My nanny and our house boy when were young were from mountains near Kalinga. And I remember they used to read the newspaper and books to me in perfect English. They’re highly educated. They informed me that missionaries came to the mountains and educated their elders and in return their elders educated them in English. They also used to help me with my English homework when we were in grade school. It helped me greatly. Because we migrated here in the United States and speaking English comfortably was beneficial. Thanks to those my Nannies and houseboys.
Coz colonizer American wanted to stay in Ph cool places so they stayed and have vacations in our mountains provinces and locals learned from them for long time
@@kilometer6712 No that's not accurate. Americans has mining around Cordillera and mountain provinces and they built Baguio as their center offices and housing for their American personnel. It was designed by an architect named Burnham. Then when American missionaries arrived there they educated the elders and taught them and converted them to Christianity. They passed it down to the next generation of people living there.

Went to Sagada last 2016. While having coffee in one of the cafe we heard kids fluently speaking english. Thought they were tourist but got surprised when we saw that they are elementary students.
I agree with you Kyle. Most Filipinos living in the remote areas of the cordilleras are very good in speaking English, couple that with their industriousness and respect to visitors. It’s also very nice of you revisiting Places and people you came across in the past. I remember Teddy, the gentleman with sweet smile and you gave your Canadian sweatshirt (?), the last time you were there. How beautiful Kalinga is😇
The first time you visited Kalinga I thought that was best blog you ever made. You met this farmer guy and he invited you to have a coffee at his house. In return you gave him your Canada shirt.
I am from Mindanao but living in Japan for so long . I heard about calinga but it’s my first time to see the view of the village. It’s so nice place and the people in the village is so nice too . Hope I can visit this place when I get home. Thank you so much for vlogging this place .
I can say as a Filipino they're the friendliest community in the Philippines. From warmest greetings, being approachable, nice, accommodating, hospitable and of course simple and smart. 👏👏👏
yes it is true before we were used to be called headhunters but if a stranger comes we take good care of him or her until she or he leaves the place we can even offer free board n lodging hehe so go and visit more our beloved province n hometown lubuagan❤

ENGLISH SPEAKING FILIPINOS ..... Spectacular drone shots of those mountainous greeneries and beautiful rice fields. Very nice meeting Gamon who speaks very good English. True, Locals who live there know English more than Tagalog. Basically because American missionaries during the yesteryears have set up schools there where they were taught Christianity and English Language. Calorie burning 630 steps and more than a million strides just to reach that village only to find out that Teddy is now in Tabuk. I watched the episode where you gave your jersey shirt to Teddy as a parting token. It made me cry. You are very lucky Kulas, you are there in the part of the Cordillera again. I have never been there although I have a lot of relatives who are residents there. An aunt who was a nurse and another aunt who was a teacher, they are both in heaven now. But I have a cousin, a dentist right now having a successful life in Tabuk, now the capital city of Kalinga. I hope I can visit that part of the Cordillera one day. Wishing you wise and well as you safely hamper the pavements of that beautiful place .... SUPER AMPING !!!
Beautiful Philippines from North to South from East to West of different tribes and dialects in addition to the national language Tagalog and English. Tagalog is now language mostly spoken by Pilipinos. Second is English. We are local, national, and international speaking people. A sign of adaptability and smartness. Some elected officials propose that Tagalog be used in communication in public speeches. Not really a good idea because some areas English is their second language not Tagalog. Just let the speakers use language he is comfortable with either Tagalog, English or local dialect. The people will understand and can be translated if they don't.

