Great info and insight there Ellie. I could be mistaken as it was only a quick shot. It was around the 7 minute mark of your video.
With the Whole Kylie Minogue Being both a Character and A Person that exists on Earth. We've had similar things as well where other Aliens or characters Happen to look like Actors and Singers. In the Doctor Who Game The Lonely Assassins, John Simm is referenced from Life On Mars, Despite in Universe the Actor Plays the Master. Plus in an even more Meta way, there is a 2013 Comic where the 11th Doctor actually Meets the Actor Matt Smith, Although for time lords its not uncommon for them to have the same face as another individual like Salamander, Maxil, Princess Astra and Strella (Romana), and Most Notibly Lobus Caecilius and John Frobisher from Torchwood.
Richard E Grant was also the Great Intelligence, which walked into The Doctor's timestream. The Great Intelligence just took up a bi-regeneration after the 8th, which was a forced regeneration into John Hurt. The Great Intelligence would just Bi-generate into a new form
yup, sream of the shalka's doctor explained by the great intelligene finding its good side and taking on the doctors regen when it failed in that parllel timeline wher ehe is 9th
Seeing Grant 's photo in Rogue also made me think about how he played the Great Intelligence. I didn't realize there was a connection between that character and the 9th Doctor.
the whole shelves thing with the sonic was in moffat first story too, in the empty child/the doctor dances captain jack asks the doctor "who has a sonic screwdriver?", to which the doctor says i do, going on to ask jacl "have you ever had a late night, needed some shelves putting up?"
I keep thinking that Jenny, from The Doctor's Daughter, is going to have something to do with Ruby Sunday. He doesn't know that she survived, right? The Doctor also says something about his family not being in order. Kind of how he and River had intersecting yet reversed time lines?
the toymaker saying in the giggle he made a jigsaw of the timeline means to me that this explains the paradoxes and multidoctors stories of clasic who. AND it explains THE PANDORICA!! It was the toymaker's way of avenging himself BEFORE ... intelligent fella!
I think the references really work in Doctor Who on rewatch because they make the character feel even more authentic in a way you don't realize when you're living it. Say you had a companion from the 80's. You could toss out a bunch of 80's references that are relevant today but there's actually value in referencing things that are much less popular by later generations which is rarely done when you're creating a character retrospectively. For example, for better or worse, Rose saying "gay" as a pejorative was just a thing people did back in 2005. A modern writer wouldn't think to include that usage, or if they did might be hesitant for obvious reasons. It's like a snapshot in time and it works really well with Who since it's all about Time Travel.
At the risk of making Ellie overly excited... ...I really thought that at the end there Rogue was going to say "come find me sweeties" revealing that he's a pre-Mels River Song regeneration
Yes!! A friend of mine thinks Rogue might be an incarnation of River! His calm statement in the face of danger reminded me of when River dives out the window in Day of the Moon.
“We traveled together we had fun. Then a day came and at the end of that day. I lost them.” Reminds me of jack talking about the dr and rose. I don’t remember when but I feel like he said something similar. Also rogues death scene felt very much like something jack would have done.
One point I haven't seen made is that Rogue is not dressed in the breeches, hose, and soft shoes that the other male party-goers are wearing. Rogue is wearing trousers or possibly pantaloons, with riding boots. I believe this was considered more casual wear in the period. I believe there were high-level parties where men wearing what he was wearing would not have been admitted. I don't know if they did this to make him look casual, or an outsider, or contemptuous of custom, or something else. Perhaps a Bridgerton fan might have some input on that - I haven't been watching that show, but I know they took liberties with the costumes.
I noticed that Rogue was the only male character in boots and not breeches. The whole outsider thing makes sense, as does the nod towards Han Solo's less formal attire and general outlook (who're you calling 'scruffy-looking'?).
not to mention the doctor insinuated that rogue didn’t do enough research on the time period, so it’s possible that he just had a quick look, saw something similar and thought that should work. how he got into the party would be harder to explain though.
Much Respect on this episode after I watched it I went back in the Whoverse and watched the second season of Torchwood the Framents episode showing how Captain Harkness got involved with Torchwood and waiting 100 years for the Doctor.
An episode with The Doctor & Frank Sinatra (maybe played by Seth McFarlane) literally flying to the moon (maybe to a moon base) could be a very on the nose but fun historic guest episode given Sinatra's strong charisma & personality IMO.
