Re: Radiator Fans, I went thru every fan mod and combination possible trying to keep a 345 V8 Scout cool in Arizona. Matt is absolutely right the water pump driven stocker will haul more air than anything with one caveat: It must have a shroud. Set up like that, the air coming thru the shroud strangely does not blow straight back across the engine but rather exits at 90 degrees from the edge of the shroud, or right straight off the ends of the fan blade.

The tighter and deeper you run the shroud the more efficient it will make your fan. The shroud should be air tight on the back of the radiator. A 3d printed one would be a thing of beauty. That said the vents in your hood also help. Another thing that would help is a scoop or something that looks like a megaphone to focus the air on the radiator. Final configuration was a F600 radiator shell from same '70s era truck , custom made 3 core, extra large passages, 100 percent drive stainless 7 bladed flex fan(no clutch). It is loud at high revs so I just turn up the radio. Always floats around 185-190 DegF, on the beach, revving in the sand, with A/C on. I'm fortunate that my vehicle has enough room for the large cooling system. Flow-cooler used to make a rivet-on back plate you could mount to you factory water pump. Worked for me.
As soon as Matt started chugging that soda I knew what was about to happen. That was great. You folks are always finding ways to do things in a more fun way
This is one of The BEST channels I watch. Always gets a smile and the entire crew is awesome... Matt's, Fab Rats, and Gentry and Son Trucking and Yammie Noob... Jon's Moto Garage.
Try different Thermostats. If your hood interferes open it up and put a scoop on it, perhaps facing rearwards. Can you TIG weld the tips with Stellite? Some dirt track racers remove every other water pump vane, as they spin too fast to pump properly. Fewer vanes seemed to help. Trevor, use some medium Rubbing Compound on those headlights. 10 min per side. Tape the paint.
Ed is like everyone’s Grandpa. I like how he told Rudy that weld looked terrible. No sugar coating. It was great seeing Matt help him even though he had a plane to catch.
We need more of Ed in a chair pointing out the things he needs help with. Reminds me of working with my dad in his garage. Check out Amazon for split loom. 100' is about $15 there. WAY cheaper than parts stores.
You need to watch out with Amazon though. I bought some 1/4 inch fuel hose to use for a diff breather and the outside is already cracking after two years. It doesn't see any sun so it's not a UV problem. It's just junk hose. There is sometimes a reason why things are cheaper on Amazon and it isn't the economics of scale. You think you are just buying a piece of hose or some split loom but with polymers and rubber the composition really matters.
Dirt Track race cars had cooling issues for High RPM as well. Most guys put larger pulleys on the water pumps, slow them down. Solves the problem when running 6000-9000rpm on a small block chevy. Same fix for my hot rod with 5.19 gears that i run 4000-5000rpm. Overdrive the waterpump, use mechanical fan, make a decent shroud, aluminum radiator.
The whole clearance demonstration was hilarious along with him saying that it is the new modeling clay! I’m sure you already visited the potential solution of using the pulley size to tailor the speed of the pump you prefer to your working RPM but just throwing it out there.
@@jeffwisemiller3590 Hahaha, I hear yea. I remember thinking it was a good idea just to go ahead, and pull the old wiring out first when I should've used them to pull the new through. I end up resorting to having the gf help me, and man did that test our relationship for a couple days. Lol
Good to address the fan situation, I saw where people that sounded very knowledgeable had suggestions but it looks like you addressed them having tried and they didn't solve all the problems. Well, while the cats away the guys will not play they work instead. Doing good on the list, keep it up.
Matt, if you “aggressive” or that is on the listener! How many of those that you are dropping “aggressive” knowledge on are actually doing anything close to what you all do? Keep being Matt!
My '00 WJ has the clutch-based cooling fan, and all you need to do to it when towing in a hot climate, is to change the 195 degree thermostat, to a 170 degree thermostat. When that clutch kicks in, dang thing sounds like an airplane trying to take off haha. Those inline 6 engines are great.
If you add a extra cooling tank, like a air tank from a simi. It will give you up to 8 gallons of extra coolant plumb in into heater lines so all coolent flows through rad. It’s not an overflow tank. We do this our simi trucks here in Kansas, rad fan only comes on for A/C .
