  • Helen shows how to hang a picture on a brick wall.
She goes through what you'll need to complete this task, including how to find the right size screw and wall plug. If you are not yet confident using a drill, this is the perfect tutorial to start with.
    WHAT IS POWER TOOLS?
Power Tools is a series of household DIY videos made by women, for women.
These fun, approachable and concise videos give instructions on basic DIY tasks like changing a lightbulb, smashing a window, painting a wall and using a drill.
The videos are part of a project by award-winning arts and social justice organisation Idle Women and were all made in St Helens, Merseyside, UK.

As a man, women in these comments need to stop putting themselves down. You don’t need a man to help you with appliances and stuff, you’re smart enough and capable. Don’t let sexist ideas prevent you from completing tasks. If I ever have a daughter, she’ll be taught to be capable of independence and to ignore sexist ideals.

Thank you, an excellent video, just what I needed to learn. The choice of music is great, but I personally find it that the simultaneous speaking and music is a bit stressful. I once used a drill to make a hole in a wall of concrete to fasten a screw for hanging a painting. I did not put the concrete drilling mode on, just average drilling. I made a horrible hole to the wall. I just wondered why it did not drill through. Inexperienced and I was a fool.

Excellent video Helen. I used an ordinary drill to do this but, despite a lot of effort and changing bits, was only able to drill a couple of holes less than 1 inch in depth. Found out afterwards I need a drill with hammer capacity. Wish I'd seen your video before I bought the drill.

I didn't grow up in a stable home or with parents/people that were in a place to teach me these things so never learned any of this and want to just overcome that and become more handy myself. I'm so glad I found this channel - youtube is a great resource but I find it a bit intimidating sometimes being a young and extremely inexperienced woman trying to crack into this stuff!! A quick question whilst I'm here, I drilled 4 holes into an internal solid wall for shelf brackets, but the holes are a bit off even though I marked it correctly. I now need to drill another 4 holes slightly higher and to the left. How far apart do the holes need to be from the first set of holes to avoid weakening the new drilled holes?
Also, any advice for drilling holes accurately without the drill bit wondering off? I'm thinking off using a much smaller drill bit first and then working my way upto the 8mm bit that I need. Thank you kindly.

Wiring for sockets/switches/whatever SHOULD be routed in a straight line directly above, below, or to the side of the component. It shouldn't go diagonally, but it could go horizontally or vertically any distance.
Wiring zones are just the rook in chess, I guess. As in chess, try to avoid drilling into the path of a rook.

These so-called male trades such as using power tools, knowing electronics, mechanics, etc, is far more useful in society than those female hobbies of cooking, cleaning, sewing, that at a young age women should be taught the basics of using power tools, hardware, etc. as well as business.

Great tutorial. i don't think there was mention of the drill bit needing to be a masonry bit though. To anyone planning on doing any drilling. You need to be aware of any live wires, gas, water pipes or anything else. You will want to use a detector or other method to make sure you're not drilling through live wire or water pipes!
