AnkerMake M5 3D Printer: This is One Fast Printer!

  • This is a solid 3d printer that is extremely fast. My results while creating test prints were excellent. While designed as a plug-and-play 3d printer, it is still a mechanical device and requires maintenance and tuning. Several people in online communities are highly critical of what they see as quality issues with this machine. The challenges posted are common to all 3d printers and generally solved by proper device maintenance described in the video.
The hot end on this printer utilizes a PTFE sleeve, limiting practical operational temperatures to about 230C +/-. This is fine for PLA, PLA+, and TPU but is at the low end for PETG. People running into issues may be attempting to print at temperatures too hot for this machine which damages the PTFE sleeve. This is no different from many other 3d printers that also use a PTFE sleeve in the hot end. The advantage of hot ends using PTFE sleeves is the prints generally string less, which is a significant advantage.
To print at higher temperatures, replace in PTFE sleeve supplied with the printer with Capricorn XS tubing. Just order a full-size Bowden tube and cut it down to the proper length for the tube in the hot end.

This video has generated several strong comments, and I wanted to respond as the issues some people may see are addressable.
Over the past four years, I have reviewed/used over 20 3D printers from various manufacturers. Here is a summary of my perspective.
This is a solid 3d printer that is extremely fast. My results while creating test prints were excellent. While designed as a plug-and-play 3d printer, it is still a mechanical device and requires maintenance and tuning. In some ways, manufacturers do a disservice to purchasers by describing machines as plug-and-play. Every mechanical tool I have purchased, from woodworking equipment to 3D printers, requires that the user check the assembly and make minor adjustments before first use.
In my experience, any device shipped a long distance will likely need a "tune-up" before first use. AnkerMake has videos on its site showing how to adjust the belts and wheels on the machine.
For example, I have an Ender 3 S1 and an Ender 3 S1 Plus. The S1 Plus has an excellent all-metal hot end but strings significantly when printing. So depending on my model requirements, I use the S1 or the S1 Plus.
To print at higher temperatures, replace in PTFE sleeve supplied with the printer with Capricorn XS tubing. Just order a full-size Bowden tube and cut it down to the proper length for the tube in the hot end.
You can purchase Capricorn XS Tubing here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PS3NH82
In summary, my experience with the AnkerMake M5 has been excellent, but if you want to print at temperatures above 230C, I highly recommend you replace the PTFE liner with Capricorn XS. Using this printer at 260C to print with filaments requiring higher temperatures will likely be unsuccessful and frustrating. When used within appropriate temperature ranges for this architecture, I expect you will find this machine very fast and easy to use.

For the people complaining about the proprietary nozzles. I've been using my m5 almost non-stop since december and I just replaced the second nozzle.
You can get a ten-pack from Ankermake for 20 bucks I believe, so that's not really much of an issue is it.
And if you do a quick google search then you'll see there are already aftermarket nozzles available on the interwebs including stainless steel and hardened steel nozzles.

I bought my M5 in the kickstarter and got it in december. I've been using it almost non-stop since then and it's a fantastic printer.
What I really don't get it why this printer is getting so much hate online.
I'm sure the Bambulab printers are also great, but the amount of fanboys spewing hate under every video about the M5 is truly astonishing.
I personally enjoy my Ankermake M5 very much and it has gotten significantly better with every update.
So haters can go hate but for me this printer has been a very worthwile investment so far.

I probably miss heard you, but I just confirmed I can use the camera ai with gcode files imported from cura providing I import them into the slicer mode and then move to print from the preview mode instead of simply loading from the device screen. Adaptive layers plus the ai with a well lit set up for the camera + filament that contrasts with the bed color makes make me a very happy consumer

the 'problem' with bedslingers is that they don't scale up as well when it comes to speed in regards of the print size. like say.. at the end of the print you're slinging not the bed, but bed + 500g or whatever your very big print(tm) weighs.
in 20x20 usual prints it doesn't really matter that much.

So is it running Klipper? On my old Sunlu S8 I upgraded to klipper and my Sunlu which could only print at 60mm a sec now prints very wall at over 115m/sec with better quality. Also on my Neptune 2 I am easily printing at 125m a sec. So if the Anker is using Klipper I'm not surprised that that only is an improvement. And my older printers are using noiser motors, and a cheap extruder. These new printers coming out are really exiciting!

@Make With tech Hi, I noticed you said the V6 is a "Palette style multi color setup". Did AnkerMake tell you that? Because they're being very secretive about how it's going to work in their own Discord server. And the main selling point of the V6 is that it's supposed to be able to print multicolored prints without needing to make a transition/purge tower wasting filament in the process. And the Mosaic Palette does not achieve that, it does rely on trying to purge the previous color out of the nozzle between every color change..

    • @MakeWithTech

I guessed. If the slicing is precise enough you should not need a tower.

      1. It's actually an extremely wide range. I've seen it print anywhere between 190°c and 240°c fairly reliably. 240°c is actually what the current record holding speed benchy for a stock M5 in the speedboat challenge prints at. That said, if it SITS at 240°c it burns a tad, so 235°c is the practical maximum, but it is impressive it can be printed so hot.
      2. It seems to behave as expected, not slopping around or anything like that.
      3. I found the filament is actually EXTREMELY hygroscopic. If not dried/kept dry, it starts to string like crazy and pop after just like 3-4 days in the open.

