I remember watching Taxi with my Dad. I was 8 or 9 years old and sometimes, he would let me stay up late, to watch it with him. He’d always say, “don’t tell your mother”. (She worked nights as a waitress at the time).
He died in 2021 from cancer. Now all I have are the memories.
Good night Mr. Walters.
He's not dead.
Uh-huh 🥲
What a beautiful memory… ❤
Respect bro. My Pop had this on vinyl bcus he was a huge Bob James fan, we'd listen to this for hours... I lost him to cancer as well.. I feel your pain. ✌🏾

The 70's had the very best tv theme songs.
The 70s had the best everything!
Cuz musicians……today music has been dumbed down to entertainment which doesn’t exist with a video and a frigging soap opera around fat lips and silicon boobs.
The 80’s too 😃
Soooooooo true! All the best in 2024 🙂
The '70's was the best decade ever. Nixon went down in disgrace , the Viet Nam war ended and the bi-centennial was awesome. Great music. Great movies. No internet and we had everything and we were happy.
Taxi and Hill Street Blues. Just the theme songs were enough to make you want to watch the shows 😉
Barney Miller
THANK YOU!!! I said the same thing about Taxi in another comment.
It was the best part of Taxi for me...
Ah, yes. The full Hill Street theme with Larry’s solo is a great song.
It's hard to believe that Bob is 85 years young. He looks and sounds fantastic!
Wow, I never would have known!
Not to be picky, but he would have been 82 for this performance.
@@paulwhetstone0473 and that's still remarkable! 😉
Yes he does, Bob James looks amazing. It the jazz the music 🎶 🎵 keeping him young. Great energy.
He's a national treasure.
I took my wife on our first date to a Bob James concert 43 years ago. We’ve been married now for 37 years. This song and my life will forever be entangled.
Wonderful. 😊
I pray my marriage is as long!
❤❤❤❤
❤
Won her over by your good taste in music!
This invokes a memory of my dad picking me up and carrying me to bed when this song was being played . I miss those times .
I was born in '78 and mine would be the opening to TV show "Dallas"
This is what music is all about man ❤
@Jimothyp your so right
So savory
I remember it in the 70s as the theme song to the TV show called. Taxi
It's such a joy that it only takes 3 people to make such a complete & glorious groove as this, nothing is wanting, nothing is missing.
Very true
Well, that is the basic of any band, right?? Drums, bass and guitar / keys.
I find watching Azymuth is like this too.Listening to them, they sound bigger than a trio, like there must be more contributing to this complete sound World, then you watch them and you're like...that's it?
This is exactly what I feel. Thanks, I've been struggling to express this feeling in words
@@noroardanto Most welcome
The fact that this video has almost one and a half million views fills me with hope 😊
Just into my teen years, dad let me stay up and watch Taxi with him but to bed right after, he would make us snacks during the commercials .. great memories

My condolences. It’s amazing how music transports back to more joyful times. I hope the rest of your days are as kind to you as they can be. Blessings.
Just beautiful.
That Rhodes and acoustic bass sounds so nice together.
Simply sublime!
I wonder if that’s the same Rhodes. Those things are built like tanks.
Ahhh YES,!! Fender Rhodes. Bob James, Herbie Hancock….the innovators and MASTERS of the incomparable Rhodes🙏🏾
@@DeliRevv I gave one away that had a lot of bent tines. Maybe a mistake, but I had to make room in my studio for a Steinway Baby Grand. Bob used a Nord 3 later on for the EP tone. Lighter, less bulky, and even more reliable. Knock on any Nord!
@@jerrylev59 check out the vintage vibe electric piano. a faithful re-creation of the rhodes, but with some modern twists too.
Love Bob James. I played his music all through college as a DJ at a HBCU radio station 36 years ago.
Good taste for a college DJ!
Bless your heart.
Black black black blah blah blah