That is true that the elder people in the Mountain Provinces speak English better than most low landers because they learned it from the missionaries who taught them in school and most of them if not all are highly educated people. Most of the farmers I encountered there were college graduates and working professionals something I deeply admire because they value the land where they came from and the culture they were born to. Also, you will notice, that Kalingans and the people of Cordillera love country music. Thanks, Kulas for featuring Kalinga in your blog. I hope you can reach Tinglayan too. When I was searching the provincial hymns for different provinces in the Philippines, I was surprised that the Cordillera provinces use pure english in their provincial hymns, unlike other hymns in the philippines that use a veriety of languages I, myself, am from Apayao and although we use Isnag and ilocano here, we don't use them for our hymns
During the pre-WW2 period, American missionaries went up the mountains of Benguet & Kalinga and set-up schools & taught English. The highland people learned the language well. That's why it isn't surprising many of them speak it well especially the oldtimers.
Not only Benguet and Kalinga but the whole Cordillera region most especially in Bontoc, Mountain Province which is the center of the old Mountain Province and where there is a Catholic School and a Catholic Church and the pioneer priest was +Father Leon and a convent with a clinic founded by +Mother Agnes. I also remember Sister Elsa in Bontoc and also Mother Basil who stayed in the Convent in Sadanga- all nuns and priests from Belgium and Switzerland and Holland who were loved by the people there. There is also the Anglican Church in Bontoc where American missionaries constructed an elementary school which is known as All Saints' Mission Elemenrary School where we enrolled (even though we are Catholics)and graduated elementary and had the best teachers in all the subjects and where we learned how to talk in fluent English and where we learned to sing songs from The Hymnal that were all in English. I liked those Friday vespers and school masses because we all sing together hymns in 4 voices.
@@XandieFireman yes that was before WW 2 and they stayed and educated the people in the Cordilleras. The founder priest of the Catholic church +Father Leon fom Belgium is buried in the cemetery in Bontoc and as far as I know also the nuns.
A place in a cloud..... what a lovely view so beautiful. I'm seeing the Philippines with a new eyes thanks to you. That must be healthy living with plenty of fresh air up in the mountain less pollution with those greeneries absorbing CO2. Plenty of exercise going up and down the mountains and hills. The first time I saw rice terraces this way so impressive.
Maybe instead of saying the phrase "simple life", maybe say, "uncomplicated life". Just my thoughts... What I like about all of this... you know when you meet people in life that leave a resonance of your time with them and the promises to meet up again but most of the time never happens, what I appreciate about this adventure is that you are keeping true to your promises. This is just as special as the Muslim community in Mindinao quietly protecting you on your travels. As somebody that has enjoyed travel documentaries for many years, this adventure is one of the most poignant ones. Michael Palin would be proud of you :)
I love the Cordillera region. specially Mountain Province, Kalinga and Ifugao. I suggest pass by Bontoc, Mountain Province and go to the Museum there to get a history of the Igorot, the indgenous people of the Cordillera. a trip to Sagada also in Mountain Province and last but probably the best (for me), is to see Batad (amphiheater style rice terraces) and Banaue rice terraces in Ifugao. when you have passed by the places I have mentioned, get a ride from Bontoc, Mountain Province to Baguio via the Halsema Highway. you will see the Cordillera Mountain Range. the view is spectacular! (reminds me of the Swiss Alps…) and tell the driver to stop when you pass by the “highest elevated highway of the Philippines” in Atok, Benguet and take photos!
Thank you for appreciating our beloved Cordillera. The new highest point is at 7,968.07 feet (2,428.66 meters) above sea level here in Tinoc, Ifugao which is higher by 568.07 feet (173.14 meters) compared to the previous one found in Cattubo, Atok, Benguet at 7,400 feet. Hope you can visit it also. ❤️
In my hometown very less people can speak English confidently. Obviously those people in their 40s and above. but these people are confident and composed when talking to a foreigner.

We are pretty much aware of all places specially historical ones around the Philippine Island thanks to our history teachers in elementary and high school👏🏻.. I believe from Mizoram, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Taiwan and Filipinas used to be connected to each other because of similarities of 'Rice Terraces'. (1 Chronicles 1 : 19 ...the earth divides) Similar also on a tribal dance of Tinikling and chicken dance. Cheraw (pronounce as Chero) is Tinikling in Mizoram language called Mizotawng. Mizoram belongs to Indian state with same flags but differs in culture and languages. Mizo people looks Filipinoes too.

Your right Kyle in all my years of travel I have found it to be a smaller world than we think because we meet wonderful and amazing people that have connections all over this earth example on my first visit to New Zealand I met a man that come from my birth town in UK amazing and so many folk I meet have same interests as me , anyways man that was a long climb of many steps to reach your friend . Whereas with other Filipinos (and I don't mean to generalize) if you speak English, that will automatically mean that you are rich or also "feeling rich". Heard experiences where people get comments like as "hindi mo bagay mag english" regardless of how fluent the person speaks. However, in the Cordilleras, you are able to hear even simple folks or even farmer's children being able to speak English.
Now I remember Manong Teddy is. He's the one you gave your pancho (as Boding calls it) Canada jersey to. You are really becoming Filipino, Kulas. Whatever you give a person will always be appreciated or even that simple thought of visiting is enough.

My wife is from Cagayan, just to the north of Kalinga. Most people there speak English also. Ilocano, Tagalog, English are my wife's languages. Very friendly people in that area. Kalinga has great coffee. I have several bags in my pantry right now. We were just in the area a few weeks ago. I truly did not want to leave. Few places in Philippines like the Cordillera area.

Good morning, Kulas! That's so true! Thanks to the Belgian Catholic Missionaries (ICM and CICM) who braved the hostile terrain riding horses in the early 1900s. They opened schools and clinics and really served the village people. Upland rice and boiled beef, perfect meal! Have a safe journey!

The Rice terraces are definitely a treasure of our country, and so are these humble and kind people.

Just let the speakers use language he is comfortable with either Tagalog, English or local dialect. The people will understand and can be translated if they don't.

