Interesting stuff. We have a lot of boxes out and this is actually a relatively common occurrence across many species. Producing eggs is very calcium intense - so we often observe breeding females eating egg shells to top up their own calcium levels. Also see them removing eggs from boxes presumably believing them to be old and perhaps dangerous to their own future brood. I think here she may think these are old eggs that need removing. Be interesting what happens when the original owner comes back - perhaps Mr great tit isn't playing the one partner game? 👀

We learn so much from your camera veiws ,its amasing. I thought it was only cuckoos that messed with others nests. Its a wonder any birds manage to survive with cats ,magpies and now theft
Hi Fionn, thank you for another great video! I am very shocked that a GT could pick up a GT egg whole. The only time I have seen something similar on a nestbox camera, it was a starling who carried a whole GT egg out. Even the starling seemed to have trouble picking up an egg of that size. I feel very sorry for your GT mama. Have you seen much fighting between the 2 pairs outside the box? Or is the male bird courting both females (not usual for GTs)? As usual the cameras are showing us things we would never expect and giving us a long list of questions 🙈😂 Can't wait to see what happens next 😁

The second female seems to be alone. If she had a mate he would have come in to take a look too. Resident mom and dad are hopeful able to move this female along so it doesn’t remain a danger. Odd behavior for sure maybe she is acting oddly because she doesn’t have a mate.
Fionn vey interesting video. Wondering if you could answer a question I have. I’ve had a beautiful nest built in my nest box, it looks complete but the female has not been back to the box for 4 days, she usually came back to sleep in there but no sightings at all, is this normal or are nests often abandoned??
hmmm sounds like it might have been abandoned, or perhaps something has happened your female ! they don't usually leave for that length of time !
@@FionnODonoghue yea I was sort of thinking that too. The only thing I saw via the camera was great tits pecking at the outside of the box when she was in there and going in a couple of occasions when she was out, I was so looking forward to seeing eggs and babies, well there’s always next year I guess!
Happy update, So to my utter joy this morning the female appeared, she spent a hour or so nose diving in the nest cup, bought some more feathers and then went off with the Mr! So pleased she’s ok 😊

Good to see you still doing these Fionn. I haven't seen blue tits at my nest boxes in 2 different houses this year, maybe early days and haven't been at the other house much to see.
I feel like Brenda & Banjo would be fun names!
I assume this thief wants the nest box for herself if she is shuffling. Feel sorry for the mom.