Great choice! Hope played some late great underrated guitarist eric gale sometimes as well.
My dad's ringtone for the past 20 years!
This song has always been one of my favorites; ever since I was a little kid.
It was the first song I remember that made me feel an emotion I didn’t understand. Like a sadness, a melancholy feeling.
Same here Cats..😊
You too?! I’m an 80s baby I I think I may have heard this in the womb. It gives me the exact same emotions you described. Innocence, sadness then tranquillity.
It resonated with me as a young teenager. How awesome is that?
A short, but very accurate description of this tune. Nice.
yes well said
"The yellow taxi driving over the Brooklyn Bridge"....makes me want to re watch the classic TV show!
If I'm not mistaken I think it was actually the Queensboro Bridge the opening sequence was filmed on
Fun fact: it was Tony Danza driving that taxi! He talked about it on “The View” not too long ago.
@@JoeSlops Tappan Zee?
Wrong, it’s clearly the bay bridge.
One of the most recognizable songs ever…if you grew up in that era!!!
what a great video. and great to see this song get 2 million views in 2025!
Almost 1.95 million lol
Moved to New York and had a son with a wonderful woman named Angela. Growing up Taxi made me fall in love with NY.. I never knew the name theme song until maybe a few years after my son was born. I love him and still love Angela. No we didn’t stay together but we are still a family.. Taxi knew❤
As a kid I used to watch Taxi just before falling asleep. That song has been forever linked with a time in my life of no stress and innocence. This performance brought it all back. Thank you.
An iconic smooth groove -- from an era when TV theme songs were something special.
Wholeheartedly agree 😊
Give that sound engineer a raise. Dude gave Bob and these talent musicians the utmost respect. 🔥🔥🔥
Yesssssss!
Yep, sounds amazing
Sounds a bit too clean and clinical to me and a bit washed out with reverb but that could just be my taste
You’re spot on with the quality of the audio engineering. It’s outstanding!
@@ropewalkingelephant I’m not sure about clean, but it is smooth as silk…
I grew op a block away from Bob. I was a lot younger, but I do recall his dad, Lamkin James proudly calling out to Bob in the next room to sing out a specific note, which Bobby did. Then Mr. James walked to the piano and played the note. Perfect match, perfect pitch, evertime. Mr James was an attorney. Bob wa a proud Marshall Owl. Marshall, Mo.
The main melody is, obviously, iconically great, but the true genius is the response and the building throughout the piece. Bob creates an enthralling dialogue. How lucky we are to live in a time when we can freely listen to his music.
Quintessential NY. Perfect!!! Transported to a time that will not likely exist ever again. Just so moving & perfect!!!❤
I don't know what it is about the tone or melody of this song that makes me a little bit emotional; it makes me smile but teary eyed at the same time. Maybe because I remember hearing it as a kid and at that time in my life things were simpler and I was more innocent. Loved ones were still around, hard times and struggles were still years away. Something about this track just makes me feel safe, like being pulled into a long embrace and being held, or finally coming home after being away for a long time. I never want that feeling to go away. 💗💗💗 I hope this track has this affect on me for the rest of my life.
Thank you BJ for blessing the world with your genius!!🙏🙏🙏
❤
...Aja, I'm impressed by the choice of your words, after hearing Angela; almost a perfect summary of the story of my life so far... Jan-W
So true!!! There are some/few songs in history that have that affect & this is one!!!
Aja Christian Yes, "Angela" is a bittersweet tune. The sitcoms of the 70s and 80s usually had raucous, goofy music -- which is fine. But one major element that made "Taxi"
stand out was Bob James' pensive tune that went against type.
You said everything that I have thought each time I listen to this song.
Anyone is listening or watching ❤
me bob james is the best
bob james is the best
This music will never fade... Taxi and Angela with Bob James is always a Classic. Just LOVE LOVE LOVE.
I have loved this song since I was a child. This version is one of my favorites.
Every time I hear this masterpiece it takes me back to watching "Taxi" as kid. Fond, happy memories. Bob James' talent is a blessing to us all!
Most definitely!
Better times…🍻
I didn't even watch it. The theme is what I remember.
👍 agreed
Remember Louie the Palmer 😅😅😅
Bugs bunny & " Looney tunes" was my intro to classical music ( ride of the valkyries=kill the rabbit)
One of the most beautiful, relaxing themes of all time!
So many good memories, still great , classic! Bob James, the trio setting is killing it!! What a stellar line up from the original album 'Touch Down' .. thank you ❤
I was a fan of watching Taxi as kid because I was in love with the theme song!!! Little did I know as became an adult I realized that it was written by an actual jazz artist who is pianist!!!listing to this now in 2024 has a whole different kind of appreciation now that my understanding in music theory has evolved since I was a kid trying to figure music theory!!!
Me too, and mom had his eight tracks.
Good night Mr. Walters!
Owwwwwwww!
I can't stop playing this video.
Reminds me of the days living abroad in London missing my Grandparents. They lived in Forest Hills, The show Taxi use to come on in England and I loved the opening scene with the music of the taxi go over the bridge and I would get so home sick. We took the Williamsburg bridge but it still reminded me of New York City going to my Grams and Pappy's. Thank you for that wonderful song which will always be with me forever. Cheers Bob James! TOUCHDOWN!
1 of the sweetest songs ever written in earths history…still just as sweet 44yrs later….
Mr. Sani Tait. Great music has no boundaries, language, no country, no race, color or religion.
It’s like what you said. It’s just this amazing 44 years or one million year from now. God bless this music.
Nothing more true has ever been said ... but not just the song, but the way it is played!