I am sitting all the way in South Africa hoping the vehicle I just bought is ok. Heard CV noises. Anyways love the channel all way here in Africa and all-ready feeling like apart of the family. Uncle Ed is keeping everyone grounded for sure! Thank you for the fun filled family show. Cheers
No, you don't sound "aggressive" or all high and mighty nor ANYTHING like that! Your knowledge is amazing and MUCH APPRECIATED. (Really, quite the talented Engineer, very proficient.) Sometimes, when one is an expert, their level of certainty might be off-putting to some less knowledgeable, but no need to apologize for that. Cheers!
I never think you sound condescending Matt, I think you sound confident. It’s probably the way you learned to talk doing labor style work were you have to sound sure or your work mates won’t trust you. BUT my wife says I sound “high and mighty” when I talk like that to her so obviously some people take things differently. 😉. I’m and electrician in oil and gas industry and have been in labor type jobs most my life. I love the channel and keep it up!
I have an 02 WJ 4.0L also heating issues , I removed front & rear weather strips , I got clutch & plastic fan & electric fan . So far it doing ok for now I’m in TX heat . Love your videos Matt 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I run a slightly warmed up .030 over 400 sbc in a 79 chevy k20. All I use is the stock clutch fan, big block radiator and the full factory fan shroud. Even in the Ga humid mid 90's summer days, it never comes close to overheating.
Ed’s truck sounds like one of its free spinning pulley bearings is going bad. I had the same squeak coming from my truck right before the pulley bearing froze up and shredded the belt.
Another thing that can help with overheating is to replace your hoses with aluminium pipe/tubing held in with short hose lengths like industrial cooling systems are set up. Rubber hose does not conduct heat very well at all. When you make up alloy replacements and just use short lengths to hold it together you are increasing the amount of heat conductive surface area.
Not just Matt's people, just about on ANY social media, you say something that doesn't agree with what they think is correct, they can and most likely will become internet Nazi's.
I had one of those water pumps in my XJ and I changed back to a stock one it was just starting to leak and didn’t last long. I also did not really notice a difference with keeping the XJ cooler at slow speeds on a hot day. Rudy did a beautiful job with the welding on that exhaust!
Just think about it, you have an engine powering a fan, or at best a little 550 brushless motor. Which do you think has more power, and more power means the ability to push more air.
To be fair that electric fan had a way smaller motor than other models. But clutch fans are popular on certain vehicles for very good reasons, and yes, horsepower.
i love ed...he seems like he has a good heart and gentle soul..I hope he's catching a break in life.. if i was wealthy id take the old man fishing that be awesome I heard ol' Ed like's to fish.
Mill out a larger water pump pulley. That will slow the water pump down at higher speeds. It will also allow the coolant to spend more time in the radiator cooling it down more.
I put a Ron Davis aluminum rad in my 80 series Land Cruiser and it made a HUGE difference. There’s a lot of differences in the aluminum rads I’ve found. ie: you get what you pay for. Haven’t had much luck with electric fans myself.
I've seen enough to understand if something doesn't work you find out why and fix it. Do what you do and move on. Great job! Wonderful people and content.
Your practical information is really great! I've put an electric fan on every vehicle I've owned (that didn't come with one) because of the HP leach. Never had an issue in southern California heat. But it makes sense if you're running high RPM, dragging vehicles at low speeds. Probably why big rigs and tractors (that I've seen) don't use electric fans.
Matt is very confident he shares knowledge to try and teach people. I like having Rudy in charge he has a unique business style with added comedy that makes it interesting.
The State of Hawaii invaded and annexed Texas in 2009. Little known fact. Posing as surfers, the Hawaiian navy attacked port facilities first. The Texans held out at the Alamo for as long as they could but were overwhelmed by Hawaiin army's pineapple rockets.
