This is how every guitar video should be done. Great editing and playing, and even tabs. That way no one has to ask for tabs. It kills me how many people use "Learned by ear" as an excuse. If you are at the point where you can play a song for video, which requires repetition, you can take 5-10 minutes to make tabs. Hell, i even helped someone out and typed one up in a comment lol Subscribed just for the lack of laziness.
SKDK lolled at "10-15 minutes to make tabs". Sorry if I misunderstand you but it takes fucking ages to write accurate and useful tabs. What kills me is people who watch a video they like and 2 mins later write "tabs?" in the comments section. As a kid learning guitar I spent hours trying to learn songs by ear - definitely worth giving it a go yourself first.
it does not take long to make them unless you are trying to make them with all the symbols for mutes, sustains etc. None of that was necessary for the song i was doing because you could clearly hear when and when not to do it. By ear may be easy for some people but not all, especially if they havent taken lesson. Doesnt mean its impossible but if you dont know the guitar like the back of your hand, trying to sit there like "and this note here sounds sorta like this note here" takes a hell of a lot longer than looking up numbers on lines provided by the veterans of the community. The whole thing about listening doesnt work well for me personally because i learned from a game. It got me to the point where i can just find tabs and learn a song, but im still only a few months in. My point is, if you know the song well enough to play it back repeatedly for a video, then just help someone else out who may not know it. If you do it early, then you wont get spammed with comments. Not all songs are on ultimate guitar or songsterr. But that's just my mentality to help others i guess.
@@solidestwaif2533 Yes , he is playing with thicker gauge strings. I used to play 13 gauge on my 6 string guitar ,almost looks like a bass string but if you have a one piece guitar ( neck through) the resonance on these strings is epic.

This gentleman right here is why Novelists is one of my all time favorite bands. As an almost fifty year old guy, I grew listening to metal in its earliest and rawest form, and if this is the tip of its evolution, I'll be happy with that. Never in my life have I heard a band smash together music that encompasses all of the varying styles their music encompasses, and do it so well, so perfectly, with such grace and timing, and this may be one of their very very best songs. Just unreal. If you guys ever make it to the Birmingham, Alabama area (you should play Iron City, Birmingham, by the way, which was voted best small concert venue in the US last year and deserves it), I would love to buy you guys dinner. Everyone I turn on to your music becomes a fan. Godspeed to you guys on your trip across the pond this fall. Be safe and we hope to see you on the road somewhere. 10 of 10.
Came back to this song years after first hearing it and I just want to say that this video specifically was one of my biggest influences when first learning to play guitar. The hours I spent working on this song specifically had a huge impact on the music I play to this day and it's really special to me. I don't know why this resonated with me soo much but it did and I wanna say a huga thank you for the awesome music you guys have released over the years🤘
I've always loved Novelists's 'chordal melodic' writing in thier previous records. But it seems they've taken it to a whole new level in Noir! SOOO HYPED!
Been a novelist fan for a while.. live how the guitar riffs are so complex but not mucked up with insane amounts of gain and low end that muddy up the articulation. Good job bud!
Beautiful video and amazing song! We've been following you guys since Delusion. Can't wait to hear the full album, and congrats on signing to Sharptone!
I really love hearing just the instrumentals on this. Your playing, individually here and as a band, is beautiful! I'm impatiently waiting for the day you guys get to come stateside
The issue I'm having is learning how to do the progressions from scratch with little to no guides on how to compose this style of music. I've been playing guitar for 12 years, and got into progressive riffs when I first heard Periphery 7 or so years ago, and I still cant mentally comprehend how to compose or even how to learn this play style. I truly believe you have to have a extremely rare and very specific mindset, as well as have a unique understanding of learning music to be competent at making these kinds of guitar riffs. And on top of that, I don't have a guitar with more than 6 strings (and so help me God, neither do I have the bloody money for one with more than 6 strings).
Zendreax buy an affordable 7 string and learn as much as you can. You can pickup some Ibanez 7 strings for around $200. Learn some material in the genre you like and get better versed. Should help in your approach to composing! Well, it couldn’t hurt atleast right?! Ha, good luck man you can do it!
If you dont have a 7 string, then I'm guessing you arent actively learning songs by bands you like in this genre that use them so if you arent learning their songs and how they fit togethor and flow then obviously it would be hard for you to make that kind of music. If all you try to play and learn is classic rock, it would be hard for you to write a death metal song even if you listen to death metal all the time(obviously this isn't a death metal band I'm just using that as an example). I'm sure you know that and are beyond it after 12 years but I'll put this out there for others too I guess. Also you can get a 7 for like 200 bucks, or a really decent one for like 4 or 5 and I'd imagine you have plenty of 6s that are way more than that so
Definitely agree with what these two are saying. I've been playing since I was 12 and got into Periphery a little bit before they put out their first record. For the longest time, the only Periphery song I could actually play was Facepalm Mute. I quit trying anything from them for a long time. About 4 months ago, I decided to try it again. I stumbled and failed many times. Now, I can play some songs by them that I never imagined I could. Literally just don't give up. I had to practice a bunch and be determined despite my failures along the way. You'll get there. Just requires patience. Taking the time to get to that point definitely helps writing music like this. Also, there are plenty of songs by Periphery and bands like this that use only 6 string guitars so keep that in mind. Hope you get to where you're wanting to be! 🤘
I know I'm super late, but it helps to know a little theory or just have a physical piano/keyboard to help learn songs and compose with. Personally, having that visual representation of the piano helps me find the key/scale they're playing in more easily, rather than having to mess around on 6 or 7 strings where most of the notes are not unique and the hand shapes aren't obvious. Once you know the key you're playing in, you would know which notes are correct as well as your relation to other keys if you'd like to switch or if you need to change tuning. Finding the notes on the piano and putting them together on the guitar helps me find the bigger picture of what hand shapes are happening quicker. As someone who can't play or write this sort of stuff without practice, that's what has helped me begin to learn some songs and improve, without needing tabs.
Yeeeeesss!! Time to not only learn this song, but also do a vocal cover using this track. Such a sick format for doing a playthrough. This band never disappoints.
