From what I got from Nerrel's video, the N64 recompiler has the benefit of making ports of those N64 games in a drastically reduced time, over days or weeks compared to months and years. However, it doesn't detract from the decompilation prokects that have been ongoing. The purpose of the recompiler and the decompilation projects have a bit of overlap, but their purposes are a bit different. Decompilation makes it easier to mod and is generally intended for things like Ship of Harkinian where you can fine tune how you want to play it.
The recompiler puts out code that isn't as readable by people and the ports made from it are made more for convenience. Setting up the Majora's Mask binary that they provide and playing took only a couple minutes. With SoH, I have my set up looking a lot like the 3ds version, and it has a built in randomizer. I have other settings turned on or changed that make it quite different from the original N64 release.
But the Majora's Mask binary is set mostly just for the modern hardware. Higher framerate, higher resolution, widescreen, but other than that, it is mostly providing a vanilla experience. It's also less demanding than emulation. Ultimately it means that once Ship 2 Harkinian 2 (I seem to remember this being what they are planning on calling the MM decomp port) arrives, there will be room for both it and the MM recomp. the MM recomp also seems like they are planning on adding OoT as well and a randomizer so it's possible that it may get the combo randomizer in it, which would mean no longer needing to use Project64 (it's one of the only emulators that work with the OoT+MM combo randomizer). Regardless, one would likely pick that if they wanted a vanilla experience of eiither game and the Ship versions for modded experiences. Recomp also seems like it might add ray-tracing wihich might also end up getting added to the decomp ports as well.
So sad to see what Microsoft and Sony are doing in the game space. I really hope Nintendo stays clear from all of that. Fantastic news for N64 games. I really hope this means more N64 games will make it onto Steam. Deep Dive Studios as been doing an amazing job serving the N64 community with modern N64 releases on current platforms but if this means we will get even more N64 games re-released I have no problems with that.
Honestly if Nintendo released Mario Odyssey and the remake of Link's Awakening I'd sign up for/link my Nintendo and steam account - better than having to buy a Switch. Sadly Nintendo are more obsessed with how people enjoy their games and not with letting as many people enjoy their games as possible.

I swear I don't mean to be negative here..but.... Brother, you probably already l-o-n-g made yourself look like a _"A*hole"_ years ago, when you decided to start "bragging" about console services like a dork. Not to be a jerk to you or anything: but I highly doubt your younger than me (38) looking at your profile.... and I stopped childish console warring about whose video-game walled garden 'is better', shortly after leaving High School and entering the work force (so around 2005). 🤦♂
I can tell you that I have been on steam since 2010. In the last few years (since the start of this generation) I have become a daily user, and I _LITERALLY_ play on their platform *every single day* of the week. I even have a MMO I work on every morning, that I launch thru steam. I ALSO had terrible luck at the start of the generation (near launch), where I struggled to get a new console... and then when I got them: I bought TWO different PS5's that had issues, and then an Xbox Series X shortly after that had a bad NVME. It was so bad that after some heartache and hair pulling, I mad the decision to finally give up on consoles after 30+ years (since 1988)!
For this entire ninth generation my only 'console' is actually a 8-year-old handheld (the Nintendo Switch) that I barely use; I truly have gone exclusively PC for my gaming and emulation. So you would think I am a PC elitist right? Nope. Even with what I said above: I would never defend Valve or get in petty flame wars with console people over PC. I don't care which is better... and to be frank, neither is - they are ALL ticking time-bombs (on PC it's thanks to MS and Windows). PC and Valve are just a platform to play my videogames, and it's as flawed as any. Yes PC currently fits my distinct lack of funds for new games, and my hate of walled gardens... but every single week, I wake up expecting to see something scummy in the news about about my platform. And sure enough nearly weekly there is some issue, with right now being wide-spread intel i9 failure drama they wont take responsibility for, and ASUS being anti-consumer. 🤷♂
I never forget that Vale is not my friend and they do not have my blood oath. While I like their service - in the end of the day 'these are just videogames', and even ASUS (my motherboard), AMD (my CPU), Nvidia (my GPU), G.SKill (Ram), Cooler Master (my case), Corsair (Keyboard & Mouse).... none of these companies are my friends either. These companies sold me the peripherals and the parts that make up my gaming setup, but at the same time: *they made me **_PAY THEM_** for access to that!* Had I not possessed the funds at the time... then I would probably be playing with a $1 pack of poker cards in the floor, or doing yard-work for my enjoyment. 😢
If you must PAY for these services, then why act like they did you any favors? Why brag that a online service which costs them very little of their total revenue, which is free on other mediums.... which you can be kicked off of...banned without provocation or explanation... your digital games removed (sometimes, like recently without knowing)... your ability to access the multiplayer of a title that YOU already paid a lot of money for removed (bricking the purchase)....and you are prevented from buying games cheaper from other stores on? Why plant your flag for that? It isn't 2004. Online stores and connectivity thru a platform, now hardily costs anything to upkeep: it's usually even in the companies own interest to have a robust infrastructure that is accessible so they can sell their digital goods and facilitate these onlines-games-as-a-service.
They no longer have these online services as a begrudging 'extra' for those who want it, which they need paid to maintain.... I mean, the amount of money Sony makes just from their cut of GTA online purchases is unreal, with just one week of Shark Card purchases alone could keep the entire PSN online service up for a year!💰💰💰
Why feel like they are doing you favors for extorting money from you, just to access the games you already paid $70 for... to play online, when its free literally everywhere else? It's 2024: Sony makes all their money from online purchases, digital sales of multiplayer games, and Micro-transactions.... if tomorrow everyone boycotted PSN and refused to pay for it, Sony would just make it free and move on - the fact that a sizeable amount of people are foolish enough to pay access to basically a cheap resource they already where going to need to facilitate for their business (and then give PR for it).... is the icing on their cake.🍭
Why give them free promotion out of your mouth every week as a ground soldier in a fan war they could care less about? They do not even pay YOU for the PR. No company deserved that from you. These guys pay young PR reps a lot of cash for less devotion than you are exhibiting when you brag about these things online, and being evangelicalized on behalf of their brand. So I have to reiterate: _"'they'_ [never made you] look like an "A*Hole [for] saying things"... *YOU* did when you chose to say those things to other people.
If you _'play stupid games, you win stupid prizes'_ - trust me, I know this all tho well myself (I'm a chief screwup). Best to take the L and learn from it by not repeating the think that made you look bad! 👍
Yeah I'm probably never going to buy another microsoft or sony console again. Seems like they aren't even gaming companies anymore. I got game pass but as soon as something better comes out I'm switching. They are so out of touch with their customers.
Now if we can get a recompiler like this for all N64 games, along with PS1, Sega Saturn, and all other retro systems, that would be amazing. The future is upgrading retro gaming while leaving this dying AAA industry (at least MS and Sony) into the past.
The Recompiler already works with multiple N64 games. It's just games with Micro Code like Indiana Jones that won't work. Also Rocket on Wheels works with the recompiler.

