    These are great. My Brazilian Portuguese is a bit rusty (my written Portuguese is terrible) - even though I had three years of lessons and visited Brazil three times. But having the subtitles, and the fact you speak slowly, makes this a really great way to retrain my ear :)

    It's interesting that she says most of "us Brazilians" are of recent immigrant heritage. There's a very particular perspective there. In fact, the majority of Brazilians are Black or mixed African descent - not immigrants. And, of course, the Indigenous peoples of Brazil are not immigrants either.

    Virginia- is there a difference in when to use visitar vs conhecer? Also, do you already have or do you plan on creating a course, including maybe video chat sessions, where you work with people to make them become fluent? I have a very hard time understanding people speak another language, even if i am confident in my own speaking.

      Also, i dont understand the verb aproveitar. How do i use it? What does it mean? My friend frim brazil says it means to do 2 things at once, i dont understamd. I saw you translate it as to take advantage of

    • @SpeakingBrazilian
      @SpeakingBrazilian  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Olá Austin. "Visitar" means "to visit". "Conhecer" means "to know" or "to meet", and it is used to talk about people or places. We also use this verb to say you've been to a place, so you "know" that place. In this case, I usually translate the verb "conhecer" as "to visit" or "been to", because is the way people would say the same thing in English. For example:
      - Você conhece o Brasil? (Have you been to Brazil?)
      I do have an intermediate level membership site where I help students to become fluent. We meet once a week for a conversation class via Zoom. Enrollment is currently closed. You can add your name to the waiting list here:school.speakingbrazilian.com/p/academy

    • @SpeakingBrazilian
      @SpeakingBrazilian  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      "Aproveitar" can have at least two different meanings: "enjoy" or "take advantage". For example:
      - Aproveite o seu dia! (Enjoy your day!)
      - Ele se aproveitou da dela. (He took advantage of her).
      - Estou livre esta tarde, então vou aproveitar para lavar a roupa. (I'm free this afternoon, so I'll use this time [take advantage of this situation] and do the laundry.)

    • @MORADADASALMAS
      @MORADADASALMAS 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Austin visitar means to go to another place to sightsee the landmarks of a place or to meet/see someone. you can also use the verb conhecer to mean: : " learn about, to meet, to experience something . to discover etc all in that sense.
      for example: Eu conheci um novo método para aprender matemática. ( i learned/ discovered a new method to learn mathematics. )
      Eu conheci uma garota linda hoje no meu trabalho. ( I met a beautiful girl today at my workplace)
      Eu conheci a Argentina/ Eu visitei a Argentina. in this case they both suggest going somewhere, and they can be used interchangeably.

    Virginia i am a big fan of your channel and have watched dozens of your videos. I would be very interested in learning about non verbal communication, gestures, mannerisms, etiquette, etc. In Brazilian culture. For example, do Brazilians eat with fork and knife as Europeans do or like Americans? When introduced to a Brazilian woman do we shake hands, kiss on one cheek, both cheeks, hug??? Do I bring food or drink as a gift if i am invited to a Brazilian's home? What do you say or do if someone sneezes, coughs, yawns, ? Do Brazilians eat pizza, french fries, hamburgers, hot dogs with fork and knife, napkin, bare hands? What gestures are rude or offensive to Brazilians? Any advice appreciated. Obrigado.

    • @SpeakingBrazilian
      @SpeakingBrazilian  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Olá! Infelizmente, todas as grandes cidades no Brasil são perigosas, mas se você tomar cuidado é tranquilo. Eu já fui ao Rio dezenas de vezes e nunca tive nenhum problema.
      Recomendo que não ande na sua com seu celular ou câmera fotográfica na mão. Evite andar sozinho à noite em ruas pouco movimentadas. Nunca deixe suas coisas sozinhas, por exemplo, não deixe sua mochila na areia e vá tomar banho de mar. Evite transporte público à noite. Não use transportes públicos não credenciados, como vans, por exemplo. Dê preferência a ônibus ou metrô (durante o dia) e taxi ou Uber (qualquer hora).
      Com relação a regiões perigosas dentro da cidade, eu recomendo veementemente que você não vá fazer turismo em favelas. Favelas são lugares extremamente perigosos.
      Meu lugar favorito no Rio de Janeiro é o bairro Leblon. É um bairro lindo, tranquilo, com praia tranquila e bons restaurantes. Outros lugares que recomendo são Ipanema e Copacabana. :)
      Se você tomar todos esses cuidados pode relaxar e viajar tranquilo. O Rio é uma cidade maravilhosa! Você vai amar!

    Wow, takes me forever to write in Portuguese but it's good practice for me because I almost never do. I'm much older now but I still absolutely love traveling and meeting people from different places and cultures. I've Been to 6 African countries and hope to get back to Africa before I die. Notice me please, does Brazilian and Portuguese speaks mixed Spanish? And the accent is similar to Russian. Im just confused. Or maybe Spanish and Portuguese have the same language to speak but different in accent.

      Portuguese and Spanish are different languages, not different accents. They are similar because they are both romance languages, just like Italian and French, but all these languages are different from each other. In Brazil and Portugal, we speak Portuguese, we don't speak Spanish.

      @@lightyagami5732 Remember French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish (Castillian), Galician and Oxitan were once the very same language: Vulgar Latin. Vulgar Latin was the language spoken by the people during the Roman Empire, it is kind of different from the Classical Latin spoken by the Catholic Church. At some point they started to break apart and form groups of Languages and finally evolved to nowadays languages. So when you see a word that is very similar in Portuguese and Spanish or Italian or French it is not cause the root of the word is spanish or italian but Latin! Those languages are also known as neo-latin languages, they are a proof Latin didnt die it just evolved. So the similiaraties exist cause there is a group of neo-latin languages spoken in Europe. They share many historical formations and are called Iberian branch of the Latin Language. They are Portuguese, Castillian (which has the status of Spanish language but it is not, cause there are many languages spoken in Spain), aragonian, Galician and Catalan. All of them share a lot of words. There are other groups of Latin languages, such as Occitan and French (The franco branch of Latin), Italian, Sardinian etc (Italic branch) and Romenian (Slav branch). All of them share a lot of the same lexicum and gramatical constructions since they are like the grand-sons of the Latin spoken in the ancient age.
