Palestine Talks | Norman Finkelstein

  • Activist, writer and public intellectual Norman Finkelstein speaks candidly about his early upbringing in New York City - raised by parents who were both Holocaust survivors - and how that has led to his tireless pro-Palestinian solidarity work, including his “forensic scholarship” of Israeli criminality and the related abuse of Holocaust memory.
Towards the end of the discussion, Finkelstein offers important though difficult advice to those who embrace “the values of truth and justice,” which - as he alludes - are ideals that do not come with any significant personal "reward".

As Scott Ritter said recently, ‘if October 7th hadn’t happened, the people of Gaza would have experienced October 6th on repeat forever’. A life in an open prison, treated as filth, forgotten, abused and left for dead. Now the world can see and feel their plight and understand who the victims are in this horrific conflict. I know you're humble enough to not overstate the loss of your own employment because of your Palestine advocacy but it's a testament to your moral clarity, integrity and fortitude. Norman, I am glad that you're the first person from whom I learned about Palestine 16 years ago because it showed me that there are conscientious Jewish voices who acknowledge and respect the humanity of Palestinians. I am still in awe of your masterly forensic analysis of "From Time Immemorial". I have lived and worked in Palestinian refugee communities in Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. There should be a Norman Finkelstein Institute for Truth and Justice, a think tank and educational institution dedicated to supporting all those who wish to study, teach, publish, record, and rectify historical and contemporary conflicts and to spreading that knowledge. The fact that the academic world, at least in the United States, is so indebted these days to big business is a big part of the reason for campus censorship and the notorious "Palestine exception" to free speech in academia. Thank you @TRT World for this interview, and thank you Dr. Finkelstein for your's life's work which has contributed immeasurably to the Palestinian cause. As a greenhorn I have no idea what "Identity politics" are so I shall have to read up on them/it. I loved the final few minutes, I identify with professor Finkelstein's frustrations at the betrayals we suffer. The real world of fame and fortune, power and privilege, agreed. However in my book I differ ever so slightly on the twin forks of the spiritual position, I try to abide by Truth and Love, Justice being what happens if and when we choose to formalize and integrate Love for our brothers and sisters into our moral compass and legal institutions.

WOW! Thank you TRT for producing this insightful interview with Norman Finkelstein! I have recently been following him, triggered by his "debate" on Piers Morgan between Finkelstein and Dershowitz. Your interview with him really was helpful in better understanding his background, how he came to what he sees as his vocation, and just the sense of really caring for him, what he has dedicated his life to and is so competent in doing, being the gadfly to the horse, like Socrates.
And to Norman: thank you for sharing what has shaped your life and some of the specifics that set your focus on who you have become and what you chose (or chose you) to write about and to go out and fervently speak to. And thank you for sharing about the 1%, those who chose the spiritual values and the price that is paid for going down this path.

Just imagine that I’m Palestinian and have never been in Palestine , I’m denied from because my parents were expelled from Haifa - Palestine on 1948 my dad was 10 years old and my mom was 5 years old and they’ve never seen their homeland after that , they’ve passed away few years before and until the last day of their lives they were talking about how beautiful Haifa city was and how desperate they wanted to return back to it .

Yes the editing was unnecessary. We'll listen as long as he speaks.

I was quite moved by what Dr. Finkelstein said. Especially at the end. I wish I was as knowledgeable and intelligent as he is.

    He is an intellectual warrior.
I come under the umbrella of dyslexia so reading has always been an issue and thus had a negative impact on my education .
However , listening to Norman has educated me so much and I am able to articulate the information he so eloquently shares on Palestine .

I just realized thanks to what Norman Filkenstein has just said, that since I was very young, I always fighted for the truth and justice ! I lost many friends who were fighting for fame and money! Today, I’m still the same !

Continue fighting, tell the truth, go beyond everything you been taught, you can hide from the war outside, but you cannot hide from the war within, just be human, stand against hate, division, injustice, keep telling the truth, let your soul erupt like a volcano against any genocide

I have rarely seen such compassion in life as this man, his heart is thrown around on stormy seas yet he never changes course, a true humanitarian, a true brother who cares for others yet nothing of himself