The FLSun V400 is another good large format printer, but it is quite a bit more expensive. The V400 is also very fast. They did. Which is why the M5 makes a point of using an AWS instance in your region. That said, this is not a security device. Why should I care if someone’s knows what 3D models I am printing.
Would I use a cloud connected device in a secure location, no. Would I use it for printing hobby prints or even business prints that are not sensitive, yes.
If you prints are sensitive then do not connect to the internet and print offline - which is supported.

@@MakeWithTech This is a ridiculous argument. You now have a device inside your local network fully controllable by a (foreign, but that's a detail) company that may use it to attack other devices on your local network. Gone is the protection added by a firewall on your internet router. People don't seem to realize that any such "cloud device" is basically the equivalent of a Trojan horse. The same by the way holds for apps you install on devices that get onto your local network, so also there I dislike a printer that requires me to install something on my smartphone. This is similar to just inviting a bunch of strangers to stay in your house and hoping that there aren't any with bad intentions (or even just dumb enough to be manipulated by someone else with bad intentions) amongst them.

I got in on the Kickstarter for the M5 at 499 USD, mainly though, because of the promised V6 "Color engine" that will also function as a filament dryer for up to 6 spools (Even cardboard ones 😏). AnkerMake are presently (still) working on having it released, now by the end of this year (Yes, very delayed). But if it works as advertised, it should be well worth the wait, as it will make the Bambu AMS look downright stupid in comparison. And I've heard from semi independent parties in the know, that it _actually_ delivers on its promise: Multicolored printing _without_ purge tower! Meaning that _if_ the V6 pans out as planned, this combo should become the obvious choice for anyone looking to do multi-color prints. Well, anyone who doesn't want to flush money down a Bambu's "poop chute", and can make do with "just" 6 colors. 😅
It's not all rosy red though, and as Irv pointed out, I too got to learn from the AnkerMake Discord that the problems with the state the printer shipped in/arrived at my door, was unfortunately not a one-off. AnkerMake had, or even seemingly _still_ have, a quality control problem (mine was one of the last printers shipped from the Kickstarter batch).
Still, the issues I too encountered with loose belts and too tight V-wheels were fairly straight forward fixes that is something all makers will have had to deal with sooner or later anyway. So it's not the biggest deal in the world, just a shame that on AnkerMake's printers, at least for now, these issues seems to be, for a lot of their customers, much sooner rather than later.
All that said though, I can't help but being impressed with the printer. Even with the loose belts and too tight wheels it produced one of the better Kickstarter models I've seen, with great overhangs all the way down to 15 degrees, and only the 0,2mm clearance peg remained stuck in the model off the build plate, whilst the dimensions were spot on in all axis. Which is probably why it passed the "quality control" even in it's state. And it is these quality prints produced at even these high speeds that now makes it my go-to printer (out of my 7 others).
Something Irv did not mention in this review is that the 500mm/s max speed was actually not the max speed the printer shipped with. This is due to a recent firmware update that brought it up from "just" 250mm/s (and acceleration up from 2,5k to 5k mm sq). A Benchy of good quality that the M5 at 250mm/s spent 44 minutes printing, now only takes 30 minutes. And an OK looking Benchy it will finish in just ~17 minutes. And if the appearance isn't much of a priority at all, there are guys in the Discord server now doing Benchys in less than 10 minutes!
So the speed is there, and so is the print quality, even at high speeds. The only problem left now as I see it for potential buyers aside from AnkerMake needing to step up their QC game, is the price. It might be easy for me to be happy with my purchase at "only" 499 USD. But for 799 USD and for now only a _promise_ of a better "AMS" sometime in the future (which will likely be quite a bit more expensive than Bambu's AMS), I'd probably choose the P1P as "everyone" else seems to be doing as well. However, that picture did skew more towards a draw this Easter when AnkerMake had the M5 on sale for 599(!) USD. And at that price I think it deserves another look.
So, in it's current state there are a few things not great about this printer. But luckily they're all fixable. And there are quite a few things to like about the M5 like the ease of use. I'm not sure I should mention the noise though, which _is_ one other area where the M5 has a P1P beat. Because even if better, the M5 is also not really a printer you want to sit next to while it's working. People like to sneer at its and its likes' slinging beds. But it is these slinging beds' low center of gravity that allows them to not produce vibrations like a washing machine during the spin cycle. One might not want to be in the same room as the M5 while printing, but a P1P is something one ideally has a garage, or shed, for.
    😅

anyway acceleration would matter more in the example model they have for their claims than the top movement speed.
as per their website the 5x claim is that 250mm/s is 5x 50mm/s.

@@MakeWithTech Irv... I really like your approach and focus on education. You have a great channel and I recommend it to anyone who is new to printing. You helped me start my obsession with 3D printing. I think your channel would benefit from a Bambu review enough to justify purchasing one.