I know that people don’t like 15’s sonic (myself included), but I love the sound that 14’s and 15’s Sonic’s make, it’s very satisfying listening to them with headphones on
And it was half done in Vengeance on Varos. The ever-reliable Robert Hammond in his book of 'truthless bilge about every Doctor Who story ever' tells us 'the scene where Peri is turned into a bird was written into the script when Nicola Bryant accidentally got dressed in a wardrobe full of feathers'. (Anyone who claims Peri was not an alien but a native Varosian hasn't heard her accent.)

I noticed the salute as well, because it is one that I give. It is called an Acher's salute. And unlike the kind that Jack gives, the standard salute, given by military training more out of habit. It is a sign of respect for skills earned (when done with the right hand) Otherwise an archer will give it it with the left hand. Which is a big fu.
I haven't seen any mention of the music when the Doctor dances with Rogue. When they meet, the music is "Bad Boy". When they talk in Rogue's ship it is "Can't get you out of my head". When we see that Ruby has been tricking everyone into thinking she was a shape shifter, it is "Pokerface". All comments to the action. The music when they dance is Grace Jones: "I've seen that face before". Makes me wonder if there is more to the Rogue character.
15 hit 14's tardis with the Toy Masters' hammer. It created a new tardis with a jukebox in... But I'm sure the Susan twist character has something to do with them changing "gravity" to "mavity"! Maybe that's the real reason why all the fairy tale stuff is breaking into this dimension and not the salt throwing thing. Also Ruby is blatantly Rose's daughter 😅
The de-cloaking of Rogue's ship reminded me very much of what we see in the MCU and the Orville, which I suppose is basically Star Trek, which tracks with RTD being a Trekkie(see what I did there?).
7:04 Is it just me or does that look like Francine Jones? Francine of course is the mother of Martha Jones. Easter Egg 15 also ties the fact that Jon Groff used Han Solo as inspiration together because Solo's ship is called the Millenium "Falcon". EE number 13 another Steve Moffat penned episode has Captain Jack say to number 9 when talking about assets "in a pinch you could put together some shelves." or something along those lines anyway, just thought I'd point that out.
06:40 #17. You’re leaving out the tango The Doctor and Rogue danced to. It may no be quite as current as the Gaga and Eilish songs, but Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango was released and published in 1974, so it is just anachronistic as the other two songs.
I'm pretty sure Susan Twist is literally gonna be a SUSAN twist. She is The Doctor's granddaughter, Susan. The Doctor left her way back in Hartnell's era, and told her that he'd be back for her. But he never came. She was left there to wait for him, therefore making her 'The One Who Waits', and a literal Susan Twist at the end.
Susan Triad, or S. Triad, is also an anagram of TARDIS - and Susan Foreman was the one who originally used the letters of 'Time and Relative Dimensions in Space' to coin the term TARDIS
To be honest, I wouldn't mind Kate Herron writing Guardians of the Galaxy stories if she was given the same kind of freedom RTD gave her. Because if we're all being honest, Rogue is who Starlord would have/should have been if he was written like he is in the comics. The "classic/throwback" Music, the rogue nature, the banter, the queerness, also the loss. Yeah, Rogue is basically "Starlord if MARVEL had the guts to do him properly." much more so than he's "Jack 2.0".
Watched with my 9yr old granddaughter and within 15 mins into episode she recognised the song we both looked at each other in confusion with episode being set in the 18 hundreds
I've only seen a few episodes of Bridgerton (started watching then got distracted by something else) so I didn't get that reference. However, a similar thing is done in the movie A Knight's Tale. In that case, modern music is used to convey how they felt about their music. We're not excited about 1200s or 1800s music necessarily, but we are excited by our modern music, just like they were. ie "We Will Rock You" was not a thing in medieval times, but how that song makes us feel is the same way they felt about their music. Same thing with Poker Face nowadays vs whatever would have actually been playing at the dance.
Didn't see it mentioned elsewhere. But when singing "Pure Imagination" he was doing an impression of Sammy Davis Jr, who famously sang the "Candy Man" song.