Wow. I wonder if we can speed up games that have slowdown issues even on native HW with ports. That would be great. Command and Conquer 3d comes to mind for me and of course Bomberman 64 as well
I hope this new port of Majora's Mask doesn't take away the Ship of Harkinian developers from wanting to make their own version of a Majora's Mask decompilation port.
Excited about the Wiseguy porting tool... yet to see if there are plans to make Android ports from it (Win and Linux are the two ones discussed so far), and would love to also see RetroAchievements ported into the tool so that it picks up on the game being ported and adds achievements to them.
I think this Zelda pc release was based on a bunch of ROMs that got stolen through nintendo servers which was the database to the code. I think there are about 50 games or more that are almost decompiled now or almost finished. Perfect Dark PC is done and I know Golden Eye is close to finish. Look for the list online to see what games are going to be decompiled.

The Point is, that Hi Fi Rush was not a little Game. It has like 5 Years of Development so it was eventually too Expensive. And even that the People Think it was a little Game show That it was not Enough. But i Realy Wondering where all the Games that Microsoft Wanted to Came out. They lost all Chances to do Use the Massive Rare Library after the 360. Very Sad.

i hope old companies rerelease their roms as steam games as emulation is fine but not my preferred way. pc ports opens the doors to extreme levels of modding. making pc ports is the best way to preserve these games in a playable way.

Hi Fi Rush sold like complete dogshit. Game Pass is not profitable and is eating away heavily at potential sales on Xbox and PC games specially those that release there on day one. I can see Machine Games being the studio getting shitcanned next when Indiana Jones doesn't meet sales expectations and considering how awful their last 3 Wolfenstein games were.
Microsoft did Sarah Bond dirty by parading her out there. The only thing missing was the laser sight pointed at her head as she was answering questions. I am sure she would be a great leader if she had actual autonomy not muddied by short-term shareholder interests.

I will never understand the love from majora‘s mask personally, I like part two on the NES better at least it had some kind of flow to it not save. Make sure you save it or everything you got is gonna be gone. I was actually mad when I received that as a gift from the N64 when I was a kid it was like a really crappy expensive DLC before DLC was a thing.
Sounds like a skill issue. MM is great. It's a game where you can always make progress at your own pace. Rewinding time lets you keep major items you had, and any owl statue you activated will stay that way, so bit by bit you can make it through the game. But as you learn the game and know where things are, on repeat playthroughs the game can be really fun to maximize what you can do in each cycle. The structure and the length of the game make it one of the most highly replayable Zelda games. And then there's the world. Because of the 3 day cycle giving most characters a schedule, it gives a feeling of being more alive than most games at the time.
