  • In this episode of Centre Stage, our guest is Ilan Pappé. He’s an Israeli historian and professor at the University of Exeter. Pappé is known for his outspoken views on the Israeli-Palestinian question - drawing both praise and criticism. He’s the author of several books including "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine", in which he challenges the traditional Israeli narrative over the establishment of Israel in 1948.
In today’s episode, Pappé discusses the dangers of the Zionist ideology and its impact on Israel and Palestine, the historical context of October 7, and his vision for a one-state solution.

We need de-programming in the US also. It's in process, but not organized. We have historians like the late Howard Zinn, Daniel Immerwahr ("How to Hide an Empire") but there is an active resistance (of course) to revisionist history re: treatment of indigenous people and the racism that goes back to slavery and to the present. It seems many (all?) nations develop narratives and educational systems to keep their myths alive. More power to Pappe

@@jenkins7459 I think you never read one of his books. His assertions are the result of logical deduction from facts and sustained answers to questions raised from proven sequences of facts. A propagandist just uses slogans and even false facts to force others to accept their ideology. I don't think Ilan Pappé is a propagandist at all. He is a scholar historian who cares about facts, not about ideology. He knows that ideologies themselves are just facts shaped by history and you need to be aware about that or you will be fooled by them.

Zionist? So does Israel not have the right to exist? Is that how Europe responds to their uninvited immigrants, by attacking them as occupiers? Jews have been in Israel for over one hundred years. 80 percent of Jews in Israel were driven there from neighboring countries in the Middle East. Palestinians have to start taking some of the blame and responsibility for their predicament. Most Jews would love a peaceful and prosperous Palestine.

Britain didn't give away any land, this is an Israeli invention. The British goal was to create a Jewish ruling class in Palestine, just as the French were doing in Syria with the Alawites. This is about territory for governance, not land. Land ownership is private property, at no point was this "given away". As Britain became aware that the zionists had no intention of living along side the existing population, and were going to be violently removing them, Britain did actually start to put the brakes on... not very hard, we're still talking extreme racist times, but the zionists started getting support from Stalin, getting huge weapons imports from Czechoslovakia, and there was a lot of violence between the zionists and the British. But, after the war, there were some 300,000 holocaust survivors stuck in camps in Germany, and this was a real problem, as the population was deeply indoctrinated into the idea that it was Jewish people who were responsible for all the problems, and nothing would be better until they were gone. The zionists didn't really want the survivors going there, seeing them as probably the "bad ones" who saved themselves by selling out others, so couldn't be trusted, but Ben Gurion was basically bribed with getting legal recognition of the state in return for accepting a load of the survivors. The zionists began the massacres in november 1947, as British forces were preparing to leave. We turned a blind eye, to get peace in Europe, we condemned the Palestinians to eternal violence and terror. When the holocaust survivors arrived, they had empty homes to stroll right into. The zionists lied to them, exploiting their experience in Europe to control them, telling them "they hate us, we defended ourselves", trapping Palestinians in a narcissistic relationship where everything they do to try and escape punishment is interpreted as aggression that requires further punishment... ie, victim inversion. But make no mistake, the zionists stole the land with guns, they were extremely brutal, nobody gave it to them.

Thanks for this insightful interview. It is nice to see a positive vision of the future coming from a very wise man.
I live in South Africa, and have since 1983. The other day I was at the Barber Shop, it is owned and run by a Muslim man from Indian heritage. His staff is young Zulu men and women. During my haircuting session, the clientele that came through were Indian males, white males, and me an American expat male. To listen to the banter and leg pulling amoungst all ensundry was heart-warming and cheering to the spirit. In 1983 this group would not have ever been allowed to even assemble. South Africa, with all its warts, has made the transition that Professor Pappé envisions for Palestinians and the Israelis that want to stay as equals. Right now they don't know what they are missing.

Probably fair to say that the rival tribes in South Africa like the Boars, Zulu etc etc did not include many religious fanatics who consider they are on a mission from God to wipe out their rivals no matter what the cost and were keen to make a deal to avoid a never ending war. If Israel crumbles in the same way as other states in its imediate locality its probably going to go the same way as Syria, Lebanon and Iraqi with the moderate democrats crushed between rival extreme religious groups and fleeing into exile while the fanatics keep fighting. In this Ilan Pappe fleeing to UK in 2006 seems to be ahead of the rush.