I am the only one who thought the TARDIS having indigestion was link to 1996 TV Movie when the master is sucked into eye of harmony. Possibly hinting at The Master returning once more
I was absolutely LIVING for the doctor and rogue😍 they were so cute! The kiss, the dance, the proposal over which i did indeed gasp, their flirting and the psychic paper suddenly sharing the doctors feelings towards the other person instead of a jobtitle were all totally glorious moments❤😊
Kate Herron was the director of season 1 of Loki, not the showrunner. Michael Waldron was the showrunner/head writer. This has been said incorrectly in at least two videos on this channel. Love the breakdown, btw.
Something else I noticed is that not only does Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” play when they meet, but when the Doctor and Rogue dancing, the song that the orchestra is playing is Grace Jones’ “I’ve Seen That Face Before” Could there be a reveal later that Rogue is a previously seen villain?! The Master perhaps?
the bird ship of Rogue is an hommage to THE GREAT CONDOR !! In Lost cities of gold Les Mysterieuses Citées d'or, with Esteban, Tao, Zia & Mendoza! ROGUE is also the name of Severus Snape in Harry Potter's french translation: Severus ROGUE.
A thing you didn't mention, but really should've, is these almost companions the doctor keeps having. More than once the doctor had encounter people that he thinks would make great companions and should travel with him, but then they die. Other than rogue, Astrid and the Indian girl from the god complex come to mind. Not dead, but otherwise occupied people come to mind like the woman from planet of the dead, or the next doctor, or the guy from the lodger, or even Donna originally at the end of the runaway bride. It's just when the doctor hinted at traveling together, it became painful obvious the episode was gonna end badly. Honestly I'd love a multiverse series about rogue as he travels the doctor verse and encounters many other doctors who bigenerated or even rose with her meta crisis David tennant.
Susan is going to be the doctors granddaughter! He mentioned her I think in The Devils Chord which means they are going to bring her in, most likely this season. I'm almost sure of it!
The various incarnations of her are her version of Clara oswald and the impossible girl, slipping into the time streams of Tradis technology that she has built herself after the doctor abandoned her.
Thanks so much for the Easter egg breakdown! I agree there's certainly something wrong with the TARDIS... did we ever get an explanation as to why the chameleon circuit broke and never got fixed? Perhaps we find out?
Is Richard E Grant's appearance really the Shalka Doctor - or is it a reference to The Great Intelligence who got inside The Doctor's timeline in The Name of The Doctor and rewrote it (played of course by Richard E Grant, who's character Dr Simeon in The Snowmen was taken over by The Great Intelligence)?
One scene that hasn’t been mentioned. The scene where the Doctor and Rogue dance together is quite reminiscent of the Torchwood episode “Captain Jack Harkness.” The episode where Jack and Tosh end up in 1941 and Jack falls in love with the original Captain Jack Harkness. It reminds me a lot of this episode because they too dance and become the only ones in the room.
17:55 Interesting. The doctor's wife on Gallifrey was called 'patience', so they could be 'the one who waits' (tbh at this point anyone could be the one who waits 😅)
Something that struck me in this episode was Rogue's center console, and how much it resembles the console of the TARDIS (radially symmetric polygon in the center of the control room). This was particularly odd considering that Rogue's bird-of-prey shaped vessel has a front, which would usually involve a cockpit with forward-facing controls. An octagonal console in the center of a windowless room seems... deliberate. It doesn't match the Tardis (octagon vs. hexagon), and at no point do either of them comment on the similarity, so it may be nothing, but it makes me wonder if there isn't some connection between Rogue's ship and Gallifreyan technology. Anybody check if he has two heartbeats?
In the “Legend of Ruby Sunday” trailer, there’s a sound clip of the TARDIS’ groan included as well. Yeah, the TARDIS is definitely “infected” or sensing something is wrong… “The One Who Waits” maybe? “The Boss”?? Susan Twist? Or something else?
Ok someone hear me out. What if RTD connected this with the Timeless child arc somehow and revealed that his granddaughter Susan was never actually his granddaughter but instead was a Division Agent tasked with playing that role and they faked the memories onto him. She eventually did care for him and chose to leave the mission and have her own life.
Sorry if these are mentioned elsewhere but I thought 2 more that were rogue called the TARDIS a shed. Cherry said that men like to potter in their sheds in 73 yards. Also when the doctor can't press the button while ruby is stuck to the platform he gets called a coward. I thought this was a call back to parting of the ways when the doctor is asked coward or killer and he says coward any day.
