6:20, I would say that One Dark Window is romantasy and it's more New Adult (or maybe upper YA) than YA. I also found the magic system to be really unique!!!
I vaguely remember that first Bone Witch book. My general memory was that because it’s told in alternating timelines by a newish author, it felt a bit uneven. The flashback chapters were packed with descriptions of what clothing Tea was wearing in virtually every scene and the present-day chapters felt like they were stretched out to line things up for an admittedly exciting conclusion. I think it’s worth a revisit to see if that first impression bears out. Oh, right: that Bethany Jacobs series! I keep meaning to get to that (as well as The Empire of the Wolf)!
I loved the shepherd king duology, never read anything with a magic system like this, I don't want to spoil anything about how the cards work but I do wish I could collect them (minus the magic of course lol) . I would say it's romantasy because the romance is heavily present but the magic/curse/main character's journey it's still the main plot. The will of the many is also in my list, I've seen SO MANY people talking about it. Hope you get to all of them next year, Sam!
Fun fact about the bone witch is that it is based and inspired by the mangkukulam, it is Philippine mythological witch doctor! Although they have a bad reputation for harming people who did them wrong, they're widely recognized in Philippine pop culture!
I remember being a bit meh on the bone witch, but the next two books more than made up for it. The last third of book 1 definitely hooked me to the rest of the series
I liked Justice of Kings, but was a bit disappointed, because it got soooo high praises that it didn't live up to my expectations. This year I read Tyranny of Faith and LOVED it! It had its flaws, but I still enjoyed it a lot! I plan to read Trials of Empire next year.
I really liked The Will of the Many especially the last 100 pages with the last 4 being amazing!! I thought the first 150-200 were a but long but still interesting. One Dark Window is sooooooooo GOOD I really liked the second book too. So good!! You’ll love the cards they are cool. Yep, Children of Time has spiders.
There are so many series I wanna start in 2025. I have a good amount of re-reads I want too, like Fifth Season and the Dimple and Rishi novels. The big ones right now are: The original Mistborn trilogy, The Dreamblood series, The Earthsinger Chronicles, and Iron Widow.
