    Thanks for this nice in depth review. I am convinced by the Vessel screwdrivers because of the JIS tip. They fit JIS, Phillips and Pozidriv as well, which makes them very versatile. Screwdrivers are neither chisels nor pry bars if you want them to last for a long time.

    You also have to consider the price. Snap On 10pc set is $204.50 and Vessel 10pc non-slip set is $129.90. That's about $75 difference, or 36% more for the Snap On. I think you got it right when you said, using a dedicated tool is better. As a screw driver, the Vessel is an excellent driver.

      You’re right, Laribee. I showed the plastic Vessel that I have, but I don’t have a full set. So I did most of the comparison using the wood compo set. Thanks for your suggestion.

    I use Matco witte screwdrivers in the job for over 20 years on the same set. Only had to replace the #2 Phillips after the tip finally wore out.
    I also tried the snap ons just like these. They never did grip the screws as well and the Phillips tip was wearing fast so I had it replaced under warrantee and dumped the whole set.
    The wittes win hands down no competition.
    Now the older snap ons with the black and red handles and previous black handles were good.

    I e got the tri lobe SnapOns as well. Great screwdrivers. Got a friend that bought the Vessel Impacta (one you hit and it turns). He likes it, said it was a good buy for $12 (IIRC). He also has a set of Wera that he got on BF a couple years ago for a good price.
    I saw a video where someone mentioned that there’s a rumor goong around that Mac is working or coming out with RBRT screwdrivers. If that’s true, I’ll definitely get those.

    But for me, I really dont like screwdrivers with this crookbacked triangle shape, they feel so uncomfortable to work with... a screwdriver must be nearly round.

    This isn't an either/or kind of thing. This is apples vs oranges. Buy the Vessels for JIS, working on Japanese cars/trucks/motorcycles. Buy the Snap-on for Philips and anything else. The Snap-on set isn't going to work for JIS cross type fasteners. The torque wrench test is pretty useless. A torque wrench doesn't measure the twist of the drive. Torque wrenches measure the force of pull on the handle. Screwdrivers are screwdrivers, not a prybar, even if you use them as one. All that shank has to do is prevent twist while removing a screw.

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey MrSubaru, thanks for your input. I agree 100% that for JIS, Vessel is a must. My original Vessel drivers cover that need. The torque wrench test is the best I could come up with to test my ability to grip each driver, sorry that didn’t come across. As far as using (abusing) screwdrivers by prying with them, you’re right they are not made for that, but I do it anyway and the Snap On set is more forgiving.

    • @notsure7874
      @notsure7874 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can pull on a digital torque wrench from anywhere on that handle and get the same reading from a bolt you just torqued "the right way". By applying rotational force while the handle is fixed, you are applying force to the handle. That test might not be tenths of an inch pound accurate, but it's accurate enough for the purpose.

    I love the Snap-On Instinct handles, but the price is nearly always a deal-breaker for me. Vessel make great screwdrivers, and if you need the JIS drivers, then Vessel is really the way to go, at least for those specific drivers.

    Good video. I know this video is a year old but I was disappointed to see the oily hand test wasn't tried with bare hands. The vessel works by having a soft and porous handle that binds to your rough hands. Wearing gloves completely defeats the purpose of a wood/wood-composite handle. Vessel promotional videos showcase these being used without gloves. As does AVE video on the vessel's screwdriver.

    At first, I was going to go with the vessels simply because they were JIS, because ill be working on Toyotas. But now, it seems like the Snap On has more advantages that outweigh buying JIS. I have a 20 year old set of Snap On screwdrivers, and I love them. Plus, the vessel 3 year warranty isn't long enough and the warranty process seems complicated. Snap On it is! (I wish snap on made JIS drivers)

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, if Snap On made JIS, I would add them to my toolbox for sure. For now, the original Vessel will have to do. As for the wood compo set, not sure what I’ll do.