Well what name is The Doctor to call a young time agent who may be undercover as a bounty hunter. Javic Piotr Thane used a number of Alies's years before, he started to use the name Captain Jack Harkness. The Doctor may know enough about Jack from later talks to not call him Javic and by doing so blowing any kind of deepcover identity he might be useing at the time, thus The Doctor asked him to provide him with a name. Also perhaps he had a bit of work done, for the undercover role. (is it him role a D20.)
As a bird fan, it was cool seeing bird aliens. The one with the blue head and massive whiskers/brows, I ^KNOW* I've seen that before! In an animated Disney movie, I think. Oh wait. Maybe I'm thinking of a rockhopper penguin, which Robin Williams played in "Happy Feet!" He wasn't blue, but he had massive "eyebrows." Rogue reminded me of Jack too! I was expecting Jack to be the one Rouge "lost." If we don't get to see 15 interact with Jack, I'm going to be SO disappointed! I loved seeing him with 13, I wish we'd gotten to see him with 11 and 12! 💙
I just realized that two of Susan's cameos were dead, possibly 3. Penny pepper-bean was eaten on the home world, the duke's mom had only passed recently, and possibly the coms officer from space babies.
I noticed this was the 2nd time an episode was named after a character more specificly a companion (fingers crossed Rogue is a companion some day) but the other episode was Rose. Series 9 episode 1
Apologies, I already forgot the numbering, but with all the wibbly-wobbly going on in all of the Pasts, it is within reason for 8 to regenerate into Shalka Doctor and due to other circumstances (different branch, thread, line) he also regenerated into War Doctor and/or Destro. In one timeline, Tom Baker's Doctor did die and regenerate, but in another he was allowed to pass the mantle of The Doctor and now just putters around the library. Would also explain who a Doctor still ages if brought back for a The Doctorses episode/feature. The Schrodinger's Doctor; both dies and doesn't. And both Ellie & Sean, plenty of times, have heard me go on about ReJenny (The Doctor's *Daughter*) is Susan's mum and for some cosmic reason had to leave Susan with One.
the tardis also made a groan in wild blue yonder which was susans first appearance but it was also when the doctor changed time changing gravity to mavity
Ellie ... Russell T Davis did not write this episode as you reminded Us in the very beginning of this episode so it stands to reason the inclusion of the number 600 may have been interesting coincidence. And the ship of Rogue was the Assyrian which more Egyptian than Klingon
Alien Bird People have appeared before in Classic, The Twin Dilemma. As for Kylie, she gets a mention before Astrid Appears, you also didn't mention that Rogue falls as does Astrid.
Russell T. Davies posted a list of episodes people should revisit going into the season finale. One of them is where Richard E. Grant played the Great Intelligence in Doctor Who
I do declayah! Did Rogue buy the Doctor a drink? He's such hard work! Nice to see (and hear!) you've recovered, albeit you seem to have joined Starfleet Medical, going by the jumper! LOL (sorrynotsorry, the mic also adds to the impression of a Starfleet Delta on your chest!)
When the doctor says the tardis has indigestion I think it was a nod to the 1996 movie with Paul Mcgann, at the end of the movie the tardis groans and he tells grace and the other kid with them that it's indigestion
If the Jon Pertwee charity episode (which I have not seen) is now canon -- if the charity episode is now canon -- that raises very important questions about some of the other charity episodes. And Joanna Lumley and Rowan Atkinson! ... and then you mentioned that episode anyway. Obviously totally canon 🙂

Note: the tune playing during the dance is Grace Jones’s Libertango, aka I’ve Seen That Face Before. No way that’s an accident. (Edit: Grace Jones did not write the tune- see comments below. I do think the words are a hint, however.)
I was going to post this ( one of my favourite Grace Jones tracks) . I am glad someone else noticed :)
Libertango was written by Astor Piazzolla. In 1974.
Libertango was composed by Astor Piazzolla in 1974. Grace Jones wrote new lyrics and recorded a version of it, but did not compose it.
@@paulwagner688 Truth! It was a bad characterization on my part. Grace Jones is a huge queer icon of course.
@@DavidBeddard Truth. Thanks for being more precise than I was.