Check out the dual brushless fans for diesel sled pullers, they rip CFM's too with no drag. I took the Clutch fan off of my weekend duramax toy and installed a 4 core all aluminum with $1300 dual brushless fan set up from duramax store. I am in Texas so heat and humidity are staples of life. Motor doesn't create as much heat w/o the fan especially at normal driving speed , when i make 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile drags it can get a little hot but nothing dangerous.
This is almost the funniest thing Matt has ever said "I'm dressed like this because I'm about to get on a plane and fly to Texas"....as a Houstonian, I wonder if he knows that NO ONE in Texas would wear a shirt like that. And native Hawaiians are the first to tell you that "native Hawaiians" also don't wear shirts like this unless they work at the local Marriot. Love Matt's Off Road...thanks for the laugh.
I have a couple of typical "Hawaiian" shirts--also called "aloha" shirts--[not a native Hawaiian, though we did live there for 6 years]. Don't think I've ever worn a Hawaiian shirt on an airplane. Also, it's common for men to wear Hawaiian/aloha shirts in a professional setting where mainland folks might wear a coat & tie. Almost no one male in Hawaii will wear a tie, even to a funeral--it's all aloha wear.
Howdy Howdy............ That shirt be Rowdy. FYI, Matt we don't wear shirts like that in Texas. Trade the Floral Print for Mossy Oak and your golden! Hope you have a good time in The Lone Star State!
The problem is not keeping the engine cool, it's keeping the engine cool in a desert while running it hard as hell. Have you tried putting it in the freezer overnight to cold soak the block?
Had a custom radiator built for my LS swapped XJ, and it kept things really cool, until I tried pulling my pop up camper to Utah last week. That was a no-go. Had to turn around halfway, and limp it home.
And here we go again. Just finished watching MotoGP, ready for sleep - it’s almost midnight here down under, but nope - my mates MORR drop another vid, ergo sleep later…..
It would be super cool if the build playlists weren't in reverse order. When each video ends and tries to go to the previous one. For those of us playing catch up, it sucks. Keep up the great work fab work!
Got to add my 10 cents worth on the cooling, why not an electric water pump with temp control, fast warm up in winter and better cooling in heat as it has no link to RPM, warp the headers a the engine bay temp will drop as you do not have 8 red hot tube heaters in there. Do not forget any cold air in needs to be able to get out easy as well. Find a friend with a thermal scope/camera and see where the hot spots are on the rad and target that area with the fan/shroud. PS I learned the hard way about engine bay heat after melting the coating of a lot of cables in there.
Glad they fixed Ed’s truck. Is there anything Matt and Rudy and Trevor and the others can’t do, make or fix or modify? Welcome to Matt’s Off Road Recovery, where we do the difficult immediately and the impossible takes juuussst a little longer!
I laughed when I saw the thumbnail. That's a good way to shut down the people saying that an electric fan will move more air! Lol One picture really makes the difference clear!
My county’s summer temperature reaches over 50 under the shade !!!! My advice remove the thermostat during summer and return it Back when weather cool down. After doing this drive your banana with your garbage in your trailer with AC on.
Matt dont read the comments just do what you do there are people who try hard to be smart... you guys are great family Rudy great funny guy and he works good in garage...
I get the CFM difference in those 2 fans and i'm sure you guys have looked at many different ideas, but part of your water pump issues could be because of that heavy clutch fan. No matter what that clutch sticking out there off the water pump, puts pressure on the impeller and bearing and causes premature failure. I'd keep looking for an electric option if possible just to help with that.
@@MattsOffRoadRecovery Gotcha, I had similar on a bronco, kept killing my water pump bearings. Was just a thought. :) I'm watching you guys build its going great !
The hesco water pump is great. The flexalite radiator and fans suck! I've also spent thousands on cooling over the years trying all the different things. Currently I'm running 3 spal fans and mishimoto radiator and I've been ok so far but only with hood vents. I'm also located in the pacific northwest so not as much hot weather. We've had cherokees for years and have tried everything. The 98 grand cherokee 6 cylinder fan clutch is a good upgrade too if running stock style fans but if your yanking things around that fan clutch gets a little too close to the radiator.

