Great video, today i swapt the 05 steering wheel with the manual cruisecontrol. For a 08 steering wheel you video explenation was very hepful. now time to make the steering wheel radio controls to work with the Maestro sw. thanks keep it up.
This video and you’re follow up video on the audio is a life saver. I found a lovely STI wheel exactly like yours for a very very reasonable price and I’m very good condition and wondered if I could get it to fit my fourth gen Liberty (Legacy). After watching your videos I’m going purchase it and hook it up using the help of your videos. Thank you so much! Cheers from Australia :)
lol of course he hasnt done it yet, I have the 09 impreza wheel and want to put it in my 04 forester too, I think the cruise control is completely incompatible with the older wiring
Did you have to modify the circuit board for the cruise control at all, or just splice the wires like you showed? I'm in the process of putting a 2015 STi wheel into my 06 STi. Seems like it would basically be the same process. Thanks in advance. Great video! 👍🏻👍🏻
I didn't have to do anything I didn't show here. There is a thread somewhere out there where the guy splices the circuit board but it's entirely not necessary, at least for the Legacy it's not.
He has an android tablet i believe and not the factory head unit. I dont think you would be able to unless you had a head unit with the steering wheel option controls.
hey, whene will you show how to conect the audio controll and bluT? and how about the LED mode u did? i did do a STI steering wheel swap, and works grait :D
This is awesome. I have an 08 sti wheel Im going to be putting into my 05 LGT auto. Cant wait. Just need to get the right airbag for the wheel. You wouldnt have a pin out so i know where to splice the cruise control into the wheel?
Really looking forward to see how to hook up the volume control, my 07 LGT doesn't have volume control or modes on its steering wheel but that's the one last thing that will make me grab a new one! Great videos, love the nexus update idea too.
The good news is I found a guy who made a write-up of how to hook up all the buttons which saves me some headache. I tested it and it worked. The bad news is I only did it temporarily because it takes some splicing and I'm moving and haven't had the time to do it properly. legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/install-steering-wheel-radio-controls-26232.html I will eventually do this and make a video for it but for those who are interested and can't wait, thank that guy!
Awesome video! I'm about to try this on a 15 STi wheel going into my 06 STi. I'm sure I can splice the cruise controls in, but I would love to be able to connect the illumination, stereo & bluetooth controls too. I'm just not sure if I will be able to get those wires hooked up to the roll connector, since the 06 STi never had any steering wheel controls. I have an aftermarket headunit & I know they make modules for steering controls. I guess I'll find out. Lol.
Fantastic video series! Thanks for the detail and clear instruction! Quick question; my 2005 Impreza Outback Sport has a single wire to the airbag, not two as yours is. Have you come across this type, and if so, any changes to the install?
Thanks. I'm not sure if it's possible to do this with a single wire airbag. At minimum you'd need to change the roll connector to work with the airbag but you'd then need to check if that roll connector connects to your car harness.
(I mistakenly posted this in the third video yesterday) So it seems my application is a bit different. As for my single stage airbag, it seems that was all that was required for the Impreza. That connector is all that controls the bag. So we're good there. As for the roll connector, I have the 8 available pins, 5 + 3 as yours does. What's different however, is that my green 5-pin connector contains all the original cruise control lever wires, listed in order: red, black, yellow, white, green. There is no white, 3-pin connector like you have. Also, the green wire has another length of green wire soldered to it, and that longer green wire grounds to the steering wheel frame. And as I'm looking at all of the wires, completely freed of its shrink tubing, it appears these bluetooth buttons were designed and added AFTER the audio and cruise switches were designed, like an afterthought. The bluetooth buttons have three wires; the black and red control power and illumination (tested with 9v battery), and the yellow wire seems to be the resistor wire. Now, if I'm looking at this correctly, the 8-pins available on the 2005 roll connector coincide with the 8-pins from the 2011 steering wheel harness. The red and black wires control the illumination on the SW switches... that right there tells me that I could tap the red and black from the bluetooth buttons, leaving the yellow communication wire. Could this yellow bluetooth wire be spliced into the SW yellow switch wire, and... could it be?? All wires would be connected and, if resistor values are different, then it should, theoretically work? What say you?
Where did you get the steering wheel from, I've been wanting to do this with my legacy gt, I have a new wheel with controls already, but I've had difficulty finding just the airbag cover and don't want to spend the money on an inflator I wont use
the way he did it I doubt the steering wheel controls would ever work, since he reused his old clockspring, if you use the clockspring with the connectors you can literally just buy the kit meant for the car the steering wheel comes out of and it just plugs right in
Great video! I have an 05 legacy 3.0R and it has volume and seek buttons for the radio on the steering wheel. It's an auto with the "manual" trip tronic option, and my question is if it was possible to change the function of the steering wheel buttons, I would rather like to use the +/- buttons to shift gears. I'm sure I'm not the first one who thought about it, but I couldn't find any tutorial to do it. Any help would be much appreciated.
Few questions, have you posted anything about wiring up the Bluetooth and audio controls? (Saw the description) Also how come you swapped the ignitor over? The airbag covers look identical, couldn’t you have used your 05 LGT cover on the 09 steering wheel?
@@RyansGadgetGarage- Appreciate the reply, I'll definitely be subscribing! I have a 05 LGT MT wagon too so loving the content so far. One thing that would be cool is if you showed a little more detail in your videos. Like for this one, wouldve been nice if you showed the wiring part in some more detail.
I'm about to put a 15 STi wheel in my 06 STi. I'll post a video on my channel when I do it. My wheel is coming in at the end of the week, & I still need to figure out if I can add the steering controls to mine, since the 06's never had them to begin with.
Thanks for the video mate. I'm thinking of doing this same swap to my 2006 forester as my stock wheel looks like crap. I do have stereo controls on my wheel and the same cruise control as you had. I know that you mentioned that the stereo controls should plug straight in, have you found any confirmation of this somewhere? My controls are skip and mode on the left side and volume and mute on the right side of the wheel, whereas the new wheel has all audio controls on the left. I presume that the 2005 legacy wheel is the same if it woud've had the stereo controls from factory right? Cheers
Did you ever get the illumination to work on the controls? I just followed the video, installed back in and they are not lighting up when i turn on the lights....
Hey Ryan, I have a 2008 Liberty (Legacy) GT here in Australia and am wondering about compatibility across models. No one, not even Subaru, can give me a clear answer. Apart from the possible hassle of stereo and cruise control controls, would there be any other issues I might encounter? I've found a nice 2010 wheel which looks identical. In fact as I'm sure you know, there are a few not GT model wheels which look identical, surely they will fit? Thanks in advance, Pablo.
Hey Pablo, 2 things determine whether the wheel is compatible - the wheel hub itself and the airbag. Here's an easy way to determine whether the hub will be compatible: www.avojdm.com/product_info.php?cPath=65_71&products_id=177 and scroll down to "applied models" Anything that's listed for any of those cars will fit on the steering wheel hub on your 2007-2009 Liberty/Legacy. After that all you need to do is hook up the airbag and controls. For anyone with an 05/06, anything listed there will also work on your car IF you change to a later model airbag.