Man that final bit on derilium when river asks " how long is a night on derilium?" and the doctor answers " 24 years" amazing moment.
14:45 (Cue entrance of The Unknown in the infamous Glasgow Chocolate Experience)
The bird of prey ship cloaked also resembles the Klingon Bird of Prey that was cloaked in Golden Gate Park in Star Trek IV.
Exactly! And it's film about time travel, it fits.
Also, noting that Rogue comes across as a more Han Solo type than Jack Harkness, you could say his ship resembles a falcon. Wonder if he bought it at the turn of the Millennium.
Ps your break must’ve done you well, you are looking absolutely wonderful. It’s Brilliant to have you back 😊😊
his ship is an hommage to The great condor in Les Mysterieuse scite d'or... british people seem oblivious to this classic. Lost cities of gold, with Esteban, tao, zia, mendoza
Great info and insight there Ellie.
One thing I noticed, and you didn’t mention, that one of the ladies in the background of one of the dancing shots looked extremely like the actress that played Martha’s mother. I could be mistaken as it was only a quick shot. It was around the 7 minute mark of your video.
Thats because it IS Martha's mum!
That shot was from Bridgerton, and Adjoa Andoh is in Bridgerton as Lady Danbury.
The Great Intelligence would just Bi-generate into a new form
scream of the shalka mate... scream of the shalka was thus influenced by the grea#t intelligence's trip inbto the doctor's timestream as you said !
Also, that little salute is the one used A LOT in The Prisoner. “Be seeing you” is the accompanying phrase.
And Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart used to salute the Doctor. That is what the salute reference made me think of.
Don’t forget Richard E Grant was also in the episodes The Snowmen, The Bella of Saint John and The Name of The Doctor as the Great Intelligence
yup, sream of the shalka's doctor explained by the great intelligene finding its good side and taking on the doctors regen when it failed in that parllel timeline wher ehe is 9th
Han rimes with Jon. Han specifically calls out Lando in "Solo" for pronouncing the a like the a in "hand."
Sinatra's cool and all but, come now, if The Doctor should meet any crooner then it surely has to be Vic Fontaine 😉
@@DavidBeddard Oh, I'm sure 15 would buckle at the knees at meeting that elegant and suave silver fox Vic Fontaine!
I know that people don’t like 15’s sonic (myself included), but I love the sound that 14’s and 15’s Sonic’s make, it’s very satisfying listening to them with headphones on
the doctors outfit also reminded me of peter capaldis 12th doctor, especially since clara mentioned she loved his red velvet coat
It is worth noting that we have had bird aliens before: the Vulture undertakers from the Sarah Jane episode "Death of the Doctor"
This is a breath of fresh air compared to all the reviews revolving around bigotry and phobias.
So someone who hates the show is a bigot then? This new direction is vile and stupid.
@@christopherrichardson6889 If their critique is solely based on bigotry and phobias then it's not a critique. It's hate.
@@robalt1983 well maybe the fans don’t want their childhood hero’s hijacked. Make your own characters and leave ours alone. We don’t want this crap. Isn’t June already enough?
@@christopherrichardson6889 I'm a fan and have been for over 30 years. Married and hetro. And I'm not offended at all by transgender, gay/lesbian/bi, or multiracial/racial characters. As far as "Isn't June enough?" is concerned, people had to fight hard to get equal treatment. And if things would've moved more forward hundreds of years ago, everything would be just normal. Just as it should now.
i think the ship decloaking sequence and the design was probably meant to resemble the Romulan warbirds more than Klingon warbirds
There was decloaking klingon bird of prey sitting in the park. Voyage home. Time travelling.
Welcome back, Ellie! Hope you enjoyed your holidays!
Sh🎉is great
I haven't seen any mention of the music when the Doctor dances with Rogue.
Not a Bridgerton watcher but couldn't help but notice Adjoa Andoh at 7:04, nice (accidental?) nod there :D
The de-cloaking of Rogue's ship reminded me very much of what we see in the MCU and the Orville, which I suppose is basically Star Trek, which tracks with RTD being a Trekkie(see what I did there?).
The de-cloaking of the ship and taking The Doctor onboard is reminiscent of Rose and Captain Jack's cloaked ship in The Empty Child.
