    Good comparison video. Thanks for showing the details! I love classic Penn reels. Don't have a Surfmaster yet but i do have several Jigmasters. My favorite is my near pristine Silver Beach 99. Close 2nd is my 349h.

    Are there any other models that the Jigmaster 500 4:1 gears might fit? Thinking a 4:1 no.209 might be nice.

      @backonthebenchreels  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes. The same gear set will fit the Penn 112H, 112H2, 210M, 309M, 500S, 501 and Pro Gear Pacifica 2500. And the good thing about the Jigmaster is it's still in production so parts are pretty easy to come by. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    I could never afford either as a kid and now at 77 want one. I have to shop online and what should I look out for as to ones to pass up. I plan to pier fish, living on the se Florida coast.

      They are both good tools to have in the work box and parts are still available for both but especially the Jigmaster being that it is still in production. I find that it pays off to spend more money on a reel that is in better shape than one that is not. It will save you money in the long run. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    could you suggest a line setup for a 500? For beach and rocks

    • @backonthebenchreels
      @backonthebenchreels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't go much higher than 20lb mono. The larger the line diameter the less distance you will get. I would use either Stren Purple label or Berkley XT for the application you are talking about. Hope that helps and good luck!

    Tony did your surfmaster come with the aluminium spool if not where did you find it. Also any idea where to find an aluminium spool. I have one with the plastic spool. Thanks for the informative video

      Hi Alfred. Yes this Surfmaster came with the aluminum spool when I got it. MysticParts.com is a great source for these parts. 29L-500 is the part number. The spool also will fit the Penn Jigmaster 500. I would also recommend surfing ebay for this part or a Jigmaster 500 that has the spool on it. You may find that the price could be about the same and there are other interchangeable parts between these models as you saw in the video. Thanks for watching.

      @@backonthebenchreels thank you for your response I have extra jigmaster 500 spools and I will switch out the 250 plastic with a 500 aluminium spool. I hope you dont stop making your videos, it's nice to know there are individuals that still appreciate and enjoy using old penn
      reels like your self,heck I read that the penn 200 surfmaster was used for local (southern California) albacore fishing. Please dont stop making your videos us old timers enjoy them immensely Thank you Sir

      eBay get a jigmaster Newell spool holds more line and has tight tolerance on the sides so line won’t get pinched if using braid
      I use 350 yards 50# power pro with 0 problems u can add a mag brake on the inner side plate with washers.glue and magnets making a eddy current reduction in back lash

    What’s the point of that weight stack at the end of the handle ?

    • @backonthebenchreels
      @backonthebenchreels  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a counter balance weight. Those handles were considered standard equipment for those models at the time. Thanks for watching!

    One of the easiest reel to work on is the jig master 500 tons of them on eBay used for 20 bucks and 10 to ship
    I used them for everything deep sea cod haddock in 300 feet in the gulf of Maine ,fishing,striper chunk and trolling reel,flounder reel, mackerel anything up to 50lbs in my opinion maybe if it was hot rodded it could catch a 100lb fish in my opinion with braid and fresh drag washers
    The older model stainless guts are 10x better as the yoke in these reels get worn
