  • The Egyptian people are AMAZING!
For our first day, after a lengthy search for a Starbucks that was actually open, we walked from the hotel along the Nile to Tahrir Square. Fair warning-once you start walking, you have to let yourself go to the sights, the smells and most importantly, the sounds. The traffic is everywhere and finding your way across the street is no small endeavor!
Our target in Tahrir Square was the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. Over 100,000 Egyptian artifacts, including the Mask of King Tut. The old building which you see in this video is equally stunning from the outside. The new museum ads a modern twist, while still keeping a classic feel.
Once we finished at the museum, we walked to a place for some food, where we were stopped on the street by a man named Mohammad. He started a conversation with us about New York City, and then recommended the same place for lunch. Since there was no place to eat, he recommended we take it to his favorite “coffee shop”.
Mohammad took us to a perfume shop where we were shown a lengthy presentation of “the best perfumes in all of Egypt” to buy. This is a thing that happens to tourist in several countries. I recall it happening in Turkey, as well as Jordan. Someone will strike up a conversation with you, and then make a recommendation of something that they will take you to, or tell you that your destination is closed, so that they can take you somewhere else. What they are actually doing is leading you to a shop where often you will be made to feel as though you need to buy something. We were with Mohammad for 45 minutes before having to make up a fake appointment to get out of there. I want to be clear that they are in no way mean or nasty, but become pushy when you are insistent to leave. This was the second time this happened to us in the first day in Cairo, and it happened nearly 3 times more throughout our trip. Be careful of who begins to talk to you, and if you’re not in the market to shop, do not go to where they want to lead you. Again-friendly but definitely with an agenda.
Once we escaped the perfume store smelling like 97 different fragrances, we returned to the hotel and ate the sandwiches that we had purchased earlier, before deciding on a place for dinner. We ate Lebanese food for dinner at a great restaurant called Taboula, where we met Sofia who would continue our journey with us the next day to the Pyramids!
Stay tuned for the next video where we walk around Cairo, and head to the Egyptian Museum to see the Mask of King Tut!

A very important thing while crossing the road is that don't ever cross in front of a bus or a van or a big vehicle because you can't see what is coming. And welcome to Egypt.

I saw the moment you're referring to, and I agree! I had to wait because I couldn't see what was beyond the bus! :-)

Thanks Ahmed--he was very nice, just a bit pushy and wanted to make a sale. I suppose you learn as you go and I knew not to get invited back to a place for lunch. :-)

As an Egyptian, I can confirm any negative experiences you had are more often than not simple one-offs. Trust me when I tell you that we're a down-to-earth, strongly bonded people doing what we can. Some are more traditional than others, so that's why you get funny looks if you walk around town with a camera

I totally agree with you, which is why I was careful to say that the experiences of being dragged into perfume store and papyrus sellers were not nasty AT ALL. The people were very nice, it was just an inconvenience and a waste of vacation time. The people in Egypt are amazing, to be honest. I fully understand why they want me to buy the stuff, I just didn't have a need for it, or room for it in my suitcase. :-)

Well Edo, I hope that's not entirely true, but everyone is out to get a buck, and that's probably the same for several places. :-/