Trev & Rudy rockin' the LIST! WOOT! 🕺👍
If Ed tells you to check a weld, then check it......he was right!
Ed has a way of telling some they made a mistake but make them smile at the same time. Great guy.
Who actually thinks he sounds condescending? He doesn't to me. Sounds normal. But I appreciate him sharing lessons learned.
I think the ones that try to tell him how to build his own rig feel offended when he does it his way and explains why he does it that way.
@@Bendigo1 some folks are sensitive when they aren't heard i guess. goofy.

Check out Amazon for split loom. 100' is about $15 there. WAY cheaper than parts stores.
Support your local parts stores
No time for Amazon they need it now.
Really liked this one. Very much enjoy seeing the banana come along! Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Man I wish I possessed Trevor's patience to do wiring work. Hat's off!!
Try completely rewiring a 30 year old boat. You want to talk patience, this will kill you.

Hahaha, I hear yea.
I agree. He doesn't sound aggressive go me at all.
He's not aggressive at all. Only that some people are too overly sensitive and get their feelings hurt for no reason.
Is that worth adding 70+ pounds to the build?
@@shawnbrennan7526 Yes it is
What you might not realize is a diesel produces less waste heat than a gasoline engine.

Tom Selleck called.... he wants his shirt back....
Good one!
Rudi and Trevor…. Man, that was hilarious! Thanks boys! 👍😎
Everyone working hard......working together........and NOT complaining?????!!!! AMAZING!!!!!! thanks for another great video!!
Matt people are offended when anybody says anything nowadays. But you are anything but aggressive when passing knowledge. You would be a fine teacher.

I had one of those water pumps in my XJ and I changed back to a stock one it was just starting to leak and didn’t last long. I also did not really notice a difference with keeping the XJ cooler at slow speeds on a hot day.
Rudy did a beautiful job with the welding on that exhaust!
Sounds kinda like Ed may also need an idler pulley or tensioner pulley assembly.
Or AC compressor clutch/bearings soon. I'm guessing they get a work out in that part of the country.

Love it. Getting on a plane with that shirt, and helping Ed before you leaves. Thank goodness for Rudy.
Thanks for my MORR Hoodie! It's 60* and cloudy in the UK and we get them out!
Mill out a larger water pump pulley. That will slow the water pump down at higher speeds. It will also allow the coolant to spend more time in the radiator cooling it down more.
Rudy and Trevor are hilarious when left on their own.
Trevor is hilarious on his own as well.
I put a Ron Davis aluminum rad in my 80 series Land Cruiser and it made a HUGE difference. There’s a lot of differences in the aluminum rads I’ve found. ie: you get what you pay for. Haven’t had much luck with electric fans myself.

Sounds like Ed's truck needs a belt tensioner. Good job on the exaust Rudy! Todd Konoske the retired trucker.
Nah matt, u dont seem angry or mean. Some people need a thicker skin. Love what y'all do!
Matt is very confident he shares knowledge to try and teach people.

Matt wearing Hawaiian shirt: I'm about to fly to Texas!
Brain: Does not compute.
One does not justify the other 😂
Maybe he's hoping the plane takes a wrong turn and ends up in Hawaii lol.
The State of Hawaii invaded and annexed Texas in 2009. Little known fact. Posing as surfers, the Hawaiian navy attacked port facilities first. The Texans held out at the Alamo for as long as they could but were overwhelmed by Hawaiin army's pineapple rockets.
Not a shirt I would wear to Texas🤔🤠
Take Lizzy for street credits!

Rudy nodding in the background is my favorite thing this week...
PS I learned the hard way about engine bay heat after melting the coating of a lot of cables in there.
there is an additive for the coolant to help reduce cavitation.

Happy Sunday everyone! I haven’t even been to sleep yet unfortunately but I can wait till I finish the MOOR video.

A sad commentary on those that occupy such a beautiful part of the world.
Matt, please keep being you, who cares who gets offended. Thats their problem, not yours.