Speaking of music. An orchestral snatch of "Libertango" (heard on C4's "The Piano" in competition on Sunday 9 June) written 1974.
Astor piazolla as anothe commente rreminded me of !
Watched with my 9yr old granddaughter and within 15 mins into episode she recognised the song we both looked at each other in confusion with episode being set in the 18 hundreds
You’ve clearly never encountered _Bridgerton,_ then. That’s one of the most famous things the show has always done.
@@DrWhoFanJ They likely both copied the idea from Westworld - the series. The player piano always played modern hits.
Possibly hinting at The Master returning once more
"Boss"/"Master"? Hmm...
15:54, it's weird how the tardis isn't a fan of "Rogue" Just like how it wasn't a fan of Jack
Surprised the dance scene wasn't mentioned. The room disappearing as they danced was an almost shot by shot reference of the 2005 pride and prejudice.
RTD illustrated James Goss' DW poetry book Now We Are Six Hundred
As for the screwdriver joke, 9 also said to jack in ‘the doctor dances’ “you never had a long night? Never had a lot of cabinets to put up?”
10:10 now that im actually taking a good look at it the symbol on the ring actually kind of resembles the logo used to show the rogue class in dnd
the bird ship of Rogue is an hommage to THE GREAT CONDOR !! In Lost cities of gold
Les Mysterieuses Citées d'or, with Esteban, Tao, Zia & Mendoza!
The doctor's wife on Gallifrey was called 'patience', so they could be 'the one who waits'
(tbh at this point anyone could be the one who waits 😅)
It's obviously Amy Pond. 😁
@@TristanHathawayI would love Amy to return but that makes no sense at all 😌
@@johnroberts524 it was a joke, but it makes total sense. She's the Girl Who Waited
To me, that ship decloaking was more reminiscent to a Romulan vessel decloaking with the green coloring used. That's my opinion.
Honestly...I clicked the thumbs up at the 04:00 when I heard Ellie's voice. The vid breakdown was awsome sauce
15's costume was in period. 3 was just an old fashioned thing that didn't really fit any historical period. But my cousin was in love with him.
Oh wait. Maybe I'm thinking of a rockhopper penguin, which Robin Williams played in "Happy Feet!" He wasn't blue, but he had massive "eyebrows."
Rogue reminded me of Jack too!
Grant played the Great Intelligence in Doctor Who
The TARDIS was fine until 15 whacked it with a giant mallet. I think both the Doctor and the TARDIS wants to be whole.
The Doctor and Rogue`s dance music is Grace Jones' "I've seen that face before (Libertango)" Not as recent as the other two but more or less modern
I do declayah!
Did Rogue buy the Doctor a drink?
He's such hard work!
Nice to see (and hear!) you've recovered, albeit you seem to have joined Starfleet Medical, going by the jumper! LOL
(sorrynotsorry, the mic also adds to the impression of a Starfleet Delta on your chest!)
When the doctor says the tardis has indigestion I think it was a nod to the 1996 movie with Paul Mcgann, at the end of the movie the tardis groans and he tells grace and the other kid with them that it's indigestion
Surely it’s suggested The Doctor will go in search of Rogue, so he’ll be back. Which is great since Groff is amazing. So wonderful in Hamilton.
Did anyone else catch the actress who played Martha’s mother was one of those who attended the dance. You can see her in # 17 right at the end.
Do you remember, post-regeneratiuon was long for the 6th doctor! He almost let hiusu name slip! During the trial of a timelord we see his trip on Ravolox (the planet earth stolen in the future by timelord corruption) There he says to Perri : "i could live here and write my memoirs... The memoirs of Doctor..." and there Perri interrupts him! We almost learned his name fro mthe 6th's mouth but Perri hid it forever from us!!!
The Hologram features screencaps for 6- Attack of the Cybermen, 8- TV Movie, War- The Day of the Doctor, 10- The Next Doctor. If anyone can help me out with the others it would be appreciated thanks- I think the 2nd and 5th are taken from The Five Doctors but i'm not sure yet

The way he said "find me" reminded me so much of her
Welcome back Ellie!! Glad your here, Sean did a banger job for you but we are happy to have you back and I hope you had a wonderful time.

About the salute. 14 gave 15 that salute at the end of the Giggle so it probably has nothing to do with Captain Jack.
