    One thing I haven't seen anyone comment on: The ep's Susan Twist appearance confirms to me that she's most likely been spread across the Doctor's path through time, in a timey-wimey way, like for example, how Clara was.
    Because whereas all the other appearances could just be her intentionally sneaking around, following the doctor, and hiding like the Meddling Monk, in D&B, she *is* Lindy's mother, and has presumably raised her, her entire life.

    • @Damon_NZ
      @Damon_NZ หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Lindy may only be conditioned to think it's her mother. Could she have been her whole life and memories of home and family, only implanted?
      Consider how easily everyone is already mind-controlled anyway. It's like they live in a terrarium, perhaps a snapshot of what their world was like. She's never been hugged, they are certainly not reproducing.

      People mention Clara a lot with relation to Twist. I look farther back. I think she's splintered like Scaroth of the Jagaroth. Something will happen in the finale to splinter her biodata across time or along the Doctor's biodata time line specifically. Which is certainly Clara-esque.

They can't function or walk without the technology. Outside the city there are giant worms roaming around. The story was adapted for TV in 1966 for BBC'S Out of the Unknown. Turn left didn’t seem to connect necessarily until at the end Donna said “bad wolf”, he runs outside and sees “bad wolf” written everywhere. Face the raven seemed like a filler episode kinda until the end when Clara dies and the doctor gets taken, that’s how it happens with these episodes like the last couple mins of an episode is the connecting piece to the 2 parters. Season 5 practically every episode was connected at least at the end by seeing the crack. I’ve just watched the series so many times through that I know it’s definitely something that is done and you don’t see how they connect until the last couple mins of an episode. The sewer corridors reminded me of the sewers from the movie Logan's Run in a way. Evil Dot reminds a bit of the robot from the movie that would go evil against Logan 5 and Jessica 6, and the naming convention of the characters in this episode kind of reminded me of the names in the movie too. Also, they got a "dot" there, as in the crystal in their hand that will go red when it's time to go into the Carousel. The age of 17 to 27 being permitted in Finetime is reminiscent of the maximum age of 30 in Logan's Run. In an ironic way, the survivors at the end became like the Runners of Logan's Run...
    Btw, I got a theory about the end. No one of the other survivors had a Dot from what I could see. They're held "at bay" by the perception field of the Tardis. They're also like the Dot of Lindy, i.e. aggressive. In a way, the Tardis is also acting as a "Dot" and the perception bubble it creates is the "Bubble." The "saving" that the Doctor is referring to is saving them from their aggressive Dots waiting to strike once he knows that the Tardis has vanished. What I assume happens "off screen" is that he goes away with the Tardis, the Dots begin attacking the door, and once through it track the survivors and one by one pick them off alphabetically. The reason for this theory is the mention from the Doctor about halfway through the episode along the lines of "the shield won't hold for much longer, so get here." It implies that one or two of the survivors are already in the sewers with him, and Lindy and her friends are the final few to get there. This line implies that Dot knows the perception field is there and is just working on weakening it or until it goes away.

    Maybe it’s just me, but my interpretation of the ending was not about racism but about tribalism and, to a lesser degree, classism. This seems more in keeping with the bubble/echo chamber theme of the episode.
    Initially, The Doctor is very direct with Lindy and is obviously not from her bubble/tribe and is quickly rejected. In the second attempt to help Lindy, Ruby pretends to be in her tribe by telling Lindy what she wants to hear to gain her trust even though Ruby is not part of Lyndy’s specific bubble. Ricky September is not only part of her bubble, she is a massive fan girl of his, so of course she is going to trust him. It is also mentioned that Fine Time is very exclusive to young rich kids (classism).
    By the end, this guy from her “tribe” tells her that they can survive out in the wild. Again, it’s what she wants to hear and believe even though she can barely walk by herself, never mind trying to chew gum at the same time. Meanwhile, the Doctor is telling her the opposite, you cannot survive out there on your own. This contradicts the message from her tribe/echo chamber and is therefore rejected out of hand. He’s also not rich or as young as the Fine Time kids so he is looked down on as being lower class as well.
    That’s just how I saw the episode. Bringing racism into the episode at the last minute seems very out of left field.
    Having said all of that and going back and rewatching parts of the episode, I see why many people see the issue at the end as purely racism. Other than hair color, there is no noticeable diversity within Lindy’s bubble.
    Maybe the answer is all three things are going on at the same time. I always find it interesting how different people can interpret the same thing in different ways.

      It was both racism and classism. Firstly, as others have pointed out, she couldn't even tell the Doctor was the same person she'd seen that morning because "I thought you just looked alike". Then there's the fact that she's far more rude to the Doctor than to Ruby, despite both being the same class of outsider. There's the "he's not as stupid as he looks" comment, implying that his appearance is enough for her to decide he's stupid. The jump to "that's voodoo" when talking about the TARDIS.
      Yes, they're classist. They're also very clearly racist. And in case you still need convincing... Russell himself said part of the reason he made this episode the way he did was because when Ncuti was cast, people kept asking if the Doctor will experience racism when traveling to the past. And he responded, "The past? What about right now?" So he set a story about racism in the future.

    A couple of things I noticed, Firstly, when The Doctor brings up Suzie who's on the list just before Lindy, she says "Happy day!', surely a nod to the '70s series The Children of the Stones? Also, the final location of the episode, the docks, reminds me of the submarine base in The Spy who Loved me, and when the boat starts to leave, there's a hint of the bond motif in the music too.

    First off a salute to the longest living companion to date, William Russell. God bless you and thank you. Secondly, Susan Twist. I had this theory that Doctor Who right now is self aware its in this televised series of events, each episode seemingly a nod to a pre=existing show or genre of movie, i.e. musical, thriller, family friendly, etc. Susan Twist being in each installment as this helper, assistant. mother figure, might not be such a coincidence. What if Susan Twist's character is actually a new villain, a sort of twisted producer or director that is pulling the strings to everything going on, a la The Truman Show or Big Brother? And to that. what if she had a hand in Ruby Sunday's life, her being constructed solely to fit this arc?

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not sure if Susan Twist fits in quite like that, but I've been suspecting that the show is going for "it's aware it's a show" since the Devil's Chord. My guess is that the big bad for the season will turn out to be something like The Celestial Storyteller, who's been influencing the whole season since the Celestial Toymaker was banished. Whether that Storyteller is Susan Twist or not... I dunno. I half expect it to be Ruby's biological parent, the Oldest One, the One Who Waits.

Also I am from Ukraine but mostly look at English content, so I think this should be at least recognizable for me. For example yesterday I came up with two ways to make ending scene so much better
      1) instead of making them racist make them realize they were wrong, say sorry to the doctor for wrongly judging him based on his skin but as a redemption rebuild society in the forest instead of easy save with doctor
      2) make one actually accept to safe his/her life and have all of them disgusted by him for joining someone like that.
      But "You are not one of us" can relate to anything, first thought was he is not from their city, not their social class, so it could have been definitely communicated better.
