This video legit saved my life trying to swap my dad’s old reel from right-hand reel to left-hand reel. Just seeing it taken apart and put back together. Only after I had it all taken apart did I realize all I was missing was the tiny plastic piece that sets the handle screw. It had gotten stuck and wouldn’t come out of the main gear so I thought it was unswappable until I got into the guts of it. I’m picking up the hobby after he passed away when I was a teenager so being able to use his favorite reel is very important to me. Can’t thank you enough. -Alex

I love mine i bought it recently for my 12 foot rod i use for bank fishing. Its a great reel for the price. I think it does great when casting. I usually throw a 3 oz weight and i can get some incredible distance with this reel . Its definitely a reel you have to keep clean and oiled but like i said i can really get some good distance with it. I picked it up new for 70 bucks and am beyond pleased with it. I live in oklahoma but still like to use saltwater gear it just holds up better with time . I have another 12 foot rod with another saltwater baitcaster and its probably pushing 30 years old . Its made by Roddy. Model 131 and its been well used and it definitely has gotten beaten up throughout the years but its pulled in hundreds of fish and still works flawlessly. But i have to admit the penn is definitely smoother than it. Great video thanks wanted to watch a good video like this before i cleaned mine . Got some grit and dirt in it fishing over the weekend and want to clean and re lube everything

Good comparison video. Thanks for showing the details! I love classic Penn reels. Don't have a Surfmaster yet but i do have several Jigmasters. My favorite is my near pristine Silver Beach 99. Close 2nd is my 349h.

With calipers (both digital and manual) it sure makes the job a lot easier than using a ruler. Have a nice weekend! Tad

Great video, Tony! I love these vintage Penn Reels! I've restored a black 3/0 and a red 4/0 Special. Next up is a black 6/0 Special and a dark red 6/0 Special. Also have a new in the box Jig-Master No. 501. Do you happen to know the max. drag lbs. for the 113H Special?

Tony, One of my favorite reels growing up in Florida in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Give em regular maintenance and they give 100 percent. Fifty years later mine is still - like almost new. Tad

I just found a nice one for cheap. It seems to have abit of out play on the handle. Is that normal for this reel?

Tony, I like to heavily soak the bearing and pinion gear for a day or two and then use a slide hammer attached to the pinion gear nut. Using this method I have never had any distortion to the frame, spool or the pinion gear. Tad

The less maintained the reel - the harder to get off the bushings and bearings. Tad

Are you familiar with the DAM Quick SLS series of black spinning reels that were made in Japan in the 1970s? I have three of the five reels in that series. I honestly believe Shimano actually made those reels given how the internals snd design are identical to the Shimano MLZ reels also from the 1970s. At the very least these SLS DQ reels were made under license for DQ. I’m not sure that I care very much for these “Royal” reels. I much prefer my older DQ reels like the 550, 440, 330, 220, 110, and the 270 Super. You just can’t beat these earlier reels! Great video reflecting a lot of hard work! - Chris

Tony, I love these reels and after finally learning all the tricks for servicing them I’ve loved using them. I own two of the No. 6 and two of the No. 7. The only difficulty I’ve had with them is the size of the handles for surf fishing even though Abu designates them as saltwater reels. I have found these to be amazingly smooth with drags that are also amazingly effective. They can be a pain to disassemble until you learn all the tricks. Few vintage reels remain as popular as these do and few reels retain their value like these either. - Chris

Tony, I have collected all but the smallest of these Shimano MLZ spinning reels. You’d be very lucky to find any parts for an] MLZ Shimano! The ones I have are: 20, 30, 40, two 50s, and two 60s. Only the Daiwa 4000C, 7000C,and 9000C silver series reels are in any way superior to these MLZ Shimanos from the same time period of the 1970s. - Chris

NIce fix Tony. I get quite a few of these reels at flea markets. Got one two weeks ago - a Penn Long Beach 67 - drag, spool, clicker, line release all completely frozen but the reel itself looked OK. Took apart - degreased - cleaned - greased and oiled - Walla works and looks like new. Tad

These were nice solid reels. I had one, but found it too big for my use. I still have some smaller Avet reels.

Hi Tony. I have three Shimano rear drag reels that are somewhat similar to this Custom X 1000 except mine are much, much larger for heavy saltwater fishing. My reels are Shimano SSG7000 rear drag reels. They are very similar to the Shimano Custom X 7000 reel. These SSG7000 reels are the only rear drag reels I’ve ever used for saltwater fishing. These reels are 9” long and have 14 drag washers in them. I caught the largest fish I’ve ever caught with one of these SSG7000 Shimanos on the NC Outer Banks two years ago and it was quite a hard fight. Now I have a video of this so I can prove what I’m telling you. The Fish was a huge Stingray that was four feet from wing tip to wing tip and close to seven feet long to the end on the tail. It had a seven inch barb. My friends said it was easily 100 lbs. in weight but we never tried to weigh it before we got it back in the water. It actually got itself back in the water after I got it on the beach by breaking a 75 lb. rated swivel on my rig. I was using 20 lb. braid and he almost spooled me twice during a fight that lasted well over thirty minutes. These Shimano rear drag reels are some of the best ever made in my opinion. If I ever get the chance I’ll try to get a Custom X 7000 rear drag. Interesting fact, these SSG7000 reels have an all metal case and aluminum spools which do make the a little heavy but I still love them for surf fishing. I do have to ad that the sSG7000 Shimano is an absolute bear to service because of two quite small c-clips holding the oscillation block in place. It’s not that different from this Custom X except that the size of the SSG7000 make it much more difficult. Tony, you handled those clips quite well! Very interesting video Tony! - Chris
