to slow. Could you help me? What was my mistake? Thanks for your video.
Actually I did not want another printer (already have about 20), but as I searched on AliExpress, I was stunned. There seem to be 3 versions:
ET4, ET4-X, ET4-Pro. All seem to share the same mechanic, but the ET4-X has no ABL and only A4988, the ET4 has ABL and A4988 and the ET4-Pro has TMC2208 and ABL. The difference in price, shipping from European warehouse is quite a lot:
    - ET4 (not available shipped from european warehouse)
    - ET4-X 167€ (actually about the same as the Ender 3 without pro at the moment)
    - ET4-pro 232€
This is about 65€ (about 71$) difference between X and pro. 167€ is so cheep, I could not avoid to buy it. As the ABL is a foil switch to put on the nozzle (about $2), only thing to do is changing the board to an SKR e3 mini (and maybe the display). This way not only you get the TMC for much less money (even if you may need another display), you also overcome the closed source / no full gcode-set issue.
I will report as soon as I have the printer and did the modification. It might become the best printer under 200€ this way. Quite happy about your video, as many people who want begin with 3d printing ask me for a low cost but powerful printer for beginners. The ET4-X might be the new answer.
From your video about capricorn published today Iknow the bowden being shorter than on Ender 3. This also is a plus, so this may be one of the few i3-style printers I do not need to change to direct extruder (but might change it to an Creality hotend to use capricorn or simular with inside diameter of 1.9mm).

You should change slicer's options regarding "what to consider as the center". E.g. in Cura go to "Preferences / Configure Cura / Printers" then select your printer. Next select Machine Settings. Check your build plate has the proper size. Make sure "Origin at Center" is NOT CHECKED. 99% this option is checked for you and that's the reason you have your prints crowded in the left corner.

Based on the photos on amazon it looks like they replaced that sensor with a capacitive sensor. The same sensor that comes with the labists ET4 (which is just a rebranding of this anet et4).
The capacitive sensor is horrible because it's sensitivity changes based on the humidity and temperature. It's right next to the hot end so you can guess this is rarely reliable.
I replaced the 12mm capacitive sensor with an 18mm inductive sensor so that it can sense the metal bed under the glass.
I went up to 18mm because a 12mm sensor cannot read the metal through the depth of the glass.
I had to design a different mount for it given the diameter differences.

A major difference is that the Creality uses standard Marlin firmware builds that are based on open source industry standards. I have not seen an Ender 3 V2 yet so I have no personal experience with it but the specifications are excellent. Without seeing it I cannot directly compare to the ET4.

@@MakeWithTech I have the v2. Two months working with this monster already. Among the new features, it has two manual tensors for the Y and X axis, so the belts are supposed to last longer. There is a recovery function in case of accidental shut down which actually works great. The knob for manual extrusion still has the problem of becoming loose after a couple of prints, however you can always print a new one if such problem presents itself. No automatic bed leveling. Cables are still a mess. Easy to mount and Has a drawer to store tools. Though, it is still very hackable and modeable like the other versions of ender 3. Out of the box is not "THAT" special (retail version won't detect if there is no filament extruding); Its real Power shrines through its versatility and potential, in both changeable parts and software.

Mr Shapiro (sp?), As a relatively long time viewer of yours I am growing concerned about you due to your not uploading a new video in over a month. As best I recall, you're in New York which is the current epicenter of the virus in the USA. I very much hope that you are well and have not aquired the virus as your age (unclear what it is exactly, but I suspect early to mid 50's) puts you at extreme risk of severe up to perhaps deadly symptoms. I'd be happy if you avoided acquisition of the virus and even happier if you survived it if you unfortunately aquired it.
Could you please make a new video even if it's only to assure we viewers that you are okay? Over a month, so I am extremely worried about you now. If you'd like the names of quality M.D.'s in NYC for treatment I can ask my adopted uncle Sheldon Weinbaum PhD if he would be okay with me providing you his cellular telephone number. He is a biomedical engineer and biofluid mechanician at CUNY, so he has a deep knowledge of the doctors in the city, making him a smart person to speak with if you came down with the infection. But no matter what, please post a new video if only to inform us you are okay.
    Sincerely,
    David A.W.

    • @monkeymanstones1
      @monkeymanstones1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Electric Boogaloo Just looked at his Twttter... he's not in NYC. He's in Illinois about 10 miles from Chicago (another place with a high infection rate, but substantially lower than New York City. I don't know if my uncle would be useful as a result, but perhaps he would be. Northwestern University & University of Chicago are extremely close and my uncle likely knows other physicists, biochemists, biomechanics and Fluid Dynamics professors there.. so just maybe I can provide him some useful information for which MD's to use to care for him to help him survive the virus if he unfortunately catches it. Perhaps a little much from me as I am one of the absolute most at risk of death if I acquire the virus. I'm a Type 1 Diabetic (DM1) which means I am severely immunocompromised as a result of Massachusetts changing insulin pump supplies providers (Diabetes who have higher blood sugars are more and more immunocompromised with every single increase in blood sugar immune function is substantially reduced & even more so the higher blood sugars rise - I really have to have my insulin pump back immediately to have any chance of Survival but MA rule & law changes have made them impossible for me to regain access to). So for me the virus will hit far more severely. In addition and to just about ensure my death, I am also physically handicapped by a breathing issue called "[Severe] Tracheobronchomalacia" which means I am completely unable to cough. Upon attempting to cough my posterior (rear) trachea (which isn't attached to my internal body) flops forward onto my anterior (front) trachea, blocking 100% of my airway. So a body which can't properly start fighting the infection followed by a complete inability to expel the fluid which builds in the alveoli of the lungs means without question, certain death. I haven't left my house in over a month except to go to CVS which will deliver to every single home around me, except my own (they claim it's a business but there has never been a business here and never could be due to it's size and minuscule parking). In addition no supermarkets will deliver here (12 miles from Whole Foods which claims to deliver within 15 miles... but not to me). It's sad to say, but I am almost certain to die myself (and I always believed I would die of colon or Pancreatic cancer as every single other family member has in the 70's to their 80's and absolutely no one in my family has even had a heart attack, nevermind dying from one). I really wanted to hit 73 but 31 years is a longshot with this virus about and everyone stealing every single N95 mask and all gloves so that those like myself with a medical conditions who cannot survive without them, can't get them. Darn panic buying!

Surely the basic fir any printer has to be it recognises gcode and it comes with a decent profile.
    I assume they tested it.
A lot to see if it worked so why not provide the profile, there must be one.
Unless they slapped it together and never tested it.

It is absurd, the Anet ET4 or any of the ET family cannot be compared to a Creality for the simple fact that it is not open source, it is closed firmware and this makes it a printer of too basic use, it cannot be modified or improve, you cannot change extruder, change motor steps, modify PID, etc. An ET family printer soon falls short, for what it's worth, better to buy an open source Creality perfectly.

    • @MakeWithTech

While I understand your point of view we all use closed products everyday. Products protected by patents, products protected by trade secrets, products closed to modification. in this case I totally disagree, in the case of 3d printers, a closed and open product has a lot to do with it, an open source printer is more likely to go a thousand times better than a closed source one, if you understand both printers You should not even discuss this, there are no different points of view, the reality is that.

What use can be made of a printer with the firmware closed? ? These are the strengths, you will see that there are more negatives than positives when it comes to closed firmware, best to buy an open source printer and if you want to improve in the future you can improve and will never be small in that regard without However, a closed firmware ... don't ask for much, it won't give it to you.