    • @notsure7874
      @notsure7874 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just bought a set of Vessel Megadora drivers. Not the impactas, or the tang thru - just the regular blue plastic handle drivers. It was just under 70 bucks. A few minutes before, I was trying to order a set of Snap-On drivers, but they're backordered. I used to have the old style hard handles that weren't triangular, and I LOVED those drivers. You could put insane torque on them, and they wouldn't strip heads. I can't really justify tool truck brands for most things, especially with the lower end tools getting so much better - but I've never had a screwdriver in my hand thats the equal to the Snap-On. I was going to order the new Instinct style hard handles because they're a little cheaper than the old style, and they seem like they're improvements - I just hate soft grip drivers (they were all soft when they first came out). Another reason was the old style hard handle sets don't come with stubbies anymore. They did in the 90's ...
      But the Vessel changed my mind. It was over 100 dollars less, and I have every expectation they'll be the equal of those snappys. If not, I'll buy the snap-ons later. I'll be getting the long snap-on drivers anyway. The JIS tip, with the serrations in it - I think they might even bite harder than a snap-on in a phillips. I've seen some real world testing that suggests that to be the case. Wear is another thing - snap-ons just don't wear out fast. All the other brands including a lot of tool truck ones just get damaged so easy by soft screws even. If the Vessel has similar wear characteristics to the snappy, it's a clear winner.
      I used to use the snap-ons as prybars - Americas favorite prybar! but I never bent a tip on one. I snapped a couple of them, but that tells me they're very hard - which is why they don't wear out. They're not super brittle either though, they're very tough. I always use small prybars or crappy old beater drivers for that now, so its not so I probably wont find out soon.
      I haven't worked on cars professionally since 2005, and I had no idea there were JIS screws - but if there were back then, the Snap-On didn't really have any trouble with them, but some testing I saw all seemed to show that the Vessel was every bit as good or better than the snap-on when it came to rounding out those - and even phillips screws, and that's what I mainly need a driver to do. Flat heads - I don't want them to bend and turn into "S heads" from torque. Snappys never did that to me. Literally every other brand I've had that happen. But we'll see ...

    If you want to get a superman grip on a hard handle screwdriver, put on some latex gloves - nitrile doesn't really work, has to be latex. Then - now stay with me here - get some oil on your hands. Then - wipe the oil off. That latex glove will now give you the kung fu grip on that screwdriver, or an oil filter. It sort of makes the glove surface a little tacky. I can get a better grip on a hard handle like that than I can get on a soft handle with bare hands by far.

    That snap on definitely bent in the pry bar test, at least it looked that way in the close up. Don’t get me wrong, I’d take that snap on any day of the week, it is definitely a beast, in fact it surprised me how little deflection it had. When you let go of the bucket I thought for sure it was going to continue traveling at least another inch down but it just stood strong so it definitely came as a surprise when you did the close up and it looked like it had been bent.

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The fastest way I know of to tell if somebody knows tools it's so look at how they use tools and the condition of the machines they maintain. Putting the soft handle of a digital torque wrench in a voice is the opposite of how that tool is designed to be used. There is a shear discontinuity at the working end to the jaw, not centered in the grip area of the handle; the readings are erroneous.
    Anyone who rolls tools on a car hood doesn't care about that car. It's worse if the car is theirs.
    I'll assume that a professional mechanic wouldn't risk any damage to a customer's car, which makes this reviewer an amateur and/or that's his car. The underhood condition removed any uncertainty about how much he cares about tools and machines.

      1. I have several cars I care about that I really don't care about scratching the paint on. My race car is one of them. Pull the dipstick on it and tell me I don't care about it. It gets oil changed at single digit mileage intervals. I have cars I'd choke you if you looked at it funny too. I have other cars that I don't care too much about too.
      2. If you were talking about a beam deflection torque wrench, you'd be correct. But that's not a beam deflection torque wrench is it? Neither click type nor digitals care one bit where you grab it from, or how you grab it. I've tested that theory many times always with the same result.
      3. I wouldn't do that to a customers car, but again - maybe that's a car bound for the junkyard. Maybe its his kids shitbox beater. Maybe ... you make a whole lot of assumptions, and I seem to remember a saying about assumptions...