That is true that the elder people in the Mountain Provinces speak English better than most low landers because they learned it from the missionaries who taught them in school and most of them if not all are highly educated people. Most of the farmers I encountered there were college graduates and working professionals something I deeply admire because they value the land where they came from and the culture they were born to. Also, you will notice, that Kalingans and the people of Cordillera love country music. Thanks, Kulas for featuring Kalinga in your blog. I hope you can reach Tinglayan too. When I was searching the provincial hymns for different provinces in the Philippines, I was surprised that the Cordillera provinces use pure english in their provincial hymns, unlike other hymns in the philippines that use a veriety of languages
I, myself, am from Apayao and although we use Isnag and ilocano here, we don't use them for our hymns
During the pre-WW2 period, American missionaries went up the mountains of Benguet & Kalinga and set-up schools & taught English. The highland people learned the language well. That's why it isn't surprising many of them speak it well especially the oldtimers.
WW2??...missionaries came way back 1900's....
Not only Benguet and Kalinga but the whole Cordillera region most especially in Bontoc, Mountain Province which is the center of the old Mountain Province and where there is a Catholic School and a Catholic Church and the pioneer priest was +Father Leon and a convent with a clinic founded by +Mother Agnes. I also remember Sister Elsa in Bontoc and also Mother Basil who stayed in the Convent in Sadanga- all nuns and priests from Belgium and Switzerland and Holland who were loved by the people there.
There is also the Anglican Church in Bontoc where American missionaries constructed an elementary school which is known as All Saints' Mission Elemenrary School where we enrolled (even though we are Catholics)and graduated elementary and had the best teachers in all the subjects and where we learned how to talk in fluent English and where we learned to sing songs from The Hymnal that were all in English. I liked those Friday vespers and school masses because we all sing together hymns in 4 voices.

@@XandieFireman yes that was before WW 2 and they stayed and educated the people in the Cordilleras. The founder priest of the Catholic church +Father Leon fom Belgium is buried in the cemetery in Bontoc and as far as I know also the nuns.

That must be healthy living with plenty of fresh air up in the mountain less pollution with those greeneries absorbing CO2. Plenty of exercise going up and down the mountains and hills. The first time I saw rice terraces this way so impressive.

Maybe instead of saying the phrase "simple life", maybe say, "uncomplicated life". Just my thoughts... What I like about all of this... you know when you meet people in life that leave a resonance of your time with them and the promises to meet up again but most of the time never happens, what I appreciate about this adventure is that you are keeping true to your promises. This is just as special as the Muslim community in Mindinao quietly protecting you on your travels. As somebody that has enjoyed travel documentaries for many years, this adventure is one of the most poignant ones. Michael Palin would be proud of you :)

I love the Cordillera region. specially Mountain Province, Kalinga and Ifugao. I suggest pass by Bontoc, Mountain Province and go to the Museum there to get a history of the Igorot, the indgenous people of the Cordillera. a trip to Sagada also in Mountain Province and last but probably the best (for me), is to see Batad (amphiheater style rice terraces) and Banaue rice terraces in Ifugao. when you have passed by the places I have mentioned, get a ride from Bontoc, Mountain Province to Baguio via the Halsema Highway. you will see the Cordillera Mountain Range. the view is spectacular! (reminds me of the Swiss Alps…) and tell the driver to stop when you pass by the “highest elevated highway of the Philippines” in Atok, Benguet and take photos!
Thank you for appreciating our beloved Cordillera. The new highest point is at 7,968.07 feet (2,428.66 meters) above sea level here in Tinoc, Ifugao which is higher by 568.07 feet (173.14 meters) compared to the previous one found in Cattubo, Atok, Benguet at 7,400 feet. Hope you can visit it also. ❤️
In my hometown very less people can speak English confidently. Obviously those people in their 40s and above. but these people are confident and composed when talking to a foreigner.

We are pretty much aware of all places specially historical ones around the Philippine Island thanks to our history teachers in elementary and high school👏🏻.. Yes we frm the moubtains of cordillera specialy our ancestors speaks english bettee than tagalog that is because during the colonial period we were under the americans, and frequently vesited by the american missionaries & tourist . I love what you are doing.

I believe from Mizoram, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Taiwan and Filipinas used to be connected to each other because of similarities of 'Rice Terraces'. (1 Chronicles 1 : 19 ...the earth divides)
Similar also on a tribal dance of Tinikling and chicken dance. Cheraw (pronounce as Chero) is Tinikling in Mizoram language called Mizotawng.
Mizoram belongs to Indian state with same flags but differs in culture and languages.
Mizo people looks Filipinoes too.

Whereas with other Filipinos (and I don't mean to generalize) if you speak English, that will automatically mean that you are rich or also "feeling rich". Heard experiences where people get comments like as "hindi mo bagay mag english" regardless of how fluent the person speaks. However, in the Cordilleras, you are able to hear even simple folks or even farmer's children being able to speak English.
Now I remember Manong Teddy is. He's the one you gave your pancho (as Boding calls it) Canada jersey to.
You are really becoming Filipino, Kulas. Whatever you give a person will always be appreciated or even that simple thought of visiting is enough.

Ilocano, Tagalog, English are my wife's languages.
Very friendly people in that area.

Good morning, Kulas! That's so true! Thanks to the Belgian Catholic Missionaries (ICM and CICM) who braved the hostile terrain riding horses in the early 1900s. They opened schools and clinics and really served the village people. Upland rice and boiled beef, perfect meal! Have a safe journey!