Dig that Fender Rhodes Sound..... ❤️❤️
I was born August 1, 1983. My mom was late in pregnancy with me during the final episodes of Taxi, which aired in the hot summer of 1983. This song goes absolutely right to the core of my brain in a way that no other song does, it's totally wild.
Leo gang!
Omg!!!! Same August 83, I fall asleep to Taxi for the music. This just made my heart smile. Taxi just touches me so deeply always has. Yet it was over as o came here. So wild. Maybe even to the day. It’s so crazy glad I’m in excellent top shelf company. This man has to be someone from my past life. ❤
Got a good collection of Bob James music along with Fourplay's
The TV theme tune is one of those wonderful things in life. So many great ones to choose from over the years: The Odd Couple, Hill Street Blues, Rockford, Cheers, Succession, The Golden Girls. Bob James’ Angela is simply one of greatest. What a joy to see this magnificent performance, it brings back so many happy memories of the 1970s.
Beautiful . I was in a Blues Band in the 70s and there is nothing like a Fender Rhodes. R.I.P. Harold Rhodes. . .
I was in bands starting in the late 1970s and you wouldn't dream of going out to play without Fender Rhodes...even though they weighed about as much as a loaded casket.
I am not sure why this song brings tears to my years. It is simply 😊beautiful!
It doesn’t matter how you find great music, as long as you eventually find it.
can you imagine riding in a cab (...or car service, rideshare, etc....) in NYC on a rainy night with this playing in your car. Heaven.
Who's jamming in 2024??

One of my favorite moments of my childhood were taking road trips with my parents and one of the cassettes they would play constantly was “All Around The Town” which they got shortly after it came out in 1981. Now all these years later, I am playing it for my family whenever we go somewhere together. The circle of love continues on. Thank you, Bob!
just 3 instruments and a lifetime of soul. There's no replacing talent...

@killianlpc • Heck, the Streets Of San Francisco had a heckuva theme opening song. A Quinn Martin production.
Geezus. I think this is the greatest riff ever. Blues style.
Sounds like a Legendary Fender Rhodes Piano 🎹
This recording is beautiful, round, warm and full . The sound of the room is exquisite.
Nice. As the Taxi theme song, it was never long enough.
For many of us..the first song that got us familiar with Bob James. I remember the day I bought Touchdown ((1980) because this song was on it... Arriving home and putting the LP on my turntable..putting my headphone on..listening the entire album..I was addicted until today. Thanks Mr. James👍

That bass player is legit.
So many of us Gen X kids have the best memories of when our parents were still alive, snuggled up after bath time, sneaking in the beginning of Taxi before going to bed. The laughter, warmth, and feeling of home. Incredible theme with all the timeless and best memories of that era.
Real music from real people..

So strange. I can relate. The theme used to play on TV and be so soothing. Never once watched the show, but that theme... 😏

Unequivocally sublime.
A very large swath of people have a very personal connection to this beautiful piece because it was something that was shared in a time when our entertainment options were limited. That limitation connected us. It was a hugely shared experience. Decades later we hear the notes of that theme and we are right back in that place and time and it feels warm and good.

I watch Taxi on Pluto all the time so I can hear this. My 4 yr old boy loved it too
Music is truly a time machine. I hear this song and suddenly I'm a little kid in bed trying to pretend I'm asleep while really listening to whatever my parents were watching on TV in the next room. And thinking 'I can't wait til I'm a grownup!'
Ditto here.

This is my favorite version of the song. Loved watching "Taxi" growing up and this theme song is like a warm chocolate chip cookie with a glass of warm milk. So smooth. I also enjoyed the bass player's James Franco-esque facial expressions (Yo-Yo Ma would be proud if he saw this lol). Kidding aside, Bob James selected two great virtuosos; just awesome!
